OHSU Casey Eye Institute is a leader in clinical eye care and is recognized for its high-quality clinical care, rigorous academic program and its vision research.

Casey faculty are responsible for many of the most recent advances in ophthalmology, which have revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of many ophthalmic conditions. Advances in optical coherence tomography, ophthalmic informatics, corneal refractive, retina and pediatric eye care have been pioneered at Casey.

Patients receiving care at Casey receive the most up-to-date and innovative approaches to diagnosis and management. We are proud to be ranked in the top 10 NEI-funded Eye Research Institutes in the United States.

For the past fi ve years, our average ranking for federally funded research has been fi fth out of about 140 programs in the country. Our research faculty are making signifi cant contributions in many areas including stem cell therapy, gene therapy, glaucoma, infl ammatory eye diseases and retinal diseases.

Right now, we are conducting seven gene therapy clinical trials for retinal degenerative diseases. People across Oregon and beyond will benefi t from these new therapies.

Casey has a unique commitment to training future ophthalmologists and subspecialists. We have 15 ophthalmology residents and fellowships in cornea, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, uveitis and pediatric ophthalmology. It’s important to us to instill in these trainees a sense that service to the community is part of professionalism. This will ensure that our citizens are well served in the coming decades.

Current research

Our researchers are exploring ways to develop and improve treatment for glaucoma, infl ammatory diseases, macular degeneration and inherited eye diseases.

Since 2009, our patients have been participating in gene therapy trials for retinal degenerative diseases. We currently offer more gene therapy trials (seven) than any other center in the United States and are eagerly anticipating that this promising technology for one disease, Leber congenital amaurosis, will progress to an FDA-approved treatment in the next year.

We are leaders in research on the application of biomedical informatics to clinical ophthalmology and computer-based image analysis for clinical diagnosis.

Our COOL lab has pioneered OCT angiography, allowing us to noninvasively image the capillaries within the eye and transform the treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

Twenty-fi ve years of excellence

In the quarter-century since, Casey Eye Institute has become an international leader in gene therapy, ophthalmic informatics and noninvasive imaging technology.

Some signature Casey Eye Institute accomplishments:

• First to perform gene therapy for Stargardt disease and Usher syndrome.

• Identifi ed genes that cause macular degeneration and glaucoma.

• Pioneered clinical trials of biologic therapies for uveitis.

• Led a study to establish the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

• Developed OCT imaging platforms and algorithms that are used internationally.

Since 1991, annual patient visits have risen from 12,000 to current totals of more than 132,000, and the faculty has grown from 10 to 84. In 2016, 500 candidates applied for fi ve places in the residency program.

Our mission is to eliminate blindness through education, innovation and community service. In Oregon, outreach efforts include vision screening programs for preschoolers and underserved adults. Through partnerships in Myanmar, Thailand and American Samoa, our clinicians and researchers disseminate skills and resources across the globe.

In 2016, OHSU Casey Eye Insti tute celebrated its 25th anniversary. What began as a small ophthalmology department in 1948 is now a major nati onal comprehensive eye-care center, rigorous academic program and pioneering research facility. This growth was spurred by a 1991 move to a new state-of-the-art building named for UPS founders George and James Casey.

Services expertise

We provide several unique services to Oregon and the surrounding region:

• Macular Degeneration Center: This comprehensive center is dedicated to research, clinical care and patient education regarding the leading cause of blindness in Oregon.

• Oregon State Elks Children’s Eye Clinic: Provides a statewide preschool vision screening program and treatment for pediatric glaucoma, cataract and orbital and retinal diseases.

• Adult and child eye tumor treatment.• Neuro-ophthalmology: Bridges the connection

between eye and brain.• An Ophthalmic Informatics Center: Pioneering

telemedicine approaches to screening and diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity and other eye diseases. Coordinates the use of informatics and electronic health records in ophthalmology.

• Diagnostic laboratories for eye pathology and ocular immunology.

A new building for children’s eye care

Plans are being drawn up for a new facility for the Oregon State Elks Children’s Eye Clinic. The building will be adjacent to the Casey Eye Institute and will house subspecialty pediatric care as well as the Macular Degeneration Center, the Reading Center and the Gene Therapy Center.

Every year the Elks Children’s Eye Clinic provides more than 18,000 pediatric visits, performs 1,200 surgeries and supplies glasses to children in need.

By consolidating in this optimally designed space, the pediatric and macular degeneration programs will be able to offer enhanced services to more patients.

Construction of the 60,000-square-foot building, named for a $20 million philanthropic investment from the Oregon State Elks, will begin in July 2018.

Continuing medical education

Casey Eye Institute offers health care professionals up to four and a half hours of CME per month including grand rounds, lectures and imaging conferences.

Presentations, which are streamed for the convenience of professionals who live outside the area, are given by nationally recognized speakers who have published high-impact journal articles.

A unique feature: Speakers provide online questions allowing audiences to test their knowledge before and after the presentation, and acquire self-assessment CME.

Ophthalmology grand rounds take place twice monthly at Casey Eye Institute or at Legacy’s Devers Eye Institute. Watzke imaging conferences are held twice monthly at OHSU. An annual all-day meeting takes place in May.
