100 ItemsRECENTLY I HAD A WONDERFUL conversation with a busi-nesswoman who shared with me her approach to greeting the newyear. On New Year’s Day, she starts by clearing her space—she takes100 items she no longer has use for and either donates or discards. Shestates that this cleansing ritual opens space for new energies and situ-ations for growth. The start of a new year brings enthusiasm, motivation and a posi-

tive light to have a clean slate and new beginnings. It is filled withpromises to oneself to be happier, healthier, compassionate, tolerant, disciplined—whatever challenge or issue that calls for resolution fromthe previous year. Somehow, this year feels different from any other in the past; it

contains the swirling spirit of lightness, a collective change of heartamong us all and a new awareness of who we are. It offers an opportu-nity to look deeper into our hearts and find what is truly important inthis life.In light of this new and different feel, I will approach 2013 with a

new ritual and try the100 items cleansing. I know very well there arearticles of clothing that should be donated and file folders of papersthat need shredding presently in my space! In this issue, we offer ideas and information to fill the open spaces

that you have created; tips for making the right decisions for yourfinancial wellbeing, the technology behind Endermologie, a wonder-ful introduction to Dr. David Villarreal, tools for dealing with a fewlegal challenges, understanding Functional Medicine and much more.Whether you feel more centered by using a list of resolutions or

clearing your space to welcome the new, I wish you the very best as wegreet the new year. May you have good health, joy in your heart, andabundance on all levels!Thank you, Michele for sharing your words of wisdom and light!

With Peace, Love, Blessings and Gratitude,

“What frustrates me more than anything is that we tend to bethe last resort for many with illnesses as an adjunct to theirimproving health,” said Villarreal, DDS, a board certified biologi-cal dentist (IABDM) with a practice in Newbury Park calledCenters for Healing.

“We have a combined 40-plus years experience in holistic/bio-logical dentistry, along with certain protocols not found any-where else,” Villarreal explained. “We also pride ourselves inworking with many different types of practitioners to helpattain the best possible outcome for their and our patients.”

HOLISTIC DENTISTRY DEFINEDVillarreal describes holistic dentistry as the use of the least reac-tive materials for your body and the unrecognized impact thatdental toxins can have on overall health.

“Having a healthy mouth is the first step in the overall health ofthe whole body,” Villarreal said.

That’s because the mouth, being the most absorbent vehicle ofthe body, can slowly absorb and spread unwanted ingredientsthat have been ingested to various parts of the body.Chemicals, over time, can lead to a variety of diseases, sick-nesses and even cancers.

“Every organ and every part of your body is directly linked to aspecific tooth or area of the mouth via meridians—or energyhighways—utilizing Chinese medicine,” Villarreal said. “We pro-vide all phases of dentistry along with placing an emphasis on

what will be the best materials, sequence and protocols that will bene-fit your overall health.”

UNIQUE PRACTICEVillarreal’s most popular service is thesafe removal of mercury and heavymetals, supported with IV vitamin C.

“We provide safe mercury amalgamremoval which is imperative for thehealth of both patients and practition-ers,” Villarreal explained. “Removal ofmercury filling or amalgams, and othertoxic metals from your mouth, canreduce both the chronic exposure tomercury vapor as well as the electricalcurrents that are created by the con-tact of different metals in fillings andcrowns.”

Serving clients of all ages, Centers forHealing provides mercury vapor aswell as electrical testing and ozonedentistry not found in many dentaloffices.

“Although controversial, these currentsare potentially harmful because theyblock the meridians and bio-energeticfields of your body,” Villarreal contin-ued. “In order to ensure that yourhealth is not compromised, an integralapproach which includes nutritionalcounseling, special air filters, a specialoxygenated water system, negative iongenerators, ozone, oxygen masks andrubber dam is used for mercury andother toxic metals.”

INSPIRATION BEHIND CENTERS FOR HEALINGBorn in Los Angeles and raised in Torrance, Villarreal is aresident of Westlake Village who enjoys surfing, snow-boarding and skiing. He has two sons: 19-year-old Jake, asophomore at Loyola Marymount University; and 17-year-old Zachary, a senior at Agoura High School.

Villarreal’s interest in holistic dentistry began in 1992 whenhe received a book written by Dr. Hal Huggins entitled It’sAll in Your Head. “He has been my major mentor sincethen,” Villarreal said.

Villarreal was also motivated to enter the field of holis-tic/biological dentistry by his mother, who was born andraised in Mexico City. “She taught me at an early age thebenefits of herbal remedies along with alternative treat-ment modalities,” recalled Villarreal, 54. “Therefore I wasopen from the start and it’s also why I decided to formu-late my own natural oral care line called Estrella, whichmeans star in Spanish.”

He was inspired to open the Centers for Healing when hewas working part-time in Scranton, Pennsylvania with Dr.Blanche Grube, who has extensive training in homeopa-thy, nutrition, iridology, colon hydrotherapy, neural thera-py and acupuncture.

