This is a time to celebrate personalmilestones and national holidays, fromgraduations to marriages and memorialservices to fireworks. The air is filledwith the smoky essences of BBQs andbirds, and crickets sound off their collective songs.

It is human nature to embrace any andall opportunities to gather, celebrateand create memories, especially duringthe summer months. Sweaters are putaway and flip-flops are brought outwith an air of anticipation for comfortand freedom. The beaches and wavesare filled with vacationers and weekendwarriors alike as we truly love the para-dise nature has provided along ourCalifornia coast.

We tend to get wrapped up in themoment of celebration and forget thesafety factors of being in the heat andsun. Please be aware of the dangers ofexcessive sun exposure, heat stroke andfood safety. I know—I sound like amother hen, but that’s my job—to be protective and vigilant about your health.

In this issue, we address the importanceof detecting skin cancer and the preven-tive steps to safety and protection, learn-ing to listen to your body, and healthysteps to take before and during pregnancy. We also explore the stresses of personalfinances, provide tips for a better personal relationship and explain whatall the quacking is about with Aflac.

Go out there and celebrate the seasonand each other. One of the healthiestthings you can do for yourself is to besurrounded by friends and loved onesand laugh out loud.

Celebrate you, celebrate your healthand celebrate life to its fullest!

DENTALEMERGENCY—KNOCKED-OUTTOOTH

STEVEN HEVER, DDSwww.westlakevillagecadentist.com860 Hampshire Road, Suite EWestlake Village, CA 91361805.777.7447

IT’S JOHNNY’S FIRST DAY AS CATCHER INLITTLE LEAGUE. The bat comes back andhits catcher Johnny’s face. His fronttooth is knocked loose—an all toofamiliar scenario at the dental office.

If this ever happens to one of your kids, don’t panic. Here is what you need toknow.

Time is of the essence. Modern studieshave shown that 5 minutes to an hour is the window for success for re-stabi-lizing the tooth. If the tooth is fullyknocked out do not use any cleaningchemicals on it. After the accident, thetooth should be located and picked upby the crown or enamel portion and NOTthe root. If the tooth is dirty or contami-nated, it should gently be rinsed withmilk or water. Do not store the tooth inwater. If a primary (baby) tooth isknocked out, do NOT try and reimplant ityourself. This could cause damage tothe permanent tooth bud in formation.

The good news is that the success ratefor tooth reimplantation is high. Yourdentist will stabilize the tooth and moni-tor it over the next few months.

Take a preventive approach and getmouthguards made for sports. This waythey can keep their teeth in their mouthand not in your hands.

Questions can be addressed to Dr. Hever by emailing [email protected]

HEALTH TIPS & TIDBITS

THE HEAT IS ON…SUMMER’S HERE AND IT IS TIME TO ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF THE SEASON, BUT BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL DANGERS

OF BEING EXPOSED TO THE SUN AND HEAT.

Keep bottled waterwith you when out andabout in the car, work-ing in the garden or onthe beach. Sugary soft

drinks and alcoholicbeverages do notcount – they only

dehydrate the bodyeven more. Eating

plenty of fresh fruitsand vegetables are

also helpful in keepingyour body hydrated.

If you find yourselfthirsty, your brain istelling you that your

body is already indehydration mode.

INCREASE YOURWATER INTAKE

Protect yourself fromthe dangerous rays of

the midday sun. Alarge-brimmed hat andplenty of sunscreen are

needed for proper protection from the

dangers of sunburn andthe increased risk of

skin cancer. Rememberto apply 30 minutes

prior to going out andreapply if you perspire

or swim. To understand the

SPF numbers, theMelanoma Foundation

explains it this way,“While an SPF of 2 will absorb 50% of

ultraviolet radiation, anSPF of 15 absorbs 93%

and an SPF of 34absorbs 97%.”

EXTRA PROTECTION

We tend to forget thatsun exposure is hard onour eyes as well. Longterm exposure to UV

radiation without prop-er eye protection maycause cataracts, dam-age to the retinas andin severe cases, macu-

lar degeneration.The American

Optometric Associationrecommends that you

have proper UV protec-tive lenses that block

out 75 to 90 percent ofvisible light. This

doesn’t just apply toregular sun exposure, but also when snowskiing or exposure to

laser lights.

THE EYES HAVE IT

Seniors tend to bemore susceptible toheat stroke this time

of year; they try tosave money by not

using their home air-conditioning units

properly. The resultis an extremely dan-

gerous situation. Please remember tocheck on your par-ents and grandpar-ents and make surethey are cool, safe

and hydrated.

