Robertson, 20, began training with his new team- mates on Monday and is on the bench for this afternoon’s clash with the Dragons Premiership Select at Pontefract RUFC. Speaking after his arrival at the club, Robertson said: “I can’t wait to learn from the experienced players that are here at Yorkshire Carnegie. At Gala, we do not have the opportunity of playing in the British & Irish Cup any more but I am looking forward to being involved this weekend. “I want to grasp the opportunity and make the most of it. I know Ross Graham, who lived a few miles away from me back home, and Bryan Redpath lives in the town next to me, so that has helped. It is so much easier coming into a club when you have a few familiar faces around you. “Hopefully, I can do well in the next two weeks to put myself out there and things can progress from there. I used to work in a landscape gardening business but I have packed that in now to focus on my rugby full-time and this is a great opportunity for me. I loved working as well but something had to give as I want to give professional rugby my best shot and I know I always have the gardening to fall back on later in my career. “The Dragons won’t know too much about me at the weekend so hopefully I can show what I can do, hold myself in the scrums and do myself justice,” added Robertson. Director of Rugby Chris Gibson said: “We are grateful to the Scottish Rugby Union for allowing Gary to join us for the next fortnight. This will take some of the pressure off Rob O’Donnell and Michael Cusack at tight head during the cup period and it will be good to see how Gary fits into our environment.” Recently, we looked back at the club's Scottish connections which has seen 16 Scottish internationals play for the club down the years right up to Michael Cusack in the current squad. Scottish rugby obviously has a huge influence on the current Yorkshire Carnegie side with Redpath as Head Coach and Sir Ian McGeechan leading the club as Executive President. As well as Cusack, who made his international debut in the lead up to the 2015 World Cup on residency grounds, we also boast Hawick-born hooker Ross Graham in the current squad, who has played at Under-20 level for Scotland. Whilst McGeechan and Chris Rea were famous Scottish internationals from Headingley FC history, the first Scottish international to play for the newly-merged club was number eight Stuart Reid. A powerful figure, the policeman joined in 1998 and was reunited with his former Scottish junior international team-mate Stuart Lancaster. The next Scottish international was winger Tony Stanger, forever remembered for his Grand Slam-winning try against England in 1990, who moved to Leeds in October 2000 in the final year of his playing career. Our most capped international player of all time was little known when he first arrived at Headingley Carnegie from Caldy. Prop Gavin Kerr joined in the second half of the promotion-winning campaign of 2001 and became a mainstay of the side for the next five years. He amassed 50 caps for Scotland. Kerr was part of the tartan army at the club when Phil Davies was Director of Rugby. With Leeds in the Premiership, and the close proximity to the border, the club became an option for players to show the Scottish management they were worthy of selection and not be too far away from home. Back rower Carl Hogg captained the club in our first season in the Premiership, whilst Cameron Mather was a huge factor in ensuring we became an established force in the elite league the following year with Heineken Cup qualification. Centre Jamie Mayer was an exciting figure but unfortunately injuries meant we never saw the best of him, whilst second rower Stewart Campbell joined from Italian rugby and was a regular in the squad. Campbell made his debut on the same day as fly-half Gordon Ross. Ross will forever have a place in the club’s history books as a key man during a golden period for the club when we became an established part of the Premiership, culminating in the Powergen Cup win at Twickenham in 2005. Ross was in competition for the ten shirt with an old rival for the Scottish fly-half spot at the time, Duncan Hodge, with the latter now forging a career as a talented coach north of the border. Jon Dunbar joined Leeds from Newcastle and earned a call up to Scotland in 2005, whilst the capture of Scottish captain Gordon Bulloch was a major coup at the time. The hooker joined after touring with the British & Irish Lions to New Zealand but unfortunately for all parties he did not enjoy his best rugby at Headingley Carnegie. That season number eight Roland Reid and centre Andy Craig also joined the club. The last Scottish international to play for the club, prior to the return of Cusack this summer, was second row Tom Ryder, who retired last year to begin a career as as teacher. 1 YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE BOLSTER FRONT ROW OPTIONS FOR CUP CLASH

“I want to grasp the opportunity and make the most of it. I know Ross Graham, who lived a few miles away from me back home, and Bryan Redpath lives in the town next to me, so that has helped. It is so much easier coming into a club when you have a few familiar faces around you.

