YOUR RWJ HAMILTON IMPACT We invite you to read our newest donor report, Your RWJ Hamilton Impact, which showcases the wonderful impact that donors are having at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton. Every donor makes an impact – from the smallest gift to the largest. Whether you give to support the fine work of our physicians and staff, to help fight major diseases and illnesses, or to build healthcare resources in your own backyard, your generosity is felt and experienced by all who come through our doors. On behalf of the RWJ Hamilton Foundation, thank you for your support. Finding Support for Stroke For the last 24 years, the Strides for Stroke 5K Run/2K Health Walk at RWJ Hamilton has raised thousands of dollars annually for the stroke care program. Recently, donations have helped facilitate activities for a new stroke support group for patients and their families. The group meets monthly to share their stories, trade tips, and laugh – and help each other on their road to recovery. Life after a stroke is not always easy. Many stroke survivors suffer from permanent disabilities, whether mobile, cognitive, or both. Venturing in public can cause anxiety and sensory overload, and physically navigating public spaces can be challenging. Recently, with the encouragement of their therapist and thanks to the dollars raised during the annual event, support group members went on their first public outing together to the Grounds for Sculpture. The trip was planned from start to finish in advance – their therapist worked with the Grounds for Sculpture to provide a guided tram, enable up-close access to the artwork, and arrange for a hearty lunch. The outing was a huge success! One group member, Tony, was very anxious about the idea from the beginning. In fact, it was Tony’s anxiety about going out in public that really prompted the group to plan the outing in the first place – so they could support him and each other. It worked. Another attendee said, “Tony just came right out of his shell. He was talking and laughing. He had us all having a good time.” Tony still suffers from short-term memory loss due to his stroke, and he did not initially remember the trip. However, when shown pictures and prompted with stories from the day, he was immediately animated and excited to share how much it meant to him. He even offered up a suggestion for their next outing – the casino and boardwalk! For group members, life is therapy, and moments like these are made possible through the generosity of donors. A Space Just for KidsIt is just after 8pm on a Tuesday, and you hear a crash, thump, and crying from your daughter’s bedroom…and you worriedly hurry to your local Emergency Department to get her checked out. It is a scene often experienced by families – the stress and anxiety of a suddenly injured or ill child can be overwhelming. However, thanks to the new HH Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center at RWJ Hamilton, parents and children encounter a calm, friendly, kids-only unit for emergency care. Children require medical care to treat not only the injury, but also the child’s emotional and psychological needs. Hospitals can be scary and intimidating for children, and providing a safe, welcoming space just for kids is critical to helping them relax and allowing doctors and staff to care for them. This is especially important with emergency medical care. The HH Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center’s rooms are spacious and can accommodate multiple family members. There are nearly 60,000 families living within a 15 minute car ride to the new Center, which treated nearly 15,000 pediatric patients in 2014 alone. Thanks to a lead gift from Martin Tuchman, who named the Center in memory of his brother Herbert Hugh Tuchman, providing a dedicated pediatric emergency space has been the RWJ Hamilton Foundation’s most successful fundraising campaign to date. In fact, donors raised a total of $2.8 Million to give families access to this invaluable resource close to home.

Students Experience Hospital Behind the Scenes Thanks to the generous support of the Fruscione Foundation, local high school students received the opportunity to learn first-hand about healthcare careers through a summer internship at RWJ Hamilton. The “Youth in Medicine Endowment” was established by local real estate developer, Sam Fruscione, to encourage youth to explore the field and to provide additional scholarship support for their college education. Since the establishment of the scholarship endowment in 1996, over two dozen students have participated in the program. Ryan Kreutzberg, one of this summer’s interns, noted, “The experience has given me a whole new level of admiration and respect for the field. Not only was I working alongside some of the most compassionate and hardworking people I have ever met, but they all seemed to love what they were doing. I was able to do so much – from visiting patients to seeing behind the scenes of how the hospital works. I loved every second of the experience and I could not thank the Foundation enough. Because of the internship, I know that I am going to enter an exciting and rewarding field when I become a

Young Professionals Network for a Cause What do beer and wine tasting, networking, and Santa Claus have in common? The Young Professionals Group (YPG) at RWJ Hamilton! Throughout the year, members of the YPG plan a variety of “fun”-raisers to support the hospital, including the popular events, All in Good Taste, Toast to the Season, and Breakfast with Santa. With activities aimed at the 25-40 year old audience, the YPG hosts these group networking and family events with a charitable cause in mind. The group also annually recognizes one of their members as the “Young Professional of the Year.” The 2015 honoree was Patrick L. Ryan, CEO of First Bank in Hamilton. Since 1999, the YPG has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for RWJ Hamilton, with their most recent activities supporting the new HH Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center. The YPG’s commitment both in their volunteer service and their philanthropy has been a catalyst for fundraising success for the RWJ Hamilton Foundation throughout the years. Their involvement has not only financially supported hospital initiatives and programs, but their organization has also created a pipeline through which young professionals can become directly engaged with the hospital.

physician, and I am now very confident that healthcare is where I belong.” Ryan and another student spent 40 hours learning about various hospital units, including radiology, infection control, surgical services, rehabilitative therapy, patient relations, and purchasing. We are grateful to the Fruscione Foundation for partnering with us to provide local students with this unique exposure to different aspects of the healthcare field.

Expanding the RWJ Hamilton Campus As the demand for healthcare here in the local community increases, growing the physical campus of RWJ Hamilton is critical in enabling the hospital to meet the needs of our patients. Thanks to philanthropic donations, the RWJ Hamilton Foundation has helped support various capital projects in response, such as the construction of the Lakefront Patient Tower, the Grounds

for Healing Gardens, and the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department. Moreover, support for growth on campus from the RWJ Family – the dedicated physicians, nurses, and staff – is also a significant influence. Hundreds of RWJ Hamilton employees commit not only their time and talents every day, but also their personal gifts to the hospital to encourage growth. In fact, the recent campaign to build The HH Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center received significant support from RWJ Hamilton employees. These are the women and men who care for patients in the expanded patient rooms, who operate the new equipment, and who engage with families in refurbished patient areas. Capital projects benefit the entire hospital community and help us achieve a common goal to provide excellent, patient-centered care to all who enter our doors and to continue to expand access to that care in the future.

THANK YOU!The RWJ Hamilton Foundation recently unveiled a new donor recognition wall to acknowledge our generous supporters of The HH Tuchman Pediatric Emergency Center Capital Campaign. With bright outlines and colorful characters, the wall serves as a daily reminder of the impact of your gifts and all you do to support Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton.