STAY COOL

Little ones and petsare the most vulnera-ble when it comes to

heat exposure. Donot leave them in thecar! The interior of acar can quickly soar

to 90 degrees even ifit’s 78 degrees and in

the shade. It onlytakes minutes for a

car to become adeadly environmentfor a child or pet. It’sdangerous and illegal

– take the childrenwith you and leavethe pets at home

unless they can bewith you at all times.

SKIN CANCER, OR THE ABNORMAL GROWTH OF SKIN CELLS, IS THEMOST COMMON OF ALL CANCERS. THE MAIN CAUSE OF SKIN CANCERIS UNPROTECTED AND EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV)RAYS, PRIMARILY FROM THE SUN. MORE THAN ONE MILLION CASESARE DIAGNOSED EVERY YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES.

it begins in the melanocytes, the pigment-making cells of the skin. it often appears asa large brownish spot, a simple mole,dome-shaped bumps, dark lesions or asmall lesion with an irregular border.

early diagnosis is critical in curingmelanoma. “once it spreads to the lymphsystem and other internal organs, the prog-nosis is poor. it’s very likely to cause death,”says dr. peter Karlsberg, a dermatologist atcommunity memorial hospital in ventura.

both the american cancer society and theamerican academy of dermatology rec-ommend following the “abcde rule” tospot the usual signs of melanoma. be on thelookout and tell your doctor about anyspots that match the following description:

A is for ASYMMETRY one half of a moleor birthmark does not match the other.

B is for BORDER the edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.

C is for COLOR the color is not the sameall over and may include shades of brown orblack, or sometimes with patches of red, white, or blue.

D is for DIAMETER the spot is largerthan 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch —the size of a pencil eraser) or is growinglarger.

E is for EVOLVING look for changesover time, such as a mole that grows in sizeor that changes color or shape. moles mayalso evolve to develop new signs and symp-toms, such as new itchiness or bleeding.

this cancer develops primarily on sun-exposed skin but canalso form beneath the fingernails, in the spaces between toesand on other body parts that are normally not sun-exposed.

there are three main types of skin cancer, the most commonof which (about 70 percent) is basal cell carcinoma. this cancer develops in the basal cells or the skin cells located inthe lowest layer of the epidermis. it is considered the leastdangerous because it rarely metastasizes or spreads to otherorgans. it can appear as a pearly or waxy bump on the face, ears or neck, or as a flat, flesh-colored or brown scar-likelesion on the chest or back.

squamous cell carcinoma is not as common as basal cell carcinoma, but is considered more dangerous because it canmetastasize. it accounts for about 20 percent of skin cancers.this cancer begins in the squamous cells, found in the upperlayer of the epidermis. it can take the form of a firm, red nod-ule or a flat lesion with a scaly, crusted surface on the face, lips, ears, arms, neck or hands.

considered the most serious form of skin cancer, melanomaaccounts for about 5 percent of all diagnosed skin cancers.

1 Examine your body front and back in the mirror, then look at the right and left sides with your arms raised.

2 Bend elbows and look carefully at forearms, upper underarms, and palms.

3 Look at the backs of your legs and feet, the spaces between your toes, and on the soles.

4 Examine the back of your neck and scalp with ahand mirror; part hair for a closer look.

5 Finally, check your back and buttocks with a hand mirror.

contrary to popular belief, skin cancer canaffect people of all skin tones, from thepalest to the darkest individuals. however, those with light-colored skin, eyes and hairare at a higher risk. less pigment or melaninin fair-skinned individuals provides lessprotection from dangerous uv radiation.

a family history of skin cancer alsoincreases one’s risk of developing skin can-cer, as well as a history of sunburns orexposure to uv rays. a person who hashad skin cancer previously is also at a high-er risk of developing it again.

dr. Karlsberg describes the other risk factors:“moles numbering in the 20s or more in thetrunk area would also concern me. also, pre-cancerous skin lesions on the face, lower armsand hands — these are brown or dark pinkand look like rough, scaly patches.”

early detection is the key to catching skincancer at its most treatable stage.“depending on their history or risk cate-gory, i would recommend a physical examor skin check to establish a baseline,” saysdr. lisa oki, a dermatologist at simivalley hospital. dr. oki also recommendsdoing a skin self-exam (see boxed guide)on or around one’s birthday.