Director of Rugby Chris Gibson said: “We are grateful to the Scottish Rugby Union for allowing Gary to join us for the next fortnight. This will take some of the pressure off Rob O’Donnell and Michael Cusack at tight head during the cup period and it will be good to see how Gary ts into our environment.”

Recently, we looked back at the club's Scottish connections which has seen 16 Scottish internationals play for the club down the years right up to Michael Cusack in the current squad.

Scottish rugby obviously has a huge in uence on the current Yorkshire Carnegie side with Redpath as Head Coach and Sir Ian McGeechan leading the club as Executive President. As well as Cusack, who made his international debut in the lead up to the 2015 World Cup on residency grounds, we also boast Hawick-born hooker Ross Graham in the current squad, who has played at Under-20 level for Scotland.

Whilst McGeechan and Chris Rea were famous Scottish internationals from Headingley FC history, the rst Scottish international to play for the newly-merged club was number eight Stuart Reid. A powerful gure, the policeman joined in 1998 and was reunited with his former Scottish junior international team-mate Stuart Lancaster.

The next Scottish international was winger Tony Stanger, forever remembered for his Grand Slam-winning try against England in 1990, who moved to Leeds in October 2000 in the nal year of his playing career.

Our most capped international player of all time was little known when he rst arrived at Headingley Carnegie from Caldy. Prop Gavin Kerr joined in the second half of the promotion-winning campaign of 2001 and became a mainstay of the side for the next ve years.

Back rower Carl Hogg captained the club in our rst season in the Premiership, whilst Cameron Mather was a huge factor in ensuring we became an established force in the elite league the following year with Heineken Cup quali cation.

Centre Jamie Mayer was an exciting gure but unfortunately injuries meant we never saw the best of him, whilst second

rower Stewart Campbell joined from Italian rugby and was a regular in the squad.

Campbell made his debut on the same day as y-half Gordon Ross. Ross will forever have a place in the club’s history books as a key man during a golden period for the club when we became an established part of the Premiership, culminating in the Powergen Cup win at Twickenham in 2005.

Ross was in competition for the ten shirt with an old rival for the Scottish y-half spot at the time, Duncan Hodge, with the latter now forging a career as a talented coach north of the border.

CLUB NEWSCOMMUNITY ROUND-UPOur Community Team have had a busy fi rst term working with schools and clubs across Yorkshire. Building on the successful club programme, this year has seen the launch of the Affi liated Schools scheme which has been followed by the Play Captains and Rugby Readers programmes.

Yorkshire Carnegie community manager Lisa McCann said: “It has been a very successful rst term and that is down to the support and dedication of the teachers, coaches, managers and all of the volunteers involved with our schools and rugby clubs. The matchdays have been fantastic and it has been great to see so many groups come to Headingley Carnegie to watch the rst-team in action.

"We are looking ahead to a big 2017 with plans already in place for our new programmes and, of course, we hope it will be a big year on the eld too. Last week we were delighted to welcome pupils from Rodillian Academy who were given the

opportunity to ask questions to Matt Smith and Josh Bainbridge before the game ahead of taking part in the half-time games, along with teams from St Augustines, Allerton CofE.”

The Yorkshire Carnegie Community Department were delighted to present two monthly awards at our last game against Bedford.

The awards recognise clubs and schools who have been key supporters of the Yorkshire Carnegie Community Programme.

The Club of the Month award was collected by Vicki Parsonage

on behalf of Selby Girls and the School of the Month award was presented to Richmond House and collected by Simon Lowe from Yorkshire Carnegie hooker Phil Nilsen.

“It is fantastic to be able to reward our af liated clubs and schools with these awards. Both Richmond House and Selby Girls have really bought into the programme this year and the staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to promote our great game.

"We are looking forward to continuing to work closely with them,” added McCann.

WELCOME TO PONTEFRACT RUFCWe are delighted to play today’s game at Pontefract RUFC, who are the seventh club to host one of our 'On the Road' fi xtures since we introduced the initiative back in 2012.

Rugby Union has been played in Pontefract since the late 19th century; indeed there is a photograph in the clubhouse showing their Yorkshire Cup team for the 1890-91 tournament.

