Time truly flies when good things happen and there is SO much to build on since Val Russell, Ayrshire Chamber’s CEO, wrote in the Spring Magazine ‘my spirits are lifted by the positivity I come across on a regular basis’.

There is no doubt that the Chamber’s Annual Dinner in March was another stunning success and thanks to everyone who contributed to breaking the 500 guests mark. The evening kicked off with a most impressive performance of movie theme music by Stewarton Academy, setting the up-lifting tone for more to come. Congratulations again to our two Business Excellence Award Winners – Brownings the Bakers and Southbeach Holdings Scotland Ltd who showed what Ayrshire businesses are made of – ambitions, achievements and accolades. Throughout the evening, so many guests commented to me that there was a great buzz this year. This culminated in the awesome performance by Largs Academy LA Soul, taking us onto another high, even getting some guests dancing (no names mentioned!), and receiving a standing ovation. Roll on the 2015 Annual Dinner!

The future of Prestwick airport continues high in our sights. Val and I attended a meeting with Transport Scotland to both seek an update and to show our commitment to support the venture. Colleagues at Transport Scotland re-iterated their appreciation of the local interest at the Business Forum event at the airport and the significant amount of ideas given to them. We were most encouraged to learn that the direction is on building the business, not selling off the business. We look forward to the Deputy First Minister’s announcement when she has considered the Business Plan in June. And of course, in the true spirit of the Chamber’s Buy Ayrshire initiative, the more we use the airport, the more chances we are giving its future success!

In the meantime, Ayrshire businesses are continuing to thrive – just take a look at the Chamber’s website News and Events page for the long list of good news stories for the latest updates, and the more in-depth stories in this magazine. Indeed, the number of new members joining the Chamber compared to those lapsing in April is 3:1, another healthy sign of our economic growth. Success breeds success, so please do keep those good news stories coming in and inspire each other!

Success breeds success!

After an absence of 22 years, the Scottish Airshow supported by Ayrshire Chamber returns on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September 2014.

Danny Anderson of Ayrshire-based Zisys Events has brought together local business and aviation professionals to return the airshow to the Ayrshire skies and host a weekend which is forecast to grow into one of Ayrshire’s leading events.

Danny said: “The objective is to stage a significant aviation event based in Ayrshire which explores the theme of flight, initially through an airshow and static aircraft display. It is designed to bring tourism, business, economic and educational benefits to Ayrshire in particular and Scotland in general through our programme: • Friday 5 September - One day

business conference with an aviation theme.

• Saturday6September-Freeairshowandfamilyfunday-allbasedontheLowGreenAyr.

• Sunday7September-Apaidentry staticdisplayofaircraftand exhibitionstandsatGlasgow Prestwickairport.• Educationopportunitiesmixed throughtheweekend.

Media co-ordinator Doug Maclean said: “A small team of aviation professionals has worked tirelessly to bring this event back to the Ayrshire skies in a new and exciting format. The plan is to grow this event to make it an annual calendar highlight over the next 5 years. We want to encourage people to come to Ayrshire for the weekend and sample some of our great entertainment and hospitality.”

The highlights of the free Saturday air show are:

• TheLancaster,HurricaneandSpitfireoftheBattleofBritainMemorialFlight.Theywillbejoinedinauniqueformationbyasecond Lancasterwhichwillbeflownin fromCanadatojointhishistoricmemorialflight.

• TheexcitingBladesaerobaticteams flownbyfourexRAFRedArrows pilots.

• ParachutistslandingontheLowGreen.

• Helicopterdisplay.

• Theawe-inspiringVulcanbomber.

The airshow and family fun day will be based on the Low Green Ayr.

On the Sunday the public will be asked to

pay a small amount to see a wide range aircraft in a static display at Glasgow Prestwick airport. Members of the public will be able to walk around and see up close some great aeroplanes.

Doug said: “We are delighted to have secured a number of very interesting aircraft for the Prestwick Airport show day. There will be entertainment and interesting stands in the terminal. Full details will be released in the coming weeks on the airshow website www.scottishairshow.com and also on our Facebook pages.

“Both Lancasters, the Spitfire and Hurricane will be at the airport overnight and depart on the Sunday afternoon. The roar of ten Merlin engines starting will bring back memories to thousands of people. They will do an air display at the airport before departing for their next show elsewhere.”

Ayr and Prestwick airport are well connected by the rail and road network from Glasgow and Edinburgh will shortly be connected to Prestwick by train. We hope that families will use the frequent and convenient services to come to this Ayrshire-based event.

