Yet Sunday Breakfast Mission’s commitment to helping youth with school preparedness continues and we are already looking ahead to September. A new school year always brings with it fun, laughter, and rekindling of old friendships as well as the possibility of developing new relationships. However, for many in the Wilmington and greater Delaware area the new school year also brings new pressures and new anxieties. Parents who are unable to afford basic school supplies due to limited finances feel the weight of this burden first hand. In addition, children also experience the anxiety of not having the simple necessities such as pen, paper, composition books etc. Without the supplies needed to have a successful year they become severely handicapped and limited in their progress. By participating in SBM’s 2018 Backpack Rally in August you are not just helping our children have a successful year, you are investing in their future as they advance and mature into responsible leaders of tomorrow. SBM needs your help to ensure that every child has every opportunity afforded them in order to grow and learn in an environment that is sustainable. This sustainability comes through supplying them with the basics. A COMMITMENT TO HELPING YOUTH SUCCEED Providing backpacks and school supplies to children in need—an investment in their future

With the resounding clang of the last school bell and the allure of summer’s warmth and activities awaiting students, it’s often difficult to look with eagerness to the next school year.

By participating in SBM’s 2018 Backpack Rally in August you are not just helping our children have a successful year, you are investing in their future as they

advance and mature into responsible leaders of tomorrow.

SBM needs your help to ensure that every child has every opportunity afforded them in order to grow and learn in an environment that is sustainable. This sustainability comes through supplying them with the basics. As you begin collecting the items from the list provided, please remember your supplies can make the difference between advancement and being left behind. You have been so very instrumental in providing for our children from kindergarten through 8th grade over the years. SBM is thankful for your partnership. As we look ahead to the approach of the next school year we are asking

once again that you become part of a growing group of individuals who have stepped up to the challenge of putting school supplies in the hands of over 1000 children this August. Please call 302-652-8314 x172 for more information and how to get involved.

A FRESH START FULL OF HOPE

One man’s journey from the darkness of depression and drugs to a life of purpose

Ormaine was just a baby of three months old when his drug-addicted mother sent him to live with his grandmother in Florida. His grandmother raised him and provided for him and upon completing high school his life was looking up. That all changed one day when a car accident left him paralyzed from the waist down with the prospect of facing the rest of his life in a wheel chair.

Depression consumed his days and he turned more and more to his use of weed, which began at the age of 12, to self-medicate. His lifestyle led him in and out of prison for gun violations, dealing cocaine, and the inability to stay clean while on parole. When he got out of prison again, he sought a fresh start by moving to the city where his fiancé lives. But the seemingly insurmountable barriers dew him further into the darkness of depression where he grew tired of trying, tired of living, and felt he had no purpose in life.

In January 2017, he reconciled with God, stopped using weed and came to Delaware where relatives lived hoping to get his life turned around. Yet in February 2017, homeless, cold, hungry and hurting, he came into Sunday Breakfast Mission to receive a hot, nutritious meal and safe, warm shelter for the evening. That initial step seeking a warm meal opened the door for a conversation with counselor, Mark, about the holistic rehabilitation program provided free by Sunday Breakfast Mission. He saw the opportunity to change and begin a new life through the free program offered by the Mission.

Now, slightly over a year later, Ormaine has stopped using weed, has graduated from the discipleship program, is seeking full-time employment, and is strengthening and improving physically through physical therapy. He is making plans for his fiancé and children to move to Delaware and join him in a new life together.

Ormaine shared, “You, the donors to Sunday Breakfast Mission, have made it possible for me to deal with my paralysis, depression and drug use in a holistic and healthy way and provide a fresh start filled with hope. I have been treated with dignity and respect, which has been foundational to the support needed in turning my life around. The donors to Sunday Breakfast Mission have truly given me a second chance in life and have enabled me to provide for my family. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done to change my life.”

Your gift today can provide the beginning of a new life for men and women in need in your community. You can make a difference - one life at a time - by donating to the work of Sunday Breakfast Mission providing hope for the homeless, hungry and hurting.

