YOur nitrOgen isn’t as seCure as YOu think.
An innovative tool for protecting UAN and liquid manure.
The key to effective N management is to keep applied N in the
ammonium (NH4+) form. The ammonium form of N is easier for corn
plants to use and is less susceptible to loss due to denitrification
and leaching. Instinct works by keeping applied N in the preferred
ammonium form.
To understand the importance of maintaining N as ammonium,
consider what happens in the soil after an N application.
•Nsources,liketheureaportionofUAN,rapidlyconvertsafter
application to the ammonium form, which carries a positive
charge. The positive charge allows this ammonium, as well
as the ammonium in liquid manure, to be held in place by
negatively charged soil and organic matter.
•Aconversionprocessbeginswhentemperature-sensitivesoil
bacteria called Nitrosomonas convert ammonium to the nitrite
form (NO2–). Another bacteria then causes conversion to the
nitrate form (NO3–). This process can take as little as two
weeks when soil temperatures start rising. (See Figure 1.)
Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer works to stabilize N by slowing
the conversion of ammonium to nitrates.

Nitrosomonas bacteria begin the conversion process to nitrates.

is less susceptible to losses from leaching and dentrification
than nitrate.

Supporting environmental stewardship.Instinct supports environmentally
beneficial farming practices in a
number of ways. By keeping N in
the ammonium form longer, Instinct
reduces leaching of N into groundwater
and it reduces the loss of N into the
atmosphere as a greenhouse gas
through denitrification.
In fact, after three decades of testing,
the active ingredient in Instinct yielded
a 16 percent reduction in nitrate
leaching and a 44 percent to 51 percent
reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Plus, Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer can
be tank-mixed with fertilizer, herbicides
and insecticides — requiring fewer trips
across the field and reducing fuel costs.

Directions for use.You can mix Instinct with the following fertilizers:
• Aqua ammonia
• UAN
• Liquid manure
• Liquid fertilizers containing N, phosphorus and potassium (such as 10-34-0)
• Ammonium sulfate
In a few cases, Instinct should not be used:
• Do not use Instinct with dry fertilizers containing nitrate (such
as ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate or calcium nitrate)
• Do not mix seed with dry fertilizers impregnated with Instinct
• Do not use Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer in irrigation systems
Instinct can be added to liquid N combined with herbicides and insecticides. A jar test may indicate the need for a compatibility agent. Mixing is recommended in the following sequence:
1. Add Instinct (and compatibility agent if needed)
2. Add wettable powders or flowables
3. Add emulsifiable concentrates
Be sure to maintain continuous agitation during the mixing cycle.
Application rates for Instinct.spring applications
• UAN (28 percent to 32 percent) — 35 ounces per acre
• Liquid manure — 35 ounces per acre
Fall applications
• Liquid manure — 35 to 70 ounces per acre
Incorporating Instinct. The encapsulated formulation of Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer allows
it to remain on the soil surface for up to 10 days, providing flexibility
in incorporation. Incorporation can be achieved if a minimum of
½ inch of rain or irrigation falls within 10 days of application.
If rainfall doesn’t occur or isn’t forecast within 10 days after
application, then light tillage is required. A field cultivator is
recommended for light tillage, or a rotary hoe if the crop has emerged.
The results of more than 75 Iowa field trial comparisons show that Instinct nitrogen stabilizer improves yields by approximately 5 bushels per acre on average compared with plots without stabilized N.
Instinct protects N at the root zone when used with UAN or liquid
manure. By ensuring N is available in the root zone during key stages
of corn growth, Instinct optimizes the yield potential of corn.
More than 30 years of research confirms that the use of nitrapyrin,
the active ingredient in Instinct, results in an average yield increase of
5 percent to 7 percent. On-farm field trials in Iowa showed an average
yield increase of 5 bushels per acre when Instinct was used with UAN.
In addition, by keeping N available to corn plants, Instinct™ nitrogen
stabilizer promotes increased grain protein, improved standability,
reduced stalk rot and faster crop drydown.
Optimize COrn Yield pOtential.Nitrogen stabilization takes on a new form.New Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer delivers proven nitrogen (N) stabilization technology in a water-based, microencapsulated
formulation from Dow AgroSciences, the leader in nitrogen stabilization for more than 35 years.
Corn’s yield potential is determined in the first 30 to 40 days after emergence. Making more N available during early
development gives plants a strong start.

Trust the leader in N stabilization. For more than three decades, Dow AgroSciences has been the leader
in N stabilization for anhydrous ammonia, providing solutions that
stabilize N in order to provide the best overall return on investment
per pound of N applied. Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer joins N-Serve®
nitrogen stabilizer in the Dow AgroSciences nitrogen management
portfolio as the only other N stabilizer for UAN and manure registered
with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Stabilizing an N investment with Instinct can optimize corn yield
potential by protecting N at the plant root zone. Using an N stabilizer
can contribute to responsible stewardship of the environment by
reducing leaching of nitrates into groundwater or loss of N into the
atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. With Instinct, growers can have
confidence in protecting their N investment with proven technology
from the leader in N stabilization.