local chapters of the american cancersociety (acs) and the americanacademy of dermatology (aad) havefree skin cancer screening programs peri-odically. check online for schedules.

if your doctor suspects skin cancer, he orshe may need to take a biopsy or a sampleof your skin. this is the only way to tell ifskin cancer is present. the biopsy is anoutpatient procedure using local anesthe-sia to remove the lesion, which is usuallysent to a lab for analysis.

sometimes no treatment is needed beyondthe initial biopsy to remove the entiregrowth. if treatment is necessary, severalfactors need to be taken into considera-

SKIN CANCER

Avoid deliberate sun exposure. UV rays are the most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Wear sunscreen year-round. About 20 to 30 min-utes before stepping outside, cover exposed skinwith sunscreen lotion that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Re-apply as needed, every two hours or so.

Wear protecting clothing. Long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses that block UV rays are good choices.

Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps. They emit UVArays that can cause precancerous skin lesions.

Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications. Alert yourdoctor about the medications you are taking, forpotential side effects. Some of them can make youmore sensitive to sunlight.

Check your skin regularly and report changes to yourdoctor. Check for new skin growths or changes toexisting moles, freckles and birthmarks.

YOUR BODY IS TELLING YOUSOMETHING—FOREWARNEDIS FOREARMED!ARE YOU EXPERIENCING HAIR LOSS, CHIPPED NAILS, DARK CIRCLESUNDER YOUR EYES, SWELLING FINGER JOINTS, ACNE OR PSORIASIS?

BY DR. SHARON NORLING

do you notice swelling of your lower legs, bumps on the back of your upper arms, loss ofhair on your arms or rosacea?

if so, you have multiple nutrient deficiencies.but which vitamins, minerals or amino acidsare low? specialty tests can determine your spe-cific imbalances. requesting tests is a betterapproach than going to a drug store or healthfood store, searching through the myriad selec-tions on shelf after shelf and just picking a fewnutrients that may or may not help.

research shows that 40 to 50 percent of over-the-counter supplements, including those onthe internet, contain contaminants and 40 to50 percent do not even contain what the labelindicates.

your health care professional, who is trained innutrition, who knows your medical history, knows the supplements and/or medicationsyou are currently taking, and has your labresults is a better resource for you.individualized care is the key to living your bestlife. treating the average is overrated and oftencounter-productive.

+++Fifty percent ofpeople at age 50

and 85 percent ofthose older than

80 have lowstomach acid.

acid is in your stomach for a couple of reasons. First, to digest your foodand secondly to kill the bacteria, viruses and parasites you eat every day. ifyou are taking an antacid or have low stomach acid your food is not get-ting digested properly. even if you are eating well you can have nutrientdeficiencies.

many published articles in the medical literature today describe the nutrientdeficiencies, including osteoporosis, that result from the use of antacids.

if you have gerd or heartburnit most likely stems from a hid-den immunoglobulin g (igg)food sensitivity, which can bedetermined by a blood test thatchecks 90 different foods.among other purposes, iggantibodies exist to provide uswith an immune response.however, when too many iggantibodies are produced for aspecific food, the antibodies

attach to the food and enter the bloodstream, resulting in an allergic reac-tion. When the patients stops eating the identified foods to which they areallergic, the stomach and esophagus can heal.

these symptoms may also be due to an infection of h. pylori (helicobacterpylori, a stomach bacterium which can also cause peptic ulcers).

if you are a post menopausal woman with hair loss you may also havethis digestive issue. Fifty percent of people at age 50 and 85 percent ofthose older than 80 have low stomach acid. this may be why we see theolder population getting thinner, shorter and more frail. they are nutri-ent-deprived.

if you are a middle-aged woman and have much less hair on your arms andlegs than you once did, have your dhea checked. replacing dhea to the normal level is a good idea, not only for your hair, but to enhanceyour immune system and decrease the risk of cancer. thinning hair can be caused by low dhea, thyroid dysfunction, lack of b vitamins or hormonal imbalances.

if it is painful to brush your hair, you probably need more vitamin d.have your vitamin d checked and your doctor will recommend howmuch you need. low levels of vitamin d can cause increased risk of heartdisease, cancer, diabetes, alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syn-drome and depression.

if your eyes are chronically red and itching, eye drops from a compoun-ding pharmacy containing vitamin a and vitamin c often relieve thesesymptoms. dark circles under your eyes may be caused by lack of sleep butoften are a sign of hidden food allergies.