CELEBRATING 1 MILLION MEALSSunday Breakfast Mission has partnered with WSFS Bank for 15 years to conduct SBM’s Great Thanksgiving food drive with its hallmark grocery bag distributed throughout Delaware in regional newspapers. The partnership between SBM and WSFS Bank has provided 1 million meals for hungry, hurting and homeless individuals and families in the greater Wilmington area. Once the empty grocery bags are in the hands of community members, bags full of non-perishable food items are donated or dropped off at WSFS Bank branches. The food gathered provides the means to provide nightly hot nutritious meals for the homeless and food boxes for the impoverished

facing food insecurity. To celebrate such a monumental milestone and SBM’s partnership with WSFS Bank Rev. Thomas Laymon, Sr. Pastor/President/CEO of SBM, presented a framed “thank you” gift to WSFS Bank’s President and CEO, Mark Turner stating, “In a time of prosperity we must remember that for many, it is a season of need. We thank WSFS Bank, its customers, and associates for their generosity and service. It is not often that a growing company like WSFS has an

attitude of giving that permeates every level of the organization.”

Ormaine saw the opportunity to change his life through the free program offered by SBM. He recently graduated from the SBM’s Bible Based

Rehabilitation Program and is making plans for his future.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done to change my life.”

A DONATED CAR PROVIDING BENEFITS Your Benefit Today

When looking at obtaining a new car or an upgrade consider providing your vehicle to the Sunday Breakfast Mission. There are the benefits of donating a vehicle for you and your family. To donate your vehicle follow these steps to obtain the maximum tax deduction for your donation. The process makes your donation experience easy. Here are the steps that happen with your donation

1. You will receive a tax receipt for your vehicle with IRS guidelines (IRS Pub. 4303)

2. Your vehicle does not need to be insured or registered, but must have a clean title.

3. SBM can coordinate to have your vehicle towed.

4. Paperwork to complete your donation takes less than 15 minutes.

Your Benefit TomorrowA key need for graduates of SBM’s Bible Based Rehabilitation Program is reliable transportation to

places of employment. This opens up a wider range of options and opportunities than provided in just relying upon public transportation. This was the case for a recent graduate, Ray. Ray shared, “I was able to apply for a job that if I did not have a car would not even have been a consideration for me. A good job with good pay was needed to help me in the next steps for living my life as a new man.” Ray was able to start the job and when his employer changed locations his car was key to keeping the job. He said, “If I did not have the great car from the Mission, I would have not been able to stay with the company, but instead I am still employed and building up my seniority.”

While a vehicle plays a key role for work, it also serves to raise hope in a graduate’s life as he is able to connect with family. Ray said, “It has been a real blessing to be able to see my children and grandchildren on a regular basis now. I am so thankful for the Mission selling me a great car, and thankful for the person who donated it to make this special time with my family possible. It is almost like I received an amazing graduation gift.”

Your benefit can provide the benefit of hope to a person in need today. Please, prayerfully consider the donation of your vehicle to Sunday Breakfast Mission today. Contact Mike Smith at Sunday Breakfast by email, [email protected], by phone at 302-652-8314 Ext 122, or go online to www.sundaybreakfastmission.org and click ways to give and then vehicle donations.

CONTINUING YOUR LEGACYMany individuals ask questions to learn how they can leave a legacy. How they can have an impact

on their community? How can they reach out and help others in need? You can have that kind of impact. You can move from “giving and offering” today to “being an offering” for generations to come.

The movement to “being an offering” requires a heart of compassion and love for others. Remember the story in Mark 12 of the widow giving just two small coins, worth just pennies in today’s economy. We learn from Jesus the point was not the amount of the gift, but the heart desiring to have compassion on others.

Compassion can come in many forms and have dozens of avenues to express itself. Our highest calling of compassion is to love those in need; to extending the love we as Christians have experienced from Jesus. The story in Mark points us towards taking the next step of making an offering which expresses our desire to extend our compassion and offering of today for years to come.

A practical way you can live generously and continue a legacy of caring and loving others is to have an up-to-date estate plan that provides for your loved ones and the ministries you care about today, like Sunday Breakfast Mission. We can help you with that next step. Go to our website www.sundaybreakfastmission.org/ways-to-give-wills-and-trust or contact Rev. Tom Laymon at (302) 656-8542, ext. 103 or [email protected] for help in establishing a God-honoring will.