“We’ve known each other since meeting at our first Dr.Huggins’ seminar in 1992 and since then have been greatfriends,” Villarreal said. “We decided it would be great tohave another office on the West Coast to provide the sametype of dentistry we are practicing on the East Coast.”

The mission of the Centers for Healing “is to help youachieve your best physical, dental and emotional healthas safely as possible and in as short a time period as pos-sible,” Villarreal said. “My goal is education—we can strivefor people to be proactive instead of reactive in theiroverall health.”

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANTTHINGS I HAVE LEARNED IN MYPRACTICE AS A FINANCIAL ADVI-SOR IS THAT HOW MUCH MONEYA PERSON MAKES ALMOST NEVERDETERMINES WHETHER THEYARE A SAVER AND POTENTIALINVESTOR. if i meet people with identicalincomes, one will find it impossible to start asavings plan, and the other will find itunimaginable not to have one.

the reader can easily guess which person hascredit card debt and which has an ira. itmight come as a surprise, though, that thelifestyles of these two individuals are notmuch different. the saver usually isn’t mak-ing any major sacrifices. She is simply makinga series of small, smart choices.

Darren Hardy makes the point powerfully inhis book, The Compound Effect. Small, smartchoices consistently applied over time pro-duce major results. if you keep no other reso-lution this year, i challenge you to resolve toread this provocative little book.

think about it this way: two birds take flightfrom the same branch—one flies directly for-ward, and the other flies away at a slightangle. at first, the different trajectory is hard-ly noticeable, but after only a few minutes inthe air, they will end up in different trees.

a difference of only a few degrees determineswhether an airplane that takes off in losangeles ends up in new york or miami.

SAVING A MERE$2 PER DAYKEEPS MORETHAN $700 INYOUR POCKETAFTER A YEAR.

14 |

By David W. Machacek

Small,Smart financial DeciSionS

Page 15: YHC MAGAZINE

in the realm of personal finance, the same principles apply. asmall increase in personal savings, a small decrease in investmentcosts, or a modest change in spending habits can have powerfullong-term effects.

Saving a mere $2 per day keeps more than $700 in yourpocket after a year. with compounding at a modest return of 4percent, saving $2 a day becomes almost $3,800 in five years and$8,400 in 10 years. Saving $2 a day is not going to make you amillionaire, but don’t underestimate the power of small savings.

Sometimes small cost savings can also be beneficial for yourphysical, mental and social health.

Save gas by walking to lunch instead of driving. tento 20 minutes of walking every day will give you moreenergy and improve your cardiovascular health.

Avoid eating alone. we eat less and make smarter choices when we eat in the company of others.

Practice making payments before making a majorpurchase. use an online calculator to figure out thepayment on that new car, and start making the pay-ments into a savings account to make sure they arecomfortable in your budget. financial stress is a rela-tionship and health killer, and you can reduce it bytesting yourself before taking on a major financialobligation. Having a larger down payment will saveyou money on interest.

Get involved in your community. you might have heard about the multiplier effect of giving.volunteering is more rewarding and entertaining thangoing to a movie and it is a lot less expensive.Personally, being involved in my community has beengood for my business, good for my social life, and goodfor my finances, to say nothing of my soul. Because ivolunteer, i make more money, have more friends, andspend less on meals out and entertainment.

you might notice that the financial benefits of these examplesare almost incidental. that’s right. a healthy lifestyle is good foryour pocketbook, just as financial security is good for yourhealth and well-being.

whether it is diet, exercise, or financial habits, small changes areeasier to make than dramatic resolutions, and they are far morelikely to stick.

Planning for life’s transitions: tHe enDJourney

HUMAN BEINGS HAVE USED THE CULTUR-AL ARTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY TO CON-VEY THEIR INNERMOST EMOTIONS ON LIFEEXPERIENCES. they have been powerful tools forexpressing timeless issues of fear, faith and fantasy aboutthe end journey that intrigue each new generation. yetcontemplation and verbalization of death and dyingcontinue to be commonly shunned. the ramificationsof a lack of understanding of options for care and com-munication with loved ones, doctors, and spiritual lead-ers in preparation for passing can result in unrecognizedor misunderstood wishes, as well as stress and heartachefor loved ones and friends that can resonate long afteryou are gone. education, preparation, and conversationare key components to assuring your wishes are hon-ored, rights protected, and quality of your end days max-imized to the greatest extent of the law. your actionsnow will also convey love, respect and compassion tothose who will one day be left behind.

