LIFE IN THE LONDON OFFICE
Our firm’s ethos calls for trainees who relish hard work and intellectual challenge. You
will be ambitious, keen to assume professional responsibility from the start of your
career and determined to become a successful partner in a first-class law firm.
From the outset, you will be treated as an integral part of our team and your creative
contribution to transactions will be encouraged. Most of the transactions you will work
on will have an international and multi-jurisdictional element.
One of the advantages of training with Shearman & Sterling in London is that, although
the office is growing rapidly, you will be part of a smaller team in a relatively informal
yet professional atmosphere. You will be given real and challenging work at an early
stage and your enthusiasm, intellect and opinion will be greatly valued.
The firm and its individual practice groups provide many opportunities for trainees to
get to know one another and the partners, associates and other staff. A wide range of
social events are held throughout the year, enabling partners, associates and trainees to
form important bonds.
Our goal is to recruit people who will stay with us and who want to become partners in
our continuing success story.
“shearman & sterling llp is one of the most successful u.s. firms in
london.”

Phase 2 Reception

4 | Shearman & Sterling LLP
My priorities when choosing a firm at which to do my training contract were
threefold. Firstly, I wanted a firm that provided the highest quality and best regarded
training in the City. Secondly, I wanted a firm that worked for the biggest and most
prestigious clients on their most important deals. Finally, I wanted a firm that
viewed their trainees as an investment, ensuring that they were fully involved in all
aspects of deals and were integrated and valued members of the team. Shearman &
Sterling provided these three aspects in a friendly, hard working atmosphere.
It became apparent during my two week internship that the character and ethos of
the firm was rather different to that of most other City firms. In general, teams were
smaller, with junior lawyers, both trainees and newly qualifieds, very much involved
in the nitty gritty of deals. The atmosphere was one of enthusiastic determination.
Everyone, from partner to trainee, seemed to muck in to get work done, and even as
a summer intern, my work was overseen by a partner who took the time to offer
comments and constructive criticism.
Life at Shearman & Sterling is undoubtedly
hard work. Trainees are given high quality work
which is often challenging and difficult.
However, the approachability of everyone in the
office ensures that you are given the guidance
and support that you need whenever and for
whomever you are working. I have completed
two seats and am now in Project Finance, and
despite the hugely different nature of the
departments I have worked in, I have been given
consistently challenging and high quality work.
Life as a trainee at Shearman & Sterling
involves more than just doing your job. Work aside, there are a huge amount of
extracurricular activities going on, whether it be pro bono, ski trips, Law Society
softball or just plain drinks after work.
MICHAEL BUCKWORTH | TRAINEE
“The huge variety of work on
innovative and cutting-edge deals,
combined with extensive guidance
and support from supervisors and
other members of your team,
ensures that your working day at
Shearman & Sterling is rewarding
and challenging.”

I chose to train at Shearman & Sterling because I wanted the chance to take part in
high-level transactions with an international element; to work closely with
interesting people; and to be given quality work. The firm has allowed me to do just
that, because we maintain a leading position in our key practice areas, and yet our
London office is smaller than those of the leading UK firms. The firm also has an
extremely strong pro bono practice and I'm hoping to do some work at the
International War Crimes Tribunal in Tanzania next year.
I've just finished my second seat in the Antitrust group, where I worked on two
merger control deals that involved some extended time in the US and Europe. It was
a fantastic opportunity, as I was given lots of client exposure and responsibility for
managing discrete parts of the process. More generally, during my time here I've
taken part in plenty of meetings and conference calls, and have always felt as though
people are trying as much as possible to feed
good work my way. At Shearman & Sterling
you'll be given as much responsibility as you
can handle, so I think it's a good place for
people who like to rise to the challenge.
I'd describe the atmosphere here as informal
but hardworking and professional. That said,
there's no pressure to stay late for the sake of it
and I would say that the social side of the firm
is another strength, be it the departmental off-sites or the more informal activities
that regularly take place.
GEORGE MILTON | TRAINEE
“At Shearman & Sterling, there's a
real opportunity to take on
responsibility and get noticed. The
global reach and fast pace
guarantee an enjoyable and
challenging training contract.”

DATA COMPILED FROM TRAINEE & NEWLY QUALIFIED SOLICITOR FEEDBACK
Your legal career in the UK | 15
16 | Shearman & Sterling LLP
It was during my initial interview at Shearman & Sterling that I decided that this
was where I wanted to complete my training contract. There was no gloss and no
"think outside the box" tasks to complete. During my summer placement I
witnessed more of the same. On my first day I was given challenging work and
expected to get on with it. Obviously, there was always help if I needed it, but I was
given a real chance to show my initiative and, more importantly, make a difference
to the deal on which I was working.
Life as a trainee at Shearman & Sterling isn't easy but it is rewarding. We are
constantly exposed to top quality work and high profile deals. Our clients are
demanding because they are the leaders in their respective markets. Since we are
encouraged to take on the role of a junior associate and not that of a trainee, we are
often exposed to a high degree of client contact, which includes being involved in
conference calls and attending meetings.
It is important to remember that there will be no pattern to the work you will do. As
a forward-thinking and constantly evolving firm, you will often be asked to do work
that you might not expect but which will invariably teach you some valuable lessons.
Furthermore, the lawyers here are open-
minded and willing to listen to any new
ideas that you might have. Communication
at all levels is positively encouraged. You will
discover a work environment which is
professional yet relaxed and where so-
cialising with your colleagues is as important
as working with them.
At Shearman & Sterling you are encour-
aged to develop as a lawyer in your own
right. The emphasis on organic growth is
evident from the in-depth reviews you will receive on a regular basis. Whilst the firm
undoubtedly has its business needs, as a trainee you are an investment.
“At Shearman & Sterling, we are
recognised as individuals. There is a
universal awareness that one size
does not fit everyone. To this extent,
our training contracts are tailored to
suit our needs rather than just those
of the firm.”