The Old Pomfretians, as they were then known, re-formed after the Second World War and moved to Moor Lane. The present clubhouse was formally opened by Doug Harrison, President of the RFU, in 1967. At the same time, the club’s name was changed to Pontefract.

Floodlights and a stand were added in the 1980s and in 2000 new changing rooms were built. Pontefract have won the

Yorkshire Shield twice, in 1951 and 1984.

Pontefract were promoted from Yorkshire One at the end of the 2007 season into North Two East (Level 6). This later became North One East.

Pontefract started the leagues in North East 2, gained promotion to Courage League North East One, were relegated to North East Two in 1988-89 and joined Yorkshire One in 2000-01 at the inception of the regional league system. Their most successful season prior to 2006-07 was 2003-04 when they reached the Fourth Round of the Intermediate Cup, the Second Round of the Yorkshire Cup and lost in the Play-off Final to Alnwick for a place in North 2 East.

In terms of hosting a British & Irish Cup game they follow Selby this season, another new appointment, with the other ve

venues being Scarborough, who will welcome Yorkshire Carnegie for the third consecutive year in our nal pool game in the new year, Hull Ionians, who have also held three games, York, who have hosted us twice, and Wharfedale and Hudders eld YMCA who have both staged a game each.

At today’s game look out for the mini teams from Pontefract who will be taking part in the half-time games and Guard of Honour.

CHRISTMAS TREE IN HEADINGLEY CARNEGIE STADIUM MEMORIAL GARDEN  Following on from the great feedback from last year, we will once again place a Christmas tree in the Memorial Garden next to the memorial stone at the top of the garden, this will be available from 5th December. Please feel free to lay fl owers etc. around the bottom of the Christmas tree.

The Headingley Lodge reception will have white ribbons and a small card if you wish to write a personal message and tie this to the tree, alternatively you can place a small bauble or something of a similar nature. We ask that you do not place anything of value on the tree.

Headingley Lodge will be open until Christmas Eve, after this time ribbons and cards will be available from the Gatehouse. On Boxing Day the garden will only be accessible in the afternoon after the Rhinos' Festive Challenge xture. The tree will be in place until Friday 6th January. If you wish to collect anything from the tree feel free to do so by this date.

LONDON WELSH RUGBY CLUB TO GO INTO LIQUIDATIONLONDON WELSH RUGBY CLUB CONFIRM THIS WEEK THAT THE CLUB IS TO SEEK VOLUNTARY LIQUIDATION.

London Welsh Chairman Gareth Hawkins, said: “London Welsh has reached a dif cult point in its illustrious history. Due to a playing budget of £1.7million and gates at games numbering as low 400, the club’s current business model is totally unsustainable.

“The debts accrued from trading in this way have left the club with no alternative but to seek liquidation. Having to break that news to 40 staff members was extremely dif cult.

“All creditors of London Welsh Rugby Club will be contacted by the liquidator.

“In the New Year, it is the hope and intention of the Board that London Welsh will be able to return to playing at Old Deer Park.

"However, it will rst be necessary to change the club’s business model to a semi-professional set-up and form a new company, and then raise £300,000 so that the club can regain a position within the RFU Greene King IPA Championship.

“Richmond have proved that a club can compete in the Championship with a semi-pro model, and I rmly believe we can make this work in 2017.”

An RFU spokesperson said: “London Welsh intend to go into voluntary liquidation. When that happens, the club will receive an immediate 20-point deduction. They can continue to play while the process is ongoing, and the RFU are working with the club to nd a way to ful l their xtures this season. We will update all clubs as this develops.”

Established by and for London’s Welsh community in 1885, the club has contributed 177 players to the Wales national team and 43 players to the British & Irish Lions over the years.

In 2009, the club went into administration shortly after turning professional but were allowed to continue in the Championship after being bought out.

London Welsh moved to Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium in 2012 and played matches there for three seasons.

Back in 2014, then London Welsh Chairman Bleddyn Phillips, said: “The club is committed to establishing itself as a Premiership club.

"We are looking forward to building up and deepening local

support in Oxfordshire to help us achieve and continue to play top class rugby in the county, together with maintaining our strong and traditional links with the ever loyal support base from Old Deer Park where the professional team will continue to work and train alongside our Amateur and Women's teams, as well as participating fully in junior rugby at all levels.”