Bob Alexander, the Scottish Airshow sponsorship manager, said: “Economic conditions have been tough but we are offering a free Saturday airshow and family day through sponsorship. Significant donations have come from South Ayrshire Council, Event Scotland and Prestwick-based Woodward International. Ayr-based DKM Aviation is sponsoring the two-day appearance of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Texas-based Landmark Aviation has promised cash sponsorship and offered us facilities for hosting the media launch and pleasure flights during the airshow weekend. Many other companies are considering donating to this great family Ayrshire event. The more sponsorship received by the Scottish Airshow the better the show that we can put on.”

Digital Marketing Agency, BBDCreativehavestrivedtomaketheirAyr studios a fun place to workandwitnessedamazingresultsinperformance and creativity as aresult.Do you remember when you were at Primary School and your day was interspersed with work and play? Happy days.

As we get older there is pressure for work to be seen as serious business and that work and play should somehow become separated. Studies have shown that fun in the workplace can increase employee productivity, workplace harmony, greater pride in the company and therefore loyalty to the business as well as an all important increase in the bottom line.

Creative Director, Kris Kirk, who has always strived to keep the team passionate and energised, adds his thoughts:

“We’ve turbo charged the team here at BBD with various fun ways to keep the creativity and energy flowing through. We created a dedicated den for relaxation and browsing plus a ‘team area’ with pool table, dartboard and Xbox. There’s a fridge full of healthy juice and a Nespresso coffee machine. It’s amazing how much we all benefit from a short break and chat with colleagues and I’m convinced the unity and shared creativity this creates is one of the reasons we continue to push the boundaries with our innovative, digital solutions.”

To get a closer look at how this can work for your business, drop by BBD’s studio at 41 Beresford Terrace in Ayr, have a game or two and see how this ethos has helped build their award winning, digital marketing agency.

STEPHEN GOES NUCLEAR AS HE SPENDS HIS WEEK AT HUNTERSTON

Stephen from Irvine Royal AcademyspenthisworkexperiencewithMagnoxintheHunterstonApowerstationwhichisbeingdecommissioned. He said: “I thought my work experience week was good and I learned a lot about the different types of engineering documentation, civil systems and manufacturing. I also learned about reactors and the intermediate level waste store and the storage and cleaning process of different wastes. I was also told about safety aspects like Fire Risk Assessments and the procedures in the event of a fire as well as working at height and the safety of using different tools.“I attended various meetings this week but unfortunately I was not allowed entry into the radiation control area because of my age. I would like to come back and see all the facilities I learned about from the engineers responsible for them.”

Scottish Chambers of Commerce has just published the results of a major survey of Scottish business opinion on the issues surrounding the referendum on Scottish independence.

The survey represented one of the most comprehensive measurements of Scottish business opinion to date, on the issues surrounding the referendum on independence, including Scotland’s currency options, the opportunities and risks of independence, Scotland’s relationship with Europe and taxation.

The question remains whether business leaders are now equipped with the answers to critical questions about the future environment in which they could potentially be operating in; and have they been inspired by the quality and contributions made by all political parties?

Scottish Chambers of Commerce remains impartial in the debate on Scotland’s referendum – the priority being to ensure that members are as fully informed as possible about the issues surrounding this debate. Member views are communicated through evidence-based research.

Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“It is clear that businesses are distinctly unimpressed with the quality of the referendum debates so far, with 56% rating them as poor or worse. The various political analyses do not seem to be hitting the mark as far as business is concerned.

“There is a clear message that politicians and the campaigning groups need to considerably step up their game. We urge the campaigns to rethink their engagement strategy and come forward with direct

answers. We challenge each political party to detail which powers it would bring to Scotland, when, and how it would use these to Scotland’s economic benefit.

“The key issues for businesses have heightened in importance as the referendum draws closer. Currency has jumped to the top of the list, followed by Business Rates and Income Tax, which are either entirely or partially devolved, yet Scotland’s politicians have not brought forward any ambitious plans to tackle these issues. Whether or not Scotland becomes independent, we need a new radical approach to the reform of Business Rates, and indeed the other levers which are already under the control of the Scottish Parliament. All parties need to make this commitment now.”

Meanwhile the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) published the results of an independent survey of 2400 Chamber members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland examining the impacts, opportunities and risks perceived by businesses in the rest of the UK. The survey also explored how non-Scottish businesses would react to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote on September 18.

Among the key findings of the survey were:

•Themajorityofbusinessessurveyed(85%) said that Scotland shouldremain within the UK

•Only11%offirmssaidthatScotlandshould become an independentcountry

•IfScotlandvotestoremainpartoftheUK,almosthalfofbusinesses (49%)believe that the current division ofpowershouldremainthesame

•Exactlyaquarterofbusinesses(25%)said that the Scottish Parliamentshouldhavemorepower ifScotlandremains part of the UK, but a fifth(21%)alsosaiditshouldhaveless

•6%ofcompaniesbelievethatpotentialtaxsavings(duetodifferenttaxratesbetween Scotland and the rest oftheUKinthecaseofindependence)would be an opportunity for theirbusiness

•However,reportsofnegativeimpactsareincreasing.11%offirmsreported

the debate having a negativeimpact on orders and sales, compared with only 5% inAugustlastyear.

