To win, all you have to do is strap your kicking boots on and take on the Kick Star challenge during half-time at a Yorkshire Carnegie home match. The challenge sees you converting five balls from the 22-yard line against the clock. The head-to-head challenge between Joe and Alex was won by Alex who managed to kick all five conversions and get back behind the posts in a remarkable 31.65 seconds. Commenting on the challenge Alex said: “It was nice to get the win! The challenge was brilliant fun and I think it is something that every club can nominate someone to have a go at. Usually when you are kicking for goal, you have plenty of time to steady yourself but I was going for speed in this one and just managed to pip Joe. I think I had the advantage by going second, so I knew what I had to do.” Ford added the competition is a great way for community clubs to raise much needed funds. He said: “This is a great partnership between Yorkshire Carnegie and Pitchero, especially as it will be community clubs who benefit the most. I am pretty sure every kicker will fancy his or her chances to get the five kicks over so the challenge will be keeping your composure to do that whilst getting between the posts as quickly as possible. Hopefully, once teams know when their kicker is up, they will come down in force to give them their support on the matchday. £5,000 would be a brilliant prize for the club who wins it and I am sure the winning kicker will be the toast of the clubhouse afterwards.” HOW IT WORKS: 1. Start under the posts, dashing to the 22-yard line when the timer starts. 2. Attempt to kick each of the five balls over the posts as quickly as possible. 3. Sprint back under the posts to complete the challenge. WIN £5,000 WITH PITCHERO STAR KICKER The challenge is to kick as many conversions as you can in the shortest time possible. The competition is running throughout the season, so keep an eye on the leaderboard to see how your effort is fairing up. The top kickers come the end of the season will be entered into our grand final, competing in one final showdown for the £5,000 prize. HOW TO ENTER To be in with a chance of winning this amazing prize for your club, all you have to do is nominate your club's best kicker to take part on behalf of your club (which could, of course, be yourself) by visiting the website at www.yorkshirecarnegie.com/ pitcherostarkicker and scroll down to the bottom of the page to enter your details. Yorkshire Carnegie will be in touch with your invitation to take to the Headingley pitch during half-time to take on the Kick Star challenge. YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs BEDFORD BLUES | SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER, 2016

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE PAIR NAMED IN ENGLAND UNDER-20sYorkshire Carnegie youngster Charlie Capps and Max Wright have been included in the England Under-20 elite player squad for the 2016-17 season.

Capps and Wright will continue Yorkshire Carnegie’s ne tradition of producing players for the England Under-20s, and follow in the footsteps of Jack Walker, Josh Bainbridge, Lewis Boyce and Max Green who were all part of the World Championship-winning squad last season.

Wake eld-born Wright, who originally played at Sandal and previously attended Silcoates School, was also in that squad, whilst Harrogate-born Capps made his Carnegie debut last season.

Both came through the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy programme and played alongside each other at Prince Henrys and for England Under-18s in recent years.

Martin Haag has named his England Under-20 elite player squad (EPS) for the 2016-17 season which will see them compete in the Six Nations and look to defend their World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Georgia.

The 32-man squad features 10 players capped at this level. Sam Aspland-Robinson, Theo Brophy Clews, Zach Mercer, Harry Randall, Max Wright and Max Malins all featured in June’s triumphant Under-20 World Championship campaign in Manchester.

Ralph Adams-Hale, Curtis Langdon, Jamie Shillcock and Paolo Odogwu have all experienced Under-20 rugby this year, while nine players featured in the recent Under-18s tour to South Africa.

The squad will come together for the rst time and train at Loughborough University this month.

The development of players through the age groups relies on strong relationships with the regional academies and clubs. Most recently, Under-20 graduates Joe Marchant and Will Evans were named in Eddie Jones’ EPS ahead of the upcoming Old Mutual Wealth Series at Twickenham.

“We have picked a strong squad with a lot of experience and it’s an exciting time because every year will bring new opportunities for different players

to impress at this level,” said Head Coach Haag.

“Players like Joe Marchant and Will Evans should be the example of what this group can achieve and, while we are proud of our recent record in major tournaments, this is the start of a new rugby journey with this talented group. This is the start of the development phase with a real focus on getting to know the players and giving them the opportunity to develop and adapt.

“We have seen a large number of these players grow through the pathway and for us it’s about challenging and inspiring these guys to be the best they can individually and as a team."

