As we conclude this year, Orange Grove Primary students have learned a great deal about the traits necessary to exhibit good character. Focusing on the six character traits, students are able to apply what they have learned throughout their life. Responsibil-ity, Respect, Trustworthiness, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship are traits that are recognized around the world. Let us continue to encourage our young peo-ple to display these traits on a daily basis and be productive citizens in our community. Remember, CHARACTER is how you live your life when no-body is looking. Students, who were chosen by their teacher for dis-playing the most FAIRNESS throughout the fifth six weeks, joined the Lunch Bunch Group and ate lunch in my classroom. The first grade students were Isabella Gonzalez, Charles Garcia, Vanshi Bhakta, Alejandra Aguilar, Kayla Carbajal, Jeremiah Salinas, and Hannah Graves. Kindergarten students who were chosen are Jude Thomas, Beau Smith, Delexsus Cavazos, Tyler Franke, Jayden Vasquez, Gabrielle Garcia, and Emma Rosales We will continue to applaud all students who work hard and continuously display incredible character at home, school, and community.

The first graders are winding down their year and get- ting ready for summer. The teachers just completed administering the Texas Primary Read-ing Inventory, please make sure you get with your child’s teacher to discuss their performance. We had a fantastic time at our Family Literacy Night and Book Fair. Thank you to everyone who came and supported the Primary Read-ing Night and Book Fair. The first grade teachers have really enjoyed this year with their students. We are extremely proud of the pro-gress that they have made and encourage them to continue read-ing over the summer. Please contact your child’s teacher for more helpful tips to continue their academic success over the summer. Thank you once again for all of your hard work and cooperation

this year in helping your child accomplish his or her academic goals.

Pre-Kinder News It’s hard to believe that this year is almost over. Time does fly when you’re having FUN learning! As we come to the end of the year, there are a lot of exciting events approaching. We will be having our Pre-K Awards Assem-bly Tuesday, May 26th in the Primary Cafeteria at 9:00. Other events we are looking forward to is Pre-K’s Fun Day on Wednesday, May 20th. In this last six weeks of Pre-K we will review letter recognition, syllables, rhyming, beginning sounds, and the numbers 0-10 for the end of year as-sessments. As this school year concludes, we would like to extend our sin-cere appreciation to our Pre-K parents for their support and cooperation in extending their child’s learning at home. Please look out for our “Summer

Survival Skills” packet that will be sent home for summer practice. Thanks again and have a wonderful summer!

Kindergarten Kids The kindergarten children have come a long way this year. They are reading, writing, and doing simple addition and subtraction prob-lems with manipulatives. We have children who are already finding new interests that may carry them into adulthood. There are future authors, illustrators, mathematicians and scientists. Easter brought an opportunity for literature, creative writing and lots of crafts. We celebrated with a grade level egg hunt, classroom confetti egg cracking and parties. The Easter Bunny even made her yearly visit with each child for pictures. The highlight of this semester was our field trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville to see the play “Sleeping Beauty”. It was a big hit, especially for those who had never had the chance to see a live performance before. We had prepared for the trip by discussing

fairy tales and reading “Sleeping Beauty”. We are ending the year units on sea animals, insects and spiders. They have also enjoyed this experience. Kids and animals of all kinds just naturally go together. Our comprehensive end-of-the-year testing went well. The kindergartners showed what they’ve learned through the whole year. The Kindergarten staff has enjoyed working with the children and we are always amazed at how much a young child can learn if only given the chance. Your children were great to work with. We are sending home a summer package of skill work to help keep them on track for the beginning of 1st grade. Please continue reading to and with your child and talking with them about the world around them. There is almost no better way to increase their vocabulary than to actually hear it being used and then use it themselves. Have a great summer! See you in the fall!

Preventing the Summer Slide

As much as teachers love summer vacation, there’s always a little (actually, big) panic that sets in as we pack up the classrooms and send our children off during those three lazy months of fun in the sun. What if they never pick up a book? Oh, and they were so close in learning all their math facts- will they forget? We’ve worked so diligently teaching skills and the kids have learned so much—what if when they return in August and they forget? The loss of skills during the summer in the educational world is known as “The Summer Slide” and it is very real. Research indicates that children who live in poverty consistently lose 2 months of reading performance and that those loses accumulate each year during the elementary grades. This means that by middle school a student can be up to 2 ½ years behind! According to research, two-thirds of the 9th grade reading achievement gap can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportuni-ties during the summer months during elementary. Crazy, right? So, what’s the answer? There are many no-cost ways of not only eliminating summer reading loss, but accelerating learning over the summer. We must ensure that our children have books in their hands. Below are a few fun and simple ways to keep our kiddos engaged with learn-ing during the summer. 1. Visit your local library! Help your child find “right fit books. Right fit books are books that are of high interest to your child and are not beyond their reading level. You can use the five finger test to determine if the book is too difficult for your child. Open the book to a page with many words. Have your child begin reading the text. Hold up a finger for each word he/she does not know. If you have 4 or 5 fingers up, the text may be too difficult for your child to read independently. Feel free to still check out the book! It just may be a book you want to read with your child.

