Message froM thepresidentWelcome to January and the start of a new year. I hope everyone had a great holiday.

Dec 31 is traditionally the time to reflect back on the past and plan for the upcoming year.

2016 was our 50th Anniversary and your NHCA Board celebrated with special events well attended by mem-bers of our community.

It was a great experience to join with residents and volunteers from the past and present to talk about our wonderful community and how it has changed over time. One thing that hasn’t changed is the cozy neigh-bourhood feeling and the attachment people who live or have lived here feel for NH.

We are excited to start a new year and hope to host fun, interesting, and informative occasions in 2107, includ-ing the Winter Carnival coming up soon, and meetings on development issues such as traffic safety and urban forestry, later in the year.

Meet Your Board Volunteerbob porteousI have lived in North Haven for over fifty years. My consulting business took me to over 60 countries and I would not want to live elsewhere. I am now required to take vigorous walks almost every day for health rea-sons. This has enabled me to see every street in our great community many times (and meet some very nice people). I’ve noticed that in the vast majority of cases we do a great job of keeping our properties neat and well maintained.

Here are some simple suggestions as to how you and I can do our bit to make North Haven (and our beautiful properties) even greater than they are. In the current economic situation, we may not be able to afford reno-vations or additions, but here are some things we can do that are free. It will likely result in us feeling a little better about everything. Trust me, I’ve been there.

Introduce yourself as you welcome new neighbours, owners, or renters. Smile and say hello to people you encounter on your walks. When walking, wave to cars that you recognize, even those you don’t.

When driving, drive safely, even a little slower than the posted speed limit. Take a moment to help people when you can, e.g. if they look lost, ask if they need di-rections; at the school or at the store, hold a door for others. Join your community association. It’s inexpen-sive and you can meet some really fine people. Even if you don’t join, read the Newsletter and visit the new website northhavenyyc.ca. They are both sources of useful information. Offer to help out on one of the volunteer committees, they could use your help since their workload on behalf of the community residents is growing fast. Make suggestions to your community association regarding what you think the CA could do better, and, if you can, be prepared to help. Trim trees and hedges back to the edge of the sidewalk. Pedes-trians (like me) will appreciate it. Clear snow promptly. Keep grass cut on a reasonable frequency. Keep your back lane tidy, at least to the centre line.

This article was written by Bob Porteous who has lived in North Haven for over fifty years with his wife, Eva. Their two daughters were raised and educated here through university. Bob is a pro-fessional engineer and since graduation in 1956, spent his career in the petroleum industry, based in Canada and overseas. The last half of that period he operated his own international con-sulting and training company, doing business on six continents. He served the Petroleum Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum in several roles, including as national chairman. He was awarded Fellowship in the CIM. He has a strong interest in local and international affairs and serves as a volunteer member of the Development Review Committee in North Haven.

North haven PreschoolThis month the students at North Haven preschool were busy preparing for Christ-mas as they decorated ginger bread men, both eatable and non-eatable, explored advent calendars, and Christmas trees. The month was wrapped up with a Christ-mas party filled with a variety of tasty treats, fun games and a special guest who traveled all the way from the North Pole. iN aNd arouNdNorth haveNentertainment & events Update:Happy 2017! This year, a committee will organize the entertainment! I’d like to welcome Anne Umpleby and Margaret Grant to my team. If anyone else is interested in helping out with the planning and organizing of our community events, please get in touch!

We have some exciting events coming up this year! For ease of planning, most of these events will happen on the 2nd Saturday of each month. So keep an eye on the community calendar to see what we have going on! All our events are posted on the website, northhavenyyc.ca, as well as the North Haven Community Association Facebook page, and the sign at the hall.

To kick off the year, we are hosting a skating party on Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm at the rink. This is an all-ages event, and we hope to see lots of people out again this year! We will have cookies and hot chocolate, as well as a DJ to really make it feel like a party! Feel free

to bring your skating aids (small chair, etc), but hockey playing will not be allowed during this event. All chil-dren need a helmet. Bring your dinner, or order a pizza from Mona’s, and come hang out a while! We’ll have the firepit going as well, for those not wanting to skate. If it is too cold, or there is no ice because it’s too warm, we hope to plan something indoors at the hall.

On Saturday, February 11, we are hosting our Annual Family Winter Carnival from 1-3pm. This is an indoor/outdoor event with lots of activities for the whole fam-ily! We will be serving hot dogs and hot chocolate. Hopefully the weather cooperates and there will be ice on the rink for skating and playing games. We do need some volunteers for this event, so if you’d like to help out for an hour on the day of the event, please let us know!

On Saturday, March 11, we are planning an adults-only comedy night! We will have several comedians, fol-lowed by a pub night. You won’t want to miss this fun (and funny!) night! Tickets will be $20, and will only be sold in advance – no ticket sales at the door. Keep an eye on Facebook and the website northhavenyyc.ca, to see when they go on sale.

