There’s so much to say, so much to do and so little time... It’s a cliché, but we all know the feeling, so thanks for taking the time to read our words!

Here’s a look back at November, which was Diabetes Month, with events culminating on the 14th with World Diabetes Day. We took every opportunity to raise awareness about the difference between type 2 diabetes and the diabetes that our children suffer from, which is type 1. There is still a great deal of work to be done to counter prejudice and debunk myths. We also want to highlight the courage of our children, our teens and you, dear parents! With the all-too familiar daily challenges we have to face, it’s nice to take the opportunity to give each other a pat on the back and remind ourselves—AND REMIND THEM—how much love there is behind every little nudge, every single “Have you tested your blood sugar?” “What do you mean, you forgot?” “Did you take a bolus? ” and “I’m not looking forward to your next glycated hemoglobin!!!

Allow me to share a personal reflection here. I know that even in this day and age there are still countries where children don’t have access to insulin every day, and can’t get the right food to try and get the slightest handle on their diabetes. And in those countries where bombs fall on neighbourhoods, on homes, even when by some miracle, nobody is injured, how do people store insulin and food? I’m thinking about those parents and those children. And I remember the day I stopped crying while I injected my little girl, almost one year after her diagnosis, that day that I realized how lucky I was. I had the good fortune and the ability to inject my 22-month-old baby with life! Thanks for indulging me this personal aside. It’s probably because as I write these words, it’s been 35 years to the day since my darling Alex was diagnosed with T1D.

There’s still a great deal to do, of course, but we are lucky to be able to do it. And with your help, Fred can get things done!

On November 14, World Diabetes Day, we held the annual Fred raffle surrounded by parents and friends.

For the first time this year, we broadcast the draw live in real time on the Fred Facebook page.

The Chair of the Board of Camp Carowanis, Dr. Robert Barnes, was given the happy task of dis-tributing prizes at the event of November 21.

Winners: Grand prize: Patrick Hannus 2nd prize: Pierre-Jules Audet 3rd prize: Luc Frédérick Guénette 3th prize: Linda Beaudoin

Thanks to the many people who bought tickets, as well as the generosity and hard work of friends and parents who sold tickets, we raised more than $52,400 to be used for direct services to young campers at Carowanis. I would like to give a special shout-out to our amazing volunteers, who devoted time over several weekends in a number of WalMart stores, and to André Gauthier and Pierrette Lauzon, members of the U-1 District Lions Club.

Our biggest sellers: Annie Huchette with 150 BOOKLETS and Marcel Proulx with 100 BOOKLETS. THANK YOU!

Also, a great many thanks to Richard Vincent from Groupe Park Avenue. We have been fortunate to count on the support of this very generous man and his team for many years now, in the form of car transportation for our public events as well as the “Hole in one” prize for our annual Golf and Cycling Classic.

Fred has fantastic friends!

WORLD DIABETES DAY & ANNUAL RAFFLE GALA!

The 15th annual golf and cycling classic was held on August 30 at the Vallée du Richelieu Golf Club. Mother Nature treated more than 200 golfers and cyclists to a beautiful day on an outstanding course. Thanks to these golfers and cyclists, enthusiastic and generous friends of Fred, we netted the amazing sum of $282,000!

Our fabulous organizing committee—formed by members of the Fred executive—is the driving force behind the event’s huge success. It’s a challenge they have risen to every year for more than 10 years, working hard to drum up support from friends, colleagues and partners, keeping the well-being of our diabetic children close to their hearts.

Our biggest innovation for 2016 was the Benjamin pro-gram: a 5-night/6-day trip for kids between the ages of 7 to 9. This program was designed to give younger children a chance to experience camp without being separated from their families for too long. In response to the enthusiastic response from families, we had to open a second Benjamin session to accommodate all the campers who signed up. A total of 34 Benjamins became part of the big Carowanis family. Under the guidance of our team of top-notch counselors, these young campers discovered the magic of the camp—obs-tacle course, zipline, a night in a tent fort, and many hours on the beach—at their own pace. The new program was a great success, and we hope to see these young campers back next year.

LEADER PROGRAM

Also available is the Leader Program, a camp counse-lor apprentice program that draws on the expertise and energy of young people who have spent a few summers at the camp and are familiar with the traditions. About a dozen dynamic teens take part in this six-week pro-gram certified by the Association des camps du Québec to learn the basics of the camp counselor role and how to manage the diabetes aspect of Camp Carowanis. It’s more than just training. It’s an enriching group expe-rience that calls for solidarity, tolerance and leadership!

The summer of 2016 was filled with adventure, chal-lenges and fun for our group of 11 intrepid leaders. Guided by their head leader Axel, they learned about teamwork and helping each other, and established life-long friendships. With their special project to overhaul Le Rocher, this year’s leaders have marked the history of Camp Carowanis. As of 2017, campers will enjoy sleeping under the stars at this new site.

For more than 25 summers now, Camp Carowanis has been rolling out the red carpet to recently-diagnosed diabetic children under 8 and their families for our Family Weekend. Children will be supervised by camp staff during their stay so that adults can participate in discussions on various topics with experts and young diabetic adults.

It’s a time for these families to feel the relief and com-fort of knowing that they are no longer alone. For the kids, it’s the perfect place to meet others like them and discover the magic of Camp Carowanis at their own pace. This year we welcomed 29 families, for a total of 96 par-ticipants during the weekend of August 19 to 21, 2016.