Shearman & Sterling offers all the advantages of working at a magic circle firm
and more. It not only offers the best deals and multi-jurisdictional cutting edge
work, but the small trainee intake fosters a more personal and nurturing work
environment.
You are given real responsibility. The learning curve is steep as you are encouraged
to use your initiative and there is a lot of direct client contact, but time is taken to
explain the context as well as the task and people are happy to answer questions.
My first seat was with the International Litigation and Arbitration group, joining six
weeks before the start of an arbitration hearing for an international commercial
dispute. I was involved in all aspects of the work, from preparation of bundles and
drafting submissions and discussions with the client and barristers, to the
celebration dinners at the end. I also drafted court documents and attended
hearings at the Royal Courts of Justice. I was able to liaise with clients on a regular
basis and even went to New York for a
meeting with the Chief Executive of a large
multinational to prepare his witness
statement; something I was able to do alone
because of the experience and exposure I had
gained during the seat.
Acquisition Finance was a completely diff-
erent experience as it is a fast paced trans-
actional group. I worked on high profile
deals where I was responsible for discrete
parts of the transaction and interacted with
counsel in other jurisdictions. I also worked on smaller projects where I could
manage much of the transaction under the supervision of an associate. There was a
real sense of joint achievement at each closing.
I am really enjoying the international flavour of the work in my current seat in
Project Development and Finance, working on projects in the UK, Kenya, Pakistan
and the Middle East.
I haven't made a decision on my final seat yet and don't feel pressured to do so, as
the size of the trainee intake means that it's likely that your requirements can be
accommodated.
KAM NIJAR | TRAINEE
"Working at Shearman & Sterling
gives you a real flavour for how the

treated as a junior member of the

During your two-year training, you will spend six months
in each of four practice areas, which will include two of
our three core practice areas, Banking, Project
Development and Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions.
You may also have an opportunity to spend six months in
New York, Brussels, Abu Dhabi or Singapore in the
second year of your training. You will share an office with
a senior associate, but you will be involved in the work of
the whole practice group, experiencing a variety of deals
and transactions.
At the end of each seat, you will have a formal appraisal
and a progress review. You will also have an informal
review mid-way through each seat, although we
encourage discussion of any issues as they arise.
We encourage trainees to assume significant
responsibility for client matters early in their careers. To
prepare you for this, we provide an extensive training
programme that deals not only with conventional legal
topics, but also with specialised skills and knowledge that
will contribute to your professional growth. Our aim is to
develop you into a well-rounded business lawyer capable
of inspiring total confidence in your clients.
Your training begins with an introduction to our firm and
practice, which involves a formal induction with over 50
partners and associates. You will learn about matters
such as organising your work efficiently and adapting
your research and writing skills to your assignments.
From the outset you will be an integrated member of your
YOUR TRAINING EXPERIENCE
team with your own BlackBerry and mobile phone. At the
same time you will have an associate mentor to guide you
from day one.
Next, you will attend workshops to familiarise yourself
with the legal issues that you will encounter and with
practical tasks, such as drafting and negotiating
documents and managing cases or transactions. The
programmes are also designed to help you make an
informed decision about your future seats.
Since we have a significant US practice in the London
office (approximately 40 lawyers), we are also able to offer
our trainees direct exposure and experience of US legal
practice groups as well as a thriving cross-cultural
environment.
Upon qualification, the continuing professional
development programme will keep you abreast of the
latest developments in the legal field relevant to your
specialised area of practice. Plus, you will also look to
develop and enhance your skills in a number of critical
business areas, including business development,
management and financial awareness.
Since it can be up to two years between receiving your
offer and your start date, it is important that you maintain
contacts with the firm during this period. We will hold
regular lunches for you with existing trainees, partners
and associates. Future trainees are also encouraged to
drop into the office regularly to meet with staff.
“Small teams combined with world-wide resources means responsibility is given
early and guarantees an engaging and challenging training contract.”

I was very careful where I applied for training contracts while at university. However, I was
immediately attracted to Shearman & Sterling because of the recognition it commands throughout
the world for providing excellent levels of expertise and advice in the fields it centres its practice
around.
A focus on core areas and a drive to maintain market leadership, accompanied by the fact that
Shearman & Sterling in London is relatively small in size compared to other city firms, meant the
level of work I undertook as a trainee was of a high quality. The amount of responsibility I was given
in each seat encouraged confidence, but at no point was I ever made to feel pressured. You are always
supervised and everybody is constantly available to help and
answer any questions you may have.
I was fortunate during my two year training contract to spend
six months in the Abu Dhabi project finance department.
The experience not only gave me exposure to a new culture
and business environment, but also allowed me to grow as a
trainee, through extensive interaction with new clients and
styles of work.
The opportunities, support and encouragement I received as
a trainee meant that qualifying at Shearman & Sterling would
be the only progressive step to take.