2. Be sure your child reads at least 20 minutes a day. According to research, a child who reads only 1 minute a day outside of school will learn 8,000 words by the end of sixth grade where a student who reads 20 minutes outside of school will learn 1,800,000 words! That’s huge! If reading isn’t one of your child’s top priorities, you may need to set up an incentive program. 3. Set a good example. When your child sees you reading and enjoying a book or a newspa-per article, you are sending a message that reading is important and valuable. 4. Read to your child. When you read to your child, he/she hears the rhythm of language. Be sure to read with expression! Changing your voice for the different characters in the story and increasing volume for exciting parts are only a few ways to make reading interesting. 5. Read with your child –explore different types of reading like poetry. For our little ones, poetry is great way to improve phonemic awareness skills as poetry often incorporates rhyme. For our older children, poetry is a means of improving fluency. 6. Read for different purposes. Reading directions for a recipe or directions for assembling a toy are fun ways to incorporating reading. 7. Games with Words. There are tons of ways to have fun learning letters and sight words. 8. If you have an iPad, try downloading a few interactive books. There are also lots of reading games that keep children engaged. 9. Continue to drill Math Facts. There are lots of Math games that keep children engaged. Summer is a time when we should see to it that our children pause for a moment to remember that they are completing another school year. And, while sum-mer brings a momentary end to school, it does not bring an end to their education. Over the past nine months, your children have worked very hard at their studies and learned many things, which they did not know when school began. What they learned was the result of many factors, not the least of which was their effort in studying, writing, practicing, and the hours they put into classes, activities and discussions. Now that the school year has drawn to a close, I hope your children realize that their learning will continue, for all of life is a school, and we learn by everything we do. It is my sincere wish for you and yours that the summer may hold only pleasant experiences.

Bluebonnet Readers THANK YOU MRS. JURECEK FOR OUR T-SHIRTS! WE LOVE THEM AND WILL

WEAR THEM WITH PRIDE!

As our school year 2014-2015 is coming to an end second grade students are taking their end of the year TPRI tests, and benchmarks in Reading and Math. They aim to soar into third grade for another year of learning and fun. We have had won-derful experience of field trips learning the fascinating roles Texas A&M-Kingsville college students play in order to enter-tain others as we watched “Sleeping Beauty!” Students also experienced the wonders of American Indian Tribes and how they lived off of the lands.

Second graders had a wonderful Field Day taking in more than 60 wins among the second grade classes: in long jump, 100 and 200 meter races, ball kick and throw, jump rope teams, sit-up and let’s not forget the energetic sack races. We are proud of our growing athletes. Students have adapted to the fast paced rollercoaster of learning this year has presented to them.

Third Grade Students Finish Strong The third grade students raced to the finish line to reach their AR reading goals. Alto-gether 15 students ended up with 50 to 75 points, 3 finished with 75 to 100 points, and 12 students had well over 100 points. Victo-ria Olivio in Mrs. Farris’ class was the top point getter with a whopping 252 points. Students were awarded with various prizes throughout the year for getting to the differ-ent increments. Teachers are encouraging their students to continue reading over the summer break. This will keep them at the reading level at which they ended the school year. The Orange Grove Intermediate Li-brary will also be hosting a summer reading program entitled “Every Hero Has a Story” throughout the month of June. Teachers are hoping that many of their students will par-ticipate in this worthwhile summer event. It

will from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, June 8 to the 25.

Counselor’s Corner…..By: N. Phillips The 2014-15 school year is nearing

an end at Orange Grove Elementary

& Intermediate. This year has been

a great success and our students

have gained many skills during

classroom guidance lessons to help them develop. These skills included: conflict

management with the help of Kelso’s Choices, Drug Free Awareness, bully aware-

ness, anger management, cultural awareness, test taking skills, decision making and

various others. Grade second through fifth are concluding their school year with

Project Turn Around. This Program has reinforced skills that students have learned

all year in classroom guidance and in their health classes. The experience has been

engaging for our students reviewing skills such as dealing with frustration, be s

good friend, peer pressure and more. The fifth graders are now more prepared to

excel in Jr. High next year and we wish them good luck. We are also looking for-

ward to another successful year at Orange Grove Intermediate & Elementary during

our 2015-16 school year. Until next school year, enjoy your summer and stay

safe!!

