Please be advised that the speed limit in the parking lot of the community centre is 5 km/hour. Our parking lot is very busy at pick-up times for a variety of sports and community programs, many catering to younger children. Often children are excited when

leaving the building and may not look before they run into the path of traffic.

Please note that the end of the cement pad is a drop-off/pick-up zone only – unattended vehicles are not allowed. Also, the handicap parking stall is for vehicles that have a handicap parking sticker.

Help us ensure the safety of all users of the Oakridge Community Centre by entering and exiting the parking lot carefully.

Geology on your doorstep: Exposed Rocks and fossils within an Hour’s drive from CalgaryThursday, September 22, 2016 7:00 pm - 8:00 pmPresented by Jon noad, Geological Consultant Calgary lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Moun-tains, at the junction between very different geological settings. Fortunately, there are abundant rock outcrops that provide us with windows into the past. From these clues we can build the story of Calgary’s geological history, beginning more than 1.6 billion years ago and continuing to the present. In this presentation you will be introduced to arid deserts before life made its way onto land, to warm seas where thick limestones formed, and to a Mesozoic world where thick coals formed in swamps. Jon is an exploration geologist with 18 years of experience in the oil industry. He has worked for Shell and Husky, among others, and his work has brought it to the Middle East, South Africa, Borneo and Western Canada. for more information or to register visit www.friendsoffishcreek.org/event/geology.

hearing loss differs from vision lossDr. Diane Fennell

As with the eye, the ear’s performance is affected by aging. However, bad vision gradually makes reading harder as the letters get smaller as in the chart below but hearing loss is different. In hearing impairment some sounds in a word may be heard clearly but other sounds particularly consonants may not, causing over-all speech to sound ‘muffled’ or unclear. Hearing loss can make certain syllables and sounds harder to hear. For example, high-pitched consonants like f, s, th, c, st and t are easily drowned out by louder, low-pitched vowels like a, o and u. This results in a person with hear-ing loss complaining that they can hear others are talk-ing, but not what they are saying. They can hear but do not always understand particularly in noise. Listening with an untreated hearing loss can be compared to Swiss cheese; there are ‘holes’ in the conversation.

Hearing Loss vs. visual impairment

Hearing loss usually begins unnoticed. On average, peo-ple with hearing loss wait almost 10 years before they do something about it. Too few people make a timely decision to take active steps to recover their hearing and increase their quality of life.

Studies show that as people lose their hearing, they are more prone to depression; they withdraw socially and communicate less with family and friends. This comes as no surprise – after all, you can’t participate in conversa-tion if you can’t hear or understand what’s being said!

Graffiti vandalismA message from the Federation of Calgary Communities Building Safe Communities Program

Graffiti vandalism is figures, letters, drawings or stick-ers applied, scribbled, scratched, etched, sprayed or attached on or to the surface of any premises, struc-ture, or other property. It can be done by a variety of methods including spray paint, markers, etching and pens to name a few. Graffiti done without the owner’s permission is vandalism and is a crime carrying serious consequences. Most graffiti vandalism IS not gang re-lated, but if graffiti vandalism is left unchecked, other criminal activities may begin to start in the area as the perception of the community is that no one cares or is taking care of the area. Graffiti vandalism needs to be reported to 311. If graffiti vandalism is not removed quickly, this inaction may be interpreted as a sign of low neighbourhood pride, and graffiti vandalism will spread to other buildings, streets and properties.

What to do:1. Record the graffiti vandalism by taking a photograph

(if possible) of the damage2. note the location3. Report the graffiti by calling 311 4. Remove the graffiti if it is on your property or with permis-

sion of the property owner. The longer it is left for viewing the more likely other graffiti will appear in the area.

Please visit www.graffitifreecalgary.ca for more informa-tion on graffiti vandalism and how you can make a dif-ference in your community to address graffiti vandalism. Special thanks to the Calgary Police Service Graffiti Co-ordinator Constable Dave Ladic for input in this article.

Another summer has come and gone. I hope you en-joyed all it had to offer in and around our city. The City of Calgary and our Community Associations held many great events to get out moving and socializing like the Canada Day celebrations in the downtown, Stampede breakfasts, festivals, and mobile skateparks.

Council is back in session after the August break, along with all Councillor appointments to special commit-tees. I’m involved in many facets of City and partner functions, and I love these opportunities to work with great organizations and make positive changes. Here’s a bit about what I have been and will be up to. I sit on two Standing Policy Committees: on Community and Protective Services, and on Transportation and Transit. I also serve on Audit Committee and the Intergovern-mental Affairs Committee.

