Fuerteventura

Holidays to Fuerteventura are first and foremost about the beaches, and once you seethem you’ll understand why – they’re the best in the Canaries.

With more than 150 swathes of sand to its name, Fuerteventura is the beach capital of theCanary Islands. Its coast morphs from the empty sweeps at Cofete to the busy, bar-linedstretches in Jandia. Then there’s the Parque Natural de Corralejo to think about.Unravelling along the coast for 10 kilometres, this national park is a huge expanse ofrolling sand dunes.

Corralejo, the most popular town on the island, balances old and new. You’ll find traditionaltapas bars in the old town and karaoke bars in the resort centre. Further down the coast,Costa Caleta is a family favourite, with watersports and international restaurants easy tocome by. The Jandia peninsula in the south, meanwhile, teams up national park-protectedbeaches with duty-free shopping complexes and a clutch of cocktail bars.

The island’s coastline gives the green light to some of the best watersports in Europe. Kitesurfing is big business here. And Playa de Sotavento, on the island’s south coast, hascornered the market for windsurfing. Head here in July and you’ll catch the WorldChampionships.

If you can drag yourself away from the shoreline, Fuerteventura’s interior is well worthexploring. Wind-whipped lava fields and valleys of euphorbia give way to centuries-oldvillages that have missed the march of mass tourism.

Beaches

Beaches for life

Fuerteventura has more than 150 different beaches to shout about. The island’s stretchesof sand range from deserted bays to well-equipped bases for families. Some of theisland’s coves and bays are held in such high regard, they’ve been given natural parkstatus.

ShoppingFew people come to Fuerteventura with shopping on their minds. However, if you do fancya spot of retail therapy to complement the sunbathing, there are plenty of places to spendyour euros. Prices are reasonable due to a lower sales tax than the mainland.

What’s more, this is a duty free island, so there are real bargains to be had on spirits, perfumes, aftershaves and some electrical goods. Not surprisingly, the place to find thebest shopping is the capital Puerto del Rosario.

The two main shopping thoroughfares are the Leon y Castillo and Avenida Juan deBetancourt, while the newest addition to the retail scene is Las Rotondas, a large mall witha range of shops selling clothes, electrical goods, home wares, food, jewellery and more. However, it’s also worth getting off the main drag into the backstreets, where you’ll findsome interesting little craft and curio shops.

Fuerteventura’s two biggest resorts, Corralejo and Caleta de Fuste also have a range ofshops, selling everything from suntan cream to souvenirs. They’re mostly concentrated incommercial centres in and around town, for example the Atlantico centre in Caleta deFuste, which also has bars, restaurants, a bowling alley, an amusement arcade and amultiplex cinema.

If you’re looking for more traditional souvenirs or gifts, Fuerteventura’s wide array of arts, crafts and cottage industry products will give you lots of ideas. Hand-made lace,

embroidered linen, glazed ceramics and leather goods are all good buys.

Then, of course, there are the famous Canary Islands cigars, which are extremely goodquality. There are plenty of small craft shops in and around all the major resorts.

Or why not visit one of Fuerteventura’s colourful, atmospheric markets where you canshop side-by-side with the locals? There’s one for nearly every day of the week. Head toCorralejo on Mondays and Fridays, Puerto del Rosario and Jandia on Thursdays, Fuste ona Saturday and Costa Calma on a Sunday. No excuse then not to find a bargain.

NightlifeFuerteventura doesn’t have the buzzing nightlife scene you’ll find on Tenerife or GranCanaria, with many visitors preferring a quiet night with a meal and a few drinks to anall-out rave. However, there are plenty of lively bars, as well as enough discos and clubsto cater for those who like to bop and boogie into the early hours.

In the capital, Puerto del Rosario, entertainment after sundown follows the Spanish model, with many locals and tourists spending a couple of hours in the waterfront tapas barsbefore even thinking about dinner. As for the clubs, which are mostly in the town centre, they don’t really get going much before midnight, often pumping out the latest hits untildawn, accompanied by laser and light shows.

The next liveliest place is Corralejo, where the after dark scene centres around the CentroCommercial Atlantico on the main street, Avenida del Generalissimo Franco.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, the northern end of the avenue has open air bars andcafés, some of which provide traditional Spanish music.

In the other bigger resorts, there’s a mix of venues, including karaoke bars, British andIrish-style pubs and a few discos.

One way to be sure of some lively evening entertainment is to visit Fuerteventura duringCarnival time, just before Easter. As with the other Canary Islands, the place comes alivewith colourful processions and celebrations, even in the smaller resorts and villages.