However, the following season London Welsh had left Oxfordshire and returned to Old Deer Park.

Carnegie are due to meet Welsh on New Year's Day.

BEDFORD BLUES 46 DRAGONS PREMIERSHIP SELECT 33

In an end-to-end game at Goldington Road, the Dragons earned a bonus point in the 46-33 defeat.

Dragons y-half Arwel Robson scored two penalties to give his side the lead but Bedford slowly came into things and were gifted a try when the Dragons attempted to force their way out of their own 22. As they showed quick hands along the right wing, Tom Grifths read the pass perfectly and plucked the ball out of the air before crossing the line and Myles Dorrian slotted over the extras.

Tom Whiteley then danced his way through the defence to score under the posts, with Dorrian converting to make it 14-6.

Before the break Robson converted his third penalty of the afternoon to close the gap to ve at half-time.

The Dragons came out ring after the interval and Robson opened the scoring for the Welsh team.

Dorrian put Bedford back in front with a 46th-minute penalty before Whiteley scored his second of the afternoon.

Bedford secured the bonus point six minutes later when the Dragons were penalised for not releasing a tackle and Dorrian sent the ball to touch. Sam James found his man with the lineout ball before joining the back of the maul and falling over the line to score. Dorrian converted to make it 31-16.

The Dragons did not give in and reduced the decit to eight points with another well-worked try for Will Talbot-Davies, who breezed over the line, and Robson converted once again.

Bedford scored their fth try through Elliot Clements-Hill, with Jake Sharp converting, but three minutes later it was 43-23 as Perkins got his name on the scoresheet.

The game may have looked out of reach, but no one told the Dragons and they fought to the very end. Nightingale was on hand to round off a nice attacking move before Bedford were reduced to 14 as Clements-Hill was carded for killing the ball.

The Dragons made the extra man count and soon crossed for their fourth as Patric Lewis glided across the line. With time ticking away, Sharp hit a late penalty for Bedford to round things off nicely.

DRAGONS PREMIERSHIP SELECT 27EALING TRAILFINDERS 28

Aaron Penberthy’s penalty ve minutes from time ensured Ben Ward’s team of victory after the young Dragons pushed Ealing Trailnders hard throughout the 80 minutes.

The home team opened the scoring when Dragons’ y-half Arwel Robson jinked his way through the visitors’ defence, and centre Barney Nightingale popped up on his shoulder for a simple run-in before he took advantage of a James Cordy-Redden error to hack through and dive on the ball for his second.

Rhys Lawrence grabbed Ealing Trailnders’ rst try from a rolling maul, then just on the stroke of half-time Curtis Wilson peeled round off his wing to force his way over the line.

Penberthy’s conversion meant that the hosts only trailed 17-15 at the break and they enjoyed the better of the match at the start of the second-half, but the Dragons’ defence held out.

Nightingale secured his hat-trick after Robson again broke through and off-loaded to his half-back partner Owen Davies, who in turn set Nightingale free to run in.

Mark Bright hit back with a classic number 8 pick-up try, and Penberthy’s second penalty gave Ealing Trailnders the lead for the rst time in the match before Robson’s three-pointer put the Dragons back in front. Penberthy then landed his third from just inside the Dragons’ half.

PLAYERS TO WATCHWelsh Under-20s international Barney Nightingale, who made his debut for the Dragons aged just 17, was a regular for the Dragons in their B&I Cup campaign last season and the centre has been in impressive form this time around, scoring ve tries in the rst two rounds of the competition.

Newport winger Elliot Frewen, who was named the Sevens Player of the Year at the Aviva Premiership awards in 2014, made two appearances in the B&I Cup last season and could be set to make his return today.

Fly-half and former Wales Under-18 international Arwel Robson has already notched up 30 points in this season’s campaign and will be an inuential player for the Welsh side this afternoon.

Joseph Davies is another former Wales Under-20 who made his B&I debut this year against Bedford. The lock is the son of Andrew Davies, a former weightlifter who won silver at the 1989 World Championships, bronze at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in 1986 and gold in Auckland in 1990.

Prop Joe Lavendar brings plenty of experience to the side and his former clubs include Cardiff, Saracens and Newport.
