2010 – Present Iowa State University Ames, IA Assistant Professor Teach landscape architecture studio, lecture, and independent study courses to graduate and undergraduate

students. Mentor and teach students with research interests in alignment with my own for other Departments and Colleges

as requested. To date I have worked with students from CRP, ARCH, DSN S, ISA, ArtID, DES., and Creative Writing & Environment in the ENGL Dept.

Lecture; hold desk critiques; write syllabi, assignments, and grading rubrics; grade; hold office hours; manage online courses (WebCT & Blackboard); contact and schedule guest speakers; organize juried critiques.

through grants, donations, and a public school bond initiative. Authored and co-authored additional grants securing over $550,000 for program costs and research. This case study highlighted how UCD’s affiliation with Colorado Campus Compact and partnership with the UCAN Serve AmeriCorps program helped turn a departmental initiative into a campus-wide discussion about service. May-June, 2007 Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Conference Sacramento, CA Full Day Intensive Panel Presenter Title: Sustaining the Schoolyard Garden Presented the Learning Landscape Initiative’s schoolyard gardens as a case study. For many, the schoolyard will be the primary ‘nature’ experience in their childhood. As cities grow, it becomes more important that we use our school grounds in ever more creative ways to help people learn about nature. With all of the enthusiasm for greening school grounds, we lack enough research to know what components ensure sustainability of these gardens. This workshop presented several case studies of school garden planning and implementation to examine with researchers and practitioners some of the key elements that aid school garden sustainability.

May-June, 2007 Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Conference Sacramento, CA Panel Presenter Title: The Child and Youth Friendly City Initiative of Denver Presented the Learning Landscape Initiative as a case study of the Child and Youth Friendly City Initiative. The City of Denver has invested a significant amount of money in public school playgrounds improving outdated and unsafe infrastructure which enhances the quality of life for children, youth, and other residents. The initiative has been a major component of the Denver Blueprint plan and is used as a determinant of quality of life for residents throughout Denver.

March, 2007 Rocky Mountain Land Use Institute Conference Denver, CO Poster Presenter & Guest Speaker Title: Planning and Designing for Healthy Childhood Development: Mapping Places of Play and Prey with Kids Presented findings from one of my independent studies in which aerial maps were used to investigate Denver neighborhoods through children's eyes. This community-based research project taught inner-city children about the power of mapping and voicing preferences and concerns. Using aerial maps, hand-drawn maps, photographs, and

other methods of exploration, children created maps of school grounds and surrounding neighborhoods revealing quantitative and qualitative data in a creative and informative way. February, 2006 Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Active Living Conference Coronada, CA Poster Presenter Title: Rethinking Playgrounds for Physical Education - Evaluation of the Effects of Policy, Design Standards, Curriculum, Risk Management, and the Built Environment on the Physical Activity of Children at Three Denver Public Schools Presented findings from a year long collaborative research project working with 573 elementary school students, physical education teachers, and Denver Public School administrators. Pre- and post-surveys were completed by 99% of the students enrolled in 4th-6th grade to determine the impact of play equipment circuits, art projects, and increased health awareness. Observational studies highlighted children’s physical activity levels and peer-to-peer social interactions revealing a wide-range of activities and dynamics. Initial research indicates that user perceptions of risk & use of traditional play equipment as part of regular Physical Education classes should be further studied. A need for new playground assessment tools was also identified to address new methods of using play equipment to enhance physical education classes.

The main emphasis of the presentation was on the failures and successes of the program to date and advice for others seeking to start their own architectural service learning course.

