2014 is off to a good start and I could not have been more proud of the Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons family.

I must first highlight the commendable effort and teamwork of each and every staff member in making 2013 a profitable and successful year. We have stepped into this year stronger than ever.

This magazine goes to prove our well-established position and capabilities, with plenty of events and initiatives worth a mention.

As we believe it is important to give back to society in whatever way we can, I am delighted to say that Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons has formed a special team dedicated to local charities across town. We hope to help those in need and provide any support the society requires.

Training and development has always been of prime importance in our organisation, and we had our teams working non-stop on various training programmes across the company.

The interviews in this issue had us speaking to Thierry Guilhot of TG Lighting, a man whose true passion is lighting design; Sandeep Mathur, the creative mind of Almoayyed Motors; and K.R. Unny of Almoayyed Properties.

The Nissan GT Academy is also back this year, for all the Gran Turismo lovers. This is your chance to make those racer dreams come true. Read all about it on page 11.

I am especially pleased to share our history with everyone out there. My father has been my inspiration and my guide for as long as I can remember. Read about our journey on page 12 to find out how it all started.

2014 Ford EcoSport- Training WorkshopAlmoayyed Motors hosted a full day programme on the recently introduced 2014 Ford EcoSport as an initiative to train their staff. The workshop equipped employees to handle customer queries in a professional manner.

University of Bahrain Career FairY.K. Almoayyed & Sons took part in the

University of Bahrain’s Career Fair. This gave students, graduates and job seekers an opportunity to meet Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, an organisation which has a strong presence in Bahrain.They met with hundreds of job seekers and students, which allowed those interested to apply for jobs in various fields within the organisation.

Sonu Duggal, HR Manager at YKA, explained, “This event is a vital tool in pushing the Bahraini work force forward, allowing us to guide people towards training and career opportunities that best suit them.”

Training for the 2014 Nissan TiidaY.K. Almoayyed & Sons organised a training workshop with a comprehensive

overview of the 2014 Nissan Tiida specifications and technicalities. The two day workshop was held prior to the launch of the car at The Dragon Resort. It also included a test drive which would further help every employee make Tiida one of Nissan’s best selling global car in at least 165 countries.

Ford Team Building EventY.K. Almoayyed & Sons

hosted a team building training programme for all the Ford employees at Al Bandar Resort. The employees were split into teams of four and competed against each other for the grand prize. Each exercise was conducted with the intention of bringing out team spirit and team work in each individual. The winning team was awarded prizes.

Bringing in a new dimension to the Electrical Lighting concept.

Golden Moments with Thierry Guilhot

Tell us about your fascination for artistic lighting. How did it begin?

25 years ago, in 1989, I started working in my father’s company. I learnt everything I needed to know about lighting and I knew that this is what I wanted to do, this was my passion. I took keen interest in the field.

This job is a mix between artistic and technical performances. Over years of training and guidance, I have learnt that to give your best to artistic lighting, you need to have a complete and thorough knowledge of the project and an open mind. This has been my passion for as long as I can remember and I love waking up to new and creative ideas of lighting.

How do you see your first projects when you look back at them now?

The first projects that I have worked on are very, very different from what I do now. Back in the day, lighting technology was very simple; you only used a maximum of three lamps to achieve your end result. But today, there needs to be a lot more technology and creativity involved. Some may be challenging, but that is what makes it all the more interesting.

What is TG Lighting Design’s objective?TG Lighting Design’s main objective is to

progress and contribute my expertise in the Middle East; after Bahrain, I hope to expand to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

I also want to change the external atmosphere, and the vision of the night with perfect lighting designs for hotels, villas, landscaping, and public infrastructures. I’m proud to say that Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons is helping me achieve this dream.

Tell us a about the joint venture between Almoayyed Contracting Group and TG Lighting Design. How has the journey been so far?

Almoayyed Contracting Group and TG Lighting Design, France, had recently signed a joint venture agreement to help boost business opportunities in the field of lighting design and

places were concerned about that sort of thing. But year after year, the knowledge and importance of lights has been successfully established and today, lighting is a main priority.

