Join us for the Second Community Meeting about economic development initiatives in Cosmopolis! The Grays Harbor Council of Governments (GHCOG) and City of Cosmopolis are working with a consultant team (Stantec Consulting Services, Leland Consulting Group, and Walker Macy) to develop a strategy for revitalizing vacant and underutilized properties to stimulate public and private investment. We continually seek input from business/property owners, community representatives, residents, and other stakeholders to help identify economic development opportunities, prioritize City initiatives/projects, and create a vision for the future of the Cosmopolis waterfront and downtown areas (see enclosed figure). This is the second community engagement event for the city’s planning project; the first meeting occurred in May 2019. This process will result in a common vision, action plan, public investment prioritizes and potential changes to the City’s zoning standards. This process will also guide the region’s economic development strategy and business recruitment efforts. Meeting Focus: The City and the GHCOG invite business/property owners, residents and other stakeholders to join us for a follow up community meeting to present our initial area findings, summarize the community’s goals that we heard, and provide a series of recommendations to bring economic prosperity to Cosmopolis. Project Background and Funding: In 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $600,000 of Brownfield Assessment Grants to a Coalition led by the GHCOG and supported by the cities of Cosmopolis, Aberdeen and Hoquiam. A portion of the Grant funds are being used to prepare an economic development strategy for Cosmopolis to attract new investment and support reuse/revitalization of underutilized properties for community benefit. The remainder of the Grant funds are being used to perform environmental assessments on catalyst sites to facilitate property transactions and redevelopment, prepare an inventory of opportunity sites in Cosmopolis, and facilitate community engagement.