recently i took an extensive nutritional coursegiven by drs. alan gaby and Jonathan Wright.both are well-respected, published physiciansin the field of medical nutrition. this article isbased on their course and dr. gaby’s newbook, Medical Nutrition, 2012, comprised of1,500 pages and 15,000 scientific references.

if you are a younger woman with hair loss thereis a good chance you may have low stomachacid. in most cases, incomplete protein digesti-on with subnormal stomach acid results in lowlevels of amino acids and essential minerals. inthis situation, supplementation with hydro-chloric acid and pepsin capsules can correctyour low stomach acid for better digestion.people with low stomach acid may experiencebelching or bloating after eating.

do you have small, red, dilated veinson your nose or cheeks? this can bedue to low stomach acid, too muchalcohol or both!

nose stuffiness may be due to inha-lant allergies, but food allergies areoften overlooked. polyps in the nosemay be due to sensitivity of salicylatessuch as aspirin, many artificial colorsor flavors, as well as foods containingsalicylates: raisins, grapes, berries, cucumbers, peppers and beverages.

is your tongue cracked and grooved?this is a deficiency of folic acid, vita-min b12 and zinc. be patient, it’lltake months to clear. When usingvitamin b12 or folic acid, be sure touse the methylated form—methylco-balamin (b12) and folinic acid or 5-methyl tetrahydrafolate. sixty per-cent of people cannot methylate so itis best to use the bio-available form.

do you have a canker sore on yourgums? there is a high probably youhave food allergies. also check yourtoothpaste, since sodium lauryl sulfa-te can contribute to canker sores.using a probiotic, iron, b12, and fola-te can lessen canker sores.

do you get cracks in the side of yourmouth? riboflavin, b2, can makethese go away.

acne on the face and chest can be eli-minated by removing food allergies, healing the gastrointestinal tract, andeliminating sugar and refined carbo-hydrates. add foods that contain zincand essential fatty acids such as sun-flower and pumpkin seeds. meat isalso high in zinc. supplements ofzinc, fatty acids, selenium and vita-min e are also helpful.

persistent pain at the base of one or both thumbs may be relieved by a series of daily vitamin b12 injections. if this works, you probab-ly have low stomach acid and are notdigesting your food well or absorbingyour nutrients.

do you have chronic swelling in yourlower legs? make sure you have teststo rule out serious disorders such ascardiovascular, liver or kidney disease.if the results are negative, your swel-ling could be due to insulin resistancetype 2 diabetes, toxins or food allergi-es (allergies sound like a consistenttheme but it is so true).

thick calluses on your heels are oftendue to low vitamin a. use 50,000 to65,000 iu of vitamin a daily. this issafe for adults. in two to threemonths the calluses should be smal-ler and in eight to nine months theyshould be gone. then go back tousing only 25,000 iu of vitamin a. ifthe heels do not have calluses but aredry and cracked, you need to use

more essential fatty acids (for the dryness)and zinc (for the cracking). this works fordry, cracked fingertips, too.

nutrient deficiencies can be caused bypoor diets, low stomach acid, antacids, food allergies or gastrointestinal dysfuncti-on. if you can’t digest your food or absorbyour nutrients it is only a matter of timebefore symptoms occur, followed by moreserious illnesses. the only way we live andheal is by the water we drink, the air webreathe and the food we eat.

WEALTH CREATIONS

IN SPEAKING WITH SEVERAL PROFESSIONALtherapist friends it seems people seek therapy for threepri- mary issues: family, sex and money. Family is a mys-tery to me (not my wife and kids) and sex is not a subjectthat would endear you to my writing. so, money it is.

Why can money issues be so stressful? it’s simple really—we live in a capitalist society. as such, when you don’t paya bill for a service or product, the service or product istaken away from you. When the item was one you, yourfamily or your business relied on (such as your home orfood), this creates tremendous pressure, which for mostof us results in stress. this stress can be very harmful toyour health.

money is a leading source of stress for americans, accord-ing to a 2007 survey by the american psychologicalassociation. in the survey, 73 percent of the respondentscited money as a significant source of stress in their lives.

today more than three out of every four american fam-ilies are in debt according to the Federal reserve's surveyof consumer Finances. so, what exactly can we do tomake life more of what we need and want?

the simple answer is to make more (money), save more(money) and spend less (money).

however, that’s only part of the answer. We need toknow the actions we can take to accomplish the aboveand then we need to do them to create some semblanceof balance.