John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

“Business opinion across the United Kingdom on the

Scottish independence debate is far from unanimous. That’s only logical, as businesses have different interests, and different views on our complex history of economic and political union.

“Businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland remain less than captivated by the intense debate unfolding north of the border. Yet they do have views on the potential impacts of a change in Scotland’s relationship with the rest of the UK.

“Business communities across the UK have diverse views on the Scottish independence debate. Regardless of how Scotland votes in September, things will never be quite the same again.”

University of the West of Scotland(UWS) is a key Scottish partner ina new skills and business supportprogramme by Creative Skillsettargeted at digital content creatorsacross the western seaboard ofScotland, most of Northern Ireland, and the six border counties of theRepublic of Ireland. The University’sparticipation in this programme wasofficially launched at an event at AyrCampuson1May2014.

Creative Skillset is the Scottish lead partner for ‘Honeycomb – Creative Works’, a cross-border and cross-regional support programme aimed at maximising the economic potential of the burgeoning creative industries sector.

The programme is supported by the EU’s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and will be delivered in partnership with the University of Ulster and Dundalk Institute of Technology. Creative Skillset’s Scottish partners include Creative Scotland, MG Alba, Screen Hi, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and UWS.

The partner organisations have identified a range of activities which will be delivered over the next year across the eligible area. These are grouped around four specific themes which are Research, Networking, Skills Development and Seed Funding.

Professor Nick Higgins, Professor in Media Practice and Director of University of the West of Scotland’s Creative Media Academy, said: “There are an incredible amount of talented freelancers and small businesses that operate outside of Scotland’s main cities and the difficulty they often face is having access to the best training and skills development. With the financial support of the Honeycomb Creative Works project, UWS’s Creative Media Academy has designed a series of activities including; digital filmmaking and screenwriting workshops, creative business enterprise CPD programmes, and modules for online and interactive content creation, that will enable local industry practitioners to fully embrace the opportunities that digital technology offers.”

Alasdair Smith, Creative Skillset Scotland Director, stated that Creative Skillset already

plays a pivotal role in developing creative talent throughout Scotland, adding:

“The Honeycomb – Creative Works programme will deliver skills and networking opportunities to companies and practitioners in the digital content sector, thereby increasing competitiveness and stimulating growth.”

He explained that in addition to networking and skills, research and seed funding would also help eligible companies become more competitive in the global marketplace.

He added: “Honeycomb beneficiaries aren’t based in Glasgow or Edinburgh; they’re based up and down the west coast from Campbeltown to Kirkcudbright, from Portree to Troon. So if your business is active in the digital content sector, and you’re based along the western seaboard of Scotland, then Honeycomb wants to hear from you.”

AYRSHIRE Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Youth Academy supports school leavers seeking to find employment by helping them identify and recognise the skills they have in order to achieve employment.

The Employer-led programme gives young people the chance to brush up on their employability skills to make them more appealing to employers when they apply for jobs.

The recent workshop held in North Ayrshire gave those who took part an opportunity to work on teambuilding, CV writing, application form writing, interview skills, social media and skills identification in an attempt to sell themselves better to employers to increase their chances of getting a job.

And it is a scheme that is providing results with five of the participants finding work thanks to the help and experience they gained.

One of the businesses involved was Sainsbury’s Irvine and they were so impressed with those taking part that they have offered a job to one of the girls. Store Manager Lynne Nimmo and HR manager Carol Spence said: “We were delighted to be involved in this project working the Chamber Youth Academy and local community. The young people taking part were all very impressive and we feel a sense of pride in watching the development of these young people and their output.

“The quality of the young people involved was excellent which was why we decided to offer one of the girls a job with us at Sainsbury’s in Irvine as we had an opening within our store and her performance merited the chance.”

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Liaison Co-ordinator, Claire Baird, explained: “The uniqueness of this programme is that it helps us lever in the skills and knowledge of Ayrshire’s business people to enhance the employability and life chances of young people. We have come to recognise that a programme such as this is not only about equipping young people with the support that they require but is also about demonstrating to businesses what they can get from harnessing the skills and talents of young people.

“We’re delighted that our latest event has seen five girls find work as a result of the help support that local employers were able to provide.”

Appetite to Lend and InvestAs economic conditions improve Bank of Scotland is increasing its lending to support more SMEs realise their growth ambitions.

