The true purpose of schooling is to prepare young men and women for life beyond the classroom. In a sense, our Yeshiva aims to itself be a מקור חיים for our students – a source of life. As a Yeshiva High School, our goal is to provide our students with the tools to succeed as educated, engaged, and committed Jews. Sefer Mishlei teaches us about four fundamental sources of life:

Educating within a culture that prioritizes these four elements will empower our students to live lives reflective of the passuk in Tehillim, “חיים מקור ך עמ י – ”כHashem is the source of all life. We choose to engage with the world around us, because it is Hashem’s universe. Our study of science and math, of language and the social sciences, of art and athletics alongside and in partnership with our learning of Chumash, Gemara, and Halacha strengthens our relationship with the Master of the universe, the true Source of Life.

”תורת חכם מקור חיים“For a smart man, the Torah is a

source of life. YMC students turn to the Torah to help guide their lives.

YMC students understand that success in life requires the develop-ment and application of wisdom and

Rabbi Dr. Elie Tuchman is a highly respected Jewish educator with more than 25 years of experience in the field. A leader in applying the principals of progressive education to Yeshiva Day Schools, he is particularly known for his pioneering approach to integrating Judaic and General Studies.

A recognized expert in building schools and communities, Rabbi Tuchman led the Oakland Hebrew Day School in Oakland, CA through its early growth, taking it from a small K-3 startup to a K-8 school nationally recognized for excellence. After relocat-ing back to the East Coast, Rabbi Tuchman became the founding Head of School of Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore, an innovative, K-8 Yeshiva Day School. Under his leader-ship, YJS thrived and became an important part of the fabric of the Central New Jersey Jewish Community.

Rabbi Tuchman received semicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Semi-nary (YU) and also earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the Azrieli Grad-uate School of Jewish Education of Yeshiva University. He also holds an MA in Com-puter Science from New York University. In addition to his role as a Head of School, Rabbi Tuchman has taught students and adults of all ages. He was an adjunct lecturer at Yeshiva College and supervised and mentored student teachers at the Azrieli Graduate School. He also continues to be active in the field of educational research. His research interests include self-efficacy and motivation, teacher training and induction, and school leadership. Rabbi Tuch-man is also a dynamic lecturer who speaks on broad range of topics, from Torah and Jewish communal issues to the brain science behind learning and how to build motiva-tion in both adults and children.

TALMUDIn many ways the primary core of our Torah studies, the Talmud program includes both in depth iyyun study of the gemara and rishonim, and a bigger picture, faster paced b’kiyut program. The students learn to identify gemara logic structures and follow the flow of the shakla v’tarya. By tracing a halacha forward in time, students come to understand and appreciate the halachic process. Emphasis is placed on helping students develop both the skills and the desire to learn Talmud on their own.

HALACHALearning Halacha through primary texts (such as Mishna Torah, Shulchan Aruch, Mishna Berurah, Aruch Hashulchan, and others) helps our students develop a familiarity with those texts and how each of them works. Additionally, by tracing back the studied halachot to their original source in the Talmud or the Chumash, student come to under-stand the halachic process.

TANACHCareful reading of pesukim and a focus on sentence and word structure enable our students to independently read and explain pesukim and perakim in Chumash They also gain familiarity with major parshanim and their approaches to under-standing the Chumash. In Navi, the students gain exposure to the texts of Nach and some of the major themes of those texts.

HEBREWHebrew is the language of the Jewish people and the primary language of the vast body of Torah literature. Today, it is also the spoken language of millions of Jews in Israel and elsewhere. In Hebrew class, students will strengthen their understanding of Modern Hebrew as well as their communication skills in reading writing and speaking Hebrew.

JEWISH HISTORYThrough exposure to primary and secondary sourc-es, students explore some of the major events and personalities of Jewish History. Through their studies, students will come to appreciate both the impact of the events of World History on the Jewish people and the impact of the Jews on the course of human history.

JEWISH PHILOSOPHYStudents explore key concepts in hashkafa, such the purpose of mitzvot, the nature of good and evil, and man’s role in the world, through study of major Torah thinkers and their writings. These texts help the students consider their own role in the world and lead them towards deeper conversations about what it means to maintain a relationship with Hashem.

LANGUAGE ARTSStudents read and discuss both fiction and non-fic-tion, identifying key literary elements. Through group discussions and individual written responses, they develop their analytic skills. Students learn to write effectively, utilizing the convention of standard written English. They write in multiple forms, using textual references and sources to make a point. Oral presentations to their peers and to broader, authen-tic audiences help the students develop both their public speaking skills and their confidence.

HISTORYStudents learn to think historically, identifying themes and patterns in history. Through exposure to primary and secondary sources, students develop an appreciation for various perspectives of historical events. Research skills are developed through guided research projects and independent preparation of class presentations. Emphasis is placed on learning lessons from the past to make today’s world a better place.

MATHOur math program helps students develop a strong conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts while developing proficiency in mechani-cal computation. Students progress through a sequence of math classes based on their level of proficiency.