Why? even those who make plenty of money and haveplenty of savings suffer from a great deal of stress. theyoften work 60 to 80 hours each week, fail to get enoughsleep, eat poorly—and to top it off—spend very littletime with their spouses and kids. talk about stress!

Here are a few ideas to help you reduce stress and makemore money:

1) If you sit a lot in your job, get up out of your chair. Nobody said phone and computer work had to be accomplished while sitting down. If you absolutely cannot get up then make sure you stretch at least every 30 minutes.

2) If you are employed, start a small home-based business. You can do anything, although it is highly likely you will find something you believe in and enjoy since there are so many choices. Do not scoff at an extra $200 a month. If you don’t want it, send it to me!

3) If you are self-employed, stop messing around. You don’t have time to waste. Take the morning to write a list of all of the things you do that actually make money and those that don’t. Stop doing everything on the second list. If it must be done, do it only once you have completed the money-making activities. Find inexpensive or free ways to delegate the other activities.

4) Go for a 10-minute walk every day. I don’t care when you do it or even if you do it at the same time each day. Walking requires no special system or CDs to buy and you don’t have to do it on one leg while going up-hill after drinking a special shake. Just do it every day. No excuses. You’ll soon understand why it works.

5) Save some money every day, every week, every month. It doesn’t matter how you do it. Just save. Some of my clients save $1 a day, $25 a month, $10 from each pay check. Put it in a savings account, in a 401k or start an IRA. Match your discretionary spending with savings, start a counter jar or put it in a piggy bank—anything—something is better than nothing.

i know what you’re thinking. What about debt? nothingnew here—pay it off as quickly as possible. period!

make more, save more and spend less. Keep moving, keephealthy and keep balanced. good luck!

BETTER MEN

GETTINGUNSTUCK—FOR MEN

3 STEPS TO

BY WAYNE M. LEVINEDIRECTOR, BETTERMEN COACHING

MOST OF US MEN COME TO A POINT INOUR LIVES WHERE WE FIND OURSELVESSTUCK IN OUR OWN STUFF. it could be inour relationships, our career or in our spiritual jour-ney. but wherever it is, it’s got us unhappy, frustrat-ed, angry, and often times not very pleasant to bearound.

i’ve been that man. how about you?

so how do we get unstuck?

it’s simple. make commitments, take action and beheld accountable. that’s the essence of thebettermen process.

the only obstacle between you and becoming theman you want to be is commitment. When we com-mit to something, we no longer have to struggle witha choice. the choice has already been made. Wemade it. life becomes a little more black and white, which is what commitments are all about. the com-mitment frees us from doubt and allows us to redi-rect our energies to more positive endeavors—liketaking action.

AFLAC - HOW IT WORKS FOR YOU

—SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCETHAT PAYS YOU DIRECTLY

BY ALICIA DOYLE “aflac doesn’t pay the doctors or hospitals. aflacpolicies are designed to  pay benefits directly to theinsured, over and above whatever health insuranceor state disability pays,” explained Kraus, ofsouthern california. “aflac policies help with out ofpocket medical expenses, loss of income, daily livingexpenses, etc. aflac  pays benefits directly to theinsured, and they use the money as they see fit intheir time of need.”

aflac—which stands for american Familylife  assurance company of columbus (ingeorgia)—insures more than 50 million peopleworldwide and is considered a leader in voluntarysupplemental  benefits.  “aflac is a  Fortune 200 company, and we pride ourselves on outstandingcustomer service,” Kraus said.

aflac pays more than  $3 million per day in claimsand processes most claims in 7 to 10 business days.

“aflac benefits have allowed people to continue paying their bills when they’re out of work due to anillness or injury,” Kraus explained. “instead of usingtheir savings, retirement, or even losing their homes, aflac benefits prevent them from having to useother financial resources they’ve worked so hard for.aflac policies give people freedom of choice whenmaking healthcare decisions, and the peace of mindknowing the benefits from aflac can be used howev-er they see fit.”

AS AN INDEPENDENT AGENT REPRESENTING AFLAC, JULIEKRAUS BELIEVES HER ROLE IS CRUCIAL IN TODAY’S ECONOMYBECAUSE MANY PEOPLE ARE BARELY GETTING BY WITHOUT EXTRAMONEY FOR UNEXPECTED MEDICAL EXPENSES THAT ARISE DUE TOILLNESS OR INJURY.

aflac has been listed as one ofFortune’s 100 best companies toWork For for 12 consecutive years, and has also been listed as one ofFortune’s World’s most admiredcompanies for the ninth year. aflacwas praised as one of the World’smost ethical companies byethisphere institute for several consecutive years.