The success of our small and medium sized businesses is a fundamental driving force behind a full and lasting economic recovery. As part of Lloyds Banking Group we pledged to help 100,000 new business start-ups in 2013. We exceeded this target by 20,000, delivering year-on-year net growth in advances to SMEs of 6%, while overall industry lending fell by 3%. This year as part of our 2014 SME Charter, Lloyds Banking Group have pledged an additional £1 billion of funding for the country’s small and medium sized firms.

Providing Specialist ExpertiseBank of Scotland supports businesses across a range of sectors, and our team has a wealth of expertise and industry knowledge. Our relationship managers invest time to ensure they get to know you and your business, ensuring they can offer guidance that is tailored to you and your needs.

We understand the significance of key sectors to the Scottish economy and the value that our specialist expertise can add to customer relationships and businesses’

ambitions. We work closely with a number of industry bodies to ensure we fully understand the sector your business operates within.

For example, by working with VisitScotland we ensure we understand the opportunities and challenges that businesses in the hospitality and tourism industry face every day. With a strong, long-term customer base across Scottish tourism, we have significant experience supporting small and medium sized hotels, bed and breakfast and restaurant businesses.

Lloyds Banking Group and Bank of Scotland have a long-standing relationship with the agriculture sector throughout the UK and Scotland. Well-known TV presenter and farmer, Adam Henson, is our farming ambassador, working in close conjunction with our agriculture teams to help heighten awareness of financial and environmental sustainability within the farming sector.

We’re the first and only bank to train a specialist team of Relationship Managers to The Law Society of Scotland Practice Management Standard, to ensure our team provides a specialised service with a deep understanding of the inner workings of a law firm. Meanwhile our products are also designed

specifically around the Account Rules laid out by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Helping Businesses SucceedThe economy is gathering pace and Bank of Scotland wants to help businesses take advantage of the new opportunities this creates. There is no better reflection of this than our willingness to lend and our desire to deliver the best possible package for your business.

Our Senior Managers and Relationship Managers across Scotland have personal authority to sanction lending applications, which means quick decisions can be made by managers who understand your business and its ambitions. With our 2014 SME Charter we have increased the lending amount Senior Managers can sanction, without central approval, from £500,000 to £I million, to place the decisions that affect your business, with the people who know it best.

The nationwide campaign ‘Fit in 14’ was launched in February by Commonwealth Games and Sport Minister Shona Robison to encourage Scotland’s workplaces to get more active by making physical activity a part of their everyday lives.

This year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow offers a unique opportunity to inspire Scots to become more active and create a lasting legacy and a healthier nation.

Organisations of all sizes across Scotland are being encouraged to get involved in the legacy campaign ‘Fit in 14’, with small and simple ways to improve the health and wellbeing of employees at the heart of the campaign.

Ms Robison said: “The Scottish Government is committed to increasing physical activity and we want to make Scotland a more active country by encouraging people to make physical activity a part of their everyday lives. It is well known that regular activity provides a great range of health benefits and makes people feel happier, less stressed and can add years of quality life.

“The benefit of the ‘Fit in 14’ campaign is that we don’t expect people to run a marathon or join a gym, however small measures like taking the stairs instead of the lift, or going for a walk during your lunch break are great steps forward towards a healthier lifestyle.

“Furthermore, having a physically active workforce can also lead to 27 per cent fewer sick days, an average saving of £135 per employee. It also reduces workforce injuries and accidents by 25 per cent.

“Inactivity is the second biggest cause of death globally, accounting for more than 2,500 deaths in Scotland alone each year. Our first ever Physical Activity Implementation Plan has key milestones and objectives identified for the next 10 years, and seeks to encourage Scots to enjoy more active and healthier lives.”

Further information about how to get involved with ‘Fit in 14’ can be found at www.fitin14.org or you can speak to the local Healthy Working Lives team about physical activity or any other areas of interest relating staff health and wellbeing contact 01292 885855.

New logo for local cancer support groupLocalcharityAyrshireCancerSupport ispleased tounveil their new logo andwebsite which reinforcesACS’scommitmenttoprovidetheverybestservicetothoseaffectedbycancerthroughoutAyrshire. Two Ayrshire companies were chosen to work with the charity in the design of the new identity. Prestwick design and branding agency ‘atom’was given the task of producing the organisation’s new logo and branding and Ayr based ‘Essence Creative Solutions’ which has worked closely with the charity for many years was chosen to re-build and launch the new website (www.ayrshirecs.org).

ACS has operated in Ayrshire since 1982 providing emotional support and practical help to those affected by cancer; the charity’s aim is to improve the quality of life of those living with cancer and ensure that help is readily available throughout Ayrshire for those who need it.

