Someone asks you to make something for them. Where do you start?

It doesn’t start with the software you are using or how much money they want to spend. It all starts with single simple question.

Why?

This is not a motor

This is a combination of components designed to perform in a violent symphony of fIre and metal.

A person builds something because they feel it is needed. They use the best parts available within their budget to get a desired result. It doesn’t matter if it is a car or a website, the process is the same.

Some assembly required

The phrase “if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself” still applies. You might need to send out the block for machine work as you would hire an illustrator, but your vision is best assembled by your own hand.

IF it doesn’t make it go faster or stop better, we don’t need it

Here is your design brief from the client, seems pretty simple at first. That is until you come to the details. Do they care that a Chevy engine is in a Ford body? Maybe they hate helvetica. You don’t know until you communicate and ask questions.

You will never look as cool as you will driving a chopped caddy

Isn’t that what we all want? A finished product that makes us look good when we use it AND makes us look amazing because we are the designer.

where can I buy one of these?

Make the project yours, make it unique, make it special, but most importantly make it so that if someone else wants one, they have to come to you.

it Looks like pretty standard equipment to me.

“It looks amazing, but what did you do to it?” They know something is different about the car, but it all looks like it could be factory parts. No detail can be left out, the project must be built as a whole system, not polished pieces.

No one rides for free

Design talent is often overlooked and underpaid. My knowledge of mechanics is just as valuable as my knowledge of design applications. If you come to me with a problem, I will give you my complete unedited opinion. If you want me to fix your problem for free just because I know how to, go kick rocks.

I build everything to be used to its full potential. What good is a project if it breaks after a few hours? I test it, I break it, then I fix it.

With the things we create, we also begin branding ourselves. What I do with these things I build will define me as an artist. For better or worse my brand will be seen, shared and hopefully embraced.
