Meeting new friends, learning new skills and enjoying fun-filled days in a caring, supervised environment is what YMCA Day Camps is all about! We are committed to giving your child the support, care and fun that they deserve.

Registration begins March 18, 2019 online at ymcadaycamp.ca

Welcome to Camp!

YMCA Core ValuesThe YMCA is committed to helping children grow by teaching and reinforcing CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, INCLUSIVENESS and HEALTH.

It’s all about the Value BeadsAt YMCA Day Camp, value beads play an important role as a sign of character and personal achievement. As a form of recognition and encouragement, beads at camp promote positive behaviour, and are worn as a constant reminder of what we value as a camp community. Throughout the week, beads are awarded to campers for demonstrating the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, health, responsibility, and respect.

“My child counts down the days until she is at camp again. The staff has made her feel so welcomed and confident in becoming a young independent girl.”

Selecting the Right CampBefore you register for YMCA Day Camps, make sure you are selecting the right camp for your child. Here are some helpful hints to guide you in picking the right camps:

• Does your camper require support in camp? Please see page 13 for details about our Helping Hands program.

• Take the time to select camps with your child that match their interests and meet your needs.

• In order to ensure developmentally appropriate activities and programming, your camper needs to be the correct age for the camps that you have selected prior to the start date.

• At our outdoor sites, activities will be offered rain or shine. Campers should dress appropriately for the weather, and will have access to a pavilion or shelter.

• Take note of where each camp you select is located, hours at that site and the busing options available from the YMCA Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centre locations. Information about busing is available on page 19.

• Will your child require Extended Care?

• Depending on the age and location of the camp program, water play will vary. Be sure to check to see if and how often your camper will be swimming.

• Take note of the YMCA Aquatics Admission Criteria on page 19, to be sure that your child can participate in all the water activities available at the camp they attend.

• Will you require financial assistance? Refer to page 19 for more information.

Cancellation/Refund Policy• All deposits are non-refundable.

• Requests for refunds made up to two weeks prior to camp will be issued within 14 business days. All refund requests must be made in writing to the Day Camp Office at [email protected].

• Camp fees are non-refundable within two weeks of camp. Exceptions may be considered for confirmed medical reasons with proper documentation.

• Refunds will not be given if a camper is sent home for misconduct or if they are ill.

After You RegisterAfter you complete the registration process, don’t forget to read through our Day Camp Handbook at ymcadaycamp.ca to find all the information you need before camp starts. You will learn what your camper will need to bring to camp each day to keep them sun safe and to fully participate in activities. You will also find answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Junior Adventure/Maun Kiki (Ages 5-6) If your camper is ready to set off on a new adventure, then this is the camp for them! Campers will explore the great outdoors as they rotate through a variety of nature-based activities such as hikes, creek exploration, crafts, songs and more. This camp is sure to satisfy their adventurous side while helping them gain an appreciation and awareness for the outdoors.

Mini Camp (Ages 5-12) This camp offers campers the opportunity to learn and play in the great outdoors! Through team building and adventure-based

initiatives, campers will rediscover nature and appreciate the world we live in. In this camp, campers will rotate through various outdoor and traditional camp activities. Support from the Town of Fort Erie ensures every child has the opportunity to participate.

Junior Explorers/Explorers (Ages 5-6, 7-12)Campers will set out on explorations right in our backyard! Campers will experience a variety of activities planned around the theme for that week that allow them to develop their imagination and exploration skills. Explorers is for the curious camper who loves learning new things and going on exciting adventures.

A typical day at camp includes:Opening and closing circles: Our opening and closing circles set the tone for the beginning and end of the day, with a variety of traditional camp songs, and fun large group activities.

Camper group time: This small group time helps campers get to know each other. Counsellors also introduce the YMCA Bead Program.

Creative activities: Campers enjoy traditional arts and crafts programming, including “take-home” activities to share with families and friends.

Camp activities: Campers will participate in specific activities related to their chosen camp.

Structured free time: Campers get to choose from a variety of activities to further develop skills and relationships.

Traditional camp experience activities: At the YMCA every camp includes activities designed to immerse kids in the “camp experience” like cooperative games, camp songs, sports, field games, arts and crafts, swimming and more. Our counsellors mix up the activities to maintain interest and fun.

Physical activities: Ensuring kids have ample time for physical activity that is both fun and age-appropriate is part of camp life. Our curriculum ensures campers meet or exceed the daily recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

Our goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to experience adventure in an outdoor setting. Exploration of nature increases children’s creativity and imagination, while developing an appreciation for the world around them. Outdoor camps are structured in a unique way to offer campers a residential camp experience without leaving their city.

Junior Discovery (Ages 5-6)At YMCA Day Camps, we believe that every day at camp should be full of fun and discovery! From special events, value beads, camp activities and much more, this camp is designed for those times when a full-week camp experience may not fit your busy schedule. If your camper is ready for a blast of excitement, then this is the camp for them. To ensure all campers have the opportunity to develop friendships and experience skill development, a minimum registration of 3 days per 5 day camp week is required.

Discovery (Ages 5-12) Whether it is 3 or 4 days, Daily Discovery will give campers an exciting camp experience! Each day will be jam packed with fun discoveries, sports, active games, swimming, special events and more! At the YMCA we know that physical activity can contribute to children’s physical, emotional, and mental development. While participating in camp, all campers have the opportunity to meet or exceed the daily recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Campers will gain confidence in their ability to participate in a variety of recreational and sport activities through activities focused on developing their fundamental movement skills; and have the opportunity to explore different traditional and non-traditional sports in a supportive and non-competitive environment.

