February 2018 Dear Parents, Thank you for your interest in applying for a partial scholarship for your child for school year 2018-2019. Since 1963, IST has provided an excellent educational experience to students who have proceeded to universities and other schools throughout the world. We are proud of the calibre of our staff and the work that they do; we are even prouder of the students with whom we work day by day. Our students represent many nationalities, including Tanzanian who, at about 20% of the student body, are currently the largest group represented although not the majority. IST is an IB World School authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer its programmes for the Primary years, Middle years and, for our oldest students, the Diploma Programme. We are accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA). Accreditation by CIS and MSA indicates the high quality of our school in international terms, as well as to our desire to continually improve in all that we do. We strive to provide a world-class education for all our students, one that prepares them thoroughly for the contemporary challenges of study and work. We do so in a fascinating country, with many excellent learning opportunities beyond the school grounds. Important as academics are, we also want our students to be active and to learn about the society around them through our programmes of community engagement and service learning. The partial scholarship is an annual scholarship and reflects a reduction in the tuition fee by up to 30%. In order to be considered for a partial scholarship in subsequent years, applicants must reapply. It is vital for us that parents applying for a place for their child understand as much as possible about the school’s ethos and approach to education. It can be tempting to apply to a school simply because it is the largest or best-known school in the area but this can lead to a difficult situation if the “fit” is not right. IST has made a conscious choice to provide an education that is international and independent. With students of more than 60 nationalities and teachers from over 20 countries, we are not rooted in the education system of any one country and we aim, rather, to use the best practices from around the world. We do not rank students against their classmates; instead we use criterion-referenced assessment, which judges what students know and can do, rather than how much better or worse they are than those around them. We assess students continuously and in different ways – our students learn to be flexible! We challenge our students to think critically about a range of age-appropriate issues, including religion, ethics, personal behaviour, politics and social issues. We want our students to understand that people can validly hold differing views yet continue to enjoy warm relations. We also want them to learn that it is good to question one’s own beliefs, values and actions as well as those of other people. We believe that all the adults in our community – teachers, other staff members, parents and older students – should model good behaviour and learning habits to our students. We believe that students should be guided to develop self-discipline and a love of learning.
You will find a statement of our core values and vision in this letter and I ask that you read it carefully, so that you can make a fully informed decision about whether IST is the most suitable school for your children. All the necessary forms to apply for a partial scholarship at IST are in the following pages. Once completed, please send the material as email attachments to [email protected] or deliver in person to the Elementary Admissions Office (off of United Nations Road, Upanga) or the Secondary Admissions Office (corner of Haile Selassie/Chole Roads, Masaki). Once we receive your complete application and all the required documents, the application will be reviewed and you will be informed as soon as possible of the outcome of the review. Selected applicants will be invited for testing if required. If you have questions or would like to receive more detailed information about the programmes and activities our school has to offer, please contact Ms. Mwamy Sykes, Admissions Director ([email protected]). Thank you again for your interest. Sincerely,
Mark Hardeman, Ed.D. Director IST Mission: Challenging, inspiring and supporting all our students to fulfil their potential and improve the world. IST Vision: IST will be a global leader in the education of internationally-mobile young people. All students, regardless of their starting point, will think critically, achieve academically and develop the wisdom to make good choices. They will show curiosity and creativity in addressing authentic problems, local and global. They will pursue their varied passions with enthusiasm, developing resilience, perseverance and confidence. Understanding the diversity of people and cultures, they will act kindly, fairly and responsibly. All members of the IST community will work together to fulfil this Vision. IST Values: All members of the IST community are: • Responsible: We act responsibly, positively and constructively, towards ourselves and other people. We learn from our mistakes and accept the consequences of our actions.
• Inquiring: We show curiosity, perseverance and open-mindedness in seeking to understand and solve problems. We persevere in the face of difficulties and we embrace the learning that comes through failure as well as the joy of success.
• Compassionate: We empathise with others and act with care and kindness and courage. In our interactions, we behave with patience, generosity and integrity.
• Balanced: We believe in a broad education for our students, seeing the value for young people of participation in a varied curriculum.
• Diverse: We treasure the diversity within the IST community, using the rich opportunities for deeper understanding that come from our differences.

2. I understand that failure to disclose all necessary information on the application form concealing pertinent information

3. I agree to support IST’s policies, rules and regulations. 4. I agree to attend parent-teacher-student conferences and to attend meetings the School may convene about my child. 5. I agree to pay the tuition and fees due IST in accordance with the payment plan that I selected.