What challenges do you tend to face?One major challenge I tend to face has

to be working with low quality products. For the best result, we need to improve on the quality of the materials used to achieve the goal that has been envisioned.

Another challenge is being able to propose lighting design concepts that use solar energy instead of electrical cables.

What changes do you hope to bring about on the island?

That will definitely be the increased use of LED lights. It is truly the best way for the future.

Working with colourful lights can be overwhelming for young designers. What would you advise them in that work aspect?

Colour lighting is very important and interesting. My advice is to use less colours. Sometimes too much colour may destroy the entire lighting design.

The best advice you have received? One of the things my father taught me

was that before you start any project, you should always have a clear idea of what it is you wish to acheive and what the finished result will look like. And that the devil is in the detail; you should have full knowledge of the technical part

The objective of this venture is to continue the artistic passion and propose innovative ideas in lights with Architects, Landscape & Real Estate Promoters, where emphasis is not only on the development of lights for villas, parks, hotels interiors and exteriors, but also in the field of composition and lighting events.

At the moment, we have over 30 projects in Bahrain and I know that working together with Almoayyed Contracting Group will help in the execution of new jobs, and will further develop our clients’ professional lighting services.

In 1940, Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed established his one man trading company at Tijjar Road selling imported electrical goods and trading in sugar, tea, coffee and sandalwood beams for roofing.

He became a provision supplier to BAPCO, the British Navy and the Royal Air Force in the 1940s. In those days, he used to write his own letters and invoices for all the clients.

In the days when flying to London took 48 hours, the determined young Yousuf travelled with a group of Bahraini businessmen, where he secured his first agencies, General Electric Company and Lister Blackstone. He then began making frequent sales trips to Saudi Arabia. Proud of what

His Early Years:Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed was born in 1918. Learning to trade at the age of six, he used to buy sweets and peanuts on his way home from school and sell them to friends and family. He attended an all boys school until the age of 13, after which he was home schooled by a private teacher who focused on perfecting the English language. During his formative years, Yousuf travelled quite frequently to Bombay (now called Mumbai) on behalf of his father to learn the skills of the pearl trading business.

he had achieved, Yousuf put a sign outside the store that said, “Distributors of 41 Famous Companies”. The store was renowned for supplying popular GEC electric fans.

He was the first to import fridges to Bahrain and soon became the leading supplier of Philco ACs. In 1952, the shop was shifted to Bab Al Bahrain Road, and had three floors for trading and administration works.

In 1965, Almoayyed started selling cars and was the first to secure the German and American Ford Motor Company agency.

Developing into Real EstateYousuf was very passionate about

purchasing land and real estate. In 1961, he and his brother, Abdulrahman, decided to develop the site of their former family home. The building was ready for occupation five years later for both commercial and residential purposes.

In 1966, he bought three large buildings in Adliya and a couple of years later, he acquired a 20,000 square meter plantation near Sanabis.

In 1966, Yousuf Almoayyed opened his first villa complex known as Farouk Garden, which is one of Bahrain’s first compounds for the expat market.

Farouk Almoayyed, Yousuf’s eldest son joined the business. His first job was a salesman in the Bab Al Bahrain store.

The inspirational leader and entrepreneur, Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed, passed away in 1996. He was succeeded by Farouk Almoayyed, the present Chairman, who diversified the business further by buying

Ashrafs and expanding Almoayyed Contracting Group. He also developed the real estate business and constructed the tallest tower in Bahrain at the time, the fifty story Almoayyed Tower in Seef, among other projects

Giving Back to Society

Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, an organisation known to be largely involved in local charities now has a dedicated team for this very purpose. Yousuf & Aysha Almoayyed Charity, a part of Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, headed by Salwa Yousuf Almoayyed was founded in November 2013. The committee members include Mona Almoayyed, Amal Almoayyed, and Mashael Farouk Almoayyed. With the hope of helping those in need, the committee provides support to various charity sectors, including societies, orphans, and individuals with special needs.

