2 Byron Community College Term 2 2017

This year we welcomed Kate Mountford as the new Foundation Skills Tutor at the College. Kate has recently moved to the area after spending some time in Nepal assisting in the building of schools.

The Foundation Skills units are integrated into our Certificate III and IV courses providing valuable support for students in areas such as literacy, numeracy, communication and information technology. In 2006 the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducted the Adult Literacy and Life Skills survey. The results revealed that 46% of Australians aged 15 to 74 years did not have the literacy skills needed to meet the complex demands of everyday life and work. For example, rapid developments in information technology leave many people feeling overwhelmed and left behind. It is important for our students to graduate with the confidence and ability to use the required IT resources relevant to their industry and life.

Many students coming to adult education have a great capacity to learn and contribute to society in meaningful ways. There may be barriers however, that make it challenging to meet the evolving expectations of the formal education system and employment sector. Foundation Skills classes aim to close the gap by supporting students through their learning endeavours by accommodating their individual needs. Kate believes that a lot of people have been held back from pursuing further studies in their youth due to a rigid education system, which can sometimes limit our own self belief. This is why her passion is to help people achieve their goals by realising their own potential.

Tutor StoryKate Mountford

Foundation skill sets are delivered in group class settings as well as individual tuition for more specific needs. The Visual Arts students were recently taught how to set up a Pinterest account in order to create an online portfolio and the Certificate III Permaculture classes are taught skills for delivering presentations to groups and writing reports.

Kate has strong experience teaching literacy and numeracy, having worked in the field since 2009. She is passionate about creating a responsive, holistic and empowering learning environment for students with a diverse range of Literacy and Numeracy issues.“I was drawn to teaching literacy because of an awareness of the power of written language to either entrench, disadvantage or to empower people to create expanded horizons for themselves. Throughout my 13 years’ teaching adults, especially in the field of literacy, I have witnessed and been deeply moved by the transformative power of education.”

Kate relocated from Brisbane and had originally been considering the move to Byron Bay to study Permaculture with the College. The community of Byron Shire echoes her core values and interests and she is happy to be out of the city and be living closer to the natural environment. She shares a deep resonance with the holistic approach of the Byron Community College and is dedicated to working to empower the College’s students to achieve their dreams by preparing them to enter into the workforce with the skills they require to succeed.

We are very happy to have Kate join us and welcome her to the College team.

After working for many years in an industry I was not fully aligned with, I was led to discover my passion for the early development of children, specifically from 0 - 7years of age. I had been considering returning to school to study for a while, however I had been put off from the fees that courses attracted, making me feel as though it would not be possible to embark on my educational journey. I decided to call the Byron Community College and they recommended the Introduction to Early Childhood Education and Care course. After looking into what the course offered and what I could achieve with a Certificate III in this industry, I knew I wanted to do it. I spoke again to the College and found that I could qualify for the Smart and Skilled reduced payment for the course which completely sold me, and I felt I was really on the right path. I was so excited for my first day of school and immediately clicked with the other like-minded students. Our tutor, Jud, was also very interesting and offered many great stories and experiences for us to really get back into the playful minds of children.

To see how far the Early Education industry has come with respect to sustainability and emotional development is really inspiring. I am now completing the second half of the course and started my work placement at Little Shearwater which is one of my favourite places to be. Since studying at the College, I have found the staff to be helpful and supportive and Jud as a tutor to be incredibly informative, creative and humorous which makes the course fun and educational. I am really excited to complete this certification and see what comes next.

It’s been a long road for me in finding the right permaculture studies. I enjoyed the broad range of skill sets taught from botany to business management to community engagement. These were gaps I had in my existing skill-sets as a permaculture professional. My peers were lateral thinkers and passionate.

Mark was the right tutor for me. His invaluable wisdom from his long working career, vision of where permaculture needs to go and flexibility with students circumstances meant I was able to get the most from the course despite my circumstances moving to the area last year.

During the course the framework of required activities and evidence encouraged and complimented my community involvement. The course is based on practical principles, directly applicable to professional conduct. The qualification gives me the first impression legitimacy with industry professionals in the design and construction industry, where there is great potential for emerging permaculture professionals to be involved in large impact projects Australia wide. Coming from the architecture industry in Sydney as a

specialist consultant, I can now demonstrate the benefits and positive cultural impact of moving the ethics and principals of permaculture into the mainstream. I am now starting my own business - a local food sovereignty project based on the suburban cultural integration of market garden farming. I am also now teaching the design & documentation module of the course, being asked back this year due to my professional background and completion of the course.

I have been producing custom-made mosaic works for local and interstate clients for the past ten years. I have always worked as an artist in a variety of media, including silver, stone, glass, fabric, and ceramics and have come to feel a real sense of ‘home-coming’ about creating mosaics. I find the combination of design and the practical, physical creation of a work very fulfilling.

I love the process of creating a new mosaic. Working with the client, designing, digging into their ideas and their visions, trying together to find that visual expression of their dream. It is a fulfilling process, this collaboration, especially seeing much of the following weeks or months are spent by myself in my studio or on site, translating that vision into something tangible.

As qualified Holistic Psychotherapists Margaret and Carolyn are trained in counselling methods which are experiential, practical and focused in the here and now. They both have successful private practices in Port Macquarie and Byron Shire, and have taught or tutored counselling students at diploma and degree Levels. Both have experience facilitating groups whose focus is gaining self-awareness. The content for the Accidental Counsellor workshop was developed by Margaret to address situations where frontline workers are expected, as part of their job, to manage clients in heightened emotional states. On top of the demands of their work, being confronted with distressed people can be challenging. We are very fortunate to have the benefit of Margaret’s experience successfully running the workshop in Port Macquarie. She and Carolyn will co-facilitate this very practical session here in Byron Shire, offering opportunity to learn and practice helpful techniques in a safe and supportive environment.