Their ‘Hospital Transport’ service ensures

that patients are taken from their homes to Glasgow hospitals for treatment by volunteer drivers, who use their own cars to provide transport. During the year 2012/13 ACS’s drivers completed 10,319 patient journeys covering 203,281 miles.

The charity operates Support Centres in Ayr and Kilmarnock which were opened in 1997 where, in a caring and supportive

environment, they offer a wide range of services, including counselling, support groups and

complementary therapies.

The charity does not receive any funding to help with its work and relies on the revenue from its 11 charity shops and the kindness and support of the people and businesses in Ayrshire,

John Beck, Chief Executive of Ayrshire Cancer Support said ‘We are delighted with our new website and logo and the fact that 2 local Ayrshire

companies carried out the work. It is important that Ayrshire Cancer Support

retains its established core values and services but at the same time develops a

recognizable modern identity’.

Since 1998, the family run business has been successfully running its Commercial Vehicle Centre in Ayr from a temporary site but Chairman, Jim Smith and his business partner, Bill Kerr, wanted to invest in a permanent, state of the art premises to secure the future of the business. The Cumnock, Glasgow and Ayr sites are now run by Jim and Bill’s sons, Chester Smith, William Smith and Paul Kerr and Head Office is managed by Group Financial Director Donna McClure.

The new premises are part of their succession plan to future proof the business for the next generation and to demonstrate their commitment to the local economy.

“TheChamberhelpsus tohelpothercompanies in the Ayrshire area andbeyondandtogrowourbusinessintheareawhereitallstarted.”MacKay Corporate Insurance Brokers based in Ayr offers a bespoke service to a wide variety of clients in industry and commerce.

The company was formed in 1989 by Alan MacKay and has grown into a specialist brokerage employing 22 people.Managing director David MacKay said: “We are an independent corporate insurance broker who pride ourselves on the very personalised service that we offer each client. Treating each of our corporate clients as an individual means that we can tailor insurance policies and requirements to meet their specific needs and the exact nature of their business. We work hard to protect their assets, revenues and liabilities leaving them to concentrate on running the main aspects of

their business.”He added: “we have had a long and happy association with Ayrshire Chamber and plan to continue working with the excellent team which Val Russell leads. We are supported in our aim to promote our services to Ayrshire companies and beyond and have opportunities to network and get to know other businesses in the area.“I would recommend membership of Ayrshire Chamber to any business which is serious about gaining worthwhile support to promote themselves and get their message across.”

Booth Welsh celebrates their 25years with the announcement ofa planned move to larger HeadOfficepremiseslaterthisyear.Over the last 25 years the company has grown from 2 to 200 employees and built a reputation for providing high quality control engineering solutions for blue chip clients across a wide range of industries. This proposed move will provide the foundations for the company’s ambitious growth strategy going forward and help attract new clients and employees.Martin Welsh, Managing Director, commented: “Stevenston was a great place to begin and grow the business. However, by developing more in the direction of engineering services, any

growth directly impacts on desk space therefore our growth plans require new premises. As such we propose to move to Irvine’s Bay’s Enterprise Area for Life Sciences, continuing our commitment to North Ayrshire whilst moving to an area where we are among our clients and other businesses in similar and complementary fields. “Currently Booth Welsh employs around 200 people including apprentices and graduates and the proposed new location gives the company twice the space they have currently. With 40,000 square feet to fill, more resources will be required in every area of the business from fully experienced engineers, back office support, graduates and apprentices, bringing future jobs to the people of North Ayrshire and beyond.”

The picture was taken outside of Booth Welsh’s planned new premises at Irvine Bay’s Riverside Place in Irvine where the company recently held its 25th Anniversary celebrations for employees. The business plans to move to their new location later this year in August.Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: “Booth Welsh’s move into the Enterprise Area means a firm which has grown in the area can continue its growth, providing more jobs and opportunities for local people. “Interest in the Enterprise Area continues at a high level as businesses understand the variety of positives it can bring to their company.”

Breath-taking island views and dramatic, rugged highlands have allowed the brand’s creative passion to flourish; enabling Arran Aromatics to evoke moods through an array of carefully blended scents that aim to promote positive effects on mind and body.FragranceFirstThe love of a beautifully blended aroma inspired both the Arran Aromatics name, and the lifelong pursuit of exquisite fragrances. That’s why crafting the aroma is at the heart everything that they create – from soap to candles and shea butters to bath oils, they all start with the subtle art of perfumery.Within each carefully crafted fragrance, there’s a world of dreams and memories just waiting to be experienced – like the signature After the Rain fragrance, created to capture the unique, fresh scent of Janet’s garden following a rain storm. You can also find their heartfelt love of fragrance infused throughout the beautifully redesigned Perfumer home fragrance collection, where each blend has been skilfully crafted exclusively by their own perfumer.Inspired by contemporary Scottish design, the range which launched in April 2014 epitomises their true Scottish heritage, and boasts a luxury range of candles, room sprays and reed diffusers. Each of the exclusive blends have been shaped by subtle changes in the naturally surrounding elements of the island, including the freshwater spring, meaning each batch is very subtly different.Tradition&MakingtheProductsThe first products were made entirely by hand – and that hand-finished tradition is still at the core of everything they do today, using historic techniques and vintage equipment.