Women’s Professional NetworkThe Bahrain Mobility International,

with support from the Women’s Professional Network, hosted the 1st Annual Bahrain Mobility International Disabled Art Exhibition. Aiming to work together in building a better working world, the group consists of Amal Almoayyed, Marjan Modara, Narise Kamber, Rasha Khunji, Dalia ElMardi, Andrea Antal-Al Borno, Shahnaz Pakravan, and Doris Martin. A variety of artwork by talented disabled Bahraini artist, Rabab Al Derazi, and Ashrafs merchandise were displayed for sale at the event. All proceeds went to the Bahrain Mobility International.

Electronic Centre at Al Sanabel Orphans Care SocietyYousuf & Aysha Almoayyed Charity Centre made a donation to Al Sanabel Orphans

Care Society. The donation consisted of an Electronics Centre, which is fully equipped with computers and other tools required to enhance the education of the orphans. Amal Almoayyed, member of the charity’s committee, commented, “We have donated this Electronic Centre to ensure that Al Sanabel is well equipped with the latest technologies, including touch screen advancements, making sure that the youth receive the best educational tools that will further improve their learning experiences and develop new skills.”

Tell us a bit about yourself.I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate

with a Postgraduate MBA in Marketing. My entire 23 years of work experience has been in the automotive industry, out of which, 16 years has been in the GCC: 8 years in Oman and 8 in Bahrain.

Tell us about Bahrain’s automobile industry and Almoayyed Motors’ role in it?

Bahrain has a very dynamic car market. Owning a vehicle in Bahrain is a necessity rather than a luxury, and with the changing economic dynamics, the demand still needs to be satisfied. As one of the major contributors, we exploit all opportunities that come our way. To be successful, it is important to stay ahead of the competition by investing in infrastructure and training programmes.

Are you a car buff? If so, what is your dream

car?Having spent

23 years of my professional life in the

automotive industry, I am definitely a car buff. There is always so much to learn and implement.

I love the Shelby for its sheer pace and grace and the

Raptor for its bold and aggressive design. So my dream car would be a Shelby Raptor.

A moment in your career that you will always cherish.

It’s been a very exciting journey for me in this great organization since 2005. I was fortunate to be given the responsibility to head the Ford division as General Manager. The dynamism involved in managing this division is what gets me out of bed each morning, excited to come to work, and get involved in the various aspects of managing people and processes that can provide the

best service experience to our customers.

What qualities should a good GM possess? Describe yourself as a boss.

An efficient General Manager should be a dynamic role model for the team, and one who loves challenges. To constantly be on top of the game is what counts. The ability to revisit operational areas and take timely corrective measures to achieve the highest level of efficiency will be a testimony of performance.

In my case, it is the sheer dynamism involved that keeps my adrenalin levels high. To continuously and consistently think of ways to maintain an ideal work environment where each member is provided with an adequate space for learning, development, and sharing is a challenge that I enjoy delivering. We have been able to successfully demonstrate this by registering a growth in market share even in the most turbulent periods.

I strongly believe that the vision the business has set must be clearly understood by each employee. As a leader, my task is to set a clear direction towards achieving the company’s objectives by creating an environment that respects and rewards contributions made by the team.

What is in store for Almoayyed Motors future?

Almoayyed Motors Bahrain is one of the fastest growing dealerships in the GCC. Tell us a little bit about your journey with Y.K Almoayyed & Sons.

My journey with Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons began in 1992, and in 1994 with Almoayyed Properties, to be specific.

I have had the privilege of working with three generations of Almoayyed Family. The guidance, inspiration and encouragement I have received from our late Chairman Mr. Yousuf Khalil Almoayyed and the other Directors has helped reach this position and become who I am today. I will always be grateful and thankful for every opportunity I have been given.

