From Forest to FarmEarly settlers simply went outinto the forest and choppeddown a suitable tree. Butentrepreneurs soon begangrowing trees the same asother crops – on the farm. Thisallowed growers to keep thempruned to the symmetricalshape favored by buyers.

Tree TransportationOver the years Christmastrees traveled via nearlyevery form oftransportation. They weredragged out of the forest onsleds, piled onto flat cars orstaked gondolas and loadedinto boxcars. Ships evencarried Christmas trees fromUpper Michigan andWisconsin to Chicago. As the

Did You Know?#1 There’s a Christmas tree farm in nearly every state in theU.S. and in many parts of Canada. Oregon produces thegreatest number of trees but Michigan has the greatestvariety, up to 13 different species.

#2 Candles lit up the first Christmas trees. In 1882 a colleagueof Thomas Edison, Edward Johnson, wired together a string ofred, white and blue bulbs to create electric lights. Althoughmass produced by the 1900s, electric lights were too expensivefor average Americans until 15-year old Albert Sadacca cameup with a way to manufacture colored lights affordably in1917.