THE CONVERSATIONHealthcare Provider: your primary care physicianmay be doing a great job of keeping you well now, but isthat same person prepared to help you transition withgrace and dignity and pass in accordance with yourwishes? if you are not satisfied with your doctor’s per-spective, look elsewhere for a compatible care provider.ask your doctor to clarify potential benefits and conse-quences of each item on the advanced HealthcareDirectives list. you will then be better prepared tocomplete it and the PolSt (Physician-ordered life-Sustaining treatment) form. few know about the

PolSt form, a brightly colored document that effectively communi-cates patient wishes, states medical orders and includes a promise byhealthcare professionals to honor those directives. emergency roomphysicians prefer it as a guide on how to respond to critical care situa-tions. go to www.capolst.org for more information.

Estate Planning Attorney: anyone 18 or older should have a trustand/or will. it can be challenging to word a trust and Durable Power ofattorney for Healthcare documents so your wishes are not subject tointerpretation. Stating that you want to be “let go” once the quality oflife you had once enjoyed is gone, for instance, can become grounds forheated debate and strife between decision makers and loved ones. yourlife could, as a result, be extended beyond the point when you wouldhave preferred to pass.

Healthcare professionals encourage designating only one person to repre-sent you in addressing pressing matters pertinent to your care with fami-ly members and responding back to them with a consensus on how toproceed. choosing multiple parties for this role sets the stage for grid-lock induced by differences in personalities, stress, the burden of makingan irreversible decision, and other factors.

Spiritual Mentor: Some religions and ethnic groups have dogma forlife’s end care. violation of those guidelines can be very distressing. ifyou are a person of faith, whatever that faith may be, talk with your men-tor about spiritual support in your final days and guidance for loved onesthereafter. encourage communication between that person, your doctorand social workers.

Loved Ones: it may not be easy, but it will be a relief to loved ones ifyou initiate conversation as to your wishes. if at all possible, do this whileyou are well and able to speak for yourself and when everyone can sitdown together. consider videotaping the session to document yourexpressed wishes in the event of a future dispute.

CARE CHOICESAggressive vs. Palliative Care: Palliative care is modified medical main-tenance during the natural progression to death. we all feel entitled tothe best modern medicine has to offer, but consideration should be givento quality of life versus longevity.

Hospice: Hospice is a non-profit organization of competent, compas-sionate staff that provides aggressive pain and palliative care manage-ment, and spiritual and social support to the terminally ill. Directives forcare are carefully documented. a booklet is provided for family membersto help them understand and cope with changes through which theirloved one will transition until their demise. whereas a staff member andHospice physician are always on call, on-site visits are generally limited to2-3 times per week. their services can be provided in the home or in afacility. Pertinent costs are often covered in large part, if not whole, byhealth insurance.

failure to accept that the health of a loved one is not going to be restored canresult in a delay in acquiring Hospice services and appropriate pain control, andcause undue suffering.

Suicide, Assisted Suicide: Suicide is a personal choice. assisted suicide continuesto be hotly debated and in most states, is a murderous act for which the perpetra-tor is held legally accountable whether it was motivated by hopelessness, love, greed or contempt. By helping take someone’s life, the accomplice’s future isdestroyed. Suicide negates rights to life insurance payouts and can have profoundemotional impact on surviving loved ones. flippant comments about taking one’slife to avoid the natural dying process are sometimes made to circumvent realityand with the potentially false assumption that person would have the physicaland/or mental agility to carry out a life-ending act. major life-altering medicalissues often come without forewarning.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONSPreparing for Emergencies: if you decide to continue living on your own as youage, a list of your medical issues, medications, healthcare providers and emergencycontacts, as well as a copy of your advanced Healthcare Directives and PolStform, should be kept at your bedside and in your purse or wallet at all times. theaHD and PolSt documents do no good if they are not immediately available tohospital staff members who have to make split-second decisions on how to addressacute issues.

9-1-1 Services: if you call 9-1-1 for an urgent medical need, you have hired emer-gency personnel to make every effort to stabilize you until which time responsibili-ty for your care is transferred to emergency room physicians. your wishes cannot,by law, be honored while you are in transit.

Home-based Care: more and more people areelecting to have home-based care. careful con-sideration should be given to the extent to whichloved ones might be able to help you in that set-ting and cope emotionally, physically and finan-cially. round-the-clock care can be expensive, and qualified caregivers will be in great demandand possibly short supply as more baby boomersfall into a position of need in the future. also, in

the latter stages of life, more frequent trips to doctors’ offices and the hospital mayoccur which can be distressing for family members and require costly transporta-tion by ambulance. everyone should have a practical backup plan.

Healthcare Costs: no one likes to put a price tag on their life, but meeting babyboomer needs in the next few decades is going to be costly. we all are going tohave to bear some responsibility for not burdening younger generations and ourcountry with enormous healthcare debt.