I am on the board of Attainable Homes Calgary Corpo-ration (AHCC), Calgary Housing Company (CHC), and the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF). These three committees represent the continuum of ensuring Cal-gary’s citizens are able to address their housing needs. By helping to create strategies to get Calgarians into homes, stay sheltered if they face physical or financial hurdles, and move out of the system and into home ownership, I am able to recommend policy proposals which make sense within the larger picture.

My work on the boards of Family and Community Sup-port Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA), and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) allows me to guide municipal policy development in conjunction with initiatives at the federal and provincial levels, and vice versa. FCSSAA meetings take me up to Edmonton once a month and FCM meetings take me all over Can-ada every few months to meet with colleagues in other Canadian municipalities. With FCM, I am the Chair of the Executive Committee, on the Governance Committee, part of the Prairies and Territories Regional Caucus, on the Standing Committee on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development, the Chair of the network of

francophone municipalities, the Standing Committee on Increasing Women’s Participation in Municipal Gov-ernment, Chair of the Standing Committee on Social-Economic Development, on the national Municipal Energy Infrastructure Task Force and the Governance Representative for Haiti projects.

The City of Calgary is the sole shareholder of EnMAX (while the City “owns all the chips”, it doesn’t play them). In my role on the EnMAX Board of Directors, I am really excited about the future possibilities of electrical dis-tribution. EnMAX is a separate legal organization, and pays the City of Calgary dividends when able. I prefer that the City use these dividends for re-investment, such as into the EnMAX Legacy Parks Fund. This is the funding mechanism behind the Sandy Beach/River Park rehabilitation project.

I also act in an advisory capacity to the BiodiverCity Ad-visory Committee, the Climate Change Action Advisory and the national Zero Waste Council. Healthy native flora and fauna populations give our city increased re-silience in the face of climate change. Especially at the municipal level, it’s important to address waste, and the real cost of waste to both the municipality and our en-vironment.

I also serve on the Calgary Arts Development Authority board. Besides my past involvement in and love of the arts community, there is a real economic argument for the arts that we as a City need to support.

As we gear up for a busy fall, be sure to subscribe to your Ward 11 update at www.ward11calgary.ca to receive an email or two a month letting you know about important happenings in your community and city.

Dear Constituents:

As we transition to autumn, I hope all of you were able to make the most of summer and get ready for the new school year and upcoming ventures. It was a great time for myself to do a self-reflection and I want to ask your-selves about the best possible ways I can best serve you as your MLA. I would be delighted to learn about how I can be the best I can be as the MLA representing you. Therefore, please contact me at the contact informa-tion provided to share your thoughts and suggestions. I look forward to having your feedback.

I, your MLA along with the government have been work-ing very hard to create jobs in Alberta and boost our province’s economy. The collapse in oil prices has caused economic pain and anxiety throughout the province. For this reason, in this newsletter I would like to share infor-mation about the alberta Jobs Plan in-depth.

alberta investor tax Credit: $90 Million for the new Alberta Investor Tax Credit provides a credit to those in-vesting in small-and-medium sized enterprises.

Capital investment tax Credit: $75 Million for this credit provides credits for the first-time acquisition of new or used property or spending in value-added ag-riculture, tourism infrastructure, culture, manufacturing and processing industries.

the Entrepreneurship incubator Program: It helps entrepreneurs and small and medium sized businesses bring their ideas to market.

Reduction in the Small Business income tax Rate: The income tax rate for small businesses have been re-duced from three percent to two percent and is effec-tive January 1, 2017.

the New alberta Child Benefit and Enhancements to the alberta family Employment tax Credit: This pro-vides approximately $340 Million in combined benefits to 199,000 families and will help children get a good start in life. Also, it helps Albertans in need get back on their feet and under this plan, 380,000 children will be better off.

the Climate Leadership Plan: Invests in public transit, energy efficiency, new cleaner electricity and continu-ous strong negotiations with provincial and federal part-ners to build new pipelines-The safest and most efficient way to deliver Alberta’s traditional energy products to new markets.

the alberta Jobs Plan also provides help for appren-tices to complete their training/work experience require-ments and supports the Training for Work Program. For further details on the Alberta Jobs Plan please check the website www.alberta.ca/alberta-jobs-plan.aspx as well as the website for Alberta Ministry of Economic Develop-ment and Trade at www.economic.alberta.ca.

The Government of Alberta could have chosen to make cuts during these rough times to the services people rely on but, it has chosen to support Albertans by creating jobs and investing in infrastructure.

the alberta Jobs Plan invests:•$3.5 Billion to build and modernize schools•$9 Billion in funding to municipalities•$900 Million to ensure Albertans live in affordable homes•$365 Million to continuing care
