Seals joined Carnegie on a one-year deal last summer from Darlington Mowden Park and so far he has only made one appearance in the Greene King IPA Championship off the bench. He has been a mainstay of the British & Irish Cup side who have booked a quarter-final clash with London Irish but Seals hopes a switch to centre could give him the chance to impress further. He commented: “It is nice to get an opportunity to play and I am looking forward to the game against Cornish. I am happy to play wherever the team needs me and with Max Wright, Tom Casson and Andy Forsyth all unavailable I am happy to switch from fly-half to centre. It has been a while since I have played at twelve but I have played there quite a few times in my career so I know what is needed.” Last month, Seals got the chance to play at Aviva Premiership side Wasps down in Coventry on loan, after Lee Blackett returned to his former club enquiring about fly-half cover for the LV= Cup campaign. Seals made his debut off the bench in a tough defeat at Sandy Park against Exeter Chiefs before starting the following week against the Ospreys at the Ricoh Arena in front of 11,409 spectators. Seals lined up alongside another former Carnegie player, Craig Hampson, in the halves and kicked two conversions and a penalty in the 22-31 loss. Reflecting on his time in Coventry, Seals says the experience was beneficial for him. He added: “It was a good experience and it was nice to carry on getting a few fixtures under my belt after our games in the British & Irish Cup. The time at Wasps kept my match fitness up and that has meant that, when I get a chance like this weekend, I am ready to go. It was a very good environment at Wasps. The players are very professional, as you would expect, and are a good bunch. I was able to pick up tips and experience from those Premiership players and that can only help me going forward.” Seals joined Yorkshire Carnegie from Darlington Mowden Park after impressing last season with the National Division One side. Originally from South Africa he joined Darlington Mowden Park in November 2015. Looking ahead to the clash with the Pirates, Seals says the focus for the last fortnight has been to build on the impressive performance, particularly in the first-half, against Rotherham last time out. He added: “Any game in this league is tough. We have not looked at them too much, the focus is on our game and we believe if we can execute properly things will go well. We want to win every game we play, wherever we play, but we are particularly proud of our record at Headingley this season. Being at home gives us the advantage and it would be good to keep that record intact, especially leading up to the Irish game. “We were in last week for a few days session, so it wasn’t a week off but it was good to have the break from the game-day fatigue. The whole squad is refreshed and ready for Cornish. "All the boys were very happy with how the Rotherham game started, there are a few patches we have worked on but there is a good feeling in the camp. There is a lot of confidence coming from the group too. We will have to see how Saturday’s game unfolds but I am hoping I can add something different into the backline, with an extra kicking option, which can help." 1 SEALS LOOKING TO MAKE THE MOST OF HIS OPPORTUNITY

S outh African back Warren Seals is hoping to make the most of

his opportunity this afternoon as he is named in the starting line-up at centre to face Cornish Pirates.

Seals joined Carnegie on a one-year deal last summer from Darlington Mowden Park and so far he has only made one appearance in the Greene King IPA Championship off the bench. He has been a mainstay of the British & Irish Cup side who have booked a quarter- nal clash with London Irish but Seals hopes a switch to centre could give him the chance to impress further.

me and with Max Wright, Tom Casson and Andy Forsyth all unavailable I am happy to switch from y-half to centre. It has been a while since I have played at twelve but I have played there quite a few times in my career so I know what is needed.”

Last month, Seals got the chance to play at Aviva Premiership side Wasps down in Coventry on loan, after Lee Blackett returned to his former club enquiring about y-half cover for the LV= Cup campaign.

CLUB NEWS

Yorkshire Carnegie Under-18s ended their campaign last week with a home fi xture against league leaders Sale Sharks.

The young Carnegie side suffered a disappointing defeat which saw them nish sixth in the National Academies Under-18s League.

In their penultimate game an inexperienced Yorkshire Carnegie Academy side produced one of their best performances of the season but were denied victory at Leicester Tigers with the nal kick of the game.

The young Carnegie side have produced some impressive periods of play during the campaign but were only able to earn one victory against Newcastle Falcons.

Speaking about the season, Academy Manager Jon Pendlebury said: “Overall myself and Ben Lazenby are pleased

with the progression the team has made this season. This group of players have been a pleasure to work with. They have been a tight group and have really challenged each other.

“Our game against Leicester was particularly one of the most pleasing and rewarding performances for the squad and the coaching staff that we have been involved in. So many good things were coming through that have been worked on and developed over the season.

“This was a very young squad with over half still under 17 and they stepped up to the Academy level. There are some very talented players in the squad and I am excited to see how they will develop in our system.

"For some players this will be the end of their Academy journey with us over the next few weeks and I would like to thank them all

for their efforts to the club and we wish them all the best for the future.

