GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

INFOMAP’SESSENTIAL SOUTH AFRICA

COMPANION GUIDE

Dear User,

This free travel guide is intended as a support for our Essential South Africa GuideMap digital (PDF) and physical maps. We have tried to include information which we, during our own travels, have found to be important. This guide contains brief introductory texts and contact numbers for the information found on the roadmap side of our SA Guidemap. This includes top locations for activities such as fishing, surfing, climbing, hiking, biking, kite surfing, scuba diving and ziplining. It also contains details for tourism offices, weekend getaways, national parks, great reserves, highlighted services (showing fuel, banks, fitment centres and shops), points of interest and a whole lot more. For added convenience we have listed the private hospitals shown on the map, with address and contact details for each. Combined with the road and travel information for our featured top six national parks (Kruger, Addo, Table Mountain, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, Augrabies and Pilanesberg), we hope to make this product as relevant and useful a resource for both local and foreign travellers as possible.

Feedback, suggestions or travel reports relating to the map and guidebook are welcome! We also aim to update and expand this guide as regularly as possible. So, before planning your next trip visit our website to see if there is a more current version.

Happy travels,

> Check the visa requirements for entry to South Africa! There have been a number of changes introduced recently regarding the requirements for travelling (across borders) with children.

> All driver’s licences are accepted in South Africa, however they must be valid, have a photograph and signature of the owner, and either be in English or authenticated in English. Some car hire companies may require an international license also. Enquire before hiring a vehicle.

> The local currency is South African Rand (ZAR). Of late the value of the Rand has been sliding against all major foreign curren-cies making South Africe a very affordable, good value for money destination for foreign tourists. For South Africans this means that local tourism is becoming more popular, as many South African choose to explore their own country instead of holidaying overseas.

> South Africa has a huge range of geographically / environmentally distinct regions, and is one of the major adventure destina-tions in the world. From safaris to surfing, hiking to biking, shark diving, fishing, kite-surfing, scuba diving, 4x4ing and whole lot more, the country has a highly developed, world class-tourism industry. This is also true of the high quality and range of accom-modation and culinary options on offer in well-developed or touristed areas.

> Being aware of ones surrounding and properly informed as to local contexts is the best form of security one can take - and this is particularly true in South Africa. Despite having a high crime rate, visitors must understand that most of this crime happens in economically impoverished areas - the targets of this crime being mostly the poor. This reality means that in the more touristed areas crime is not nearly of the same scale as in the townships. Despite this, it always helps to be informed so here are a few tips to help visitors stay crime-free: know where you’re going, don’t walk around at night, don’t flash your valuables, don’t leave valuables visible in the car and lock your car doors. The vast majority of South Africans are warm, open, friendly, caring people, regardless of their ethnicity, culture, race or economic situation, who welcome visitors.

PORT ST JOHNS FISHINGA fantastic fishing spot. Ocean and river fish are regularly caught such as Grunter, Shad, Kingfish, Kob, Garrick, Musselcracker and Rainbow Trout. When the sardine run is on (June-July) expect billions of these fish - the waters literally move with fish.

PORT ST JOHNS SARDINE RUNThe sardine run is natural phenomenon in which billions of sardine migrate along the coast of South Africa, sometimes in groups a few kilometers long. They can be caught from the shore with nets, or try diving with them while a feeding frenzy of sharks, game fish and birds gorge themselves.

Numerous operators offer the chance to get in the water with the sardine run - but timing is essential as the arrival of the sardines is not a predictable event.

NIEU-BETHESDA OWL HOUSEHome of artist Helen Martins during the middle 1900’s, the Owl House in many ways put this tiny, quiet Karoo village on the map. See the cement and glass statues of owls, camels and human figures, many of whom face east. During her life, Martins largely removed herself from the outside world. She hired local labourer / artist Koos Malgas to ‘be her hands’ and create statues of her imagination. While little acknowledged, the significance of this cross-ra-cial/class ‘collaboration’ was very unsual during this period.

During the mid 1800’s, amidst great social change and tension, a young Xhosa girl Nonquawuse claimed to have had a vision in a river pool, in which white settlers would be thrown into the sea if the Xhosa killed all their cattle. With an economy and culture based on cattle, the subsequent cattle-killing shows the depths to which Xhosa society was under strain at the time. The Great Cattle Killing is an epic and tragic event in SA history as the resulting famine broke the once powerful Xhosa nation, who lost much of their wealth, power and independence, largely forcing them to become wage labourers in the colonial economy.

