This year’s Fair Trade Campus Week was focused around providing campuses with digital-rst resources and facilitating in-person dialogue around fair trade and campuses’ unique involvement in growing the movement. Our matching process was updated to allow for more transparency between campuses and the companies who donate their time and products to this campaign. By publicly sharing campuses’ need of Fairtrade products, companies could clearly see the growing demand of products that carry the FAIRTRADE Mark. We believe that this method is a positive addition to this campaign, and allows campuses and businesses to build meaningful and sustainable relationships.

Environmental sustainability was another important focus this year. Instead of mailing standard POS kits to every participating campuses, we encouraged campuses to use what they already have and only request items they need in order to lower the carbon footprint of this campaign.

By shifting our focus from printed and physical resources, we needed to ensure that our digital materials were stronger than ever. Some initiatives we introduced this year included:

• New and engaging visual assets to help campuses discuss issues around trade justice.

• A Fairtrade mobile game that offered a fun and interactive way for students to test their Fairtrade knowledge while also giving visibility to Fairtrade products.

• A series of Fairtrade-themed GIFs were created to help campuses and partners share captivating social content.

Scaling for Impact: Highlights & Looking Forward

• Custom “I Want More Fairtrade Products on my Campus” Change.org petitions to facilitate discussions around procurement and to give students, faculty and staff a voice in the decision-making.

We also launched the National Fair Trade Campus Week Challengeto add an element of friendly competition to this campaign. We challenged campuses to engage on Twitter and Instagram by using the ofcial campaign hashtags as well as to collect the most signatures on their petition. Our Campus Week All-Star, Humber College will receive national recognition at the Canadian Fairtrade Awards, an invitation to attend the Awards in Ottawa, and a $500 cash prize to go towards their fair trade programming. Our runner up, the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus will receive a year’s worth of Fairtrade chocolate sponsored by Camino.

Through Instagram Story takeovers, we allowed our followers to witness the work of six of Canada’s Fair Trade Campus leaders. UofT Mississauga, SFU, York, uOttawa, Cégep de Sorel-Tracy and McGill took over Fairtrade Canada’s Instagram Stories over the week to share their efforts.

We see Campus Week as an integral part of growing the fair trade movement in Canada and we are excited to see what next year has in store. We want to continue our efforts in ensuring FTCW is an environmentally sustainable campaign, as well as assisting the building of meaningful relationships between Fairtrade businesses and campuses.