Undergraduate and Graduate Courses at ISU: DSN S 102: Design Studio I (Spring 2014 - INSTRUCTOR) This 4 credit design studio course exploring the interaction of two-and three-dimensional design. Emphasis on fundamental skills and ideas shared across design disciplines. Investigation of creative process, visual order and materials, and development of critical thinking through studio projects and lectures. Includes study of precedents, contemporary design practices and disciplines in their cultural contexts. LA 274: The Social & Behavioral Landscape (Spring 2011, 2012, 1013, 2014 - INSTRUCTOR)* This 3 credit course explores social and behavioral factors pertinent to design of domestic, civic, and commercial landscapes. In this course, students focus on design principles as they relate to human behavior and activities. By studying a broad demographic and cultural spectrum of people and applying various principles of design and theories of human behavior, students gain insight into how outdoor spaces and places are used and perceived. Students learn how to observe, map, and document what they see and experience. Some topics covered include: Seeing and Believing – the Power & Limits of Observation; Brief Introduction to Environmental Psychology; Nature and Everyday Landscapes; Place Attachment, Ownership, & Empowerment; Sense of Place & Placelessness; Community-Based Design; Race, Culture, & Place; Proxemics & Territoriality; ADA and Universal Design. Student projects vary and require active student participation. This course is open to all students across campus and does not have any prerequisites. (Enrollment capped at 65 because of limited classroom space) LA/ARCH 301: Collaborative Studio – Ecological & Sustainable Design (Fall 2010, 2011 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 6 credit course introduces students from Architecture and Landscape Architecture to multidisciplinary team design thinking while emphasizing ecological and sustainable design. Students develop half-acre to hundred-acre landscape design and architecture proposals; Apply critical methodological frameworks to shape site systems while providing appropriate support for diverse user groups and creating culturally meaningful places; Assess and interpret strategies for infrastructure and natural systems. Development of a critical design process is stressed. Urban agriculture, community gathering places, civic venues, and transportation have been primary generators for student designs. This is a service-learning course focused on creating relationships to enhance mutual respect and understanding within these two disciplines for future partnerships. (Enrollment roughly 40 LA students with two LA faculty; ARCH enrollment roughly 80 students with 5-6 ARCH faculty) LA 301: Site Design II (Fall 2012, 2013 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 6 credit course builds upon previous studios and technical courses and emphasizes site design and planning at macro-, meso-, and micro-scales. In this course development of half-acre to hundred-acre landscape design and planning proposals are developed. Apply critical methodological frameworks to shape site systems while providing appropriate support for diverse user groups and creating culturally meaningful places. Assess and interpret a program of use, organize subjective and objective site inventory and analysis, develop functional and poetic design strategies for infrastructure and natural systems, and craft artistic and functionally explicit landscape architectural proposals. Further exploration, refinement, and development of appropriate technique and high level of craft in representations to support design thinking process and final scheme presentation build upon other courses and skills. LA 541: Principles of research ... for landscape architects (Fall 2013 – INSTRUCTOR) This 3 credit course examines design inquiry and research methods appropriate to landscape architectural projects, including bibliographical, historical, numerical, statistical, survey, and geographical methods. Readings, discussions, and application problems enhance learning. Preparation of a brief research proposal is expected. (Required MLA course) LA 478/578G: Advanced Landscape Representation and Graphics (Fall 2011, 2012 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 3 credit course explores representation of landscapes using traditional and nontraditional methods. Students enhance drawing skills using a variety of media (analog: pencil/charcoal/colored pencils/markers/ink; digital: Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Google SketchUp; hybrid: mixed-media, sculpture, video composites, animation) and are required to improve existing graphics/models/videos for portfolio quality work as well as to create completely new drawings. Student perceptions about representation and what is expected in various work environments will be enhanced through a partnership with professional mentors from the field of landscape architecture. Peer-to-peer learning and service-learning are key components of this class. Students are encouraged to explore personal areas of interest and to expand specific knowledge as desired. This course is designed to promote self-understanding and growth as well as to emphasize the importance of process and reflection. Guest speakers, drawing charrettes, sketchbooks, and outside examples of analog, digital, and hybrid drawings and models are explored. In addition, some video work, incorporating mixed-media, is also required. (Enrollment capped at 35) DSN S 446/546: Interdisciplinary Option Design Studio - Poetry of Place, Earthworks, and Revelations (Spring 2011, 2013 - INSTRUCTOR)* This 6 credit studio challenges student perceptions about land, art, design, earthworks, environmental ethics, and landscape architecture through a variety of readings, discussions, and projects. Students are encouraged to explore personal areas of interest and to write manifestos stating what they believe. This course unlike many traditional studio courses is designed to promote self-understanding and growth as well as to emphasize the importance of process and reflection. Student work ranges from simple land art installations to indoor experiential exhibitions. Field trips to see significant earthworks projects, public sculpture, and eco-revelatory designs aided students in discovery. Poetry and prose are used to document process, discourse, and revelations.