Tiger Athletics will be supporting Cheerleading and Ninja Camps in St. Catharines. Tiger is the fastest growing cheerleading club in Niagara, with programming based off the teamwork and comradery of their coaches, athletes and parents that forms their Tiger Pride.

Spirit Athletics will be supporting Cheerleading and Ninja Camps in Niagara Falls and Niagara West. While the organization is new, Spirit has experienced and dedicated coaches whose focus is as much on character growth as it is athletic development and success.

Cheerleading (Ages 7-12)Cheerleading Camp days will be jam-packed with all things cheerleading! Campers will learn the core principles of cheerleading - jumping, stunting, tumbling and dance – from our knowledgeable and caring coaches. This camp experience is for both non-experienced and experienced cheerleaders alike. Campers will get the chance to show off the skills they’ve learned with their new friends on Friday at our “Show Off” performance. Campers will also spend part of their day participating in traditional camp activities.

Ninja (Ages 7-12)Our unique Ninja Camp is action-packed and fast-paced. Campers will learn a combination of flips, rolls and jumps in a fun and safe environment. Their strength and agility will be tested through obstacle courses and various training techniques. Campers will use their imaginations to run up walls and crash through buildings. If your camper is filled with energy and a great imagination, this camp is perfect for them! Campers will also spend part of their day participating in traditional camp activities.

Youth Fit (Ages 10-15)This camp will give youth the opportunity to learn what they can do to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Campers will be guided through a fitness program with one of our certified YMCA Fitness Coaches, and have supervised access to fitness equipment. Each day campers will experience a new fitness class or activity. Campers will also be learning to prepare healthy recipes based on the You’re the Chef guidelines, developed by Niagara Region Public Health with a balanced life in mind. Campers will also participate in traditional camper activities for a portion of the day. Join Youth Fit to have fun while embracing a healthy lifestyle!

Junior Sports (Ages 5-6)Designed for the physically active camper, this camp is at an introductory level and emphasizes fair play, team work and sportsmanship. A portion of every day is spent learning the rules and basic skills in a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports. Campers will develop fundamental movement skills, confidence and learn the importance of staying active. If your camper is an athlete at heart then this is the camp for them.

Aquatics (Ages 7-12*)This camp is a splash! Designed to increase skills and develop an appreciation for the water, campers will participate in two swimming periods per day. One will focus on personalized instruction and goal setting while the other is recreational in nature. The remainder of the day will be spent participating in traditional camp activities such as crafts, sports and cooperative games. If your camper has a love of water then this is the camp to dive in to!

*Campers must have successfully completed YMCA Swimmer Level or equivalent to register for this camp.

They will have a chance to volunteer, participate in exciting team building activities, and build new leadership skills. Counsellor in Training (Ages 14-15) This three week program is geared towards teens who are looking to gain experience working with children and want the fun and leadership skill building that camp brings. For the first two weeks, CITs will work with a mentor to learn how to plan and facilitate camp programs, understand group dynamics and have the opportunity to become certified in Standard First Aid/CPR C, in order to work towards employment as a Day Camp Counsellor. During the first two weeks of camp, CIT’s will participate in a day trip designed to foster growth through team challenges and leadership initiatives.

During the thrid week of camp, CITs will have the opportunity to be paired with a counsellor in one of our junior camps to gain experience and practice their skills. CIT’s who successfully complete their placement week will be eligible to use 35 hours toward their high school community service component.

The development of leadership skills provides children and youth with lifelong attributes that contribute to their character development. YMCA campers gain hands-on experience working in collaboration, problem solving, developing creative solutions, and leading others in a fun and supportive environment. Not only do we develop children and youth into role models, the skills they learn at camp can be applied to teams, clubs, school projects, and down the road, their career.

YMCA Helping Hands (Ages 5-15) Helping Hands is a program that strives to provide a positive, integrated day camp experience for children and youth with differing abilities who require additional support in camp. A limited number of spaces and days are available for those requiring a helping hand in a one to one ratio. Families who are applying for Financial Assistance from the Niagara Region should complete the subsidy process before contacting the Helping Hands team.

Does your child need one-on-one support at camp? Please assess your needs using the following criteria:

• Extra support is needed in school.• Additional support or assistance is required for basic care (eg. toileting, feeding

and changing)• A physical, developmental and/or learning disability exists that affects the

safety of the participant or that of other program participants.• The participant is currently associated with a support agency.

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions or if you are unsure if your child requires one to one support, please contact the Helping Hands team at 905-934-9755 ext. 288 before April 1, 2019 to confirm the accessibility of the program location, special requirements you may have, if a Helping Hands Counsellor is required, and the suitability of the camp. A member of our Helping Hands team will do a phone intake and work with you to determine what support is required at camp.

Registration for our Helping Hands program is in high demand. The number of Helping Hands spots are limited. If no support is available, families will have the option to bring their own Independent Support Worker. Please check ymcadaycamp.ca for more details on this option.

Request List for Helping Hands opens on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 9:00 am

Please call the Helping Hands team at 905-934-9755 ext. 288 or email [email protected] to begin the registration process. Helping Hands weeks are on a first come, first serve basis. In order to serve more families, Helping Hands registration will be limited to three weeks per camper. A member of the Helping Hands team will be in touch to speak with you about camp availability and registration details in late April.

If not able to successfully complete the facility swim test, children must be accompanied by an adult/guardian (4:1 ratio) in the water in the shallow end.
