“ Learn Jesus, love Jesus and live Jesus . . .”
A dear friend in the faith once shared with me her
practice of placing the holy cards of her beloved
departed ones into the pages of her cookbooks.
Puzzled by this, I asked why. She replied that she
used her cookbooks often, to try new recipes or
revisit family favorites. Finding the cards among
the pages served as a reminder to pray for her lost
loved ones. “It wouldn’t work putting them in my
Bible,” she added. “I don’t open that.”
At every Mass in our six parishes we recite the
On Mission prayer. Staff and council members
pray this at the start of each meeting. The words
we all pray include the plea to God to “. . . Help
us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus.”
By now the prayer is wellknown to us, but did
you ever notice the sequence of those words?
First, we pray to learn, then to love, then to live
Jesus. Did you ever wonder about that? Wouldn’t
the “love Jesus” part be at the end? After all, isn’t
that the most important thing to love Jesus?
A priest once challenged me that an authentic
love for Jesus must prompt a response on my
part. It compels an action, or a ‘living out’ of that
love. Think of Mother Teresa, now St. Teresa of
Kolkata. Her unquestioned love of Jesus was an
active one, lived in service to the poorest of the
poor. If we, like her have learned Jesus, and have
come to love Jesus, then it follows that we would
live Jesus. In fact, we couldn’t help but do so!
This Lent, we’re encouraging all to learn Jesus a
little better through a parish bible study on the
Gospel of Mark. We will host a weekly session
for those who want to meet and discuss. Classes
will be Tuesdays at St. Columbkille. We will also
have an online version, with reflection and study
questions for those who wish to stay home. The
bulletin will have the same questions for those
who don’t use a computer.
Scripture is the living Word of God. Divinely
inspired and coauthored by a human hand many
centuries ago, yet the reading and hearing of the
Word at your fingertips today is meant for you
now, personally, powerfully. As you participate in
our scripture study on Mark, try this: open to the
page and place your hands on the Bible. Pray to
the Holy Spirit to help you understand what the
Lord wants to tell you. Pray too, that God’s Word
may take deep root in you. And begin.

Next Steps in Selecting a New Name for our Parish
Thanks to all those who submitted suggestions for the name of our new parish. From the initial
list of 15, the list has been narrowed down to five. We are now asking for parishioners to vote on
their favorite name. Listed below are the five names in alphabetical order and the rationale behind
them:
    Name Rationale
 1. Jesus Light of Light Jesus is our light to lead us in a dark world
 2. Our Lady of Guadalupe Powerful title of Mary for conversion and for our times
 3. St. Brendan Patron of travelers who traveled across the Atlantic
 4. St. Christopher Patron of travelers; reflects the roads and trails in our area
 5. St. Isidore Patron saint of farmers and rural communities
Guidelines for voting:
Please select only one name, one vote per parish parishioner or parish family. Please include
your name (or family name), and an email address or street address on the submission form.
All votes must be received by March 1 to allow time for tallying before sending to the diocese.
Votes may be submitted in a number of ways: you can drop this in the collection basket, mail
the completed form below, (or in a separate note), or you can submit your choice online via
our parish website. This page can be found at grouping329.org/newname. Mailed submissions

PARISH ASSEMBLIES MARCH 8, 2020
As we move forward to merge our six into a single parish family in July 2020, our clergy, staff

Council will host two Parish Assemblies on Sunday, March 8:
Sunday, March 8: St. Columbkille at 1:00pm
Sunday, March 8: St. Alphonsus at 6:30pm
Among the topics will be finances, the merger meline, the new parish name, and also the
opportunity for quesons. Each assembly will be one hour with a power point presentaon
followed by Q & A. Please join us for one of the sessions to get your quesons answered
and hear correct informaon.

Please be aware that scammers are emailing and texng parishioners, claiming to be their
pastor and asking for gi2 cards. If you receive an email or text from one who claims to be
your priest, asking for gi2 cards or money: DO NOT RESPOND. Do not click on anything in the
email. Call the parish office immediately to report it. Anyone who has given money or gi2
cards in response to such a request should call the police. Your clergy will never make an
urgent request for money or gi2 cards via email or text. If you wonder whether a parish re-
quest for giving is legimate, call your parish office to ask.