Project SEARCH is a programmeto help young people with learningdisabilitiesfindandkeepajob.Itwasfirst set up in Cincinnati Children’sHospital in Ohio, USA as a result ofa need to recruit staff for relativelyroutine, butcomplexjobs, whichhadahighstaffturnover. It is a partnership that brings together relevant organisations and, in East Ayrshire, is led by three partners: East Ayrshire Council, NHS Ayrshire & Arran and Ayrshire College. A number of other partners also contribute to the delivery of the East Ayrshire programme at University Hospital, Crosshouse including Skills Development Scotland, The Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability, The Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CVO East Ayrshire and Business in the Community. Ten interns began the programme in September 2013 and attend 5 days a week between 9am and 4pm. A typical day for a Project Search intern begins with an employability skills class. After interns sign in, they undertake lessons based on daily living/employability skills, i.e., problem solving, team work, decision making, budgeting, nutrition, CV writing-instruction. The class follows an approved Project SEARCH Curriculum and in East Ayrshire all interns are being accredited for their work to SCQF Level 3. From 1000 -12.30, students participate in non-paid work placements throughout University Hospital, Crosshouse. They rotate through three internships throughout their year on the programme. At lunchtime, interns are encouraged to

eat with their co-workers before returning for their afternoon work rotations. The busy day finishes with a second classroom input before the end of the working day at 4pm.

The internships are typically 10 – 12 weeks long and are planned to meet the needs of the business and the students. The internships are designed to teach marketable, competitive, transferable skills. As well as a meaningful workplace experience and a range of transferable skills, East Ayrshire’s Project Search interns have shown over the last nine months how much they offer potential employers. Feedback from hospital managers across the range of departments has been hugely positive with all complimenting the young people on their records of near perfect attendance, excellent timekeeping and the positive commitment they’ve shown to both individual departments and the jobs themselves.

Employers should also be aware that these young people are all eligible for a range of recruitment incentives which employers of all sizes can access. Our interns may also qualify for ‘Access to Work’ which offers practical support and can pay for a range of help including adaptations to equipment, travel expenses or even disability awareness training for work colleagues. From day one, Project Search focuses on jobs and routes to employment and, as young people now approach the end of their year on the programme, we are certain that the experience and practical skills they have gained will make them valued employees for any business seeking to expand their workforce. If you feel you have a role that could be offered to one of the Project Search graduates, please contact Claire Baird at the Chamber of Commerce on 01292 678666 or [email protected]

Business Mentoring is a joint initiative between Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Enterprise and is a free service which connects businesses with experienced business mentors. The service is open to both Chamber members and non-members.

Are you looking for support, to be challenged and stimulated? Would a fresh pair of eyes help you make your business dreams a reality? Would an external perspective help you to grasp some of the opportunities out there?

If you are keen to develop yourself and your business then having a business mentor can help you work on key business skills, build confidence and widen your network and business contacts. The Scottish Chambers of Commerce are offering free business mentoring support through group support or one to one mentoring.

An experienced business mentor will be able to give the benefit of their hindsight, explaining what happened when they were in that position, what they did and what the result was. They won’t tell a business what to do, or do it for them. They will just speak of their experiences and provide additional information and ideas that will help a business make the best business decisions possible. They might offer alternatives to a business’ present track, or helpful contacts.

Having a business mentor free of charge for 12 months will:

•Giveagrowingbusinessasoundingboardtotestoutideas.

•Providealisteningearthatwillhelpalleviatetheisolation

andlonelinessfeltbymanyowner/managers.

•Actasacatalyst forbusinessmanagerscomingthroughto accelerate growth through increased confidence inmakingbusinessdecisions.

•Preparebusinessleaderstogainmaximumbenefitthroughthinkingdifferentlyabouttheirbusinesses.

•Givenewideasandnetworkstounblockbarrierstogrowth.

For anyone interested in becoming a mentor, Business Mentoring provides a framework. Being a mentor is an immensely rewarding and satisfying experience. As a mentor you can:

•Developyourcoachingskills.

•Widenyournetworkofcontacts.

•Acquire a new perspective on your own business orattitudestobusiness.

Mentoring is challenging and stimulating for both parties. Mentors feel considerable satisfaction when the business client reports back successes and have a sense of ‘putting something back’ into the system. Most importantly, they will be helping to develop a dynamic, internationally competitive Scottish economy.