“This weekend 13 selected players from our Under-17s will be playing alongside 13 selected players from Newcastle Falcons against England North Under-18s at Leeds Beckett. This will be a fantastic experience for our players to play alongside different players. The Under-17s will now work with Scott Barrow, who will take more of a lead with this age group, and on Sunday 5th March they will be taking part in a joint competitive session with Bishop Burton College.”

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs CORNISH PIRATES | SATURDAY 18th FEBRUARY, 2017

CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1997 LIONS TOUROn 1st June Headingley Carnegie will host a special 20th Anniversary Lions Lunch to celebrate the victorious 1997 Lions tour to South Africa.

Special guests at the dinner will be three people who are synonymous with the tour, Sir Ian McGeechan, who was the head coach for the winning tour, John Bentley, who scored one of the greatest individual tries in Lions history, and Jeremy Guscott, who landed the winning drop-goal during the decisive second Test.

Speaking about the dinner, Bentley said: “This will be a fantastic occasion to commemorate the 1997 Lions Tour, which was special in many ways. It was the tour that

embraced the amateur game and the turning of professionalism and embodied what was great about the two periods.

"Heading into the tour we were not given a chance, they were the reigning World Champions and we had been written off but the side went onto become the fourth touring Lions side to win a Test.

"I am looking forward to welcoming Jeremy to Headingley Carnegie and, along with Sir Ian McGeechan, sharing our memories of the tour with the guests.”

The three-course lunch starts at 12noon and will be hosted in the Long Bar. It costs £600 (plus VAT) for a table of ten. To book your place for the event call the sales team on 0113 2033222.

SCOTT BARROW RETURNSIN ACADEMY COACHING ROLEYorkshire Carnegie have strengthened their Academy coaching team with the appointment of former player Scott Barrow as their new Academy Player Performance Coach.

Barrow spent four seasons at Headingley Carnegie as a player, making 82 appearances and scoring nine tries. In his rst season at Headingley Carnegie he helped the team achieve promotion to the Premiership.

His new role will involve having lead responsibilities over player development for the 16-18 age group, head coach duties of the Under-18s and assistant coaching with the club’s Under-16s, alongside head coach Danny Wild.

Barrow joins the club having developed as a coach, specialising in working with the 13-18 age groups. More recently he has worked full-time with Kings School Maccles eld in Cheshire for the last four years.

During his 16-year playing career the former centre also had a spell playing Rugby League with St Helens, before returning to the fteen-man code with Glasgow in 2004.

Speaking about joining the Yorkshire Carnegie coaching set up, Barrow said: “It’s great to be back at the club. I have learnt a lot about the development of young men both on and off the

eld during my time at King’s School Maccles eld, coupled with my experience at elite level rugby I feel it puts me in a good place to take on this role. It is a role I am looking forward to getting stuck into.

“Working with Jon Pendlebury and Ben Lazenby, along with the other academy staff, will be great for me and a fantastic opportunity for me to progress as a coach and to make the future a bright one for Yorkshire Carnegie with these talented young stars coming through.”

COMMUNITY TEAM HELPING TO INSPIRE YOUNG LEADERSYorkshire Carnegie’s community team have been working in affi liated schools across the region to deliver a new Play Leaders programme.

A selected group of students in each school are chosen by their teachers. These pupils are then given the responsibility to set up and lead playtime games with the younger age groups.

The programme is supported by Yorkshire Carnegie who run a training session which teaches the children the different games they can play and the importance of teamwork. This has recently involved Andy Saull and Taylor Prell visiting Ireland Wood Primary School.

Following this training session, the children will be presented with their certi cates in a Yorkshire Carnegie assembly.

Speaking about the programme, Community Manager Lisa McCann, said: “We are delighted with how the programme is progressing so far, the children are constantly developing their own ideas and are making a difference in their schools. Each school has a different way of implementing the scheme and it is great to be able to share ideas and the various success stories.”

CLUB NEWSSPORT ENGLAND INVESTS IN RUGBYSport England’s investment of over £100million of National Lottery and Government funding for 25 national governing bodies of sport, to get more people playing sport regularly and keeping that healthy habit, included £12.6million investment in rugby for the Rugby Football Union.

Sport England said that the RFU’s plan to convert school rugby players into committed club members via their successful CBRE All Schools programme, which will by 2019 have worked with 750 state schools without a tradition of playing rugby and in areas with highly-diverse communities, helped players "to move into well-organised and supportive community clubs with good coaching and plenty of playing opportunities".