Dear Bulldog Family, It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of the year! It seems like just last week that we were starting our new school year. The end of the school year always seems to arrive too quickly. The thoughts of end-of-the-year festivities, summer, and outside activi-ties sometimes can distract us from what’s most important. Your children have come so far in one year, and we are very proud of them. I want to say a special thank you to all our volunteers that helped out this past year. Your help has been greatly appreciated. I would like to wish our fifth graders the best of luck at Junior High next year. Reading over the summer is critical for your child’s success in the fall. Talking to your child about books also improves your child’s reading comprehension. Possible questions you can ask include: What has happened so far in the book? What do you think the character will do next and why? What is the problem in the story and how is it getting solved? In fact, the more you engage your child in meaningful conversation in general, the more he or she will improve his/her thinking. If your child is not an eager reader, encourage ANY reading – comic books, sports statistics, joke books, or magazines. Taking turns reading or listening to a parent read aloud develops vocabulary as well as a love of reading. I really enjoy being principal at Orange Grove Intermediate and am already looking forward to our next year together! Best Summer Wishes, Dr. Stephanie Ashworth

Thank you to the Jim Wells County Extension Agency and the 4-H clubs for hosting the Ag Fair

Days. We had a “Moo”v elous time!

Fourth grade math students selected numbers and pre-sented projects pertaining to their number Abe Lincoln as 16, and magic number 7 Ro-bot!

Track Winners take time to smile for the camera after the Interme-diate Track and field day. Thanks for a great time Coaches!

Counselor’s Corner Mrs. Warren

The 2014-15 school year is quickly coming to an end. We recently had 5th Grade Orientation and were able to visit with our incoming 6th graders for the 2015-16 school year. We discussed such things as dress code, electives, etc… We are looking forward to seeing our new 6th graders, as well as all our returning stu-dents, in August. A letter will be sent out during the summer to notify students and parents of the date we will be handing out class schedules for next year. We wish all our students, and their families, a fun, restful, and above all else, SAFE summer! As always, we encourage parents to provide learning opportunities for their children throughout the summer months.

The Orange Grove Junior High Honors Band participated in the Director’s Choice Music Festival on May 2, 2015 at Boerne Champion High School in Boerne, TX. They received Superior Ratings from all three judges and were also awarded Best in Class!!! Congratulations on a job well done!!!

This is the Or-ange Grove JH Choir after returning from UIL Concert & Sight Reading Competi-tion. For the first time ever in Orange Grove JH Choir History, they brought home a Supe-rior rating which is the highest rating a choir can re-ceive.

Orange Grove Junior High Principal’s Message

Orange Grove Junior High has had an eventful end of the year as teachers and students completed projects, trips, band concerts and choir concerts. So many of our students were successful in their spring competitions as they represented OGJH well in numerous events. With the end of the school year just a few weeks away students and teachers are waiting for STAAR results. Our 8th graders first took their STAAR exams in early April. These results have come in and our students have had good results. We are anxiously awaiting the remainder of our students’ STAAR results for grades 6th, 7th and 8th. Our campus with the help of Volunteers in Pub-lic Schools (VIPS), teachers and staff members hosted our second attendance incentive social for our students that met 95% attendance goal for the school year on May 15. The OGJH randomly awarded students with some really awe-some prizes if they reach a 95% individual attendance for the year. These students also ate pizza and other snacks through out the afternoon as they played games and listened to music. Please stay updated with our Orange Grove Junior High webpage for the 2015-2016 school year updates. Posted very soon you will find a school supply list, dress code updates and important days. We want to wish our parents and their children a relaxing and safe summer! We thank you for your endless support and dedication to our students and school.

Ask any fifth grader what they are most looking forward to in Jr. High and you will hear a resounding “LOCKERS!” Fifth graders met with administrators at the Jr. High campus on May 15th to learn all about their sixth grade year. Also, our band directors were by the individual 5th grade classrooms on the 11th to discuss the band drive and give students information about the music program in Jr. High. Students are excited about band, lockers, choir, classes, and lunch in their new school. We have been working on our mythology unit and media lit-eracy in ELAR classes and constellations in science. Math classes are ending with a review of division and fractions. Other great memories of this year include a field trip to the Corpus Christi Science and History Museum, Track and Field Day, holidays shared with classmates, playing “star wars” in P.E., and of course their fantastic teachers! Teachers, of course, are looking forward to a little rest and relaxation this summer, but admit that they experi-ence mixed emotions as they send this wonderful group of students on to Junior High. Good luck boys and girls as you journey into the next stage of your life!

