TO ATTACH HANDLE TO CLEANERI. Remove tape and screw from handle socket and set aside for later use.2. Connect electric plug from bottom of handle to electric plug projecting

from handle socket. Make sure plug assembly is positioned as shownin illustration.

3. Push handle into place in handle socket. The excess wire and electricplugs are guided into handle tube.

4. Line up holes in handle and handle socket. Insert screw and tightenwith screwdriver.

The handle on your clean-er has three positions -storage, operating, andlow (for reaching underlow furniture). The handlecan be lowered by step-ping on pedal at the leftrear of cleaner. Thehandle should always bein storage position whencleaning tools are used.

Your new HOOVER DIAL-AMATIC is the most powerful up-right cleaner ever built. Propersuction control for your floorcoverings is most important forcleaning effectiveness and easeof operation.

FIRST, set the dial between“MEDIUM” and “LOW”. Thiswill be the correct setting forthe majority of rug thicknesses.

For deep pile carpets, shagrugs, cotton rugs, or lightweightthrow rugs, move the lever to-ward “LOW” if the cleaner doesnot push easily.

For low pile, sculptured, ormulti-level rugs, it may benecessary to move the lever to-ward “HIGH”.

When you have the proper settingon the dial, your Hoover willpush easily and clean thor-oughly.

CLEANING TOOLS

The handle of the cleanershould be in storage position(See page 2) when cleaningtools are used. When thehandle is in this position, thenozzle is raised and theagitator does not come incontact with the rug.

Attach hose and cleaningtools (Page 7). Set lever onSuction Control Dial to“High” under “CleaningTool Use” for most clean-ing. For cleaning draperiesand delicate fabrics, movelever toward ‘ ‘ Low’ 9.

The lever can be placed at“High”, “Medium”, “Low’~or any space between thesemarkings.

THE CLEANING TOOLS MODEL 1101(See Page 5 for setting Suction Control Dial when using tools.)

The cleaning tools have many uses. Some are listed below:

1. TUFFLEX HOSE Double vinyl reinforced with nylon mesh forlong, trouble-free life. The light flexible hose has a vinyl tab,so it can be hung on the cleaner or on a hook in a closet.

2. TELESCOPING WAND When yourequire extra length for cleaningbare floors or hard-to-reach places,attach the telescoping extensionwand.

To lengthen the wand, push in on theplastic latch and extend wand untilit locks in place. To shorten, useopposite procedure.

3. FLOOR BRUSH For Hard Surface Floors and Carpeted Stairs.

4. UPHOLSTERY NOZZLE For Upholstered Furniture, Draperies,Tapestries, Mattresses, Clothing, Automobile Interiors, Stairs.

5. DUSTING BRUSH For Carved Furniture, Table Tops, Books,Lamps, Light Fixtures, Venetian Blinds, Registers, Baseboards.

6. CREVICE TOOL For Upholstered Furniture, Edges of Wall-to-Wall Carpeting, Radiators, Dresser Drawers.

The vinyl tool kit has been,designedso the tools can be packed insideand the hose attached, by strap, onouts ide. The ki t has two s lotslocated near the top for ease inhanging on the cover latch of thecleaner or on a hook in the closet.

TO CLEAN TOOLSTo clean the hose, wipe off dirt witha cloth, dampened with a liquiddetergent. Use a damp cloth to re-move the detergent. Cleaning toolscan be washed in warm water with adetergent. Rinse and let dry beforeusing.

TO CONNECT HOSE TO CLEANERInsert hose connector in opening below dial. Turn hose connectorin either direction until it locks in place.

TO CONNECT TOOLSTo connect the cleaning tools to either the telescoping wand orhose, press down on the plastic latch and fit the attachment intoplace making sure the button on the attachment is locked inplace. To release, press down on plastic spring latch and remove.

HELPFUL HINTS

EASY TO CARRY Use the comfort-able handle grip for carrying your Hoovercleaner, or move it from room to room bytipping it back on wheels and pushing it.

DON’T PICK UP TACKS Hard,sharp objects should not be picked upby the cleaner. They may damage thehose and the throw-away bag.

TAKE CARE OF CORD It shouldbe wound loosely on cover latch andlever on Suction Control Dial to avoidunnecessary strain. The clip-on plugsnaps directly onto the cord. Don’t runyour cleaner over the cord - it maydamage the insulation.

IF TROUBLE OCCURS If thecleaner does not pick up surface dirt,it is an indication that something iswrong. Here are some of the things youshould check before calling the serviceman. If you need further help, call yourHoover Dealer or Hoover Factory BranchService Station listed on the service page.