They added that for those that like rugby but not the full contact version, the RFU will create more opportunities to play informal, social and non-contact touch rugby, adding: “They’ll also create more chances to play

rugby sevens around the country. With female players currently playing on average fewer than 10 matches a season, but 50 per cent wanting to play more, women’s and girls’ rugby is also in for a boost. More ‘pitch up and play’ opportunities will be created.

“Around 13,000 university students currently play rugby. The RFU will use its Sport England funding to increase that number, and support graduates to continue playing when they move to the next big phase in their lives.

“Finally, they will continue to support young up and coming female players as they progress

through the England talent system.”

Steve Grainger, the RFU’s Rugby Development Director, said: "We are delighted to secure a signi cant partnership with Sport England over the next four years. Since the staging of Rugby World Cup 2015 in England we have seen substantial interest in our sport.

"This renewed partnership will support us in sustaining current rugby participation across England, while also helping to grow the game, providing even more opportunities for people of all ages to play all variants of our game."

ENGLAND RUGBY AND COMIC RELIEF LAUNCH NEW 'TRY FOR CHANGE' FUNDIn partnership with Comic Relief, England Rugby has launched its fi rst funding initiative through the 'Try for Change' fund this month.

In 2016, England Rugby joined forces with Comic Relief to launch the 'Try for Change' fund. The initiative will use rugby union and the rugby union community to deliver social change in England and across the world.

Bringing together rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, it will work to tackle a number of social challenges around education attainment, social inclusion, unemployment, mental and physical wellbeing, personal development and community cohesion.

Sport can play an important role in improving the lives of millions of people across the world, bringing people together to play, learn, improve their health and bene t from shared experiences.

'Try for Change' works to promote, support and grow rugby as a tool for social good. It aims to help people reach their goals and ful l their potential, as well as deliver long-term bene ts to the wider community.

The rst initiative launched under the 'Try for Change' fund is a small grants programme aimed at supporting smaller charities, community groups and local community rugby clubs in England. Organisations can apply for between £2,500 and £10,000, for up to 12 months. The RFU will be prioritising applications which target the most vulnerable and marginalised groups, for example young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), local refugees, or young offenders.

For more details contact Tim Wainwright at [email protected]. For more information, and to apply for funding from the 'Try for Change' fund, please check the Comic Relief grants page.

Cornish Pirates

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs CORNISH PIRATES | SATURDAY 18th FEBRUARY, 2017

F inishing ninth in last season’s Championship, the Cornish Pirates are

presently fth in the current campaign.

A well-known duo comprising Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle are now co-coaches, whilst fresh faces at the club include backs Nicolas De Battista, who joined from Argentine side Jockey Club de Rosario, and former Loughborough Students player Bar Bartlett. Among other newcomers is lock Edd Pascoe who has links with the Royal Navy.

Six players dual-registered with Exeter Chiefs are Max Bodilly, Josh Caul eld, Tom Hendrickson, Jack Innard, Sam Simmonds, and Stuart Townsend.

Pre-season friendlies saw the Pirates play two away games. They lost 33-21 to Aberavon Wizards and then lost again, 35-19, at Northampton Saints. Both matches proved bene cial though, with the performance at Franklin’s Gardens especially pleasing.

League games played in September also provided plenty of encouragement, as the team won three and drew one. Results, however, took a turn from the start of October to early December, with only one league win recorded, in front of the Sky cameras, 35-26 away to Doncaster Knights.

The year would, however, end with renewed optimism, winning 22-16 away to Ealing Trail nders on Christmas Eve, and then 41-20 at home to Nottingham on New Year’s Eve. As for the start of 2017, ahead of today the Pirates have

played just one Championship game, which resulted in a narrow 25-24 home victory against London Scottish.

With regard to the British & Irish Cup, the Pirates earned a 50-24 bonus point win against Connacht Eagles in their nal pool game, which saw them through to the quarter- nals of the competition as one of the best three runners-up. Two losses in their pool games were against pool 3 winners London Irish, who they came mightily close to claiming the scalp of, especially at home, as a 16-17 scoreline suggests.

So, all appears pretty well in the far south west where, following on from news that the club was entering into a proposed joint venture with The Chiefs Super Rugby Club and Waikato Rugby in New Zealand, excitement levels have been heightened in recent months.

Also providing a little extra new year good cheer, the Cornish Pirates con rmed in January that coaching duo Gavin and ‘Paves’ had signed new contracts.

Taking up the reins as co-coaches last year, following the departure of former Director of Rugby Ian Davies, the pair have put pen to paper on two-year contracts until the end of May 2019.

Finally, the dream of playing in a stadium for Cornwall and ultimately achieving Premiership status is clearly still very much alive. A new Board is in place and it feels like a new chapter is about to begin for the club, but with a realistic awareness - as ever - that much hard work lies ahead.
