/I y u Raise Me Up was composed by Rolf L ~ v l a n d

a very successful and internationally regardedNorwegian composer. Born in Kristiansand, in

southern Norway, he formed his first band at the early ageof nine before studying music at the Music Conservatory inKristiansand and receiving his Masters degree in music atthe Norwegian Institute o Music in Oslo. He then becameone o Norway's most successful popular songwriters,earning a Norwegian Grammy Award and completing more

than sixty national hits. He was also a two-time winnerof the international Eurovision Song Contest in 1985and 1995, and a four-time winner o Norway's EurovisionSong Contest.

Together with the Irish violinist Fionuala Sherry, heformed the group Secret Garden, combining a mixtureof Nordic, Celtic and New Age music and sounds. Theirdebut album in 1996, Songs From A Secret Garden becamean immediate best-seller in Norway and internationally.Subsequent albums provided L ~ v l a n dthe freedom toexplore a wide musical landscape of sounds.

L ~ v l a n dthe group's composer, producer andkeyboardist, originally wrote You Raise Me Up asan instrumental piece and titled it Silent Story. Themelody is based on fragments o the traditional Irish tuneLondonderry Air, which is best known as the melody of

the 1910 song Danny Boy. ~ vland eventually approachedIrish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to writewords to the song. Graham's books The Whitest Flower andThe Element of Fire his two best-selling novels, had

inspired both Rolf L ~ v l a n dand Fionuala Sherry. Brendanimmediately heard a story upon hearing the melody andproceeded to write lyrics titled You Raise Me Up, drawinginspiration from his first book, The Whitest Flower.

Originally released on the 2001 Secret Garden album,Once in a ed Moon with the vocals sung by Irish singerBrian Kennedy, You Raise Me Up quickly becamepopular in both Ireland and Norway. Also recorded byDaniel O'Donnell in 2003, his recording became well

known throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom.In 2003, Josh Groban was chosen by David Fosterto record it, establishing Groban's career and thetremendous popularity o the song in the United Statesand internationally. Groban's recording was nominatedfor a 2005 Grammy award, and he sang it in many highprofile events, including his appearances at Super BowlXXXVIII, in a special NASA commemoration for thecrew of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and withthe African Children's Choir on television shows. Heardin numerous versions throughout the world, the song

was nominated for the Gospel Music Awards four times,including Song of the Year. Additionally, the versionby the Christian group Selah went to No. 1 on Billboard'sChristian Charts.

The arrangement provided here is in the spirit o theoriginal release, with the violin slowly sounding themelody reminiscent o an Irish air This inspirational gemshould be fully expressed in performance with carefulattention to word rhythms, phrasing and dynamics.
