Lesson Objective:You will be able to explain the steps of the Nervous System and identify the organs and tissues involved.
What do you know about your brain?
Are You Right Brained or Left Brained? •The brain is divided into two sides. •Often, people tend to lean towards one or the other. •Time to test ourselves!
Where did you fall?
I am creative and artistic!
I am logical and good with numbers!
The Nervous System:•The system that controls movement and feeling between the brain and other parts of the body.
•Uses nerves to get information from the environment and to send information from the brain to the body
What is a “nerve”?
Nerves: •A fiber that sends sensations to the brain or spinal cord. •A “neuron” is a nerve cell.
Neurons: •The basic unit of the nervous system.
•Cell that conducts impulses○ made up of dendrites, axon,
and cell body
Neurons:
Neurons: •Dendrites: receives the information carries to it cell body
•Cell Body: processes information
•Axon: single-branch and transmits information to other neurons
Neurons: •Neurons use action potentials
and neurotransmitters to send information.
•Action Potentials: electrical impulses along the axon
•Neurotransmitters: chemical signals from axon to dendrites.
The Nervous System:
•Two main parts:1. Central Nervous System 2. Peripheral Nervous System
Central Nervous System •Includes the nerves in the brain and the spinal cord.•The spinal cord connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain.
Brain & Spinal Cord: •The spinal cord receives information from the skin, joints, and muscles.•The spinal cord also carries the nerves that control all of your movements.•The brain receives information directly from your ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. •The brain receives information from the rest of your body through the spinal cord.
I only receive information directly through the ears, eyes, nose, and mouth!
I receive information from the skin, joints, and muscles and I let the brain know what’s up!
What would be happening with your nerves if you touched this hot stove?
1. Your skin touches the hot surface. 2. Nerves in the spinal cord detect pain. 3. Spinal cord sends information to the
brain. 4. Brain sends response back to the spinal
cord. 5. Spinal cord controls movement and you
pull your hand away.
What would be happening to your nerves if you were walking outside
and saw this?
1. Your eyes send information to your brain.
2. Your brain detects danger and sends a signal to your spinal cord.
3. Your spinal cord allows you to begin moving away from lion.
Peripheral Nervous System •All of the neurons that are outside the brain and spinal cord. •The peripheral nervous system brings in the information. •That information is then carried to the brain and spinal cord.
Central Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System 2 Parts
1. Motor Division -- sends signals from CNS to muscles or glands
2. Sensory Division -- sends signals from senses (eyes, ears, etc) to CNS
Peripheral Nervous System Motor Division -- 2 Parts
1. Autonomic -- involuntary -- increases heart rate and can make you sweat
2. Somatic -- voluntary -- makes you move
Peripheral Nervous System Autonomic NS -- 2 Parts (involuntary)
1. Sympathetic -- increases activities of major organs (heart rate, breathing, sweating, etc.)
2. Parasympathetic -- slows activities of major organs (opposite of SNS) -- also controls digestion
What would happen to
your nerves if a
mosquito landed on your arm?
1. Your skin would send a signal to your spinal cord.
2. Your spinal cord would send the information to your brain.
3. Your brain would send the response back to the spinal cord.
4. Your spinal cord controls movement and causes you to slap your arm.
What would happen to your nerves if you smelled something very bad?
1. Your nose would send a signal to your brain.
2. Your brain would send its response to your spinal cord.
3. Your spinal cord would cause you to pinch your nose closed.
