Cholesterol is a fat, which occurs naturally in the body. In fact there is only one cholesterol, even though we talk about good and bad cholesterol. Because good cholesterol (HDL

cholesterol) helps remove excess cholesterol from the body it is referred to as “good”. Bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) transports cholesterol to all the cells in the body. What cells cannot use remains in the circulation and, if present in high amounts, can be deposited.

Hence the name “bad”.

Five tips to control your cholesterol level

2. Also include oats and barley in your diet

1. Eat less saturated fat

Providing you are not allergic to gluten, you will benefit from the béta-glucans in oats (bran) and barley (bran), 3 g per day is recommended.

Replace red meat, full fat dairy produce and palm oil with poultry, fish, low fat dairy produce (low fat milk and yoghurt) and olive oil.