Square dancing, singing and storytelling around the campfire, workshops and discussions on diabetes, and lots of family fun!

Thank you to the members of the organizing committee, Dr. Maria Buithieu, Mrs. Catherine Chagnon, Mr. Robert Langlois and Mrs. Johanna Griffith, who dedicate time and energy to making this program a huge success year after year.

I started training enthusiastically, and the first week went swimmingly. Then I tore a muscle and had to stop working out for 3 weeks. After this setback, I started running again, carefully, and my leg responded well. I was back in the saddle!

My training was going well, as were my fundraising efforts, so I increased my objective once again. Then I noticed that people I didn’t know were contributing and sending me en-couraging messages. I quickly figured out that my daughter Brigitte and my son Dominic, Naïlo’s father, had decided to get involved and join forces with me. I was deeply touched by their involvement and proud of their solidarity. No longer alone in this adventure, I felt ready to step up my efforts. I managed to stay the course with my training plan, although I sometimes had to take long hot baths to recover. With the $8,000 target reached, I decided to go for $10,000.

The day of April 24 was chilly. We had raised our $10,000 objective. I felt like I could fly. My family came to support me. My grandson Naïlo gave me a big encouraging hug be-fore the race. I crossed my fingers to finish with a time of about 2:30. And I was off!

The first 10 kilometres went fairly well. At kilometre 14 my right leg started to feel numb. The wind picked up. My pace slowed. At kilometre 17 there was no use hoping; I knew I was going to take longer than 2:30. My right leg was totally numb and I felt a strong pain in my right knee. I started to limp. Coming out of a curve I spotted my whole family chee-ring me on. Cousins Naïlo and Gabriel couldn’t resist the temptation to start running by my side. It was encouraging, but I still had 4K to go. The race officials told the kids to move off the track, which then branched off away from the noisy crowd. I was all alone with my leg, which was telling me to slow down and give it a break.

It all started when I was sitting comfortably in front of my computer. A little click notified me that I had a new email message, asking me to support the Scotiabank Charity Challenge for the Diabetic Children’s Foundation/FRED. My ten-year-old grandson Naïlo has had type 1 diabetes since the age of three. He’s a wonderful, ever- smiling child who’s intelligent enough to both endure and understand his diabetes. I admire and love him, so for me it was natural to want to give.

But this time it was different. I was invited to sign up for a half-marathon and raise funds for the Diabetic Children’s Foundation (Fondation ressources pour les enfants diabé-tiques – FRED). I let my heart guide me and I signed up, giving myself the objective to raise one thousand dollars. There were only 13 weeks left before the April 24 race at Jean Drapeau Park. 13 weeks to raise money for a good cause, get back in shape (at the age of 70 it takes a bit longer), and run 21 km.

I made a list of my closest friends and sent out my first solicitation email. Much to my surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive! Spurred by the generosity of my friends and family, I increased my objective to $5,000.

I reached the 19K mark and again saw the smiling faces of Naïlo and Gabriel, who were absolutely determined to run with me. I was treated to every type of compliment and encouragement. 2 more kilometres to go. My right leg had gone completely stiff and was no longer mine to control. I picked up the pace ever so slightly as I neared the final kilometre. My grandsons were a great source of comfort, spurring me on to the finish. With them by my side, I knew I would make it to the end. Nothing could stop me.

Something clicked as I saw the marker for kilometre 20. Naïlo asked me, “What are you doing, grandpa?” I answe-red, “Let’s run to the finish line as fast as we can.” I gathered what was left of my strength, and bolted. I couldn’t feel my leg anymore, but it was magnificent. I could see the crowd at the finish line only 500 metres away. Gabriel, Naïlo and I started sprinting. We chatted away as we ran. I felt eupho-ric. My eyes filled with tears. My grandsons held back so I could cross the finish line before them. I turned around and they jumped into my arms. My spouse Louise, my children and my grandchildren were there waiting. I hobbled over to them to savour a moment that I will never forget.

Good news! I placed fifth in my age group with a time of 2 hours and 38 minutes. I was feeling pretty good about myself, and maybe a little bit smug... until I was informed that there were 5 of us in the 70+ age group. I have ne-ver been so proud to place last, because the funds I raised will help the Foundation and diabetic children. I met my objectives, one step at a time!

This year a number of parents drummed up support through their children’s schools to raise funds for Fred as part of the Halloween Boxes Campaign.

Thanks to you, 42 boards of governors and daycares agreed to not only use Fred donation boxes, but also to raise awareness among students and parents about the daily challenges that their diabetic friends must face. It’s a win-win!!! Thanks to the school administrators and teachers for their enthusiasm and motivation to demys-tify T1D. Thanks to our colleagues and friends, Diane, André and François, for giving so much of their time. It really paid off! The results speak for themselves. The campaign raised $32,501.24!

We were delighted to play host to a team of eight amazing volunteers from Pharmascience, who chose to give time and energy to Fred as part of the Morris Goodman Community Partnership Day in September. We took advantage of this generous helping hand to make headway with projects that often end up on the back-burner due to lack of time or resources. The entire team extends its appreciation to Francine Bernier and her colleagues for this wonderful opportunity. We have been fortunate to count Francine and Pharmascience among our generous supporters for many years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
