The Skills Show, the nation’s largest skills and careers event, is inviting Competition Organising Partners, further education institutions, colleges and training organisations from across the country to be part of Showcase.

SHOWCASE: YOUR CHANCE TO INSPIRE

Taking place on five stages throughout the show, Showcase is your opportunity to demonstrate excellence in your chosen skill. You will present the exceptional talents of students, trainees and apprentices, as well as promoting excellence in a wide range of vocational skills.

Showcase is a dynamic demonstration of a skill at its highest standard, carried out by students and experts to engage and inspire visitors.

Showcase will surprise and inspire visitors through a highly engaging range of demonstrations. As a focal point of the event, Showcase will demonstrate to up to 75,000 visitors how they can learn more about a particular skill, the courses on offer and the career paths available to them.

NEW fOR 2015The Showcase stages will be sector specific and linked to each of the five competition sectors. Find a Future is looking for Showcase providers who will design sector specific content and showcase the best of vocational education training and beyond.

Take ownership of an individual sector stage and demonstrate the very best in that sector.

Competition Organising Partners need to work in partnership with colleges or training providers to deliver the Showcase offer. This will ensure the visitor sees the very best of further education on the Showcase stages.

Showcase will help students and learners to:

• Gain valuable experience of a real life working environment.

• Enhance their interpersonal skills including communication, problem solving, project planning and teamwork. This provides evidence for assessment and evaluation.

• Benchmark their performances against national standards.

• Gain a work experience certificate from Find a Future.

Find a Future will dedicate itself to providing technical and logistical support throughout the project and to help you run the activity.

Find a Future will also promote your Showcase through The Skills Show marketing channels, including the event guide and website.

Showcase will help to build awareness of your organisation pre, during and post-event. The Skills Show attracts 75,000 visitors over 3 days.

Showcase colleges and education institutes are offered financial assistance to cover expenses incurred. This depends on your organisation’s proximity to the NEC. All you need to do is submit your receipts and a form for approval.

Showcase will take place on purpose built stages throughout The Skills Show and will provide a platform to demonstrate sector excellence in particular skill areas.

WHAT dOES A SUCCESSfUL SHOWCASE LOOk LIkE?

• Make it interactive with Q&A and audience participation, which could be experiential or competitive. Interactivity is one of the most important elements of Showcase.

• Make each session last about 20 to 30 minutes. The sessions will be timetabled and repeated several times throughout the three days of the show.

• Develop bite-sized demonstrations which are easily brought into and out of the Showcase space, to ensure a quick turnaround.

• Demonstrate excellence in vocational education and promoting the ethos of competitions and the industry.

• Inspire visitors to seek further guidance from the show’s careers advice areas.

• 12 college students demonstrated their plastering skills by producing a lifelike 3D model of a train station local to their college.

• Students demonstrated how to achieve technical looks within creative hairdressing using materials to build frameworks and hair representing wind, fire, water and earth based on the title ‘The Elements’.

• As one of the UK’s fastest growing industries it was great to have Games Development students showing visitors how a game is made as the talented students demonstrated 3D models, games programming and more.

• Students competed against the clock at the Pit Stop Challenge to achieve the fastest wheel-change times.

• Students from both the retail and fashion industry worked together to demonstrate how designers plan and create visual merchandising displays, specifically looking at some of the key techniques used within the retail sector.

• Attend the show for the three live days of Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 November 2015.

• Deliver demonstrations of 20 to 30 minutes (twice a day) over the three live show days.

• Work in partnership with a college, Competition Organising Partners bringing a maximum of five students to deliver the demonstrations and talk about what is happening on the Showcase stage.

• Attend the training and familiarisation session on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 November.

•Use a friendly, informative and helpful manner, to boost visitors’ understanding of the skills shown in the competition through peer to peer information and advice. This is because learning from peers has been proven as the best way of engaging with visitors.

If you are interested in Showcasing a skill in one of the sectors please ensure you have completed your application form and returned this to [email protected] by 4pm Friday 05 June 2015.

All application forms and supporting material must be received by this time and adhere to operational plans included in the application form.

Successful applications will meet the requirements as outlined in ‘How we will select you’ (see page 13).

You will be informed of the outcome of your application during week commencing Monday 15 June 2015.

WHO CAN APPLY?Applications are open to FE organisations from anywhere in the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), including:

• FE colleges, specialist and tertiary colleges

• Private training providers

• School sixth forms

• Adult and community learning centres

• Community and youth groups

Applications are particularly encouraged from organisations working in partnership with Competition Organising Partners.

Showcase is designed to demonstrate the very best skills and talents on display within the Further Education sector. Therefore this opportunity is aimed at all Colleges and Independent Training Providers, ideally working closely with Competition Organisation Partners. This will ensure that the showcase is delivered by students who have just left education or are still in education.

• You may also involve previous award winners, from UK Competitions or elsewhere.

• Anyone taking part must be aged 16 or over.

• Those taking part should represent the diversity of your industry.

The Skills Show will support successful applications by reimbursing expenses for delivering your Showcase up to a maximum of £750 for organisations within the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire and £1,500 outside of those counties, per Showcase.

All receipts must be retained and submitted by 15 December 2015.