1. Check Nozzle Hose

The nozzle hose on the cleaner carriesthe dirt from the nozzle to the throw-away bag. If an object lodges across theentrance of the hose, remove bottomplate (see Page II), pull hose fromcleaner and remove object. Replacehose, making sure that metal collar islodged completely ins ide the hoseconnection. Then replace bottom plate.If hose is clogged as a result of the

throw-away bag being full of fluff from a new carpet, put a newthrow-away bag on the cleaner. Then place handle in storageposition, turn cleaner on, and move lever on Suction Control Dialback and forth. This will clear the hose.

2. Check Secondary Filter

The secondary filter protects themotor from dirt. Before installing anew bag, check the filter. Dirtspil led in the bag housing wil laccumulate on the filter and mayrestrict motor performance. To cleanfilter, remove wire holder and liftout filter. Tap against a hard sur-face, or rinse thoroughly with warmwater and dry. Replace in baghousing and secure with holder.

WHEN TO REPLACE THE BAG

Check the bag from time to time. When bag isapproximately three-fourths full of dirt, it shouldbe changed. If you let more dirt than this accum-ulate, your cleaner will not operate efficiently.Be sure that throw-away bag is not extendingoutside of cover and that cover is in properposition on the gasket before latching.

Tip cleaner over, resting handle onthe floor. @pen bag cover of cleanerby turning latch in either direction.Lift bag cover. Hold throw-awaybag by cardboard cover, twist out-ward, and remove. Discard used bag.

To attach new throw-away bag, holdbag with cardboard collar down andwith arrows pointing toward front ofcleaner. Push hole in cardboardfirmly over tube, twisting until bagis secure. Be sure that throw-awaybag is not extending outside of coverand that cover is in proper positionon the gasket before latching.

WHERE TO BUY BAGS

Keep a supply of Throw-Away Bags on hand. They may bepurchased at your local Authorized Hoover Dealer (listed inin the Yellow Pages of your Telephone Directory under “Vac-uum Cleaners” - Hoover) or from Hoover Factory BranchService Stations listed on the service page of this book.

Remove bottom plate from cleaner(see Fig, 1) and check from time totime to be sure the belt is in goodcondition. If it is stretched or cut,it should be replaced.

HOW TO REPLACE

THE BELT

Turn cleaner over. Remove metalplate on bottom of cleaner bypushing latches toward the out-side of cleaner. Lift plate to re-lease it from wire holders.

Push latches, that hold agitator,in and toward center of cleaneruntil they are free. Lift outagitator and remove old belt.

Place new belt over motor pulley,with smooth side next to pulley,then over agitator.

Replace agitator and latch it inposition.

Make sure that belt is in centerof pulley and free of agitatormountings and latch. Turn agitatorby hand to be sure that belt is inproper position in pulley groove.

Replace bot tom plate . Placemetal knobs, on front of plate, inwire holders. Check to see thatlatches are pushed back and willnot be covered by plate. Placeplate in position and latch se-cure ly . Turn agitator by hand tobe sure that belt is in properposition on pulley.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE BELT

The belt of your Hoover cleaner controls the speed of the agitatorand is important for the efficient operation of your cleaner. Be-cause of this, when buying a new belt, you should always insiston a genuine Hoover belt. Some other belts on the market, notmanufactured under Hoover design and quality controls, do notoperate the agitator correctly and create undue stress which willdamage your Hoover cleaner. The use of other than genuineHoover belts voids your guarantee. Genuine Hoover belts havethe name HOOVER. printed on the belt.

THE BRUSHES

WHEN TO REPLACE BRUSHES

The brushes on your cleaner aremade of quality nylon which willlast approximately four times longerthan horsehair. Check occasionallyby laying a piece of cardboardacross nozzle. If bristles do nottouch the edge of cardboard, newbrushes are needed. Always replaceboth brushes at the same time.

TO REPLACE BRUSHES

Remove the belt and agitator, following directions given onPages 10 and 11.

2. After plate is removed,pry out the end sectionas shown in illustration.

3. After plate is removed,tap the shaft gently witha hammer.

4. Pull other plate and theshaft from agitator.

5. Remove brushes by pull-ing them from agitator.If they do not come outeasily, pull them outwith pliers.

&Install new brushes bysliding them into thechannel, making surethat the small end goesin first. Push in as faras possible.

7. Replace end plate andshaft. Remember to lineup locator with the sloton the agitator. Replaceother end section and endplate and then tighten.

When ordering new parts make sure that you always mention the model number.This is given on the cover of your Instruction Book and on the Motor Plate ofthe appliance.

Lubrication -- Depending on the product, motors are equipped with either twoSleeve Bearings or a combination of one Sleeve Bearing and one Ball Bearing.They are lubricated for the life of the motor and it will not be necessary tolubricate either one; in fact, the addition of lubricant to the Sleeve Bearingcould cause damage.