“We recognize that when it comesto purchasing insurance, a big partof the decision is based upon theconsumer’s perception of a companyas being trustworthy, transparentand ethical,” said dan amos, aflacchairman and ceo. “our productsrepresent a promise to customersthat we will be there in their times ofneed, so we are proud to be aWorld’s most ethical company fora sixth straight year because it sendsa strong message from ethisphere—the foremost authority on businessethics—that aflac can be trusted.”

the wellness benefits are a great fea-ture of aflac policies because theypay  people for having annual wellness exams that may already becovered by their health insurance,Kraus said. “other companies dooffer this, but  it is part of whatmakes supplemental policies such asaflac’s unique.”

aflac is available to people ages 18 to64.  “it can be a complement to existing  medical insurance, or forsomeone who may not have anyinsurance, there are also optionsavailable,” Kraus said.

aflac is a great voluntary benefitfor businesses to offer their employ-ees, and both the employer andemployee may experience the bene-fits of pre-tax savings. “many aflacpolicies are also available on a directbasis to individuals,” Kraus said. “iwork with each person individuallyto determine what fits within theirbudget and what meets their needs.it’s a great way to customize yourinsurance package.”

Kraus initially discovered aflacwhen she was looking for a job backin 2003. “i had been working for aninsurance broker for five years and hechanged the direction of his businessand moved to las vegas. i didn’tknow  anything about aflac when iinterviewed, and it was the best deci-sion i’ve ever made.  i’m living theaflac dream, and won’t ever do any-thing else. this is the career for me.”

today “i am so grateful to be part ofaflac,” Kraus said. “i wake up everyday knowing i’m helping people intheir time of need. i can’t changewhat happens to people, but know-ing that aflac and i are doing whatwe can to help make a difference isthe most rewarding part of my job. i am fortunate to represent a compa-ny with great products and services, and a company  with the highestintegrity and customer serviceexpectations. the positive impact ihope to have on my clients is toexceed their expectations.”

HEALTHY PREGNANCY—PRE-CONCEPTION THROUGH DELIVERY

CREATING A LIFE IS ONE OF THE MOST JOYFUL EXPERIENCES AMOTHER CAN HAVE. IN 1999 WHEN I BECAME PREGNANT FOR THEFIRST TIME I WAS EXCITED AND NERVOUS AT THE SAME TIME. I WON-DERED IF I KNEW ENOUGH ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT ICOULD DO TO ENSURE HAVING THE HEALTHIEST, MOST NATURALPREGNANCY AND DELIVERY.

BY KATIE GREELEY DC, CACCP

A 2006 report bythe Centers forDisease Controland Prevention(CDC) stated theaverage Americanhad 116 of 148 synthetic toxins intheir blood.

When your body goes through pregnancy changes they happen so quickly and the new experiences can lead to veryunfamiliar feelings.

the good news is there is a lot you can do before you becomepregnant as well as throughout labor and delivery. Just aswith planning your wedding, before you conceive you needat least six to 12 months to prepare.

With the rise of disorders like autism and adhd you can’tignore what you are eating and exposing yourself to prior to conception.

this is a perfect time to improve your diet. adding prenatalmulti vitamins free from dyes and toxic preservatives is goodbut it shouldn’t stop there. you need to make better lifestylechoices, such as adding organically-grown grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts and sources of protein.

organic is important because, according to theenvironmental Working group (eWg), “eating just fiveservings of fruits and vegetables from the 12 most contami-nated would cause you to consume an average of 14 differentpesticides a day.”

if you have a history of digestive problems, food allergies, bloating or yeast issues, consider a natural detox and digestive tract clean up—assisted by someone who is well-informed. good sources of fiber include ground flaxseed, psyllium husks, bran, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

HEALTH TIPS FOR PREGNANCY

>>

AVOID USING HARMFUL CHEMICALS

you will pass on your intestinal flora to your baby even if it is sub-par. ifyou were bottle-fed, you didn’t receive the natural gut flora from yourmother. if you were prescribed antibiotics for various infections in child-hood, that also reduced the natural flora in your system.

since probiotics decrease intestinal absorption of certain chemicals byfacilitating their excretion, after cleaning up your gut you should imple-ment probiotics in your diet. you should also eliminate alcohol andtobacco use.

a two-year study by eWg showed that newborns were born with 232different toxic chemicals in their bloodstream. a 2006 report by thecenters for disease control and prevention (cdc) stated the averageamerican had 116 of 148 synthetic toxins in their blood. it’s a good ideato have a general blood test prior to conception and also check yourvitamin d levels (d3 in particular).