Today Sunday Breakfast Mission occupies a city block on North Poplar Street and from that location is providing 300,000 meals for the community, 70,000 nights of shelter and a full time in-house discipleship rehabil itation program. Every day, SBM is extending compassion, mercy for physical needs and ministry to the soul through inspirational chapel services. The scope of the Mission today is a long way from the humble beginnings of 125 years ago in downtown Wilmington, but it continues to respond to increased needs and continues to address the growing number of people who are hurting, hungry and

homeless, “now more than ever”.In 1893 members of the church community in greater Wilmington observed the

operations of the Philadelphia Sunday Breakfast Association. They were providing meals and chapel services for the hungry and homeless in Philadelphia. Thus the humble beginnings of the Sunday Breakfast Association in Wilmington were initiated, providing Sunday breakfast to nourish the physical needs of the body, followed with teaching from the Bible to nourish the souls of the homeless and transient in the city in 1893.

The Need for More Begins to GrowSunday Breakfast Mission Association incorporated in Delaware in 1894. Quickly the demands for caring, compassion and mercy for those most in need grew “more than ever”, resulting in the Mission relocating from the 7th and Lombard location to the storefront at 117 Shipley

Street. The work and ministry of the Sunday Breakfast Mission was needed “more than ever” during the tumultuous times of the depression era with wide spread hunger, extreme poverty and hundreds wandering homeless. The Mission stood firm in being there when the “now more than ever” shifted during WW1 to provide for the women and children who were alone as hundreds of fathers went off to fight the war. The Mission provided meals, clothes and even Sunday school for children in order to extend the love of Jesus they had experienced in their own lives.

CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF SERVING“Now More than Ever”

In the early days there were 20 cots for the men lining up for a warm, comfortable, safe place to stay.

The expansion of the Mission to 117 Shipley Street to house and care for the homeless and transients included standing in the gap during the Great Depression and meeting the needs of

families during WWI and WWII.

SBM has always provided showers and a clean safe place to spend the night for those who are homeless, addicted, or

crippled with life issues. We meet this need every day, 365 days a year.

The demand for meals, shelter, and safety provided by the Sunday Breakfast Mission was the catalyst for a move to a

larger facility at 2nd and Orange Streets. In the 25 years at this location, the Mission would grow to provide overnight shelter

for 17,000 and over 25,000 meals.

Sunday Breakfast Mission Spring 2018 www.sundaybreakfastmission.org 5

CELEBRATING 125 YEARS OF SERVING“Now More than Ever”

The need continued to grow in the community to provide compassion, mercy and spiritual nurturing for the homeless, hungry and hurting at such a rate that the Mission moved to 2nd and Orange Streets in Wilmington in 1953 in order to provide for those in need. The theme of the Mission responding “more than ever”, continued with relocation to the present facilities at 110 North Poplar Street in 1979. This growth found the Mission making it possible for the homeless and those in poverty to receive over 40,000 meals.

The Face of the Need “Now More Than Ever” ChangesA new era dawned upon the Sunday

Breakfast Mission as President, CEO and Senior Pastor, Rev Thomas Laymon along with the board of directors recognized a new need “more than ever” for a facility to shelter and provide meals for women and children and to provide rehabilitation for the addicted and for those women struggling with severe life issues. In 2010 the Women & Children’s Center opened and provides 40 rooms to house, care and provide holistic rehabilitation for addictions and other life crisis situations while keeping moms and their children together. Now the combined men and women’s facility of Sunday Breakfast Mission provides over 70,000 nights of shelter and 295,000 meals for the community.

The Need “Now More Than Ever” ContinuesAs Sunday Breakfast Mission enters its 125th year of serving

the ever changing and expanding needs of the community, the foundation of its focus and purpose continues to be to provide compassion, mercy and love for those most in need. The needs continue “more than ever” today due largely to the growing opioid epidemic in New Castle County and the collateral d e v a s t a t i o n it causes for i n d i v i d u a l s , f a m i l i e s ,

neighborhoods and communities by leaving men, women and children in growing numbers homeless, hurting and hungry. You can take the bold step of donating today to the work of Sunday Breakfast Mission. Your next step is to become a part of the story of changing the city of Wilmington. For part of the story of always providing for the needs we face is being in the story of the ongoing history of providing compassion, mercy and the love of the Lord, which was seen as critical in 1893 and is still needed today “more than ever”. Please prayerfully consider giving by using one of our convenient methods and help Sunday Breakfast Mission to stand firm in providing the need “now more than ever”.