For any property to attain the expected target, it needs to have a driving force behind it. The Bahrain property market has witnessed a lot of ups and down, and yet, Almoayyed Properties has always seen maximum occupancy. This is only because of the undeterred suppor t from Mr. Farouk

Almoayyed, Mrs. Layla Almoayyed, Mrs. Mona Almoayyed and the entire Almoayyed Family. Worth mentioning are the numerous interesting experiences I have had while working with Mrs. Hala Almoayyed in major projects like Farouk Garden, Curtain Wall works of main office building, and Almoayyed Suites. They say you need

to have confidence in your team and I’m thankful that Mr. Mohammed Almoayyed has always had confidence in me to finalise projects, especially in the Dubai market.

Tell us about your role at Almoayyed Properties.

As a Manager, I deal with most aspects of Almoayyed Properties, and we have

a dedicated finance team run under Mr. Vinod Nair.

When you see consumers occupying properties that your team has worked so hard to put up is when you actually feel proud. I give utmost priority to attain maximum level of occupation at all our properties by ensuring that every existing and new tenant receives excellent services and amenities.

What is your view of the real estate and property industry in Bahrain and where do you see it a

few years from now?At present, the property market specific to

certain areas is facing challenges. However, I strongly feel that the market will look up a few years from now. Various projects that were on a standstill are now resuming construction. It is beginning to look like a good year.

What sets Almoayyed Properties apart from the others in Bahrain?

What sets us apart from other real estate companies in Bahrain is the Almoayyed name, the excellent service provided to the tenants, friendly approach of our staff and proper and timely maintenance.

Your proudest project with the organisation?

My proudest project is Almoayyed Suites in Mahooz, a state of the art building with several facilities.

What is your idea of a perfect work environment?

An Ideal work environment can only be created while working as a team. Getting along with each other, maintaining good and friendly relationships with your superiors and subordinates is necessary in every organisation. Add motivated staff and team building activities to the mix and it’s an ideal work environment.

Any surprises for Almoayyed Properties in the pipeline?

Yes, we are always up to something new! There is a new warehouse project in Dubai, a new website is underway and special rent packages for some of the residential compounds

Bid FarewellY.K. Almoayyed & Sons bid farewell to three employees who

have been part of the team for many years. Samuel George, Alex Cherian, and Jaffar Ali Abdulla were given cash awards as a token of appreciation. We wish them all the best for the future.

Health CheckY.K. Almoayyed & Sons’ EDMAJ Programme hosted a medical

camp for it’s employees. A basic health check up was carried out for each employee by a team of doctors from Al Hilal Hospital.

Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons Staff Luncheon Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons held a staff luncheon for all the

employees to celebrate the Prophet’s Birthday. The lunch gathering was held at the head office in Manama.

Diligent Employees AwardedThe Ministry of Labour honoured employees from Y.K.

Almoayyed & Sons for being ‘Diligent Employees’. Redha Al Turaifi from Nissan Sales Department and Sayed Hassan Talib from Ashrafs Retail Sales Department were awarded by the Labour Minister at this prestigious event.

Renault Sponsors the Bahrain Paddle ChallengeRenault was the Gold Sponsor for the annual charity challenge, Paddle

Bahrain, which in association with Bahrain Diabetes Society aims to raise funds and public awareness on Type 2 Diabetes. The money raised from the event was used to purchase two insulin pumps for two diabetic patients.

Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons Launches Dongfeng VehiclesIn March 2014, Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons became the exclusive dealer of

Dongfeng passenger vehicles in the Kingdom and launched the S30, one of the brand’s best selling sedans. The event was held under the patronage of Farouk Yousuf Almoayyed, Chairman of the YKA Group. Top level YKA and Dongfeng officials were present on this occasion.

The New Nissan Patrol LaunchThe all new 2014 Nissan Patrol made its grand entry at

the Bahrain Air Show earlier this year. It has been crowned with the announcement of styling enhancements to carry the Hero of All Terrain into the fourth year of its current generation.