COMMUNITY UPDATEWe were delighted to be joined by six preparatory schools at the inaugural Yorkshire Carnegie Af liated Schools Festival last week. This was the rst of our Af liated Schools festivals, a new feature to the community programme for this season.

The festival was hosted by Woodhouse and saw the Under-10s from each school compete against each other over the course of the day. Attending schools were Brontë House, Fulneck School, Lady Lane School, Moorlands, Richmond House and Westville House.

The children who took part in the festival will be playing on the pitch during the half-time interval at our game against Doncaster Knights on 18th November.

Lisa McCann, Schools Development Manager, commented: “It was a fantastic event with some excellent rugby. Woodhouse Grove were outstanding hosts and ensured everybody enjoyed the day so I would like to thank their staff for all of their effort and hard work.

"We are delighted to offer our schools these opportunities and hope this is the rst of many.”

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs BEDFORD BLUES | SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER, 2016

WELCOME TO SELBY RUFCWe would like to thank Selby RUFC for hosting our rst 'On the Road' game this season and for all their hard work in putting on this British & Irish Cup xture.

Selby currently play in Yorkshire 1 and run ve senior teams with junior, mini and micros at all ages and Girls Under-13s and 15s. So far this season Selby have secured wins against Scarborough and Ripon, but have suffered four defeats which leaves them in 11th place in their league.

The history of Selby Rugby Club goes back to 1933. In 1934 they moved into their present eld and were lucky to have a stand with two dressing rooms

underneath. The last committee meeting at the Londesborough Hotel, which had been the club’s headquarters since its formation, was held on 1st November 1950.

Undoubtedly, the erection of the clubhouse was the greatest advance in the history of the club since the leasing of the ground in 1934.

Today ve sides are run, three pitches and eight changing rooms are in use, and many people enjoy the much improved facilities in the recently extended club house.

For more information on Selby RUFC visit www.pitchero.com/clubs/selby

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE OAKAPPLE GROUP HAVE EXTENDED THEIR CLUB PARTNERSHIPThe Oakapple Group logo, which currently appears on both the home and away shorts, will now also feature on the front of the Yorkshire Carnegie home shirt for the remainder of this season, starting from today’s British & Irish Cup clash with Bedford Blues at Selby.

Oakapple is a forward thinking and innovative property development group committed to excellence in everything it does. The Leeds-based company was established in 1994 and has grown into one of the largest and most successful independent property developers in the region.  This success can be attributed to their vision, versatility and the strength of the team within the Group.

Commenting on the new deal, Yorkshire Carnegie Commercial Director Rob Oates said: “We have had a fantastic relationship with Oakapple Group Chairman Philip Taylor and his team for a number of years at Yorkshire Carnegie and we are delighted to have agreed this longer term deal. Having recently announced our partnership with Crabbie’s

Ginger Beer for the away shirt, it is great news that the home shirt sponsorship portfolio is now completed also.”

To celebrate the new partnership we are offering one lucky fan the chance to win a home shirt, complete with the Oakapple Group logo, signed by the Yorkshire Carnegie squad. To win the shirt simply email [email protected] with your name, address and contact number and answer the following question: Who did Yorkshire Carnegie beat in the opening game of this season’s Greene King IPA Championship?

BRITISH & IRISH CUP: STORIES FROM ROUND ONEVictories for Cornish Pirates, Bedford, Ealing, Rotherham, London Irish, Scottish and Welsh.

With the opening round of the British & Irish cup completed we bring you ve stories from the various pools.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT EALING There was a double celebration for Rhys Crane last Saturday as he scored one of eight tries in Ealing Trail nders’ impressive 51-35 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie.

Ealing Trail nders scored 32-unanswered points against the previously unbeaten Carnegie, as they fought back from 28-12 down to secure a bonus-point victory in the rst British & Irish Cup round of the season.

Carnegie made 14 changes to their starting XV and were 16 points to the good, with a try-bonus point, but touchdowns from Phil Chesters, Seb Nagle-Taylor and Josh Davies turned the match on its head.

In a hugely entertaining xture, Trail nders scored eight tries in all, including one for 31-year-old Crane, while Carnegie contributed with ve of their own.

In the other pool 5 xture, Bedford Blues beat Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership Select 46-33 with both sides earning a try-bonus point.

