The target language is Portuguese, which will provide to Parkside and other Murray elementary students an exciting opportunity to leave 6th grade bilingual and biliterate – able to fluently speak, read, and write in two languages. Parkside will follow the successful Spanish Dual Immersion Program at Horizon Elementary School, now in its third year. In August, 2012, approximately 56 first graders in two classes will learn the same Utah state core curriculum that all first graders are taught with one difference – they will learn math, science, and social studies in Portuguese from a teacher who speaks only Portuguese for one half of their school day. During the second half of their day, they will learn the English Language Arts curricu- lum from their English-speaking teacher. The teacher team, one English-speaking and one Portuguese-speaking, work very closely together to ensure that all students in the two classes are successful in all content areas. Any incoming first grader is eligible and the parent/guardian must apply to have the child participate in the Dual Immersion Program. Parents/guardians are asked to commit to the full six years, first through sixth grades, so that each child receives the full benefit of this wonderful opportunity. All other students will be placed in the regular program in which they will learn the same curriculum in English only. Parkside will be one of only two Utah schools offering Portuguese Dual Immersion next year. Murray School District and Parkside chose to provide this opportunity for many reasons. With over 220 million speakers, Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world and is the official language of eight countries. The most widely spoken language in South America, Portuguese is second only to English as the most widely used language on websites and in blogging. Also noteworthy is the fact that Brazil is considered by many scientists to be the country with the most important biodiversity in the world. Finally, Brazil’s economy is expanding rapidly and is currently ranked 7th in the world in GDP. Martha Kupferschmidt, Director of Teaching and Learning, encourages families to consider this program for their children. “Five- and six-year-old children are at the optimal age to begin acquiring a second language. To be able to do this in a safe envi- ronment while learning the required curriculum is a wonderful opportunity that will result in many benefits to these children. Not only will they become stronger learners, they will be more culturally and globally aware, as well as more likely to learn additional languages. This is truly a win-win proposition for students!” Photos of Dual Immersion Spanish program at Horizon Elementary are shown at top of page.
