You’ll also get a look into the creative genius of local artists at one of the hundreds of smaller art galleries and music venues dotting the cityscape.The arts season also marks a new beginning for downtown and Central Phoenix, which has been experiencing a revival from sleepy town to burgeoning city. Everywhere you look, new restaurants, retail shops, art galleries and living spaces are popping up, adding to the economic and cultural significance of the area’s urban core. Whether you live in the Valley and want to get reacquainted with the city you once knew or you’re new to the area and want to discover all that Central Phoenix has to offer, this guide will introduce you to the places and events that embody the hip and sophisticated urban renaissance the city is experiencing.

GETTING HERE Appropriately named, Central

Phoenix is within 15 miles of most surrounding Valley

cities and is roughly bounded by Glendale Avenue (north), Buchanan Street (south),

15th Avenue (west) and 16th Street (east). South of the I-10 is designated as Downtown, while north is called Uptown.

By Car Follow the 51, 1-17 or 202 freeways to the I-10 and

take the Seventh Street or Seventh Avenue exits to begin in Downtown. Thanks to an easy-to-navigate grid system, side streets can be used to

reach the length and width of the central corridor. To start

in Uptown, take the 51 to the Glendale Avenue exit.

By Bicycle While we wouldn’t

recommend long-distance treks in the dead of summer,

Central Phoenix can be reached on bicycle via the

Grand Canal, which runs from 75th Avenue and Camelback to Papago Park. View a map at

By Bus Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes

Fall is fast approaching and for Central Phoenix, that means the streets will be teeming with art lovers, theatergoers and entertainment hounds

all looking to be creatively and artistically inspired.

This year, the Valley’s renowned cultural organizations are pulling out all the stops by offering an exciting season of stunning productions. In October, Arizona Opera is presenting Rigoletto (pictured), Verdi’s tragic tale in which a court jester openly mocks courtiers, while throughout its season, the Phoenix Symphony will perform symphonic concerts under the direction of renowned

conductor Michael Christie. But if you think the only cultural offerings in downtown are the symphony and opera, you’d be wrong. Central Phoenix is a mecca for all things artistic, from city and regional theater troupes to innovative art galleries to emerging local bands. Theatergoers will be in stage heaven as a number of companies perform exciting productions including Actor’s Theatre’s A View of the Harbor and Arizona Theatre Company’s The Lady With All the Answers.

The buzz has been in the air for months now, but it’s finally happening. Construction has

begun on Sky Bloom at the downtown Civic space park, located on Van Buren between

Central and first avenues. Designed by Boston artist Janet Echelman, the 100-foot wide

and tall structure is inspired by Arizona’s monsoon clouds and Saguaro flowers.

WATCH IT GROWTo watch Sky Bloom “bloom,”

the City of Phoenix has installed a webcam that shows hourly

updates on park construction. The park is scheduled to open

Sure, Phoenix is a concrete jungle. But did you know there are a whopping 15 city parks in the Central Phoenix area alone? Whether you’re into shooting hoops, grilling some dogs or letting Fido make a run for it (in an enclosed area, of course), you won’t be at

a loss downtown.At 75 acres, Steele Indian School Park features

a dog park, amphitheater, bird lake, historic buildings and the Phoenix Green, 30 acres of rolling grass, walkways and trees. The park also pays tribute to Native American culture and history with the Circle of Life, an artistic fountain that explains the history of the Phoenix Indian School. Closer to Central is Encanto Park, 222 acres of picnic areas, a lagoon, boathouse, nature trail and two golf courses. The park also houses Enchanted Island, a children’s amusement park

filled with rides and games. Other parks of interest are Margaret T. Hance Park, which surrounds the Burton Barr Public Library, and Heritage & Science Park, which contains the Arizona Science Center, Phoenix Museum of History, Rosson House and Historic Heritage Square.
