In Phoenix, it’s hard to tell the changing of the seasons. Those telltale signs of cooler, brisker days and changing colors don’t quite come until later — when the rest of the country is buried in five feet of snow. But what we lack in temperate change we make up for in an art and cultural season like no other.

Arts CentralBehind the velvet curtain of CenPho’s fall arts season

In our fall, Downtown and Central Phoenix come alive with an array of shows, exhibits and performances designed to connect, engage and inspire the artist in all of us. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the dramatic sounds of the symphony or the awe-inspiring performances of the opera or ballet, you’ll find it here. You’ll also get a look into the creative genius of local artists at one of the hundreds of smaller art galleries and music venues dotting the cityscape. The arts season also marks a new beginning for downtown and Central Phoenix, which has been experiencing a revival from sleepy town to burgeoning city. Everywhere you look, new restaurants, retail shops, art galleries and living spaces are popping up, adding to the economic and cultural significance of the area’s urban core. Whether you live in the Valley and want to get reacquainted with the city you once knew or you’re new to the area and want to discover all that Central Phoenix has to offer, this guide will introduce you to the places and events that embody the hip and sophisticated urban renaissance the city is experiencing.

GETTING HERE Appropriately named, Central

Phoenix is within 15 miles of most surrounding Valley

cities and is roughly bounded by Glendale Avenue (north), Buchanan Street (south),

15th Avenue (west) and 16th Street (east). South of the I-10 is designated as Downtown, while north is called Uptown.

By Car Follow the 51, 1-17 or 202 freeways to the I-10 and

take the Seventh Street or Seventh Avenue exits to begin in Downtown. Thanks to an easy-to-navigate grid system, side streets can be used to

reach the length and width of the central corridor. To start

in Uptown, take the 51 to the Glendale Avenue exit.

By Bicycle While we wouldn’t

recommend long-distance treks in the dead of summer,

Central Phoenix can be reached on bicycle via the

Grand Canal, which runs from 75th Avenue and Camelback to Papago Park. View a map at

srpnet.com.

By Bus Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes

and schedules, visit valleymetro.org.

Fall is fast approaching and for Central Phoenix, that means the streets will be teeming with art lovers, theatergoers and entertainment hounds

all looking to be creatively and artistically inspired.

This year, the Valley’s renowned cultural organizations are pulling out all the stops by offering an exciting season of stunning productions. In October, Arizona Opera is presenting Rigoletto (pictured), Verdi’s tragic tale in which a court jester openly mocks courtiers, while throughout its season, the Phoenix Symphony will perform symphonic concerts under the direction of renowned

conductor Michael Christie. But if you think the only cultural offerings in downtown are the symphony and opera, you’d be wrong. Central Phoenix is a mecca for all things artistic, from city and regional theater troupes to innovative art galleries to emerging local bands. Theatergoers will be in stage heaven as a number of companies perform exciting productions including Actor’s Theatre’s A View of the Harbor and Arizona Theatre Company’s The Lady With All the Answers.

The buzz has been in the air for months now, but it’s finally happening. Construction has

begun on Sky Bloom at the downtown Civic space park, located on Van Buren between

Central and first avenues. Designed by Boston artist Janet Echelman, the 100-foot wide

and tall structure is inspired by Arizona’s monsoon clouds and Saguaro flowers.

WATCH IT GROWTo watch Sky Bloom “bloom,”

the City of Phoenix has installed a webcam that shows hourly

updates on park construction. The park is scheduled to open

in spring 2009. Check out phoenix.gov/

Park It Enjoy the great outdoors at city parks

Sure, Phoenix is a concrete jungle. But did you know there are a whopping 15 city parks in the Central Phoenix area alone? Whether you’re into shooting hoops, grilling some dogs or letting Fido make a run for it (in an enclosed area, of course), you won’t be at

a loss downtown. At 75 acres, Steele Indian School Park features

a dog park, amphitheater, bird lake, historic buildings and the Phoenix Green, 30 acres of rolling grass, walkways and trees. The park also pays tribute to Native American culture and history with the Circle of Life, an artistic fountain that explains the history of the Phoenix Indian School. Closer to Central is Encanto Park, 222 acres of picnic areas, a lagoon, boathouse, nature trail and two golf courses. The park also houses Enchanted Island, a children’s amusement park

filled with rides and games. Other parks of interest are Margaret T. Hance Park, which surrounds the Burton Barr Public Library, and Heritage & Science Park, which contains the Arizona Science Center, Phoenix Museum of History, Rosson House and Historic Heritage Square.

Home Run There’s nothing like a run through South Mountain

Park, especially when it’s for a good cause. On Oct. 25, the Lincoln Family YMCA is hosting the Phoenix

YMCA Half Marathon to benefit their inner city youth programs. It’s a good thing.

and seal the deal at one of downtown’s great wedding

When it comes to dining in Central Phoenix, you’ll never find yourself without a delicious variety of options. But if you’re in the mood to get dressed to the

nines and have a “grown-up” meal, downtown offers some of the most sophisticated, swanky and celebrated restaurants in the Valley.

If you consider the view just as important as the meal, make reservations at the Compass Room. Perched high atop the Hyatt Regency Phoenix in downtown, this rotating restaurant was recently

recognized by Wine Spectator for its California wine selection. If it’s nostalgia you’re after, Durant’s is the place to see — and be seen. Opened in 1950, this Phoenix landmark serves up meals fit for a king. Case in point: the 48-ounce Porterhouse. At $72.95, bring your appetite and your wallet for this one. In Historic Heritage Square is Pizzeria Bianco. Owned and operated by celebrated chef Chris Bianco, this downtown gem serves up gourmet pizzas that have garnered fans throughout the Valley and all over the nation. Be prepared to wait, however. Hungry diners are known to line up hours before the eatery opens for dinner.

Groove OnDowntown dance spots are eclectic and evolving

nightlife

You can feel it happening. Your toes start tapping, fingers start snapping, hips start swaying. Once the music moves you, there’s no stopping it. Rather than

keeping that rhythmic energy in, release it at one of downtown’s many dance clubs. Geared for all types of music lovers, these joints will keep you hopping.

A popular spot is Amsterdam, home of Martinis and

Manicures Mondays. This nightclub/bar is actually three

locations in one: Amsterdam, Club Miami and Malibu

Beach Bar and Surf Club, giving patrons a cool variety of nightlife options, all in one location.

Across from US Airways Center is PHX Nightclub, which caters to the sleek, sophisticated

and upscale crowd. Picture leather booths, granite bar and swanky VIP section. If there were

paparazzi in Phoenix, they’d be here. if latin flavor is more your taste, head to club dwntwn.

This sensory hotspot features two dance floors and three bars, one dedicated exclusively to

the art of tequila. For blues and jazz, check out the Rhythm Room. Opened since 1992, music

legends have provided the perfect sounds for movin’ and groovin.’