Business Mentoring delivers maximum return for minimum financial input. While mentors provide their services free of charge and there in no charge to the individuals or businesses being supported – there is a cost to administering the scheme.

If you feel you could benefit from having a mentor or are interested in offering your time to help local businesses then why not get in contact with Rhona Brown, Business Mentoring Executive at the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry to find out more. Galston based renewable technologyspecialists VG Energy, along withKingspanWind and legal firm TurcanConnell, has gifted the RSPB adomestic wind turbine in an effortto help reduce the climate changeemissionsoftheorganisation. The 15-metre high KW6 turbine, which has a capacity of 6kW, has been installed at RSPB’s Loch Leven nature reserve near Kinross and it will help save energy needs at the popular reserve.Formed in 2008, award winning VG Energy provides a full turn-key solution for any renewable project whether wind, solar or biomass. Over the last six years and having sold and now maintained over 300 turbines, VG Energy has enjoyed spectacular success and are now established as the UK market leader for selling and installing wind turbines ranging from 6kW to 2.0MW in size. RSPB believes that renewable energy is an essential tool in the fight against climate change, which poses the single biggest

threat to the long-term survival of birds and wildlife. The conservation charity is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by generating its energy needs from renewable sources wherever possible. In order to minimise landscape impact, and to avoid potential bird strikes to geese and other waterbirds at the reserve, the planned location for the turbine is near a wooded area beside the car park for the visitor centre. As part of the planning application a thorough ecological assessment was carried out which concluded that there was no significant risk to birds.

Jim Paterson, Managing Director of VG Energy, said “We are delighted to be part of this fantastic initiative, along with Turcan Connell, and Kingspan Wind. We sincerely hope that this project will demonstrate to the public and others the benefits of renewable energy and show that wind

turbines can be compatible with birds and wildlife.” Uwe Stoneman, RSPB’s Tayside reserves manager, said: “Loch Leven is a fantastic place to enjoy a diverse range of birds, mammals and habitat, all of which we are working every-day to protect. This nature reserve has always made efforts to be ‘green’ and reduce its carbon footprint which has been recognised by the Green Tourism Business Gold Award.”Gavin Kerr, Kingspan Wind’s UK Manager, says “We commend the RSPB for

becoming the latest in a long list of organisations that have benefited from small wind. “Our experience of installing turbines in more than 70 countries and on every continent has demonstrated

the technology’s adaptability – what’s more we believe it has now come of age. Our turbines are entering their third decade of service, proving that small wind is no longer a new or untested technology but an obvious choice in addressing localised sustainability.”

Scottish Apprenticeship Weekgotoff toaflyingstartwhen fourAyrshire College second-yearaircraft engineering apprenticesemployed at Prestwick AircraftMaintenanceLtdwereannouncedaswinnersintheYoungInnovatorsChallenge2014.Theyweretheonlyapprentices on the winners’ listwhichincludednineuniversities. The Young Innovators Challenge invited Scotland’s students to develop innovative proposals to address problems related to healthcare and wellbeing, green and sustainable energy resources, or smarter communities and infrastructure. Ayrshire Apprentices Martin Gemmell, Christopher Leitch, Conor MacKellar and Ross Wallace designed their innovation using skills they have developed as apprentices. Ayrshire College brings employers and education together to make sure that the skills young people leave college with are those that industry needs. The College works with companies to develop their

workforce through apprenticeships and, this year it will support up to 900 modern apprentices to continue or start their training with employers in sectors like engineering, hospitality, construction, care, hairdressing and motor vehicle maintenance. These are exciting times at Ayrshire College. A wide range of full-time courses is available from August, including new courses introduced in response to demand from local employers. New facilities mean that students study industry relevant courses using industry standard resources in environments that mirror the relevant industry sector. In April, Ayrshire College was approved by the National Skills Academy for Process Industries and the Composites Skills Alliance as the first training provider in Scotland to deliver composites training for the aeronautical, renewables and automotive industries. Scott McLarty, Vice President UK and Malaysia Operations at Spirit Aerosystems said “The opening of the Composite Materials Centre at Ayrshire College will help address the future skills requirements of Spirit AeroSystems (Europe) Ltd.”

The introduction of composites training in this purpose-built facility is the latest example of the College’s commitment to respond to industry needs, and enhances the College’s position as a leading provider of training in aeronautical engineering in Scotland. Composite repair and testing is an essential part of many industries across Ayrshire, Scotland and globally, and the Composite Materials Centre will be an excellent resource for companies. Tom Preece, Composites Skills Manager at the National Skills Academy Process Industries said “This new centre demonstrates how switched on Ayrshire College is to providing state of the art resources to offer training in such a leading edge technology.”Ayrshire College offers an extensive range of aerospace engineering qualifications from National Certificates up to a BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering (delivered in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland), as well as Modern Apprenticeships and training courses such as EASA Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence.