Dying is a fact of life. Planning and preparing for our departure is an obligation ofevery adult. once addressed, life can continue with gusto!

endermologie treatments can promote collagenformation and elasticity, which ultimately tight-en, tone and sculpt the face. “this is all done byusing a device that is non-surgical, noninvasiveand all natural,” mills explained.

mills also uses endermologie for pre- and post-surgical sites. “Doctors send me patients whoneed a healthy, speedy recovery from procedureslike liposuction and facelifts,” she said. when itcomes to sports injuries, “endermologie is capa-ble of a long list of things it can do for muscles, tendons and ligaments. it works with removinginflammation and removing scar tissue.”

endermologie also helps alleviate cellulite. “ithelps remove fat and toxins out of their cells bycreating lypolisis,” mills explained. “it has thecapability to sculpt the body by tightening and

toning up the cells by creating your own fiber-blast to comealive again. fibroblast is what creates your collagen and elastic-ity. So we all want our fibroblast very active.”

mills’ machine is approved by insurance companies with itsown cPt code, therefore, “i am able to help my clients by sup-plying them with a super bill.”

after experiencing endermologie, “95 percent of my clients hada positive result with their endermologie treatment within 24hours after their session,” mills said.

on the therapeutic side, endermologie helps drain, mobilize, relieve and stretch scar tissue. “there are also pro-grams to tighten, tone and sculpt on the beauty side,” millsexplained. “each setting is programmed to know how deep togo and what pulsation it will run and how it wants to stimulatethe cells. it is adjustable on my end so i can make each sessionenjoyable and always without pain.”

when it comes to aesthetics, endermologie can sculpt, toneand alleviate the appearance of wrinkles. “we focus on the face, neck and chest,” mills said. additionally, endermologie “cancreate lypolisis, which is the process of removing fat and tox-ins directly out of the cells. this is followed with sculpting andtightening the skin.”

“a popular endermologie treatment involves removing scar tis-sue from diabetic injections and pricking,” mills said. She alsohelps women with breast encapsulations, which is hardenedscar tissue around the breast implant.

mills also uses the machine for c-sections, scar tissue, as well aspost-surgical sites, old or new. “i use it for arthritis, fibromyal-gia, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, tendinitis, pulled liga-ments, back pain, sinus and the lymph system.”

mills has worked on scar tissue with small children who havebuilt up scar tissue on their fingers, toes and stomach wherethey prick and insert their shot. “By removing all the scar tis-sue, clients report that their medicine works better—their nee-dles go in easier because they are no longer hitting scar tissue.”

for those considering endermologie, “we work by appoint-ment only. call and email us for an appointment to come infor a free consultation where we will sit down and discuss thecondition and what i suggest for the treatment plan. then wecan get started.”

HealtH view 3 resolve more pateince

resolve to Be morePatientTHE REASON YOU’RE HAVING ANISSUE WITH PATIENCE IS BECAUSEWHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT INFRONT OF YOU—YOUR WIFE’SREQUEST OR YOUR KID’S SOCCERGAME—IS COMPETING WITHSOMETHING ELSE, SOMETHINGTHAT’S NOT IN THAT MOMENT.

to examine your challenge of being patientwith your family requires you to examinewhat’s going on in your cluttered head. whatare you thinking about—work? finances?Doubts and fears? are you comparing your-self to others? are you thinking about thecar, house, job, or woman you’d rather havein your life? are you making each momentmore about you rather than the people youcare about?

whatever it is, it isn’t with you at themoment. But it is most certainly impactingyour relationships and your ability to be thebest father, husband or son you can be.

BEING CONSCIOUSto be present we have to start getting con-scious. most of us start out fairly unconsciousas men. what i mean by conscious is payingattention to what’s happening to youmoment by moment. it means acknowledg-ing the feelings that are shooting throughyour brain, and the tension that’s mobilizingin your gut, chest, throat, or head. these arethe clues, the signs that you’re not in thepresent moment.

understanding what’s happening to you inthe moment will give you the opportunity tomake new, conscious decisions, and to bemore patient.

for instance, let’s imagine your wife is tellingyou about a frustrating situation that hap-pened for her at work today. She goes intosome detail about a conversation she hadwith a salesman regarding a computer com-ponent she needs to purchase for the office.it’s a simple story. the sales guy wasn’t veryprofessional or helpful, and your wife wasn’tgetting the information or help she needed.

that’s the moment. all that’s required is foryou to listen. But you don’t—just listen.

By Wayne M. Levine

UNDERSTANDINGWHAT’S HAPPENINGTO YOU IN THEMOMENT WILL GIVEYOU THE OPPORTU-NITY TO MAKENEW, CONSCIOUSDECISIONS, AND TOBE MORE PATIENT.

Page 23: YHC MAGAZINE

Perhaps you had your own interactions that day with idiots whoweren’t helpful. you know all about that. Besides, she was askingthe wrong questions or not even looking for the right component.you know about this stuff, too. you’re getting a little impatient.

you can cut this conversation short—and obviate the need to hearthis annoying tale again—by correcting your wife and letting herknow how she should have handled the salesman, and what com-ponent she actually needs. it makes perfect sense. you’re just beinghelpful, right?

well, not particularly. your ego, your inability to shift gears fromwork to home, or just your ugly insecurities and reactive need tobe right, has caused you to bring your lack of patience to yourrelationship rather than your open heart, love, compassion, orempathy.

imagine if mr. Patient had shown up in that moment with yourwife. imagine if that daddy was present and available to share themany awesome moments we can miss with our kids.