Parents and Tots Update:Parent and Tot’s have been a quiet this fall. Those who have been come have a lot of fun and are learning tak-ing turns on the slide and sharing Mr Potatohead. We meet Friday mornings from 9:00 to 10:30 am in the basement of the Community Hall. We have lots of great toys, a slide and room to run. The group is encourages all parents, grandparents and caregivers of kids 0 to 5 years of age to join us. As we share the space with our community preschool, any snacks brought during Par-ent and Tots time need to be peanut free.

give new life to your christmas treeTurn your real Christmas tree into useful mulch instead of garbage through The City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program. By recycling trees into mulch, you can keep waste out of our landfills and reduce harmful green-house gas emissions.

This year The City’s Christmas Tree Recycling program will be drop-off only. We will not be collecting trees door-to-door. Instead we’re asking residents to meet us half way, by taking their trees to one of our 15 des-ignated drop-off locations between December 26 and January 31.

The trees should be free of lights, ornaments, tinsel, tree stands and string, and should not be wrapped or bagged. Mulch from recycled Christmas trees will be available to residents at no cost at the East Calgary land-fill, while quantities last.

helping your children with social and emotional skillsAs parents, we strive to help our children learn new things in the early years of their lives. These things in-clude learning to walk, dress themselves, use the potty, and many, many more things. Teaching your child so-cial-emotional skills are just as important. These skills are: recognizing and understanding their thoughts and feelings; making healthy decisions and learning right from wrong; being a friend and making friends (teach-ing conflict resolution and cooperation); self regulation (calming themselves down in an appropriate manner); being empathetic to others.

Here are some tips on how to foster social emotional development in a baby:1. Responding to the baby when they cry. They need to

know that they can depend on you in times of need.2. Hold and hug your child.3. Learn their cues for tiredness, hunger, happy, upset, etc.4. Being gentle and comforting in times of being upset.

Rock the baby, sing a soft song, cuddle, or walk with them.

The Calgary NW ECD Coalitions consist of three coali-tions who have joined forces with parents, community members, organizations and professionals, who are all working together to better the lives of young children and their families. We work hard to support five impor-tant developmental areas for children – Social Compe-tence, Emotional Maturity, Language & Thinking Skills, Physical Health & Well-being, and Communication Skills & General Knowledge. Happy New Year! A better neighbourhood starts with you - start 2017 by being a good neighbour!

Here are 4 initiatives you can do to improve your neighbourhood:

1. Don’t be a stranger - Make it an objective to say “hel-lo” to at least three neighbours that you don’t know by name. Who knows maybe you’ll make new friends!

2. experience the great outdoors – Plenty of neigh-bourhoods across our city have access to parks and pathways. Make it a point to be outside more often. Not only is getting outside good for your mental and physical health but it can build a greater appreciation for your neighbourhood.

3. Look out for one another – Creating a safer com-munity requires doing 1) and 2) on the list. When you’re connected to your neighbours a sense of safety can be achieved. The more often you’re out-side, you can readily identify any unsafe aspects in your community.

4. Purchase a membership – Obtaining or renewing an annual membership to your community association can offer social, recreational opportunities and com-munity life.

Sunny side up! New map shows the solar potential of your roof

Wondering about the potential amount of sunshine on your home’s roof and how it compares to other homes? Check out the City of Calgary’s Solar Potential Map to find out!

The new map is intended to be a starting point for Cal-garians who are curious about the viability of solar as an energy source for their particular home or building. Using data collected in 2012 and 2013, the map shows all buildings in Calgary’s city limits and their varying de-grees of solar exposure, on an annual basis, in general-ized optimal conditions.

“The solar potential map can be the first step in de-termining if a solar energy system could work on your home,” says Liz Findlay, manager of Geospatial Business Solutions, the group who created the map. “People con-sidering a solar installation should contact a solar sys-tem professional to conduct a thorough assessment for their particular building and location.”

The best place to look for solar professionals is the Cana-dian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA), which has an online member directory.

Solar energy isn’t just for homes. Various City facilities already have solar systems installed to off-set some of their electricity needs and costs. You can find the par-ticular locations on the solar potential map using the information icons on the map or scrolling through the project listings on the left side bar. To find your home on the map, simply type your home address in the search bar.

Happy New Year! Parliament rose at the end of December and I have enjoyed having an extended opportunity to spend time with constituents working at home in Calgary. I have had the chance to meet with many individuals in our community and hear about the issues important to them. Over the last number of weeks I continue to hear from individuals who are being impacted by unemployment. This continues to be of primary concern to me. I will be holding a ‘Alberta Jobs Round Table’ meeting on Janu-ary 12th at 11:45 AM. Many of you have likely received the government’s mail out regarding electoral reform at your home. On Oc-tober 11, 2016 I submitted the results of my consulta-tions with our community, to the special committee on electoral reform, which found 79% of respondents did not think we needed to change our current system of voting and 91% felt a referendum should be held prior to any changes being made. In fact, the government’s own electoral reform committee agreed that a national referendum should be held prior to any changes. How-ever, you will note, that the government’s mail out to you with respect to electoral reform makes no mention of a referendum at all. I will continue to advocate for a referendum prior to any changes being made to the electoral system.

There will be many critical issues debated in Parliament in the coming year. As always, I encourage you to con-tact me at my office on any issue of importance to you.
