Welcome/Introduction Mary McDonough, FHWAThe Team Leader for Roadway Departure in FHWA’s Office of Safety Design, Mary will briefly present an update on recent developments on the Focused Approach and safety initiatives for Roadway Departure, Intersections and Speed Management. (10 minutes)

The following presenters will each have 30 minutes (including 10 minutes for Q&A):

Ready to Rumble? (Design guidance for the application of shoulder and centerline rumble strips)      Darren Torbic, MRI Darren Torbic is the Senior Traffic Engineer for the Midwest Research Institute (MRI), State College, PA. His design guidance on shoulder and centerline rumble strips is related to a research project focused on mitigating impacts, including noise and safety for road users and nearby residents.

Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 – Crossing Safety and Trespass Prevention Ronald Ries, FRA Division Director for Crossing Safety & Trespass Prevention with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Ron will discuss required actions resulting from the October 2008 Act which relate to road and intersection safety, specifically provisions that impact the Highway-Rail Crossing program and rail crossing and rail property trespass safety.

Traffic Calming on Main Roads ThroughRural Communities Shauna Hallmark, CTREShauna is an associate professor of civil engineering with the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State University. She will discuss results and solutions from an FHWA-funded project regarding speed management problems common to many small towns in rural America, including slowing traffic to safe speeds through towns of less than a mile in length, with children, elderly, bicyclists and pedestrians using the same roadway.