DEVELOPING PATIENCESo, how do you develop patience? what work is necessary to getout of your own way so you can be in the moment and enjoyyour family?

this isn’t easy work and it won’t happen overnight. it’s really atthe core of who you are as a man. it’s a reflection of where you arein your journey toward manhood and away from being a needyand impatient little boy.

Here are a few suggestions to put you on the path toward greaterpatience for yourself and for your family:

many books are available that’ll help you toslow down and start paying attention to what’smotivating your actions and causing you to beimpatient.though it takes time to feel comfortable withmeditation, it slows your thought process andgives you the space to clear your mind and toopen up to new ways of relating to your worldand to your family.Develop trusting relationships with men. thisis where you’ll get the ongoing support andaccountability you’ll appreciate as you makechanges in your life to be the best father, hus-band, and leader you can be.

last piece of advice—stop lamenting. make a commitment todayto begin something new with the intention of being that extreme-ly patient and loving man for your family—and for yourself. canyou think of a better way to start your year?

HEARTBURN ORIRRITABLE BOWELSYNDROMEinstead of just ordering an antacid oranother drug to get rid of the symp-toms of heartburn or irritable bowelsyndrome, a functional medicine prac-titioner would ask the question, what is causing these symptoms? researchshows that routine stool tests can be 5-20 percent accurate. using specificfDa approved labs testing the Dnaof the bacteria, virus, yeasts or parasitesis 99.99 percent accurate. these spe-cialty tests can also determine how youare digesting your food and absorbingyour nutrients. your heartburn orgerD can also be due to hidden foodallergies or gluten. accurate gluten testing requires specialty labs.

HORMONE IMBALANCEcomplete testing of thyroid hormone, adrenal function, including four cortisol tests in one day, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone isextremely important for your physicaland mental health.

NEUROTRANSMITTERS (NT)Specific labs can test serotonin, gaBa, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, glutamate and cortisol.Psychiatrists are the only medical specialists that do not test the organthey are treating… the brain. they just prescribe in order to treat thesymptoms.

once the labs are done the patient can be treated with specific amino acidsand nutrients that the body uses tomake more of the individual nt. the patient feels better, repeat labsshow the changes and there are no side effects.

additional tests available through JohnHopkins university are helpful inassessing brain function.

TOXINSwe are flooded with toxins every day.toxins from the air we breathe, thewater we drink, food we eat, personalskin care products, dental work , mer-cury in vaccines and many othersources that fill our bodies and causemultiple illnesses and unexplainedsymptoms. your body can easily betested and the toxins can be removed.

ADDICTIONSassessing the addict in order to correctthe bio-chemistry, remove toxins, sup-port nt, and improve their overallhealth are important tools in theirrecovery and in sustaining recovery.

avoiding addictions is an extremelyimportant responsibility for physicians.the number one cause of addictions ispharmaceutical drugs.

NUTRIENT TESTINGare you eating a healthy diet? Do youwonder if you need vitamins, mineralsor supplements? maybe you are takingsome but not enough. maybe you aretaking too many. a simple blood testcan determine your nutrient status.the only way we live is by the air webreathe, the water we drink and thefood eat. finding out what nutrientsyou need, what foods contain them, and what supplements you may need iscritical to prevention, getting well, andstaying healthy and energetic.

the list of available labs and other testsis extensive and are used as indicatedfor the individual patient.

COMPREHENSIVETREATMENTmost imbalances in the functions of sys-tems can be addressed; some can be com-pletely restored to optimum functions, andothers can be substantially improved.Prevention is paramount. virtually everycomplex, chronic disease is preceded bylong-term disturbances in the body’s func-tion. the functional medicine practition-er examines a wide-array of available inter-ventions and customizes a treatment planfor the individual.

this form of advanced medicine expandsour tool kit. it is an integrative, science-based healthcare approach. this practicelooks “upstream” to consider the complexweb of interactions in the patient’s histo-ry, physiology, and lifestyle that can leadto illness.

treatments may include a combination offood changes, medical foods and nutri-tional supplements, medications if neces-sary, detoxification programs, counselingon lifestyle changes, exercise, or stress-management techniques like reiki andhypnotherapy.

I KNOW WHAT YOUR THINKING, WHAT ISFUDGE DOING IN A HEALTH MAGAZINE? all i cansay is that if you’re going to treat yourself to something sweet,Kelsey’s anytime fudge is something you can feel good about.

i met Kelsey Barkan through a mutual friend a few yearsago and i have been inspired by her, both personally andprofessionally.