CAPITAL WEEKEND FOR THE LONDONERSIt was a strong start to the cup competition for the London clubs as Irish, Welsh and Scottish all came through with victories.

London Irish, who have won all six of their Greene King IPA Championship games so far this season, continued their

strong early-season form with a 25-14 over Ospreys Premiership Select.

Rivals London Scottish also got their campaign off to a winning start with a 26-21 bonus point success over Cardiff Blues Premiership Select at Cardiff Arms Park.

And completing the set - with all three xtures away from home - was reigning champions London Welsh who also scored a try-bonus point in their 30-15 win over Munster A.

IRISH STARS MAKE INJURY RETURNSThe grit and determination of Jersey Reds and Richmond couldn’t prevent them falling to defeats against two Irish sides bolstered by returning international stars.

A battling performance from the Reds on Friday night saw them slip to a 19-6 defeat against an Ulster A side which included Ireland internationals Tommy Bowe and Dan Tuohy. Both internationals returned from long-term injuries and were selected for the B&I Cup rather than travelling to Bordeaux where Ulster lost their Champions Cup opener.

Fellow Ireland regular Sean O’Brien, who hasn’t featured for his club since January, was also in cup action last weekend as he helped Leinster A beat Richmond 68-19.

TITANS MAINTAIN HOME RECORD OVER LOCAL RIVALSLocal bragging rights in the South Yorkshire derby went to Rotherham Titans fans but they had a young gun from Gloucester Rugby to thank for their 34-17 win over Doncaster Knights.

Dual-registered Lloyd Evans scored a try, two conversions and ve penalties as he racked up 24 points for the home side throughout the afternoon.

It meant that the Titans have still not lost at Clifton Lane to their near-neighbours since 2011.

PIRATES’ SECOND-HALF CLEAN-SHEETA strong defensive effort from Cornish Pirates saw them score 13-unanswered points in the second-half of their B&I Cup game against Connacht Eagles last Sunday in Pool 3.

With the game delicately poised at 10-10 at the break, Jake Parker got the decisive try, the Pirates’ third of the game, which was converted by Laurence May.

The Eagles failed to register a single score in the second-half, with two Mitch Lam penalties drifting to the wrong side of the posts as the game ended 23-10.

Elsewhere last Sunday, Nottingham Rugby were beaten by the Scarlets Premiership Select 33-11 in Pool 4 which includes Leinster A and Richmond.

WORLD CUP LEAVES LEGACY

5

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs BEDFORD BLUES | SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER, 2016

RUGBY WORLD CUP DRIVES HIGHEST EVER RFU TURNOVER AND RECORD INVESTMENT IN THE GAME... The Rugby Football Union’s Annual Report & Accounts show an exceptional year and the positive fi nancial impact of hosting Rugby World Cup 2015.

The past year saw the highest turnover in the RFU’s history, and record investment in rugby, with pro t for rugby investment of £102.3million, topping £100million for the rst time and up 37 per cent on the previous year.

Revenues almost doubled, with total revenue increasing by £199.2million, from £207.9million to £407.1million driven by £228.1million in the year from the Rugby World Cup. In what would ordinarily be a loss-making season, the Union achieved a retained pro t of £3.9million, compared to a loss of £6.7million in 2014-15, a

move of almost £11million year on year.

The past four years’ actual rugby investment exceeded the ambitious target set by the RFU Strategic Plan by £28million.

In the past year, the RFU invested £89.8million into rugby, 17 per cent more than in the previous year, with £55.7million investment in professional rugby and £34.1million investment in rugby development.

The investment in professional rugby included all England related costs for Rugby World Cup 2015 as well as costs for the tour to Australia in June 2016.

This was the fth consecutive year of increased investment in rugby development, and included spending on a range of participation growth initiatives and delivering a lasting World

Cup legacy in the community game.

Investment in the game was facilitated by underlying revenue growth in broadcasting (up 39 per cent), sponsorship (up eight per cent), matchday hospitality and non-matchday conference and events (up three per cent), and travel revenues, with England Rugby Travel (the of cial travel operator for RWC 2015) seeing an eight fold revenue increase.