Munro Business Park has been created by Galston duo, Matthew Dodds and Bill Strachan, who built up a successful communications company, UA Comms Ltd. in Kilmarnock in the 70’s. After a takeover by a national company, Matthew & Bill focused their energy and business skills in creating a portfolio of business premises throughout the Kilmarnock area.“I heard of the offer from Helen McBride through Business Gateway and the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, I was really excited and asked to see the unit available”, recalled, Helen. “I have to admit that I thought it too good to be true and I expected it to be very small, probably pretty poorly decorated and with little or no office equipment. “Well, to say that I was very impressed is an understatement on arrival at Munro Business Park. From the ‘get go’ before even entering the offices I could see

there are good parking facilities and the building is nicely surrounded by a well-kept grassed area and has secure entry which is important for me working on my own. The offices are modern, bright and well furnished with a well-equipped communal kitchen, spacious meeting room and good toilet facilities. And the benefits of this keep coming as she explained: “To have somewhere within the catchment area of my work is really important. Clients like to know that you are ‘local’ and easy to reach and that you can attend their property quickly in any emergency. Marketing and advertising looks more professional with a proper office address rather than a residential address.“Being able to invite clients into a stylish

professional environment is of great benefit to me. I have always been very customer focused and professional in my work and to have the office facilities available to back this up is really important.“I can also be completely focused on my tasks working at the office, without worrying about annoying distractions, particularly when drawing up important legal paperwork, trying to write blogs or improving the content on paperwork. In my line of work, paperwork has to be clear, concise and able to pass legal criteria – much easier to do when in a quality office environment.”Perhaps the biggest benefit is that the office is rent free for the first six months meaning it is one less thing to worry about for her.She said: “Finally, one of the most important benefits of securing this office space – the

fact that it is free for six months!“When you are starting up on your own the costs can be considerable, particularly in my line of business. Becoming a member of professional bodies, residential management databases, website advertising, setting up your own website, emails …..the list goes on and on. “For me, it is important that I show myself to the world as being a well-qualified, experienced, customer service professional working to best practice – having the opportunity to benefit from this fantastic offer of a beautiful office space free for six months means the world to me.” And, Carol, had another reason to be cheerful as she secured a nationally-

recognised industry qualification, which is required to qualify for entry to the Association of Residential Lettings Agents. She passed the NFoPP Level 3 Technical Award in Scottish Residential Letting and Property Management, the industry standard for all agents in this area. The ARLA are a self-regulating body specialising in the private rented sector and represent more than 5,000 letting offices across the UK.Carol started her career as a Letting Agent in 1997 explained: “I decided to start my studies as a result of starting my own business and I am thrilled to have secured the level 3 Technical Award.“For me, it is evidence of my professionalism and shows clients that they are dealing with someone who is knowledgeable and that they can trust to do a good job.”

David said: “NetSuite has been impressed with the way Eureka hit the ground running in creating new add ons on their platform. In less than a year of SDN membership, we have developed two NetSuite products. Exhibiting will give us a greater chance to understand what customers are really looking for and allow us to build on our products.”

Alistair Livingstone, Managing Director at Eureka Solutions, said: “Exhibiting at an event of such global significance, in the home of technological innovation, is a tremendous opportunity for Eureka and the development team.”

The Certificate of Work Readiness is designed with one aim - to help young people entering the world of work.It was developed in conjunction with employers who reported that young people often lack the basic skills when entering into employment. South Ayrshire Council’s Skills Towards Employment Project (STEP) is currently delivering the qualification as part of their Employability Fund programme which consists of in-house training before going into a work placement to help the young person understand the expectations of the employer. The main focus of the award is the feedback from the employer to help identify the young person’s strengths and what needs improved upon in relation to work.Shannon Holligan, who recently completed the Certificate of Work Readiness said: “I went into a work placement in a care home and I set myself

personal development targets to help me become more confident dealing with people with communication difficulties. It was good getting feedback from my employer I could learn from. I’ve started a Modern Apprenticeship and am working towards my SVQ in Health & Social Care.”Employers are needed to support young people achieve this qualification by offering a quality work experience with no commitment of a permanent post, however, it can provide an extended work trial to establish the suitability of someone. It allows employers opportunities for staff development mentoring a young person on work experience.Working with local employers can help equip young people with the skills required for the local labour market. It is vital that the qualification is credible, recognised by employers and valuable in the recruitment process. If you can offer a work placement please contact Susan Kerr at STEP on 01292 612301.
