ABOUT US: A Letter from Our CEO

This past year was a transformative one for the YMCA of Springfield in many respects. As our community faced the pandemic, the YMCA of Springfield stepped up in big ways to ensure or community would come out on the other side healthy in body, mind and spirit. During this extremely trying time, we may have closed our doors, but we never stopped working for our community. We were able to connect to members and the community through our offerings of online classes. Most of us know how important essential workers were in 2020. They were the glue that kept our community together. While the essential workers watched over us, the Y watched over their children.

Although our attention was diverted to handle issues related to COVID-19, our builders continued their work, and the new Downtown YMCA was able to open on time. Closing our old Downtown Y and opening our new facility was bittersweet. It was hard to say goodbye to our old friend where so many memories had been made, but we know we will make new memories at our new facility.

You can find a gym or swimming pool or a treadmill in lots of places. But it is the Cause that makes the Y so magical. After over 147 years of service in this community, consider all the lives that were shaped and the futures changed. We really do strengthen the foundation of this community.

“Although Covid-19 “Although Covid-19 created a challenging year created a challenging year for everyone, we never for everyone, we never stopped serving the stopped serving the Springfield Community.”Springfield Community.”

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENTChild Care for Essential Workers• 1-1 Gymnastics • Outdoor Sport Clinics

At the YMCA of Springfield, we believe youth need positive role models. The Y puts caring people in children’s lives and nurtures them along their journey to adulthood so they can become active, thriving, and contributing members of society.

In 2020, we provided:

• childcare for 300 kids during COVID for parents who are essential workers.

• over 15,000 hours of safe and reliable care to children in the Springfield area who attended schools with remote learning.

• outdoor sports clinics for 1,200 children.

• over 750 one-on-one gymnastics lessons to area youth.

In 2020, we:

• called over 2,000 seniors to ensure they were safe and healthy during COVID.

• provided approximately 2,000 socially distanced indoor exercise classes.

• provided over 1,000 socially distanced outdoor exercise classes.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYMatthew Project • Saturday Strikers Bowling • SNAP • Community

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors is at the heart of our mission. The YMCA of Springfield is always looking for new ways to serve and invest in our community. Our Y strengthens communities through programming by inspiring and empowering our members to take our mission to heart.

In 2020, we:

• provided 32 Matthew Project children with a comprehensive summer camp experience.

• partnered with the Lieber Family Foundation to distribute 5,000 meals in the months of December and January to agencies in the Springfield area who serve the needy.

SAYING GOODBYE TO THE Y7

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SAYING GOODBYE TO THE YLeaving Memories • Farewell Ceremony

On November 25, 2020, we said goodbye for the last time to the Downtown Y located at 4th and Cook Streets. We are so grateful to have made so many fond memories and to have sparked relationships within the community that will last a lifetime.

YMCA members and employees stopped by the Downtown Y to leave a special farewell note on the windows with window paint.

NEW DOWNTOWN YMCABeam Signing • 2020 YMCA Time Capsule • Opening Day

On November 30, 2020, we opened our doors to the public for the first time at our new facility located at the corner of 4th and Carpenter Streets. Even during Covid, we had quite a first day.

On May 11, 2020, the Board of Directors, the Board Trustees, and YMCA employees left their mark as they celebrated a meaningful milestone in the construction of the new Downtown YMCA. They signed a steel beam that was later lifted into place at the entrance to the new building.

On Friday, September 25, 2020, a time capsule filled with messages for the future was buried in a ceremony. The capsule is located at the northeast corner of the new Downtown Y at 601 N. 4th Street.