She definitely meets the health-conscious mark in the worldof fudge and takes it a step further with her sugar-free andgluten-free, vegan baked goods.

i recently caught up with Kelsey in ventura at the local com-mercial kitchen where she makes all her fudge and vegantreats. She talked with me while packaging some of her sconesand cookies for market. (i even got to nibble on a deliciousvegan oatmeal cookie during our interview!)

Kelsey has been making fudge for over a decade and officiallystarted her business in 2008. it came to be after years of mak-ing holiday treats for her co-workers and friends. She foundan easy fudge recipe and has been making tasty (and healthy)improvements ever since. Kelsey added vegan baked goods toher product line a few years back after becoming aware of thehorrors of the factory farm system. a long time vegetarianturned vegan, she said, “it was for the animals.” She felt thatthe industrial food system was contributing not just to ani-mal cruelty, but to our own diet-related diseases as well.

Kelsey made a point of using organic ingredients in many ofher products and also creating sugar-free and gluten-free forher customers who may have trouble with their insulin levelsor who are gluten sensitive. “i felt so bad for them!” she saidreferring to diabetics who would come to her stand at themarket and look longingly at her treats for sale. “So i had tomake something for them”. Kelsey uses grape seed oil insteadof butter in most of her fudge, which cuts down on the satu-rated fat content. She also uses truvia (a natural sweetenermade from the Stevia plant) in her baked goods because shedidn’t want to use any chemical sweeteners.

She offers 22 flavors of fudge (some are vegan), two types ofgluten-free sugar-free vegan scones: apricot almond, blueberryalmond, lemon poppy seed, cranberry walnut and chocolatechip coconut. Her vegan cookies include: double chocolateorange pecan and oatmeal raisin.

the following excerpt istaken from the book WishesFulfilled by Dr. wayne Dyer

even while soundasleep, your mind con-tinues observing, grab-

bing, and contemplatingthese omnipresent

thoughts. there’s verylittle respite from this

mental thought-produc-ing process throughout

your entire lifetime.

there’s a level of awareness available to you that you are probably unfa-miliar with. it extends upward and transcends the ordinary level of con-sciousness that you’re most accustomed to. at this higher plane of exis-tence, which you and every human being who has ever lived can accessat will, the fulfillment of wishes is not only probable—it is guaranteed.this … is simply a preparation for entering into that realm wherein youhave much more say over what comes into your life than you mighthave envisioned.

DO YOU REALLY THINK? no one has ever been able to say from whence a thought comes, or whatthat thought is made up of. it’s generally accepted that we think upthings and we make up all of our own thoughts. to be perfectly honest, for a large portion of my life, i held these same views on thoughts origi-nating with each individual. But at this juncture i tend to see the entireprocess as more of an act of observation, contemplation, and choice. ienjoy noticing that i have a continuous stream of thoughts that comefrom—who knows where? they have no boundaries or forms to exam-ine, and apparently are unlimited in number and permutation! i thinkof the stock market ticker that runs along the bottom of a screen, witheach stock price representing a simple thought.

you are capable of thinking many opposing thoughts in just a fewmoments, jumping helter-skelter from one idea to another—exhilara-tion, frustration, fear, ecstasy, worry, and so forth. unguided andunguarded, you serve up an endless array of thoughts continuously fromwaking to falling asleep. even while sound asleep, your mind continuesobserving, grabbing, and contemplating these omnipresent thoughts.there’s very little respite from this mental thought-producing processthroughout your entire lifetime. if you really believe that you are thecreator of all of your thoughts and control the entire process, then sim-ply stop. that’s right, just try to stop thinking. you may be able to slowthe stream of thoughts down considerably, but to simply stop thinkingall day and stay in a thoughtless state is quite impossible.

i’m suggesting you open your thought processes to a new idea that willhelp you as you begin changing your concept of yourself. you can thinkof yourself as a Divine limitless being rather than a person who doesn’thave choice when it comes to your thoughts. think of yourself as anobserver, contemplating and selecting thoughts that you choose from

that never-ending stream of thoughts onyour inner screen, 24/7/365. watchthoughts stream by from wherever theyoriginate, and observe them rapidly transi-tioning and combining and appearing anddisappearing. Snatch a thought from therunning ribbon of thoughts and contem-plate it. as you toss it around notice howyou feel—sad, depressed, happy, fright-ened, and so on. every thought going byhas an imprint on your concept of your-self. first be the observer, and then thecontemplator. now become the choicemaker who can consciously decide to putthat thought back into the running streamand pick a different one, a thought thatperhaps allows you to feel better.