FCCLA National Convention is right around the corner for several FCCLA stu-dents. WE are very proud and honored to be having 5 teams compete for medals at the National level. We wish them the best of luck!

Hannah Brock, Gabby Sanchez, and Callie Andersen will be attending June Leadership on June 7-12 in Navasota, Texas. Here they will learn more about their new office teams and the office they were elected to. This will be a great learning experience for these girls and hopefully they make new friends and memories!

Our 2015 end of the year banquet was a great success! We had a huge turnout this year with everyone enjoying the finger foods and good company. All of the FCCLA’s members, officers, and parents were recognized for all of their hard work and achievements this year. We also awarded 3 of our seniors who have been outstanding members throughout their high school years with scholarships: Mattea Rodriguez, Haley Allison, and Jemma Shumake. Thank you everyone for all of the help this year and we can’t wait to get started for next school year!

Our FCCLA members were invited to help the intermediate and elementary stu-dents with their Annual Track and Field Day. Several of our members took time out of their day to got to the track to count sit-ups, jump ropes, and hand out 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place ribbons to all the winners. Some also helped with long jump, ball throw, soccer kick, and sack races. Our FCCLA members had a blast helping out with the younger kids and we can’t wait to help again next year!

VARSITY SOFTBALL - DEEP INTO PLAYOFFS! ! The 2015 Orange Grove Varsity Softball team has made it to the playoffs again this year after making it to the Regional Quarterfinals last year. The Lady Bulldogs beat Rio Hondo in two games to become Bi-District Champions and then defeated Pear-sall in one game to take the Area championship. On May 14th the ladies traveled to San Antonio to take on Devine, a repeat from 2014, in the Regional Quarterfinals in a 3game series. The Lady Bulldogs won the first game of the series 10-2. It was a great team effort. Mckenzie Hahn, sophomore, played an outstanding game at short-stop and went 1 for 5 at bats with a great bunt and scored one run. Ashlyn Hes-

seltine, sophomore, was 2 for 5 at the plate, scored twice, and brought in 2 runs. Hannah Halepaska, junior pitcher, struck out 8 Devine batters, got 4 hits, crossed the plate once and had 3 RBI’s. Bea Lara, freshman catcher, did a superb job behind the plate. Lara had 3 hits, scored once and had 1 RBI. Whitney Spitzer, sophomore left fielder, caught 2 crucial fly balls, had a hit and 1 RBI. Sophomore, Courtney Bigley, did a tremendous job at first base. Bigley went 1 for 4 at the plate, scored a run and had 1 RBI. Chemmy Garcia, sopho-more, made several great defensive plays at 3rd base. Garcia crossed home plate once and got a hit. Alyson Flowers, sophomore right fielder, made a great catch during the 5th inning and hustled on other defensive plays to stop Devine from rounding the bases. Flowers was 2 for 5 at the plate with a fence clearing home run. Savannah Sanchez, center fielder and the only senior on the team, got 2 hits, scored twice and had 1 RBI. Mikenzie Cade, junior, and Rebekah Halepaska, freshman, both contributed as pinch runners and also crossed home plate in Thursday night’s playoff game. The Long and Winding Road by Lynn Burton, Superintendent

August 18, 2014…the first day of school for 2014-15…doesn’t seem that long ago, does it? On the other hand, think about eve-rything that’s happened at school the past ten months. The last day of school, graduation and summer vacation are just around the corner. It's been another busy, productive school year with much to celebrate. For eight employees f Orange Grove ISD, this is their last school year as they’ve chosen to retire. Diana Acuna, Angie Diaz, Irma Galvan, Kay Milton, Katy O’Neal, Judy Preusser, Annie Villarreal and Emma Zaragoza have 121 total years of experience in public education. That translates into hun-dreds of young lives that have been enriched by the career efforts of these educators. For your service to our school district…thank you! May each of you fully enjoy your retirement years. A ca-reer in public schools encompasses many first days of school, graduations and all points in between. It is indeed a long and winding road that never disappears. I’ve seen that road before and it always leads me here…to say thank you to each member of the Orange Grove Independent School District community for another great year. Best wishes to all for a safe summer.
