Please find below a copy of the application form for the Young Scottish Jazz Musician 2013 competition.

The competition is organized, managed and produced by the Scottish Jazz Federation in partnership with Aberdeen International Youth Festival and Shell. Our main sponsor is Creative Scotland and our final is recorded by BBC Radio Scotland’s Jazzhouse. We also acknowledge support form Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals, ESP Music Rentals and our many volunteers.

The overall winner will hold the title for a year with the opportunity to perform and to represent the best of what Scotland has to offer both at home and further a field.

The Final is to be hosted by Aberdeen International Youth Festival at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen on Wednesday 31st July and with a concert for the winner, featuring some of our former YSJM winners, at the Blue Lamp on the 1st August.

Interested musicians should be 23 or under on 1 April 2013 and have a residential address in Scotland. (Note: We will continue our category for the under 17s.) Former winners of the under 17 category can now apply for the main competition. To apply, read the rules below carefully, complete the attached application form and send to the address shown by Friday 31 st May at 12 noon.

The Scottish Jazz Federation was set up in 2005 to represent the needs of the jazz community in Scotland. Its aims are:

To work towards developing jazz in Scotland. Specifically, to benefit the public by increasing the availability of high quality jazz music and education in Scotland and the level of participation as players, learners and listeners.

To help represent the interests of Scottish jazz. SJF aims to become the recognised representative body for Scottish jazz artists, audience members and educators; able to lobby policy-makers, co-ordinate action and deliver definitive research.

RULES OF THE COMPETITIONPlease read carefully before completing the Application Form

APPLICATIONSClosing Date: Friday 31st May at 12 noon.

Musicians must complete an application form and return it to the address given with:A 3-minute recording, onto CD, of 1 track, which can be recorded solo or accompanied (i.e. playalong), the recording must include improvisation. You must not record your name, age or announce your track on the recording. Clearly mark your recording with your name only (in capital letters). This will not be seen by the judges. Test your CD to check that it definitely plays on a CD player and computer before sending. The application form must include 25 words describing yourself – do not miss this out.

An adjudication panel will choose 10 semi finalists from entries received. The preliminary round will be a blind adjudication. The panel will not know which applicant they are listening to.

All semi finalists will be notified on the 4th June, 2013 by email and phone. Recordings cannot be returned to applicants.

SEMI-FINAL MENTORING WEEKEND – Friday 7th – Sunday 9th June, 2013 Semi Finalists will take part in an exciting weekend of playing, mentoring and fun. Applicants should make sure they are available for this weekend event, which includes jam sessions, tuition, group work, rehearsals and a final afternoon performances. Semi-finalists will perform a 10-minute slot on the final day with a rhythm section and will be judged by their tutors and invited guests. The concert may be open to the public and tickets will be on sale at the relevant box office nearer the time. Family and friends will be invited to attend. NOTE: Semi finalist who are under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent / guardian / responsible adult for the entire weekend. Accommodation & sustenance will be provided.

The winner of the under 17 category and the finalists for Young Scottish Jazz Musician 2013 will be announced the following week. Our under 17 winner will be presented with their prize at school or place of study and invited to the final as our guest.

FINAL – Wednesday 31st July 2013The final will be held at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen in partnership with Aberdeen International Youth Festival. www.aiyf.org. Finalists will perform for 10 minutes. A professional rhythm section will be provided. You should be available for most of the day as rehearsal time will be allocated from late morning on the day. The final will be recorded live by BBC Radio Scotland, 92-95FM, 810 MW and on Digital for the Jazz House. The Young Scottish Jazz Musician winner must also be available to perform at Aberdeen International Youth Festival on Thursday 1st August at the legendary Blue Lamp with past Young Jazz Musician winners. Accommodation will be supplied for finalists where necessary and food / refreshments.

Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2013 will be the musician who, in the opinion of the judges, best displays the potential to pursue a career in jazz music.

ELIGIBILITYApplicants should be no older than 23 on 1 April 2013 and have a residential address in Scotland. Previous winners of the maincompetition cannot re-apply. Previous winners of the under 17 category can reapply.Applicants should ensure they are available for the semi-final and final dates before applying.

PRIZESThe winner will receive a cash prize of £1000 plus £1000 towards a recording as well as performing at a number of festivals and venues during the following year including Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals. In addition, they will tour 6 venues in Scotland in 2014 with their own band.