There are many ways to reduce your use of chemicals, but here aresome common ones:

• Switch to greener cleaning and personal care products. • Use green dry cleaners and carpet cleaners.• Consume water and other fluids using stainless steel or glass bottles.

• Lots of fish and sushi have large amounts of mercury; use a mercury-free source of omega-3 fatty acids.

• Minimize exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and keep cell phones in purses instead of pockets.

• If you plan to remove your mercury-based amalgam dental fillings, do it at least six months prior to conception (select a dentist trained in removing the fillings safely).

• Avoid bedding and clothing with flame retardants that may contain high levels of antimony and toxic substances.

beginning a regular chiropractic care with a family wellness practitionerwill prepare you for childbirth. it will optimize your nerve and immunesystem function and specific adjustments will balance your pelvic musclesand ligaments.

There are many things you should eliminate during pregnancy. Someof these are:

• Artificial sweeteners.• Soft drinks.• Pre-packaged foods and foods with trans-fats.• Fast food.• White flour and refined sugar.• All mercury exposure such as in dental work, flu shots and fish.• Antibiotics and other over the counter and prescription medication (no pharmaceutical drug on the market has beenproven safe for pregnancy. New studies show antidepressants are especially dangerous).

There is also a list of things you shoulddo before, during and after pregnancy:

• Optimize your cardiac health—begin or continue your exercise routine. Exercise encourages good bowel movements as well as improving circulation. Walking 15 to 45 minutes four to five times a week and/or incorporating prenatal yoga, swimming or a stationary bicycle are all good exercises.

• There is a higher risk of autism in cesarean-delivered babies. Your baby’s neurological func-tion could be limited by skip-ping labor. Being able to walk and push on all fours will help your pelvis open and birth with greater ease, thus minimizing the forceful use of doctor-assisted pulling, forceps and vacuum extraction.

• Minimize intrusive procedures during labor such as multiple ultrasounds, induction, pain meds, epidurals, early cord clamping, etc. by researching and discussing these with your midwife or doctor.

• Maintain good blood sugar levels by eating six small mealsa day.

start building a pregnancy health care teamearly during your pregnancy. interviewmidwives or obstetricians until you findone who makes you feel comfortable andempowered. interview doulas, lactationconsultants, prenatal instructors, familywellness chiropractors and pediatriciansearly. discuss your views on health openly.

home births are not for all, but in 2005the british medical Journal found naturalbirth at home with certified practicingmidwives is safe for low-risk mothers andtheir babies. they also found home birthshad much lower rates of medical interven-tions compared to births in hospitals.

consider breast-feeding your baby. notonly is this great to bond but it’s one of thebest ways to provide optimal nutrition.

minimize the possibility of food allergiesby postponing solid foods until at least 6months. start with organic vegetables thenintroduce fruits. make sure you wait atleast four days between new food introduc-tions to make sure there are no reactions.

don’t introduce grains until your baby hasteeth, when the digestive enzyme to breakgrains down is first present.

if mom has a history of eczema, food aller-gies and/or celiac, then avoid dairy, soy, gluten and grains.

birthing can be strenuous for mother andbaby, so both of you should be checked bya chiropractor who specializes in pediatricsto support strong nerve and immunesystem function.

if your fetus is abnormally positioned,“the Webster protocol is a specific chiro-practic sacral analysis and diversifiedadjustment. the goal of the adjustment isto reduce the effects of the sacral subluxa-tion/sacroiliac (si) joint dysfunction. indoing so the neuro-biomechanical functi-on in the pelvis is facilitated.”

in a practice-based study, 70 percent ofpregnancies presenting with an abnormalposition of the fetus reported a correctionto the vertex or head-down position usingthe Webster technique.

all-in-all, it’s important to evaluate yourlifestyle choices so you can pass on the best toyour children. it is a small sacrifice for theirhealth and well-being—they’re worth it.