Sunday Breakfast Mission moved to its current location at North Poplar Street in 1979 as a men’s only shelter and

quickly swelled with overnighters and transients requiring 18,000 nights of shelter and over 30,000 meals.

In 2010, the present shelter expanded to include a Family Center to support the increasing number of women and children on the streets along with the growing number

of men facing difficult life circumstances. This expansion included forty rooms to house women and their children. In 2017 the mission provided almost 300,000 meals to the homeless and impoverished in the community and over

70,000 nights of safe, clean, and comfortable shelter.

SBM provides a community meal for individuals and families in need, assuring a hot nutritious

meal every night of the year

Families and individuals receive over 100,000 meals through food boxes prepared from our

Great Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Men and women graduate from the SBM program to begin a new life filled with

potential and hope.

DONORS’ GENEROSITY BRINGS HOPEPersonal toiletries donated are distributed giving hope to struggling families

and homeless individuals

During the hazy, lazy, dog days of summer….We are often asked what Sunday Breakfast Mission needs to fulfill its mission of serving the homeless and hurting people who come to our doors for meals, shelter, and hope. Below are two needs this summer.

1. Continued financial support during the slow summer months.

2. Donation of Food Items: Cereals, ketchup, mustard, syrup, jelly, sugar, cooking oil, elbow pastas, salad dressing and eggs

Many thanks to all who pray regularly for Sunday Breakfast Mission and all who give so generously.

Items like those picture above have been donated to allow SBM to provide Hope Totes (toiletry kits) to homeless and hurting people to provide them what they need to preserve their personal hygiene. THANK YOU for giving so generously.

“Thank YOU” to our partners and friends for your wonderful outpouring of care to SBM during our 2018 HOPE TOTE Campaign; it has been is a great success. Hope Totes have been a staple of SBM for several years and you have been an integral part of this helping ministry. Our community has appreciated your generous outpouring of gifts year after year to needy moms, children and the displaced in the greater Wilmington area. Because you care, we are able to supply toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs and brushes, shampoo, lotion, and shoelaces as well as several other items to our children in our residential discipleship program. Because you care, our men and women have the basic necessities to meet their daily needs.

Items are still coming in via churches, schools, organizations and through individuals who have caught the vision to share and are stepping up in a big way. When these bags are filled and returned to SBM they are given out bi-monthly to families who attend our nightly community meals. Hope Totes are also utilized by the residents in our residential discipleship program and by those frequenting our overnight shelter. Your contributions not only meet an immediate need, but also help to defray SBM costs by allowing us to concentrate on funding other areas.

If you have been thinking about contributing to this noteworthy cause, it is not too late to get on board. Contact us to schedule a collection event for your group or organization. This can become a wonderful teambuilding activity while at the same time you are developing a partnership with SBM to help those financially unable to purchase toiletry items. Although April 1st was our kickoff of the Hope Tote Campaign, because the need is great we will continue to collect any items that come in throughout the year. Give us a call today at 302-652-8314 to find out how you can participate.

BUILDING ON A FOUNDATION “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their

food with the poor.” Proverbs 22:9 (NIV)As Sunday Breakfast Missions celebrates 125 years of serving the homeless, addicted, and impoverished in the greater

Wilmington area, we recognize and celebrate the generosity of small, mid-size, and large companies for the part they play in impacting the community.

We celebrate companies that are standing in the gap for many homeless, hurting, and hungry men, women, and children by providing meals, shelter, and much more. It is because of your generosity through the years that Sunday Breakfast Mission’s legacy of rebuilding lives, and restoring families continues.

Jesus said, “the poor will always be with us” (Matthew 26:11) How we take care of the least says much about our society, and much about our businesses. Thank you to the many business owners and employees who rally around to server the least in our community. Your generosity of giving through company giving campaigns, volunteer hours, company projects, and national volunteer days is making a difference for many men, women, and children who seek refuge at Sunday Breakfast Mission.

With this in mind may we challenge you? If, you have not partnered with SBM, or perhaps you once did, but haven’t in a while; would you support individuals and families in need today? Simply text the key word sbmhomeless to 50155 to donate or give online at www.sundaybreakfastmission.org. What was laid as a foundation back in 1893, let’s continue to build upon and provide meals, hope and much more for many homeless, addicted, and impoverished individuals and families today.

Remember, “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.” Thank you for your generosity today!
