Not far from the Channel Islands, on the Normandy coastline at the tip of the Cotentin peninsula, the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin promises a taste of the good life.

The maritime history of Cherbourg goes back a long way, its vestiges include the amazing manmade harbour, Europe’s largest, and the former Transatlantic Maritime Terminal, the last remains of European Art Deco architecture from the 1930s. The building is now occupied by the Cité de la Mer, a museum that recounts the human venture into the ocean depths, and the Cruise-ship Terminal which is now a port of call for the world’s biggest liners.

Relive the legend!On 10th April 1912, the Titanic dropped anchor in Cherbourg, its final port of call on the Continent, before sailing to Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland. So it was actually from here that the giant cruise ship set sail for the Americas! This moving journey into the past continues at the Cité de la Mer in an exhibition entitled “Titanic, Return to Cherbourg”.

The city and port of Cherbourg, a strategic site during the Second World War!The deep-water harbour of Cherbourg played an important role in helping the Allies win back France after the Normandy landings on 6th June 1944. In just a few months, Cherbourg became the world’s largest port ever to be exploited for military purposes. Visit the Liberation Museum and the free “Cherbourg 1944” permanent exhibition at the Cité de la Mer, to retrace history and the story of the first port to be liberated.

It won the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. At the Cité de la Mer, you'll plunge into man’s adventure with the sea. Explore the planet’s last untouched territory with the Ocean of the Future, and embark on a submarine, the Redoutable. Relive the final hours of the Titanic and follow the Battle of Normandy.Admission: adult €19, child 5-17 years €12, free for children under 5 years (no access to the submarine for children under 5). Discount of €1.50 per person at the Cruise-ship Terminal and the Tourist Office. Opening times: open all year round 10am - 6pm, July and August 9.30am - 7pm.

THOMAS HENRY MUSEUM Le Quasar - Esplanade de la Laïcité

Normandy’s 3rd largest fine arts museum. It houses an outstanding collection of 400 paintings and sculptures dating from the 15th to the 20th century. Fra Angelico, Poussin, David… France’s 2nd largest collection of works by Jean-François Millet, after that of the Musée d’Orsay.Admission: Full rate €5, reduced rate €3, free for the under 26 and on Wednesdays. NAPOLEON STATUE Place Napoléon Erected in 1858, the statue of Napoleon the First has become a “totem” for the people of Cherbourg. His finger points toward the military port of Cherbourg, for which he pursued the construction work initiated by Louis XVI.

EMMANUEL LIAIS PARK Rue de l’Abbaye

This park is an oasis of greenery in the heart of the city, and home to a surprising collection of exotic plants including species brought over from South America and Asia. Admission to the park: free.The Natural History Museum is closed for maintenance work.

SAINTE-TRINITÉ BASILICA Place NapoléonResting on the ancient ramparts of the medieval town of Cherbourg, the Sainte-Trinité Basilica is one of the city’s oldest monuments. This Gothic building is a listed Historical Monument and home to multiple listed furnishings such as the bas-relief features of the nave.Admission: free. Opening times: open every day.

LIBERATION MUSEUM Montée des Résistants

The museum explores the role played by Cherbourg during the Second World War and highlights the daily lives of both soldiers and civilians.Admission: Full rate €4, reduced rate €2.50, free for the under 26 and on Wednesdays. RAVALET'S PARK AND CASTLE Avenue du Château des Ravalet

Discover this Renaissance palace built of blue schist and restored in the late 19th century by René de Tocqueville. Visit the bucolic grounds stretching across 18 hectares and criss-crossed with winding footpaths that lead to the French-style garden, the Mandala garden and the island meadow. Admission: free. Grounds opening times: open all year round.Castle opening times: open from Tuesday to Sunday in July and August 1.30pm to 6.30pm. Open at weekends in June and September 1.30pm to 6.30pm.

VOEU ABBEY Rue de l’AbbayeThis former abbey founded in 1145 by the granddaughter of William the Conqueror became a barracks and, later, a hospital. Among other vestiges, the site features the elevated remains of a 13th-century chapterhouse and a refectory. The abbatial dwelling becomes an exhibition room in summer.Admission: Free. Opening times: from Tuesday to Friday in June 9am - 12 noon / 1.30pm - 4.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 1.30pm - 6.30pm. From Tuesday to Sunday in July and August 1.30pm to 6.30pm.
