SURVEYING YOUR FEMALE STUDENTS
Women in Sport has been working in partnership with a number of Colleges across England to identify best practice for increasing female students’ participation in sport and physical activity. As part of the partnership, finding out from the girls what they feel about sport and physical activity is important when shaping the offer available to them. Listening to your students and giving them the opportunity to be involved in the decision making
process can help with this and most importantly ensure that they make the decision to take part.
To help make this happen, we have put together a short survey for your students to complete. The steps below will help you understand what we can do with the results of the survey.
The steps that follow will help you understand what we can do with the results of the survey.
Finding out their thoughts about sport and physical activity
3
FIND OUT WHAT THEY THINK
STEP 1
• It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete the survey with
the majority of the questions being tick box answers.
• Decide whether you want to target a particular cohort of girls or
the whole college. If you work with a targeted group of girls, for
example hair and beauty students, you will gain specific insight on
a particular group that you are trying to target.
• You do not need any specific software packages, you just need
access to the internet to enable your pupils to complete it through
Survey Monkey.
• The questions are designed to give you a clearer idea on what the
girls enjoy about sport, what they would like to see improve and
how confident they feel about themselves.
4
PRESENTING AND USING THE INSIGHT
STEP 2
•Once you have analysed the results, make sure that you feedback
the key findings to the girls along with what you plan to do
with findings.
•The results can be used as evidence to support funding
applications and cases for support, as well as providing
evidence internally for the support needed for sport and
physical activity provision.
5
FROM DISCUSSION TO GETTING THE GIRLS MORE ACTIVE
STEP 3
• Make sure the girls know why they are taking part in the survey
and ensure that they find out what the responses showed. If the
girls see you take action on their suggestions, the likelihood of
them thinking about engaging in sport is much higher.
• Where possible, involve the girls in shaping the offer moving
forward. Can you create a girls voice for sport at the college?
The girls themselves are a good method of marketing and
promoting the opportunities available and allowing them to
have a say in this will aid you in getting more girls active.
We want your opinion and ideas! Answer the following questions to let us know how you think sports and physical activity at your college can be improved.