I am okay, I look fine, I will lose a fewpounds, I am loved, I am Divine . . . theseand millions more like them are thoughtsthat you can opt for rather than the onesyou’ve become accustomed to choosing inthe past. this is how you begin a newprocess to change your concept of your-self. you accept as irrevocable that it is notyou setting the stream of thoughts intomotion, and that stopping thinking isn’tpossible at this stage of your evolution. atthis stage the essence of your being is toobserve, contemplate, and then choose.this can all be done in a fraction of ananosecond. the thoughts will keepappearing on your mental tv screen justlike the stock quotations. But you’ll nowbe choosing the ones you want to focuson, gather, retain, or let go.

i’m encouraging you to initiate a habit ofchoosing thoughts and ideas that supportfeeling good and powerful, and that ele-vate you to a higher level of consciousnesswhere your self-concept welcomes yourhigher self.

i love uell S. andersen’s description ofthis process in his book Three MagicWords. i leave you to contemplate it asyou prepare to befriend that indwellingself that is desperately wishing to be ful-filled at the extraordinary level, ratherthan at the ordinary where you have livedfor far too long:

what happened?where do you want to be?How do you need to get there?when do you expect your person-al goals to be achieved?who and what can assist you toget there?

THE CLEAR THEME OFYHC, WHETHER READINGTHE WONDERFUL ARTI-CLES AND/OR ADVERTISE-MENTS, IS HAVING CHOIC-ES AND MAKING DECI-SIONS REGARDING YOURPERSONAL HEALTH.numerous medical providers areavailable to assist you in makingdecisions regarding your physicalailments. you can turn to a varietyof mental health professionals towork with you when faced withpersonal troubles and changes.

Stress in our lives is an unfortunatefact. fortunately, though, wonder-ful spas, massages, classes, gyms, personal trainers, and other suchoutlets are available. you can makepersonal decisions about whichoutlet meets your need to relax.

So, isn’t it wonderful to know thatwhen faced with a divorce, one ofthe two most difficult times ofyour life, you have choices to assistyou in making decisions for todayand your future?

Divorce is a personal experiencepeople handle in different ways, including their coping mechanismsthrough the emotional stages. nomatter what way, emotional stageor coping method, each personmakes personal and individualdecisions each day to assist them-selves through this time.

DIFFERENTAPPROACHES TO DIVORCEeveryone is familiar with the tradi-tional avenue of litigating yourdivorce through the courts. youmay retain an attorney or repre-sent yourself. if hiring an attorney, most require the payment of a sig-nificant retainer before performingany work. a judicial officer willmake most, if not all decisions foryou regarding your life, childrenand future.

if you prefer to avoid public hearings regard-ing your personal affairs, collaboration andmediation are options. collaboration is ablend of litigation and mediation. the partieseach retain an attorney of their choice and thefour of you work together to reach an agree-ment. often the attorneys will recommendassistance from outside professionals to pro-vide additional information to assist the par-ties in making an agreement. unfortunately, ifunable to reach an agreement, the parties arerequired to retain new attorneys to proceedwith litigation or look to private mediation.

Private mediation is a process that providesthe couple with the opportunity to make theirown decisions regarding their future—theirchildren, financial security and maintenanceof stability.

why not start with mediation so you can bein control of the outcome from the beginning, resulting in an agreement that is more likely tolast. isn’t it true that we feel stronger andmore confident in our decisions when wemake them rather than when we are told whatto do? mediation avoids the win/lose feelingof a judicial decision.

HOW PRIVATE MEDIATION WORKSmediation is an alternative dispute resolutionprocess where the couple meets with a skilledprofessional, often a licensed attorney, whoeducates them on the various aspects of thelaw, assists them to communicate effectivelyto ensure their words are heard and under-stood, and provides creative alternatives toresolve the issues of their specific case.

mediation is designed to encourage a free flowof communication and information, enablingthe parties to make all decisions based on theirown personal needs and interests. this processis not therapy or marriage counseling.

at Buchanan law & mediation center, thefollowing basic questions, and similar personalones for the couple, are addressed:

these questions are raised, considered andresolved. the end result is your agreement, toaddress your needs based on your terms—andfor much less money.

again, why not start here—a decision for yourhealth—mind, body and soul?

THE MEDIATOR’S ROLEmy role as the mediator is to

Help the parties identify areas of agree-ment and disagreement, facilitate com-munication between them, help themexplore options, and provide valuablelegal information.

assist in referrals to other professionalservices that may be needed to reach anagreement (e.g., property and businessappraisers, tax consultants, child thera-pists, etc.).

Draft a settlement agreement based ondecisions reached by and between theparties.

Prepare, upon request, all necessary legaldocuments. the intent is to ensure theparties have no reason to go to court—even to file documents.

an important aspect of mediation is that allcommunications are privileged and confiden-tial. nothing said and no document provided, prepared or resulting from mediation (unlessfiled) is admissible in court, is subject to dis-covery, or can be duplicated for any reason.this process enables the couple to speakfreely—with no concern that their words willcome back in the future—and negotiate anagreement to meet their personal needs.