If you prefer a more sophisticated evening out, theatre and ballet productions are regularlystaged in Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal. Puerto del Rosario is also a good place forjazz, with local and visiting bands playing at venues around the city. Alternatively, seek outone of the flamenco bars for a bit of traditional Spanish hand clapping and foot stamping.

• Camelot, Puerto del Rosario One of the most popular places in town, this is a Medievalthemed bar and disco, which has a wall of video screens, DJs and occasional live music.

• Rosie O’Gradys, Corralejo Opened in 1995, this Irish-style bar has a typically convivialatmosphere, good home cooking, live music every night – and, of course, barrel-loads ofGuinness and Caffrey’s. It’s also got a big screen TV which shows all the latest sportingaction.

• Waikiki, Corralejo It may not be Hawaii, but it’s close enough. Attracting its fair shareof surf dudes, as well as clubbers and party animals, this fun, friendly place is locatedright next to the beach. The pizzas are good and there are plenty of colourful cocktails tochoose from.

• Bar Mencey, Costa Calma If you’re looking for an authentic Spanish atmosphere, alongwith traditional music, this is the place for you. You’ll be able to hold a conversationwithout shouting over the disco, and you can also have a game of pool, darts or tablefootball.

• Surf Inn, Morro Jable Attracting a young, hip crowd, this laid back surfer dude’s barprovides a variety of diversions to accompany the drinking, including darts, backgammonand Jenga. Alternatively you can just sit back, relax and watch surfing and snowboardingvideos on the big screen TV.

SightseeingDunas de Corralejo National ParkSouth of the main resort of Corralejo lies its natural wonder, a six mile stretch of gleamingcoastline backed by rolling dunes. Legend has it that the dunes were created by the windblowing sands from the Sahara Desert, but scientists think it’s more likely they weredeposited there by the sea. The dunes have always been popular with nature enthusiaststhanks to their variety of rare and unusual plants, such as the wild euphorbia. But thesedays, you’re just as likely to see kite surfers scurrying along the sands as David Bellamywannabes.

Oasis Park, La LajitaThink of this place as a zoo, safari and botanic garden all rolled into one. Head to theAnimal Park to watch more than 250 creatures roam around in their natural environments.Visit the tropical gardens for a multicoloured collection of cacti and palms. And watch theanimals strut their stuff in the sea lion, reptile and parrot shows. But the real crowd-pleaserhere is the camel safari. Climb on board one of these native animals and trek up into thehills for great views of the La Lajita Valley.

Casa de los Coroneles, La OlivaOpened to the public by the King and Queen of Spain in 2006, this beautifully restored18th-century mansion was once home to the governor of Fuerteventura and his militarystaff. Nowadays, it’s a multi-purpose cultural centre with some impressive exhibitions ofmodern art. But some original features of the house still remain, including the family coatof arms above the door. La Oliva itself used to be the political centre of Fuerteventura, and the pretty town is worth a wonder around.

BetancuriaFuerteventura’s former capital is one of the Canary Islands’ two oldest settlements.Famous for its mountains – the tallest one stands at 724 metres – it also has some of thebest views on the island. The centrepiece of the village is the Cathedral-Church of SantaMaria, which dates from 1620 and has three naves, as well as a sculpted stone floor. Otherattractions include the Museo Artesania, where you can see weavers at work, and the SanBuenaventura Convent Church, the first built in the Canary Islands.

Molino de AntiguaFuerteventura’s windmills were traditionally used to grind gofio flour, one of the staples ofCanarian cooking. This 200-year-old example, which sits in a lush garden of palms andcacti, has been fully restored to working condition. As well as getting a close look at thetraditional milling equipment, you can explore the small galleries which are home to paintingand archaeological exhibitions. There’s also a café and a craft shop where you can pick upsome unique holiday souvenirs.

Island of Los LobosTake a boat trip across the Rio strait to this little island, where you can enjoy scenic walks, plenty of seclusion and great views of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. In days gone by,Lobos was home to hundreds of seals – known to locals as sea wolves – which was how itgot its name. Nowadays though, it’s pretty deserted except for the fishermen who takeweekend trips here. If you’ve got time, it’s worth taking a hike up the extinct volcano. Orsimply relax on the beach and watch the surfers.

Mountain BikingFuerteventura’s rugged volcanic landscapes are perfect for two-wheeled adventures. Whizzover craters, rivers and mountains, going where no car can take you. Discover desertedbeaches, thick forests and little villages. And enjoy some great views. You can explore on

your own or as part of a group – most big resorts offer a variety of trips, with ones to suitboth beginners and experts. So don your helmet, climb on your bike and get to knowFuerteventura’s moon-like terrain a little bit better.

