In September 2011, the YLD logo competition was launched to select a unifying symbol for the programme. The competition attracted 15 entries from young leaders all over the world and all participants in the programme were invited to vote for their favourite logo on the YLD website. The winner was Claudia Labate from Brazil. Claudia is 23 years old and has worked closely with the Juvenile Diabetes Association of Brazil (ADJ) since 2009, where she is currently responsible for social media. She has also co-authored a children’s book on diabetes, which will be published at the end of November 2012. Here is Claudia’s explanation of what her logo stands for:

Colours

The logo has 7 colors, representing the SEVEN CONTINENTS on earth.

Blue Circle

Emerging as if it is blooming and not closed to show that the YLD is not something closed, but open minded to new definitions of what is diabetes and how we can help people with diabetes.

Shape

Of a lamp referring to IDEAS, INSIGHTS, INNOVATION, LIGHT…those were concepts of the group I imagined while thinking about the logo briefing. The green and the blue shape shows CARE. The purple (color of mystery) refers to MYSTERY of what the future will bring us. The pink image is half a HEART (turned 90º), and when this heart comes into contact with the blue circle we get orange, which represents ENERGY.

Feelings

Throughout the design process, I asked my friend that all of the words below should be represented: HAPPINESS - When you look at it, BEAUTY THROUGH DIVERSITY/HETEROGENEITY - It should be beautiful because different things are being put together. In this case a group that includes individuals of differing ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, religious and political beliefs, sexes and ages. HOLISTIC - I wanted the logo to be something that communicates it´s about diabetes, but not something directly related to diabetes, therefore no needles, no numbers, or symbols from the “diabetes world” etc. This was done to help promote a more HOLISTIC view of what our impact means to the world.

In December 2013 IDF organized the World Diabetes Congress (WDC) in Melbourne, Australia. The Young Leaders in Diabetes programme (YLD) took this opportunity to organize the 2nd edition of the YLD Leadership Training. The aim of the YLD Leadership Training was to provide the Young Leaders with leadership skills; connect them to other Young Leaders and diabetes experts from around the world; and empower them to make a change in the lives of people with diabetes.

The iterinaries

-27 November : 124 Young Leaders from 66 countries arrived in Melbourne.

-28 November until 30 November : Young Leaders received an extensive training with workshops in engaging with media, managing diabetes and diabetes education, diabetes advocacy, ethical codes in the diabetes world, organizing diabetes youth camps etc.

-1 December : YLD General Assembly was held in which the Young Leaders discussed their new YLD Constitution and elected their Executive Council and Regional Council representatives for the next two years. New YLD President-Elect Sana Ajmal about the YLD General Assembly:

“The YLD General Assembly provides insight and training for the Young Leaders to learn how organizations like the IDF are operated and what the role of a leader in development of an organization is.”

- 2 December until 6 December : Young Leaders attended the World Diabetes Congress. To introduce the participants of the WDC to the YLD and to show the drive and passion of the Young Leaders, they took part in the opening ceremony and spoke at several of the congress sessions. Besides attending the official WDC sessions, the Young Leaders also attended sessions specifically organised for them and their IDF Member Associations to engage and discuss local, regional and global issues and solutions. Shelley Yeager, YLD Faculty member and mentor about the impact of the Young Leaders:

“I really believe that showcasing the professionalism, talents and passion of the Young Leaders at the WDC is a winning strategy for changing the outcomes of diabetes globally. By working together through Member Associations and collaborative projects, and with help from talented global diabetes leaders, the Young Leaders have more dramatic possibilities for changing the lives of people with diabetes worldwide.”

At the end of the programme the Young Leaders had to say good bye to their new friends and although sad, they knew that this good bye was the start of a new chapter in their lives. Debbie Jones, Chair of YLD, about how the Young Leaders contributed to the success of the YLD Leadership Training in Melbourne:

“In Melbourne we did not only welcome new Young Leaders, but also celebrated the success of the Young Leaders from Dubai, who over the last two years have completed projects on diabetes locally and globally, written their own Constitution and together raised awareness of diabetes. Melbourne saw democracy in action as these Young Leaders held their own General Assembly and discussed together how to achieve the global goals of IDF. Therefore, it is a privilege and honour to serve as Chair of this programme.”

In next few years with the continuous support from the YLD Faculty and the IDF global network, the Young Leaders will use their creativity, enthusiasm and determination to conduct projects that improve the lives of people with diabetes in their country, their region and worldwide, or in other words: ‘Young Minds, Fresh Ideas, Real Change’.
