In your life, there are probably many problems (if positive opportunities!)

Think of: A big problem (needs lots of time and

effort) A medium problem (some time and

some effort) A small problem (little time and little

effort)

Page 3: Young Leaders

No seriously…Every project has a mix of big,

medium, and small problems. You are about to solve a problem….

Page 4: Young Leaders

You must fill the jar in front of you.You can choose from the rocks, the

rice, and the water. The winning pair (yes you work

together!) will have the heaviest jar!Any questions?

Page 5: Young Leaders

OK it is a box of chocolates according to Forrest Gump.

The heaviest (and therefore hardest!) jars will have lots of rocks!

HOWEVER Filling in lots of rice means more weight And topping up with lots of water means

more weight! HANDY HINT – Do the big stuff first,

then the medium stuff, then the small stuff

Page 6: Young Leaders

Imagine a piece of course work…You have planningYou have writing each chunkYou have checking and presentingWhich one is the rock, which is the

rice, which is the water?

My mate Marc has a party to plan.He spends ages deciding on the

colour scheme (red and black is very in for EMOs this year)

He wanders round the supermarket buying stuff he thinks is good.

He remembers to tell people about the party the day before.

WHAT DID HE DO WRONG?

Page 8: Young Leaders

Look at each standard. What have you done today that can

be used as evidence. THINK POSITIVE!

What score will you give according to the standards given (this is the hard bit)

Page 9: Young Leaders

So you did badly in some standards, great in others….

Fill in your action plan – how will you change things? Be honest and say what is wrong!

YOU WILL NEVER IMPROVE UNLESS YOU ADMIT TO FAILING < btw I hate that word!

Always think of what was good and what could be better – works to be POSITIVE.

Look at a standard…. 1.1 Give necessary instructions to help

a group with a task. Look at the criteria I show a reasonable understanding of

the aims of a task. Tell us how you did it: I understood that the task required the

heaviest weight and put as many heavy items in as possible. I also thought of putting other items in.

This would get you a 3-4. Any ideas?

Page 16: Young Leaders

Today we have covered all the criteria preprinted on your sheet.

How have we done it?

Page 17: Young Leaders

Make sure you fill in evidence for each standard today.

Get the standards signed by myself or Mr Howell in the next week.

Think how you can prove you have got better in EVERYTHING you do!

OK, the winners get….AS MANY ROCKS AS THEY CAN TAKE