>>

all of us enjoy having a reason to celebrate. our human nature andour culture have put the spotlight on specific days and moments tocelebrate. We are all familiar with the joy of a wedding, a birthdayparty or an anniversary. We hold lavish parties, give gifts, eat greatfood and spend time with our loved ones.

the word celebration is often used in conjunction with a group ofindividuals. We have been taught that celebrations require a partyof people, but this line of thinking prevents us from the bliss of cel-ebrating alone. While the concept may seem foreign, some of ourmost important celebrations can be performed in the company ofonly yourself.

often the largest transformations in our lives occur during our solojourneys. in my work as a psychotherapist and life coach, i findthese shifts occur after there has been a major loss in someone’s life.Whether it is the loss of a significant relationship through death ordivorce, a child moving off to college, the loss of a business partneror losing someone emotionally to the disease of substance abuse, most individuals i work with find these losses can actually becomepositive gains when seen from a different perspective.

the calm after the storm of a major change often becomes ourgreatest celebration. Whether you are celebrating your newfoundfreedom or you’ve been able to let go of some past trauma, it is nowtime to celebrate you.

it doesn’t matter where you are on your journey through life; we allneed to take a moment to reflect.

Where have you been? What goals have you accomplished in yourlife? how did you accomplish them? these are three questions youshould ask yourself at least once a year. if you haven’t started a jour-nal, this is a great time to start, and answering these questions willhelp guide you.

all too often we get caught up in the day-to-day grind and we miss seeing elements of ourlives we take for granted. taking a momentto reflect will remind you of all of the bless-ings that have manifested in your life.

For some, these elements are material. youmay have a great house, a nice car and all ofthe tech toys you want. For others, these ele-ments are not material in nature. they mayinclude good health, significant relation-ships from the past or present or the begin-ning of a new one.

perhaps you have had a shift from being anemployee to becoming an entrepreneur orhave decided to go back to school inmidlife. Write down all of the blessings inyour journal.

When you go back to that journal entry sixmonths or a year from now, you will be ableto see how much more abundant your lifehas become. your journal will become yourmap, helping you to see all of the great thingsthat already are a part of your life.

this exercise enables you to become aninquisitive witness of your life. it is areminder that you are being blessed no mat-ter what day of the year it is or what circum-stances are occurring in your life.

after you have acknowledged the abundantblessings that have already manifested inyour life, it is supremely helpful to take amoment to sit in gratitude.

What does this mean? if you are familiarwith meditation, you already know that thehuman body, brain and soul need time tojust be. this allows you to find your centerand your balance.

taking a moment of gratitude is similar tomeditation but instead of having the goal ofclearing your mind to find peace in the still-ness of being, a moment of gratitude takesyou on the path of finding peace in the joy ofgiving thanks.

LIFE COACHING & PURPOSE

thank you are two of the most powerful words we can use. by having amoment of gratitude we are giving positive energy back to the universe. We aredirecting positive energy, our energy of gratitude, toward individuals for whomwe are thankful.

this is the best thank you card you can send to the universe. you have takenthe time to give thanks, and you will experience a great sense of peace, love andjoy after your moment of gratitude.

you create the reality of your life. the minute you send out a positive intentionof thank you, the universe hears you and returns more to be thankful for.that’s how the law of attraction works. When you give thanks you are vibrat-ing at a much higher energy field, and by doing this you attract more positivethings to yourself.

While the steps above may seem like work, the resulting celebration is wellworth the investment of time and energy. your moment of reflection andmoment of gratitude have led you to a unique, joyful celebration to cherish foryour self. the best part of this celebration is that it can occur any place and atany time.

celebrations of self are extremely powerful. you are giving thanks to the oneperson you may neglect the most—and that person is you.

can you envision the perfectcelebration of self? perhapsit’s a weekend retreat, a dayat the spa or even a new pairof shoes. celebrations of selfdon’t require an exotic loca-tion or a material gift. someof the best celebrations ofself don’t require any moneyat all.

great examples involve pam-pering—taking a bubblebath, taking a day off ofwork, gardening or discover-

ing a new hobby that gives you a sense of accomplishment. the little things wedo to celebrate ourselves often lead to the biggest rewards.

celebrations come in all shapes and sizes. We have all enjoyed a great birthdayparty or a reception at a wedding. When we think of celebrations we think oflarge groups of people, extreme festivities, gifts and frolic. We tend to neglectthe celebration of self, which is one of the most important things you can celebrate. take time to celebrate today—your mind, body and soul will thank you!
