October 2014

Transforming society to respect and protect all innocent human life.

L ate in the evening on September 10, long after the halls had emptied of hundreds who came to lobby for life, the Missouri legislature gave final approval to override Governor Nixon's vetoes of two pro-life bills and one line item veto of a budget

increase for Missouri's Alternatives to Abortion Program. To shut down a filibuster by pro-abortion members, the senate used the rare procedural maneuver of calling the previous question.

The override of House Bill 1307 was passed with strong bipartisan support by votes of 117 to 44 in the House and by 23 to 7 in the Senate. The override of House Bill 1132 also received bipartisan support and was passed in the House by 123 to 36 and in the Senate by 27 to 2. The line item veto was overridden by a vote of 120 to 36 in the House and a vote of 28 to 1 in the Senate.

House Bill 1307 increases the time of reflection after counseling from 24 hours to 72 hours before an abortion can be performed. This reflection time gives a woman time to con-template her situation, research information about the dangers and consequences of abor-tion, and review the help and resources that are available to her through the alternatives to abortion program and other sources.

House Bill 1132 increases the maximum funding available for pregnancy resource cen-ters and maternity homes through tax credits. As abortions continue to decrease, more and more women are choosing life and are in need of help and services. This increase in available funds for tax credits will help provide those services.

These bills work together to protect the women of Missouri and ensure that in this matter of life and death, they don't make a decision that will have a detrimental effect on them -- both physically and emotionally. Pro-lifers across Missouri are so thankful and pleased that these bills are going into effect.

Missouri Right to Life thanks the spon-sors of these bills. We thank all the legislators who voted for these bills and for the over-rides. We are especially grateful to Speaker of the House Tim Jones and to President Pro Tem of the Senate Tom Dempsey.

Missouri Right to Life PAC played an active role in nine August primary races and is pleased that candidates in all nine targeted races emerged victorious!

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson: don’t vote for “ripping fetuses out of their mother’s womb”

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson is a conservative Christian who tells it like it is, and he has been unashamed in the past to put his pro-life views front and center. Now, the reality television star has a new message: Don’t vote for pro-abortion candidates or politicians.

Here’s what he had to say:There are about 90 to 100

million of us who claim Jesus. The problem is only half of you register to vote and out of the half of you that registers to vote, only half of that group actually goes and votes...

Therefore, when you’re looking up there and griping and complaining about what you see in Washington, D.C., you might as well shut up. The reason they’re there is we’re putting

in the

them there. If you don’t get any-thing else out of this, remember this — register to vote for crying out loud...

If the dude or woman is for ripping human fetuses out of their mother’s womb, don’t ever vote for that. Don’t ever say ‘yes’ to that. It’s terrible.

... Phil is a strong supporter of the pro-life movement. Phil’s son Willie shows his love for children by being an adoptive father. Willie has a video clip posted on Youtube in which he speaks about the benefits of being an adop-tive father. The video has over a quarter million views. I was personally touched by the fact that they chose to adopt a biracial son, Will. Recently Willie and his wife Korie took in an exchange student from Taiwan named Rebecca. They fell in love with her and Rebecca is now part of the Robertson family.

Artist exposes female sex-selective abortions

To raise awareness about male gender preference and female sex-selective abortion wreaking havoc on demographics in China and India, French sculptor Prune Nourry created a huge exhibit of clay sculptures of Chinese girls.

The exhibit, on display at the China Institute in New York City, is called Terracotta Daughters. The display looks like an army of Chinese girls. It pays homage to the daughters lost to sex-selective abortions, and Nourry’s focus was on girls from the deep countryside of China, where sex-selective abortions on girls are at their highest numbers.

In an interview with CNN, Nourry said, “Terracotta Daughters is about sex-selective abortions in India and China, which are one-third of the world’s

population. There is this huge imbalance between boys and girls. So I created this army as a kind of symbol.”

Nourry points out that in 2030, Chinese men will be virtually unable to find brides due to the literal eradication of the Chinese female.

We Like Women and Babies Too!

On September 10, two diverse groups converged on the Missouri Capitol, both with supposedly the same goal - to protect Missouri women.

A small group of Planned Parenthood supporters in purple shirts gathered on the Capitol steps calling for opposition to the override of Gov. Nixon’s veto of the 72-hour reflection period. They held signs which said “Protect Missouri Women.”

Hundreds of Missouri Right to Life members and other groups supporting the override filled the Capitol rotunda in a sea of red shirts calling out, “We like women, yes we do. We like women, how about you?” Post-abortive women and those conceived in rape rallied the crowd with their personal witness of how abortion hurts women, calling for the increased reflection period.

But which group is truly interested in protecting women?

In the book Complications: Abortion’s Impact on Women, authors Angela Lanfranchi, Ian Gentles, and Elizabeth Ring-Cassidy document the devastating impact of induced abortion on women. After several years of intense and rigorous research, the authors outline their findings that abortion harms women physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually.

The authors present evidence that the link between abortion and breast cancer is incontrovertible with 56 studies showing a positive association. The book also documents immediate physical risks of abortion from injury, including perforation of the uterus, and infections - and subsequent problems such as miscarriage, placenta previa, infertility, and premature births.

Several large studies indicate a significantly higher maternal mortality from induced abortion than from childbirth. The psychological impact of abortion includes much higher rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. Post-abortive women are also more likely to contract autoimmune diseases.

Chemical abortions too are associated with various risks including fetal malformations in later pregnancies, fatal toxic shock syndrome, hemorrhages, and ectopic pregnancies. The overall failure rate of chemical abortions is at least four percent with some studies suggesting a failure rate as high as 80 percent.

World-wide studies show that sex-selective abortions overwhelmingly target baby girls. These sex-selective abortions have resulted in the loss of over 160 million girls, leaving an imbalance in the population of some countries, like China and India, that puts the remaining women at risk of sex abuse and sex trafficking.

Those in the purple shirts called for women to have less time to consider all of these risks. How can that protect women? As for those of us in red:

“We like women, yes we do. We like women and babies, too!”

Help carry one another’s burdens; in that way you will fulfill the law of Christ. ~Galatians 6:2
