A pathway choice for students entering Year 11 should be recognised as a two year proposition through until the end of Year 12. In choosing the correctpathway it is imperativethat the following is takeninto account, as it relates tothe individual student;

• Enhancement andprotection of a student’swell-being.

• Skills and abilities.• Interests, passions and

dislikes.• Future aspirations.• Work ethic.• Level of commitment

required.• Attainment of The Western

Australian Certificate ofEducation (WACE).

CHOOSING A VIABLE PATH TO THE FUTURE

The pathways to university entry continue to evolve. The 2018 Mitchell report highlighted that over 60% of students were entering university without an ATAR score. It is the new entry method preferred by students across the nation.

The Altitude Pathway at Mater Dei College encompasses three overlapping directions for university entry:

1. Portfolio / Audition Entry2. Diploma Level Entry3. Certificate IV Entry

Of the six courses students are required to undertake in Year 11 and 12, students can study between 0 to 3 ATAR courses and must successfully complete a Certificate ll or higher course. All universities offer a variety of Alternative Entry Pathways which should be investigated according to the specialist field.

UNIPREP SCHOOLSUniPrep Schools is a new pathway program offered to Mater Dei Students. The program is based on ECU’s University Preparation program, UniPrep, which has provided successful pathways into university for many years.

Students interested in undertaking the UniPrep course should choose it as one of their six courses in Year 11, however it should be noted places will be limited.

What’s in the program?UniPrep Schools currently offers five units – two core units and three elective units to be completed over Year 11 and 12. To successfully complete the program, students will undertake both core units and be able to choose two further units from the elective unit options.

CORE UNITSAcademic Writing – focuses on the writing skills required for academic essays and reports. Learning Skills – exposes students to the learning skills required by tertiary students.

ELECTIVE UNITSScience – provides a philosophical and practical framework for undergraduate science students. ORHumanities – introduces key concepts and frameworks explored in humanities subjects.

OR

Mathematics – teaches mathematical concepts and techniques required for university.

The program will provide academic skills development, university experiences, and accessible pathways to tertiary study.

The program is designed to complement, not replace students’ current WACE and ATAR academic endeavours, while providing authentic experiences of university. School students who successfully complete the UniPrep Schools program and achieve their WACE certificate will receive a notional ATAR of 70. This will provide them with entry into a number of ECU or university courses.