SCIENCEUtilizing a hands-on, lab-based, experimental approach and authentic, problem based explora-tion, students investigate the word around them through the scientific method. During their four years at YMC, students will study Physics, Chemis-try, Biology, Earth Science, and Engineering.

DIGITAL MEDIAStudents engage with the field of Digital Media through hands-on projects and real-world activities. Our program supports students in the development of core competencies in the areas of graphic design, animation, audio production, video production, web design. Taken in the Freshman year, this course provides students with skills that they then use across the curriculum.

FINE ARTStudents are introduced to fundamentals of art including color theory and perspective, and will learn to use the elements and principles of design to express themselves artistically. Working with a variety of media, students utilize a range of techniques to develop a personal portfolio.

ADMISSION to all grades will be on the basis of an application, interview, academic assess-ment and previous educational experience. An application fee of $300 must accompany all applications. STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS for admission include successful completion of elementary and middle School in a Yeshiva / Jewish day school environment, along with a demonstrated competency in the Judaic and general education content and skills that may be expected from graduates of Yeshiva / Jewish day school. Students who have not attended Yeshiva/Jew-ish day school may be admitted if they can demonstrate comparable skills and competen-cies, or if the administration believes that they will be able to rapidly acclimate and attain such skill levels as are needed to succeed in YMC. Applicants must also demonstrate an appreciation for and an allegiance to Orthodox Jewish observance.

YMC DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE on the basis of race, color, ethnic or national origin. YMC is open to all Jewish children, as defined by Halacha. YMC is not equipped to accommodate those students who demonstrate severe grade-level deficiencies or severe behavioral prob-lems. We will assist in referrals for alternate school placements.

TUITION for the 2019-2020 school year is $17,000. As part of our commitment to sound business practices and fiscal responsibility, we have contracted with the FACTS Management Company to manage our tuition payment plan. FACTS is a tuition service with excellent credentials and references, including many Yeshivot and private schools in Maryland. Fami-lies may pay their tuition obligation in advance directly to the school, or may budget monthly payments through FACTS. The school will not directly accept monthly tuition payments by any method.

ACCEPTED STUDENTS must complete an Enrollment Agreement and sign up for a FACTS account (or pay the annual tuition in full). The FACTS management fee (currently $43 per family) and a non-refundable deposit of 10% of the annual tuition will be assessed through FACTS as part of the sign up process.

NEEDS-BASED FINANCIAL AID for families is available. Families applying for financial aid must complete an application (on-line at the FACTS website) and upload their completed 2018 tax return. All materials, including tax returns, must be submitted no later than March 15, 2019. Late financial aid applications may not be reviewed. Once financial aid awards are determined, appropriate adjustments will be made to the FACTS tuition payment plan. Should agreement not be reached between the family and the school within ten (10) days of award notification, the Enrollment Agreement shall be null and void and the deposit refunded in full.

When is the Yeshiva opening and what grades will it serve?

We plan to open in the Fall of 2019 with a Freshman class. We expect to add an incom-ing class of Freshmen in each successive year, so that we will serve the full range of 9th-12th grade in the 2022-2023 school year and graduate our first class in the Spring of 2023.

Is the high school for boys only? Are there plans for a girls division?

For the 2019-2020 school year, we plan to open only a boys division. Over time, how-ever, if there is sufficient demand, we would open a girls division as well.

What is the school’s admissions policy?

Typically, students are admitted to the Yeshiva on the basis of a completed applica-tion, letters of recommendation from previous Rabbeim and teachers, and an inter-view. YMC’s professional staff are able to meet the needs of a broad range of students. However, we are not equipped to support (and, therefore, cannot accept) students with significant academic or behavioral difficulties.

What will tuition be?

For the 2019-2020 academic year, tuition will be $17,000.

Will there be scholarships available? How will that process work?

Needs-based scholarships are available. Applications for financial aid are reviewed by a confidential committee and awards are decided on a case-by-case basis. The details of the financial aid application process are available upon request.

Who will decide any halachic or hashka�c questions for the school?

Our Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Elie Tuchman, is the rabbinic leader of the school. In addi-tion, HaRav Hershel Schachter, שליט"א, has agreed to serve as our posek and will be available to Rabbi Tuchman for any questions that arise.

Yeshivat Mekor Chaim shall admit Jewish students of any race, color, and national and ethnic origin and afford them all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the Yeshiva. YMC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, athletic and other school administered programs.

What is the dress code for the boys?

Boys should wear solid colored full length pants (not cargo pants or jeans) in navy, grey, black, or khaki. Shirts may be long or short sleeved, but must have a collar (either polo or button-down) and may be any solid color. No insignia or logos are permitted with the exception of YMC logo-wear (not yet available). Of course, Tzitzit and Kippah must be worn at all times.

Does YMC have any extra-curricular programs?

We will have a broad range of extra-curricular activities in which our students can participate. To a certain extent, the activities that we offer in a particular year are dependent on what the students are interested in, so we cannot provide a definitive list of what activities will be offered in a given year. We will pursue any activity (which is practical to implement and Yeshiva appropriate) in which a reasonable number of students plan to participate.