6. I understand that an offer of a place is contingent on there being a seat available in the Grade into which IST deems my child may be accepted.*
7. I understand that students must sign an Acceptable User Policy (AUP) to gain access to a computer. Access to the
school’s hardware, software and network may be withdrawn if this AUP is broken. 8. I understand that IST reserves the right to determine the placement of my child in the Grade or subjects judged most
appropriate for the student’s school experience and age. 9. I understand that the cover for personal accident insurance or loss of personal possessions is my responsibility and that
IST does not provide insurance for students taking part in School activities. 10. I understand that IST does not guarantee my child will advance to the next Grade. 11. I understand that re-enrolment from one year to the next at IST is not guaranteed and that the school reserves the right
to discontinue my child’s enrolment if the School’s view is that my child’s needs cannot be met at IST, my child’s academic performance is unsatisfactory or my child’s behaviour is deemed by the School to jeopardise the welfare of the school community.
12. I understand that my child must reside with one or both parents or a legal guardian in a permanent residential situation
in Dar es Salaam. 13. I understand that, starting in Grade 4, IST offers Grade and age-appropriate trips, some of them overnight, which are
integral to the school’s programmes and/or commitment to community service. I agree to ensure my child’s participation.
14. I understand that the school is required by law to hold details of the residence status in Tanzania of all IST students. In
this regard, if I am already a resident in Tanzania or a Tanzanian citizen, I am required to submit a copy of my child’s passport or other relevant residence documentation along with this application. If I am not already a resident, I am required to submit my child’s residence document as soon as it is available.
* NOTE: When a student is accepted and for any reason, the starting date of the student is delayed for a future term (quarter or semester) in a Grade where there are five or fewer open seats, a ‘seat holding fee’ will be charged for each term (quarter or semester) when a student is not in attendance up to the term of actual attendance. This fee must be paid by a non-attending student in order to guarantee the availability of a seat when the student is ready to begin attending. A student who is not already in attendance and is unwilling to pay the seat holding fee is not guaranteed a seat. However a student not paying the seat holding fee is still regarded as “accepted” and will be accorded a seat, if a seat is available at the time when he or she is ready to begin attending IST, until the end of the academic year in question. Once a student is accepted, the student is guaranteed a seat, unless after being contacted by IST, due to five or fewer open seats in that grade level, the parent/guardian of the student declines to pay the seat holding fee. A seat can only be held for the school year under review. Seat held is neither transferrable to another student nor automatically rolled over to the next school year. 10. Guardianship Agreement I understand that IST has a policy under which every enrolled student must be residing with a responsible adult guardian in Dar es Salaam. In the case where both parents must be out of Dar es Salaam, I agree to notify the school in writing with the name, residential and mailing addresses and phone numbers of the person(s) designed to serve as our child’s guardian(s). I also understand that the school does not accept household employees as responsible adult guardians. I further understand that failure to notify the school of a guardian during a time when both parents are absent from Dar es Salaam could jeopardize our child’s place at IST. All IST students are expected to dress in a respectful and appropriate manner. Students in Grades 6-10 are expected to wear an IST polo shirt to school on a daily basis. Students are expected to wear the school polo shirt from the time they enter school in the morning until the end of the school day. The IST polo shirt is a white, light blue, gray, or yellow polo-shirt with a collar and an IST logo on the left breast. The IST polo shirt should be neat and clean and not contain any pictures or writing, apart from the IST logo. If a student chooses to wear a t-shirt or vest underneath the school uniform, it must be plain. In cold or wet weather, students may wear a plain white or plain blue sweater or jacket over their IST polo shirt. IST polo shirts can be purchased at the Secondary Campus Admissions Office.

Theme Dress Days
On occasion various student groups may be given permission to organize a Theme Dress Day for secondary students. This means that students in Grades 6-10 are not required to wear their school polo shirt on that day or blue/black pants. Students may wear denim. However, regardless of the theme, students are expected to comply with the rest of the above-stated Gr. 6-12 guidelines.
Parent Expectation
Parents are expected to help by monitoring the dress of their children before they leave
for school.
Finding suitable clothing (e.g. pants, shorts, skirts, skorts) that complies with the IST
Dress Code can be challenging in local stores. Consequently, we advise parents to have
suitable clothing made at a local tailor if appropriate clothing is not available in local
stores.