The pools are located along the Gxara River, near the coast. Its is a walk from Kei Mouth and tours are available. Ask for details in Kei Mouth.

QUNU NELSON MANDELA BURIAL SITESouth African icon Nelson Mandela died on 15 Decem-ber 2013 and was buried in his family’s land in Qunu, the village in which he spent much of his youth. A typical Transkei village with colourful (often green, pink or mud-brown) huts, communal land tenure, dongas and grazing cattle, the village itself is still fairly poor. This fact alone makes Mandelas achievements all the more remarkable. While not open to the public his grave can be seen from a distance, Visit the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre. As a site of both natural and cultural heritage - consisting of endemic fauna (such as the bearded vulture) and over 30 000 rock paintings - this makes the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park the only mixed World Heritage site in the country. With a host of outdoor activities and things to see, the Park is one of the major tourism areas in South Africa for both local and foreign visitors. ISANDLWANA POINT OF INTERESTA mountain northwest of Durban, and the site of an epic battle between the Zulu impis of Cetshwayo and the coloni-al forces under Lord Chelmsford, in which the 20000 strong Zulu army defeated around 2000 colonial soldiers. What is significant is that this was the first major battle between the two parties and the fact that while the British fought with state-of-the-art modern weapons, the Zulu used (by and large) their traditional short stabbing spears and cow-hide shields. Despite winning the battle, the Zulu were to lose in their efforts against a British invasion of their territory, as the Isandlwana defeat created a sense of determination and unity amongst the British authorities to overwhelm and destroy the Zulu kingdom. Visit the site with a guide if pos-sible, as they can make the history come alive. Fugitives Drift offer tours.

KOSI BAY SCUBAKosi Bay lies virtually on the border of Mozambique and is an estuary system of four connected lakes. The area itself is very beautiful and very isolated. Home of the Tsonga people, clear waters, mangroves, marsh, palms and fig forests and many bird species, Kosi Bay attracts the ad-venturous..

Kosi Bay is, among other things, a beautiful diving para-dise. With a rural, remote and rustic feel and wild white sandy beaches, this subtropical corner of South Africa is a fairly unexplored part of the Isimangaliso Park. Dive all year round. Pristine reefs and home to turtles, rays, potato bass and sometimes whale sharks. A real adventure!

MAJUBA HILLThe site of a major battle during the Anglo-Boer war re-sulting in a British defeat. On the morning of 27 Feb 1881, a British commander took possession of Majuba Hill in an effort to gain high ground over the Boer general Nicolas Smit. The Boers marksmenship, bravery and experiential knowledge, as well as some bad decisions by the British, led to this humiliating defeat.

MARGATE SARDINE RUNOnce an annual event in which billions of sardines migrate along the coast of SA, it would seem that various natural and manmade factors have effected ‘the largest shoal on earth’. Now some years can go by without the sardines arrival. Despite this, the sardine run is one of the highlights on the KZN calendar and a spectacle worth seeing - from the shoreline or diving beneath the waves. Watch as sharks, rays, dolphins and large gamefish gorge them-selves. Hand thrown nets are used by people on the shore or in the shallows to catch these fish by the hundreds of thousands. Keep a look out for news of the Sardine Run around May to late July as it moves along the Wild Coast - KZN. Margate has always been a good place to see this.

MARGATE FISHINGSome great spots to catch fish like shad, kob, garrick and bream. These include Bird Rock, Ley Rocks, Margate Pier and Lucien Point. For shad fishing along the KZN coast sardines work very well. Remember to use a wire trace as they have sharp teeth and can cut through the line. Thread the hook and trace through the sardine so that it ‘swims’ through the water. Shad (or Elf) give a good fight.

MARGATE SCUBAMargate is the point of departure for dives to Protea Banks, a 6km long reef located around 7km offshore, well known for its diving around the areas of northern and southern pinnacles. The reef is famous for its shark dives - bull (zambezi) and tiger sharks especially - but it also offers beautiful reef fish, impressive gamefish, caves, hammer-heads and sometimes whales too. A top diving destination!

WATERFALL BOVEN BIKINGDesigned by mountain biking trail maker, Glenn Harrison, the trails at Tranquilitas Farm offer a fantastic selection of rides for all - but perhaps especially the more experienced rider. A mix of single-track, hiking trails and gravel, the trails take riders up, down and past steep tracks, forests, viewpoints, bridges and dropoffs in some pretty fast and well-designed routes. Not as full as many well known bike parks.

