CarBuzz.com Mazda Patents Active Wing That Stows Onto The Rear Tail Lights

by Gabe Beita Kiser

The best part? This patent is a hint that an RX reveal is around the corner. It’s time to celebrate the under-appreciated design talent at Mazda once again because the small Japanese automaker has just filed a patent to the US Patent and Trademark Office that leads us to conclude it cares a lot about the enthusiasts. The concept itself isn’t anything new, amounting to an active rear wing that increases downforce but can be hidden away for sleeker aesthetics and speedenabling aerodynamics, but it’s the way thhas made the mechanism work that stands out. What’s different about Mazda’s wing is the way it’s stowed when not deployed. In a downward position, the wing hides in the space just on top of the tail lights. Though the wing runs the length of the slopes downwards at the edges, partially blocking the tail lights, it’s thin enough that it presumably does not impede on the legality of the car. Like a standard piece of active aerodynamic equipment, the wing extends outwards and moves up ever soa motorized arm, effectively adding length to the car to add stabilization and increase downforce. The invention itself is split into two patents, one that covers the active wing and another that protects Mazda’s method of stowing the wing.

What’s different about Mazda’s wing is the way it’s stowed when not deployed. In a downward position, the wing hides in the space just on top of the tail lights. Though the wing runs the length of the car and slopes downwards at the edges, partially blocking the tail lights, it’s thin enough that it presumably does not impede on the legality of the car. As awesome as it looks, its why we’re so excited about the wing. What gets the imagination churning is to try and think about what car Mazda will use it on. It’s not likely to be an extra toy for the MX-5 Miata. President’s Corner – October 2017 My motto for the year has been ‘move the club forward’. We have another chance to do that in the November meeting when we elect officers and confirm positions for the coming year. At this time there is a nominee for each position in the club. In the non-elected positions, Kate Koch has agreed to continue as club historian, Mike and Brenda Fisher want to continue as membership directors, John Ness will continue as photographer, Jim Hayter has agreed to oversee the website and Laurie Block has volunteered to be newsletter editor. Many thanks to these members for their willingness to contribute to the club in this way. In the elected positions, we have three nominees. Bill Koch has agreed to run for treasurer, Craig Duplain is the nominee for secretary and Barb Poindexter has volunteered to be president for 2018. These members also deserve our thanks. To be clear, all positions are still open for other nominees through the November meeting. In fact, the social director position is still unfilled and is an elected position according to the constitution. Those duties include overseeing all of the club events and keeping them on track. While new people have come forward to take on leadership positions in the club, we will be saying ‘thank you’ for a job well done to three special people who are leaving their positions. For years, Bob Kincer, Carl Cooper, and Chris Riner have contributed greatly to the club in their respective areas. Bob has been treasurer for a decade and club finances could not have been in better hands. Chris has edited and published the club newsletter for the same period of time and made it the focal point it is today. Carl has provided organization and entertainment at meetings through handling nametags and the 50/50 drawing. So, I want to say a special ‘thank you’ to these three. I urge every member to come to the November meeting, vote and greet the new officer team for 2018. Dave Edwards

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING I know it is only the beginning of September but I heard from the Salvation Army today regarding the BMC volunteering for their annual bell ringing. So, the BMC will be responsible for the bell ringing at Cabellas at Polaris on Saturday, December 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. As we have in the past. We will do two hour shifts. 10:00 am to Noon Noon to 2 pm 2 pm to 4 pm 4 pm to 6 pm Jerry and I will definitely sign up for one of the shifts. How about you? Can you commit to one of the shifts? This is a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and to give back for all the many blessings we enjoy all year long. If you wish to volunteer, just let me, Jane Nieman, know. If you want to wait until closer to the time, I definitely understand. I just wanted to put it out there so I would not forget. Blessings to all, Jane

Buckeye Miata Club Car Talk and Coffee 2017 - 2018

BMC Members and Friends Unfortunately winter will be soon upon us and like me, many of you are making plans to put your Miata to sleep for the winter. To get us through the cold weather we are planning another round of BMC Car Talk sessions. It's not the same as driving your Miata…....but we can at least we can talk about cars. We have put together a schedule for six Saturday morning sessions to get together to informally talk cars. Invite your friends. What is it? BMC Car Talk and Coffee is simply a chance to get out of the house on cold winter mornings, have a cup of coffee and breakfast, and talk about our Miata’s and cars in general. The gatherings are open to BMC members and their friends. Discussions are very informal and seem to include topics including, but not limited to, the latest sports car news, performance tires, suspensions, exhaust systems, detailing etc. We would certainly like to have outside subject matter experts if you know of someone that would come to one of the sessions and impart some knowledge. Over the years this has gravitated into pretty much a “guy” event but my wife Kathy will be glad to attend and have coffee and breakfast with the significant others if you let her know you are coming. When is it? Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 AM to about 10:30 or 11:00AM. Come and go as you please. This year’s schedule is: November 18 January 13 January 27 February 10 February 24 March 10 Where is it? La Chatelaine Bakery 65 W. Bridge St. SR 161 Dublin Ohio (There is plenty of parking in the back. As you enter the front door our meeting area is generally in a separate room behind the curtain to your left. Grab some coffee and breakfast and come on back.) If you have any questions or suggestions contact Kevin Rhodes 614-406-6069 [email protected]

CarBuzz.com The Mazda MX-5's Retro Cousin Will Be Overhauled In 2018

by James Allen

It's of common knowledge that, if you're planning on using someone else's chassis to base your new sports car on, you can't go far wrong with a Mazda MX-5. With one of the finest-balanced setups at this end of the market, the current incarnation of the MX-5 in particular is a great platform to build on - as Fiat and Abarth have already found with their 124 Spider variants. Soon, though, another Mazda MX-5-based roadster will be released, by none other than the quirky Japanese car maker that is Mitsuoka. According to the spokespeople we've been chatting with, the Mk 4 MX-5-based Mitsuoka Roadster is due for release sometime in 2018, with the donor car's transmission options and 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine set to be carried over to the Mitsuoka. It was also confirmed that the hand-crafted exterior won't be a drastic evolution over the current car's bodywork - so expect an aesthetic to be reminiscent of a Morgan Aero 8 that's been left in the tumble dryer for too long. That said, the changes that have been made will follow function over form. For instance, whereas the current Mitsuoka Roadster has fake hood vents, the 2018 car will have legit ones. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the new Mitsuoka Roadster we were able to ascertain, though, was that the car likely won't be exclusively available as a soft-top. Allegedly, a Mitsuoka Roadster variant based on the Mazda MX-5 RF, complete with that car's folding hard top roof, is being considered. Though the representatives we spoke to did stress nothing had been confirmed, the strong and respectful working relationship Mazda and Mitsuoka have with each other does increase the likelihood of an RF-based Mitsuoka being green-lit at some point. Not that it'll mean much for us here in the States, considering Mitsuoka won't be selling any Roadster variant here.
