Queridos Hermanos,

El otro día alguien me preguntó lo que haría si me ganan a millones de dólares en la lotería. Después de asegurarle que esto nunca sucedería, ya que nunca compro boletos, en broma le conteste: “¡junto mis ganancias y me desaparezco!” Aunque mi respuesta era en broma, me hizo pensar porque me vino a la mente el desaparecer. ¿Acaso hay n egoísmo dentro de mi—dentro de todos nosotros—que nos causará a olvidar amistades y relaciones simplemente para no compartir mis ganancias? ¿Porque hemos hecho del dinero—algo creado para darnos cierta seguridad—en algo tan poderoso? ¿Qué tiene el dinero que nos puede tentarnos a abandonar incluso lo más sagrado por tal de obtenerlo?

Creo que todos estamos de acuerdo que el dinero nunca sale sobrando y no tiene nada de malo desear la comodidad y seguridad que el dinero ofrece. Hasta la Iglesia depende de nuestra generosidad para sobrevivir. Pero, cuando nos obsesionamos por alcanzar el éxito financiero—cuando caemos en el pecado de la avaricia—es cuando reemplazamos el amor de Dios por algo que nunca nos podrá amar. Jesús hoy nos advierte: “Nadie puede servir a dos amos, pues odiarás a uno y amarás al otro, o te apegarás al primero y despreciarás al segundo. No puedes servir a Dios y al dinero” (Lc 16:13). Es necesario adquirir, administrar y usar sabiamente los dones de este mundo, pero, nada puede reemplazar el amor y el servicio que le pertenece a Dios. Todo lo que tenemos y somos es gracias a Dios y su Divina Gracia. Incluso en nuestros tiempos de necesidad, es el amor de Dios el cual nos fortalece a seguir adelante.

Es muy fácil caer en el pecado de la avaricia, así que debemos ser vigilantes a no caer en el deseo por el exceso. Jesús no nos llama a ser mayordomos irresponsables que nunca piensan en el mañana o que cree que Dios desaparecerá mágicamente nuestras necesidades. Pero, tenemos que tener cuidado de que en la administración de nuestros bienes no terminemos obsesionado por las posesiones. La práctica espiritual antigua del diezmo nos enseñaba a combatir la avaricia con la generosidad y el desapego. Pero, a causa del egoísmo moderno, hemos hecho a un lado esta noble practica y optamos por ofrecerle a la Iglesia lo menos que se pueda. Si realmente

creemos que somos un pueblo encomendado a Dios y su providencia, entonces tenemos que confiar más plenamente en Él. Veamos nuestro presupuesto y hagamos estas preguntas: ¿Veo las necesidades de la Iglesia como una prioridad? ¿Qué tanto del tesoro que Dios me dio me gasto egoísta o innecesariamente? ¿Acepto con un corazón generoso mi responsabilidad de mantener y apoyar a mi Iglesia y a proveer por los más necesitados?

Brothers and Sisters,

The other day someone asked me what would I do if I hit the lottery and won millions of dollars. After telling him that this would never happen, since I never buy lottery tickets, I jokingly said: “I’d claim my winnings and disappear the next morning!” Although I knew that I wasn’t serious, it has made me wonder where this answer came from. Is there a deep-seeded selfishness within me—within all of us—that would force me to forget all the relationships I have made simply so I wouldn't have to share my winnings? Why have we made money—a means of providing for necessities and security—into something so powerful? Why is the desire to posses money able to tempt us away from everything, even what we hold most sacred?

The truth is that we can all use a bit more cash, and there’s nothing wrong with desiring the comfort and security that money provides. After all, even the Church depends on our generous support in order to survive. But, when the pursuit of wealth becomes an obsession—when the sin of greed is the only focus in our lives—then, we choose to replace God’s love for some thing that could never truly love us. Jesus today warns us: “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Lk 16:13). While we can acquire and administer the bounty of this world, nothing can ever replace the love and service that is due to God. All that we have, and all that we are, is due to God’s grace working in our lives. Even in our times of scarcity and need, it is through God’s love that we have the courage to forge ahead and not give up.

It is very easy to fall into the sin greed, and so we must be vigilant that we not fall prey to being consumed with the desire of obtaining more and more. Jesus doesn’t call us to be irresponsible stewards who never think of tomorrow or believing that God will magically make our troubles disappear. But, we must be careful that the administration of our gifts doesn’t become an obsession for possessions. The ancient spiritual practice of tithing taught people to temper greed with detachment and generosity. But perhaps due to our modern selfishness, we have decided to do away with this noble practice and, rather, choose to give to the Church as our priorities allow us. As a people entrusted to God’s providence, perhaps it’s time that we truly trust in Him. Let us look at our budgets and ask ourselves: do I see the Church and her needs as a priority? How much of God’s treasure do I selfishly or unnecessarily waste? Do I accept with a generous heart my responsibility to support my Church and to helping those in real need?