SUDWALA CAVESThought to be around 30km in length, of which only a frac-tion is accessible, the Sudwala caves are some of the old-est caves in the world. They were also the scene of various battles and were used as a refuge and ‘fortress’ by some Swazi leaders in times of conflict. Legend has it that Paul Kruger hid vast wealth somewhere in the caves. Various tours are offered of the cave complex by very knowledgea-ble, professional guides.

JOHANNESBURG TOURISMKnown for being home to the largest urban man-made forest on earth, Johannesburg is also the largest city in the world not located on a water source. These unusual facts result from, or are rooted in, the very history and identity of the city - being its vast mineral wealth. Known as the ‘City of Gold’ Johannesburg was founded in 1886 during the gold rush. In many respects this founding ‘urge for wealth’, and the fast-paced lifestyle associated with entrepreneurship, ambition and economic success has moulded and stayed with the city, as it is now the econom-ic, social and cultural heart of South Africa. With so much activity attracting people from all over South Africa, Africa and Internationally, ‘Joburg’ is a truly African, multi-cultural city where culture, socialising, history, nightlife, activities, wining, dining and outdoor adventures all come together. Its also a city where extreme wealth exists alongside ex-treme poverty, and where urban renewal and urban decay occur simultaneously within a city constantly changing and shaping its identity. See the Maboneng district and various areas in the inner city, where creativity and life have moved into once badly-neglected areas of the city. A visit to Sowe-to is a must! With over a million inhabitants Soweto (from South Western Townships) is divided into various parts with more wealthy, middle class and working class areas. Famous residents (past or present) of this world famous township include Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Lucas Radebe and Trevor Noah. Otherwise, with its large inter-national airport, proximity to regional safari highlights such as the Kruger and Pilanesberg, and other Southern African nations such as Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland.

JOHANNESBURG FESTIVALSAs the social and cultural hub of South Africa, Johan-nesburg has a thriving events calendar, although not everything is a festival, nor are the events annual. The music scene for example plays host to different local and international artists throughout the year, while there are many culinary events (markets, festivals, expo’s or ‘shows’) which are hosted in a myriad of different places. More established festivals include the annual Jazz Festival (Sep-tember), the Chinese New Year (February) and the Art Fair (April). For more information see: www.inyourpocket.com

MAKAPANSGAT CAVESMakapansgat, northeast of Makopane, is a World Herit-age SIte. A series of dolomite limestone caves with high scientific significance for their paleontological excavations, these caves are separated into various distinct caves, with distinct locations. Our early ancestor - the ‘ape man’ (Aus-talopithicus Africanus) - is one of the fascinating finds here. The Cave of Hearts preserves an almost complete record of human occupation from Early Stone Age times through the Middle and late Stone Age up to the Iron Age. Maka-pansgat is also famous for the siege by a Boer Commando on local Langa and Kekana people who had taken refuge in the caves, in which thousands of people died of starva-tion. WATERBERG UNESCO BIOSPHEREThe Waterberg UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is almost the same size as the Kruger, with a wealth of wildlife, wilder-ness and beautiful scenery. Still in its infancy, the tourism and conservation value of this relatively newly proclaimed area is growing. With SANParks Marakele NP to the west, the biosphere is made up of private land, state land, private reserves, towns, villages and other areas. Some of the pri-vate reserves are very large and offer great safari destina-tions - some with the big 5. It is hoped that the Waterberg area will become a more developed tourist epicentre in the future as it is only a few hours from JHB. The village of Vaalwater is the entry point to the biosphere, although this too needs to be developed more. Some of the highlights include the Marakele NP, Welgevonden Game Reserve, Mabalingwe Nature Reserve, Waterberg Wilderness Re-serve and the Doorndraai Nature Reserve.

ZION CITY MORIA POINT OF INTEREST25 Km east of Polokwane lies the town of Moria - the seat of the Zion Christian Church. Twice each year - at Easter and in September - large multitudes congregate here. During Easter it is between that 5 - 10 million believers sometimes congregate to worship. While difficult to con-firm, if these numbers are true this makes the gatherings here some of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Access to non-church members during these periods is generally not permitted. Tourists should avoid the area as well as the N1 and R 101 from Johannesburg during these events as the roads are congested with countless, buses, taxis and motor cars..