Students learn about ethics, planning theory, community development, healthy and safe environments, planning methods, design charrettes, construction phasing and budgeting, fundraising, and the planning and building process. The philosophical, political, and economic roots of the various theories are discussed. Ideas are placed in the context of the planning profession's




history and its present aims, interests, and ethics. Students critique readings, write research papers and essays, present research findings, and lead interactive sessions. ECI 695: Chesapeake Bay Watershed Ecology & Curriculum Development (Instructor for Norfolk University in Virginia)* This 3 credit service-learning course provides hands-on instruction in the field, classroom curriculum instruction, and active participation in a five-day field experience which includes group activities, discussions, and reading assignments. The final products serve as a capstone project for senior planning students about to graduate. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing with strong communication and/or graphic skills. ENVD 3909: Independent Study - Fundraising and Grant Writing (Fall 2009 & Spring 2010 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 3-credit course focuses on strategic fundraising and grant writing with community partners to finance elements of an elementary school playground in Brighton 27-j’s District in Colorado. Students are required to have taken a master planning or design course and to have a vested interest in the success of the project. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing. ENVD 3909: Independent Study – Master Planning & Initial Designs (Summer 2009 & Spring 2010 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 3-credit course focuses on enhancing an existing master plan and creating phase I playground designs with community partners in Brighton 27-j’s District in Colorado. ENVD 4363: Sustainability and Design (Spring & Fall 2009 – INSTRUCTOR)* This 3 credit service-learning course focuses on sustainability and design of LEED certified Casey Middle School’s building and playground. Students from Casey Middle School work with students from CU Boulder to create information pamphlets and a curriculum-based guidebook for Casey’s “sustainability ambassadors” program. In addition students work together to create sustainable design challenges. Topics include theory of sustainability, sustainable policies & practices, USGBC’s LEED guidelines, sustainable materials, collaborative planning & design, and socio-cultural interpretations of place. Prerequisite: Upper-division standing. ENVD 2002: Environmental Design Graphic Media (Fall 2009 & Fall 2008 – INSTRUCTOR)* Using both lectures and drawing exercises, this 3 credit class examines the traditional representational conventions used by the design professions to depict and describe space, form, pattern and information. Instructors use a multi-disciplined approach that explores the three basic intentions that inform the marks that designers make: visualization, representation and communication. Utilizing a problem based approach to computer visualization and production, students learn the commands necessary for professional 2D drawing, design, and drafting using a Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) software program. Students will use these tools to develop real-world examples as drawing projects, and create a set of simple construction drawings. Topics include creation and modification of complex two- and three-dimensional objects; orthographic views; and analysis of current and future trends of computer usage for design. Prerequisite: ENVD 3352 – advanced computer graphics. ENVD 1004: Introductory Design Studio I (Spring 2008 - INSTRUCTOR)* This 6 credit course introduces students to the complexity of forces that interact to shape the designed environment. ENVD 2001: Social Factors in Environmental Design (Spring 2008 - TA for Instructor Meredith Banasiak)* This 3 credit course seeks to explore social factors of designed environments by addressing scholarly perspectives on complex and reciprocal relationships between humans and environments. By gaining a greater awareness of critical issues concerning human and social connectivity to the built environment, including how social and individual behavior is reflected in and influenced by the environment, the objective is that the student will have the ability to apply this knowledge, and methodologies which probe this relationship, to the design and building process.