RFU CEO, Ian Ritchie, said: “This was a truly exceptional year. Despite the huge disappointment of England’s early exit from our home Rugby World Cup, by running the widely acclaimed ‘most successful Rugby World Cup ever’ we have delivered signi cant investment into rugby both at home and globally. The legacy will continue

to bene t our community clubs and the sport at every level.”

Chief Financial Of cer, Stephen Brown, added: “The signi cant nancial success of hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2015, as well as underlying growth in our businesses, results in record rugby investment at all levels.

“Because of this success, we were also able to retain pro ts of almost £4million for future investment in what would ordinarily be a substantial loss-making year.

“We are very proud to have exceeded our Strategic Plan target for rugby investment by £28million over the past four years. Ultimately 'The Union' is in a very good place nancially, which enables the game as a whole in England to bene t directly from this success.”

In summary the highlights for the year were:• Record £407.1million revenue• Pro t for rugby investment over

£100million for the rst time• Four years’ rugby investment

exceeded Strategic Plan by £28million

• Investment in rugby as a whole rose by 17 per cent over previous year

• RWC 2015 generated £228.1million revenue in year, £281.4million in total

• Value of commercial partnerships increased

• Healthy growth in playing numbe rs

• A RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam for the England senior team

• Summer success for England, Under-20s and Saxons

• Professionalisation of women’s game, with contracts for England Women at 15-a-side

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE vs BEDFORD BLUES | SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER, 2016

Bedford Blues head into this British & Irish cup tie following some impressive displays in the league after a shaky start to the season, as Simon Hutchinson reports...

W hile the 2015-16 season

was a remarkable one for Bedford Blues, in which they returned to the top four in the league - much to the surprise of former Rotherham supremo Lee Blackett who tipped them for the drop - the current campaign has been more mixed for Mike Rayer’s men.

It was a summer of comings and goings at Goldington Road with ten new faces joining the ranks - Ben Adams (Cambridge), Christian Judge (Plymouth Albion), Dan Lewis (Oyonnax), Dave Spelman (Cambridge Uni/Old Albanians), Ed Taylor, Tom James, Jacob Fields (all Loughborough

Students), Jason Hill (Glasgow Warriors/Heriots), Tom Farrell (London Irish), Will Carrick-Smith (London Scottish) - along with three more Wasps

(George Edgson, Alex Lundberg, Piers O’Conor) and seven

youngsters from Saracens (Joel Conlon,

Tom Grif ths, Hayden Thompson-Stringer,

George Perkins, Matt Gallagher, Billy Walker and Tom Whiteley) all joining the ranks.

A good pre-season campaign saw two impressive victories over Pontypridd and a hard-fought encounter with Sarries which went the way of the

Premiership and European Champions 36-21. However, the Championship season hasn’t started in the way the Blues faithful would have hoped as a disappointing opening round defeat at home to the Cornish Pirates was followed by a loss away to Jersey.

But Bedford’s fans always keep the faith and they saw just what the team were capable of in a Round Three encounter against former Premiership side London Irish. The Blues gave a superb account of themselves against the unbeaten Exiles with winger Pat Tapley crossing twice and hooker George Edgson dotting down, but ultimately Bedford came up just short as Irish held on to win 23-30.

The following week it was a case of close but no cigar for

the Blues as they went down 30-22 to Doncaster Knights at Castle Park. It was a back and forth game throughout with the lead changing hands four times, but ultimately it was the hosts who took the spoils late on as Bedford nished the game with 14 men and conceded two tries.

One thing that you can say about the Blues' new-look squad is that they never give up and they racked up their rst win of the season against Championship new boys Richmond at the start of the month. Six tries - including a hat-trick for Pat Tapley - ensured a bonus point win but they were certainly made to work extremely hard for their victory against a resolute Richmond side.

The Blues fans were delighted to see that it wasn’t a one-

off win as they followed it up the following Friday with an extremely tight 17-16 victory over Rotherham Titans. Tries from Dean Adamson and Jacob Fields, along with a Jake Sharp drop-goal, sealed the win, but what was even more pleasing was the solid defensive display from the entire squad.

Last week, attention was diverted to the British & Irish Cup with the Blues picking up a bonus point win over the Dragons Premiership Select XV. Whereas the previous week had been about defence, this encounter was about tries as ten were tallied up in total - six to the Blues and four to the Dragons. The win was gratefully received by all at Goldington Road, but the defence coach needed a lie down after the nal whistle!