Camel RidesFuerteventura’s closeness to North Africa is reflected by the island’s large camelpopulation. The animals used to be used for agriculture, but new means of transport meantthey almost became extinct in the early 20th century. Nowadays though, they’re bred onthe island for tourism. You can take a ride on a ‘ship of the desert’ at various placesaround the island, one of the most popular being the Zoo Safari park, about 10 miles southof Corralejo. The longer rides take you into the caldera of the extinct Calderon Hondovolcano.

WatersportsYou’re never far from the sea in Fuerteventura and, as such, the island is a paradise forwatersports enthusiasts. Jet skiing. Windsurfing. Sailing. You name it, they’ve got it.Surfing conditions are great here too, especially on the windy north and west coasts, andCorralejo has a good selection of surfing schools for beginners. When it comes to scubadiving and snorkelling, the clear waters off the Isla de Los Lobos are a popular spot. Aswell as classic reefs and wrecks, there are some fantastic rock formations.

Peninsula de JandiaThe Jandia peninsula used to be separated from the rest of Fuerteventura by the sea but, over the years, deposits of sand have linked the two together. These days, the area iscompletely bordered by vast white sand beaches, most of which are part of a protectedNational Park. The peninsula has been declared a site of scientific interest because of therare plant and palm species which are found here. It’s also home to Fuerteventura’shighest mountain, Picola de la Zarza, which is more than 800 metres tall.

Eating outCanaries cooking is simple and unpretentious, and Fuerteventura fare is no exception. Before the tourists came, this was a sparsely populated rural hideaway. So it’s no surprisethat the local cuisine is based around fresh meat, fish and vegetables, cooked in apractical, no nonsense way. You’ve got the traditional Canarian dishes  like the famous‘papas arrugadas’ - salted new potatoes, usually served with a spicy ‘mojo’ dip - and ‘gofio’- a roasted mixture of wheat, maize or barley that’s a substitute for bread, dumplings, croutons and anything else that fills out a dish. However, there are also a few typicallyFuerteventuran specialities up the sleeves of the chefs’ jackets. For example, the milkfrom the Majorero goat produces a wonderful cheese that’s so good it has been awarded aprestigious ‘Denominacion de Origin’ certification. When it comes to dessert, it’s time tothrow away the diet sheet and indulge yourself. Tempting treats include ‘bienmesabes’ - asyrupy pudding made of almonds and honey - and ‘frangollo’ - made from gofio, milk anddried fruit. As for something to accompany your meal, you can do much worse thatchoose one of the wines made from grapes grown on the volcanic slopes of neighbouringLanzarote. The crisp, dry whites are particularly good. Fuerteventura doesn’t have anywines of its own, but does produce a punchy firewater called ron miel, a dark rum lacedwith honey. Typical Spanish fare aside, the Fuerteventurans, like their neighbours onLanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, have recognised that being one of the world’s mostpopular holiday destinations means having to offer a choice of more cosmopolitan eatingexperiences alongside the local tapas bars and ‘menus tipicos’. Therefore, in all the majorresorts you’ll find everything from pizza and pasta to a good old British Sunday roast. Oh,and here’s a word of advice. If you’re ordering a coffee if you don’t specify ‘café conleche’ you can expect an espresso that’s as strong as an ox!

• Casa Isaitas, Pajara If you’re taking a drive in the island’s interior, stop off at thisdelightful ‘casa rural’, where you’ll find a warm welcome and good, home cooked food. Therestaurant and rooms are within a lovingly restored 18th-century stone house withcourtyards and balconies.

• Frasquita, Caleta de Fuste Don’t let the plastic tables and simple décor fool you. This isthe best fish restaurant in town, and one of the best on the island. It couldn’t be bettersituated either. It’s right on the seafront and the indoor dining room looks out onto thebeach.

• Poco Loco, Corralejo If you’re hankering for some beef, this is the place to go.Centrally located on the resort’s main street, it’s an Argentinian-style steak house thatcaters for big appetites. That being said, you might be surprised to find that it also caterswell for vegetarians.

• La Factoria, Corralejo Situated right on the old harbour, this friendly, informal Italianrestaurant serves excellent pizzas and pastas in a lovely setting. The owner is fromBologna, so you can expect authentic Italian fare.

• Galeria, Costa Calma As its name suggests, this pleasant restaurant has a raisedterrace with wonderful sea views. The food is cosmopolitan rather than authenticallyCanarian, but is nevertheless tasty and good value for money.
