ILLUMINATING YORK
3
uminating York is now in its sixth year; using modern lighting and projectionechnologies to celebrate the city’s unique architecture and history.
aking place each October, the Festival draws thousands of people to the citynd has created specially commissioned digital artworks for many of the city’sistoric buildings, including York Minster, the Yorkshire Museum & the Bar Walls, as
well as churches across the city centre.
n 2010, the Festival returns to York Minster with Rose: a spectacular work eaturing music, poetry and imagery which will light up the South Transept ofork’s most iconic landmark; as well as several smaller installations, designed tollow visitors to get close to, and interact with digital art.
With the added opportunity to visit other famous sites in the city at night, uminating York offers visitors of all ages the chance to see York in a differentght. The Festival runs from Wednesday 27 October to Saturday 30 October, from9.00 to 22.00 each night.
Illuminating York is proud to presentRose, a Son et Lumière piececreated by highly acclaimed Britishprojection artist Ross Ashton, and thesound artist Karen Monid.
The duo return for this year’s Festivalfollowing their installation Accendo, the centrepiece of the 2008 festival, which lit the facade of the YorkshireMuseum and the Abbey Ruins in
York’s Museum Gardens.
Rose, a 40 metre high artwork, willtransform the Minster’s rose windowand surrounding architecture intoa breathtaking vision of colour celebrating the Yorkshire rose. Thepiece will use high power slideprojectors to create gigantic ‘magiclantern’ effects covering the SouthTransept.
Using the centuries old rosewindow and the South Transeptof the Minster as a canvas, thisyear’s main commission willexplore aspects of the symbolismof the rose and its meaning as an
emblem of perfection, purity andlove . The visual imagery will becomplemented by poetry andMinster choral music for a completeaudio-visual experience.