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mercy is one thing, malpractice quite another. Why, then, does the defrauded master in Jesus’ parable praise the devious steward? Jesus shows by example how to sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources, indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No matter how costly such service, or how minimal the return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a reward that is literally out of this world. For Amos and Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical charity toward our neighbor. Paul, too, declares that the only worship acceptable to God is offered by a community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to life, “lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument” (1 Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to live as “children of light,” as devoted to self-sacrificing service as “the children of this world” (Luke 16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God’s kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring treasures. —Peter Scagnelli,

Our Call to Stewardship Twenty-fi h Sunday in

Ordinary Time

In Jesus’ parable of the Unjust Steward, we encounter a financial manager who has wasted his master’s wealth and faces dismissal from his posi on. To overcome the crisis confron ng him, the steward reduces some very considerable debts owed by poor neighbors to his master in order to help them out. Though the steward has sinned against God and his master by squandering what belongs to someone else, both the prudent way in which he goes about resolving the crisis coupled with relieving people who are in need can be seen as a way to be er steward the gi s entrusted to us by God. Although good stewards today acknowledge that they may never use their God-given gi s in a way that completely conforms to the demands of the Gospel, a commitment to using their gi s with prudence and for the purpose of helping their neighbors wins God’s favor.

Know Your Faith Does Hell Really Exist?

It is very common to hear people say that either there is no hell or that, if hell does exist, no one is in it. After all, how can a loving a forgiving God allow anyone go to hell? The truth is that hell is a very real place and we can very easily end up there! In Scripture we see that Jesus spoke more about hell (Gehenna, the lake of fire, the place where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth) than He did about heaven. Church Teachings has always firmly affirmed the existence of an eternal place away of God’s presence (CCC 1035). So while hell is a very real place, God doesn’t send anyone to hell (CCC 1037), rather, we ourselves are given the freedom to choose our eternal destiny. By choosing to ignore God’s law, and to live with unrepentant mortal sin, we are essentially choosing to spend our eternity in hell. Don’t forget that life is short! Take time every day to examine your life. Where would you like to make your eternal reservation? Do you prefer a smoking or a non-smoking room?

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia XXV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

La misericordia es una cosa y la negligencia otra muy diferente. ¿Por qué, entonces, el patrón robado en la parábola de Jesús reconoce a su trabajador hábil en los negocios? Jesús muestra con un ejemplo cómo santificar los bienes materiales: poniendo todos nuestros recursos, aún nosotros mismos, al servicio de nuestros prójimos. No importa que tan costoso ese servicio, o lo poco que podamos recibir a cambio, esa obra de caridad es la inversión más inteligente, que ofrece una recompensa que literalmente está más allá de este mundo. Para Amos y Jesús, la verdadera adoración a Dios exige obras de caridad útiles hacia nuestro prójimo. Pablo también expresa que la única adoración aceptable a Dios es la que se ofrece por una comunidad rica en caridad. La liturgia debe relacionarse con la vida “levantando al cielo sus manos puras, libre de odios y divisiones” (1 Timoteo 2:8). Este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia nos desafía a vivir como “hijos de la luz” —con dedicado servicio abnegado— tan entusiasmados por el Reino de Dios de justicia pero menos por los tesoros pasajeros; así como los “hijos de este mundo” se sirven a ellos mismos (Lucas 16:8).

El Llamado a la Corresponsabilidad XXV Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

En la parábola de Jesús del Administrador Injusto, nosotros encontramos un administrador de finanzas que ha derrochado la riqueza de su patrón y enfrenta el despido de su puesto. Para superar la crisis que le confronta, el administrador reduce algunas deudas muy considerables que los vecinos pobres deben a su patrón, para ayudarles a saldar la deuda. Aunque el administrador ha pecado contra Dios y contra su patrón derrochando lo que pertenece a alguien más, la manera prudente en la que él va resolviendo la crisis y al mismo empo aliviando a la gente en necesidad, puede verse como una manera de administrar mejor los dones confiados a nosotros por Dios. Aunque los buenos corresponsables de hoy reconocen que tal vez nunca usen sus dones dados por Dios en una manera que se conforme completamente a las demandas del Evangelio, el compromiso de usar sus dones con prudencia y con el propósito de ayudar a su prójimo conquista el favor de Dios.

Conoce Tu Fe ¿Realmente Existe el Infierno?

Es una idea común el creer que el infierno no existe, o que si existe no hay nadie allí, ya que nuestro Dios amoroso nunca permitiría que alguien se condene. ¡La verdad es de que el infierno realmente existe y, si no tenemos cuidado, podríamos terminar viviendo la eternidad allí! En las escrituras podemos ver que Jesús habla más sobre el infierno (Gehena, el lago de fuego, el lugar de llanto y rechinar de dientes) que del cielo. Las Enseñanzas de la Iglesia siempre han afirmado la existencia de un lugar eterno apartado de la presencia de Dios (CCC 1035). Pero aunque el infierno realmente existe, Dios nunca condena a nadie a ese lugar (CCC 1037). Nosotros tenemos la libertad de escoger cual será nuestro destino eterno. Al escoger ignorar la ley de Dios y vivir en el pecado, estamos en realidad escogiendo el infierno como nuestra morada eterna. ¡No olvidemos lo corto que es la vida, y tomemos tiempo todos los días para examinar nuestras vidas! ¿Dónde prefieres tener tu reservación eterna? Tú decides, ¿fresco o calientito?