MAJOR ISSUES TO COVERa family law case has three primary issues toresolve:

child custody/visitation.Support—child and/or spousalProperty—identification, character-ization, valuation and division.

for child custody/visitation, private media-tion addresses the parents’ rights and responsi-bilities regarding the care of their minor chil-dren. legal custody deals with the parents’decision-making process regarding the health, education, religious training and overall wel-fare of their children.

the parents talk about the specifics of eachtopic to uncover past, present and future areasof disagreement so the agreement can bedesigned to avoid future pitfalls.

the other area of custody deals with the specific parentingplan—time share. creativity abounds for the parents in media-tion—from the weekly schedule to the holiday celebrations.Specificity is recommended, with an understanding that alldecisions made today can be changed in the future based onmutual agreement.

mediation assists to minimize the parent’s discord which isalways best for the children. So, why not start from the beginningby being forthright about your differences, meet them head-onnow, and thereafter maintain a united front for your children.mediation is the place to do this.

Support is a very difficult issue for both parties involved in a fam-ily law matter. the legislature has developed rules and regula-tions intended to minimize conflict that must be considered.mediation can provide alternatives to the strict bounds of thoserules and regulations by focusing on the financial needs and abili-ties of both parties and their children. Honestly, stress is veryprevalent when addressing this issue. Be sure to remember thosemassages and spa treatment numbers!

the community estate is the property acquired by the coupleduring their marriage. the only way to make informed decisionsis with full disclosure of all information regarding the existence, characterization and valuation of all assets in which the commu-nity has, or may have, an interest and debts for which the com-munity is, or may be, liable.

to bring everything to the table, the mediator ensures the partiescontinue to conduct themselves consistent with the fiduciary andconfidential relationship established from date of marriage. thisrelationship imposes on each spouse a duty of the highest goodfaith and fair dealing such that neither person will take any unfairadvantage of the other.

the mediator works with the parties to specifically identify andvalue the property based on the documentary evidence or expert-ise of outside professionals. it’s your pie so why not select thepieces that will help you reach your goals and needs while consid-ering the other person’s goals and needs, realizing an exact split ofeach asset may not accomplish that task.

mediation enables you to establish numerous creative options soeach party can leave the table with a feeling of contentment—andless stress (that massage can now be a treat for the successesaccomplished through mediation).

no matter the issue, mediation is an approach that focuses on theparty’s mental, physical and psychological health, as well as thatof the family. the future of the family depends on the success ofthe parties and parents now. Buchanan law and mediationfocuses on the family and couple to assist you in accomplishingthat success.

HealtHy aging Dementia part 3: Legal Papers

THIS ARTICLE IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE ONLYGENERAL ADVICE. Since laws vary from state to state, itis important for you to seek the help of an experienced elderlaw attorney who can help guide you through the localstatutes.

the previous article explained that people are being diag-nosed with alzheimer’s disease and related forms of demen-tia earlier in the disease process. this gives the person withdementia and his or her loved ones valuable time to get cer-tain legal documents in place before the dementia growsworse and the afflicted person is no longer capable of makingreasoned decisions.

DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR HEALTHCAREalso known as a DPoa for health care, this documentallows an individual to select someone—or sometimes morethan one person—to make medical decisions on their behalfwhen the disease has progressed to the point they cannotmake rational health-related decisions for themselves.

a DPoa for healthcare usually gives the appointed personthe right to consent to and refuse medical care on the indi-vidual’s behalf and the right to arrange for additional care upto and including nursing home placement. it is importantfor your loved one to select someone he or she trusts com-pletely to follow his or her wishes.

you may be able to get a DPoa for healthcare form fromyour doctor’s office, a local hospital, or a local nursing home.make sure your loved one reads the document carefully andunderstands it. check the instructions before signing—somestates require that DPoa for healthcare forms be signed inthe presence of a notary public.

LIVING WILLa living will allows your loved one to place his or her wishesabout end of life care in writing. there are no correct orincorrect answers on a living will. Some people use the livingwill to document their wish for aggressive or heroic treat-ment at the end of life. others request no treatments at allaside from comfort management.

if you have questions about any of the treatments listed onthe living will, ask your doctor for clarification.

as with a DPoa for healthcare, some states require the liv-ing will to be signed in the presence of a notary public.

EXECUTING A WILLALLOWS INDIVIDUALSTO DECIDE WHAT WILLHAPPEN TO THEIRMONEY, PROPERTY,AND BELONGINGS,COLLECTIVELY KNOWNAS THEIR ASSETS, AFTERTHEY HAVE DIED.

DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR FINANCESwhen you speak to the elder law attorney, make sure he or she understands thatyour loved one wants to sign a durable power of attorney for finances and not aregular power of attorney.

a regular power of attorney ends when your loved one becomes impaired to thepoint where he or she can no longer make choices. a durable power of attorney, onthe other hand, endures beyond your loved one’s cognitive decline. unless yourloved one, while still decisional, chooses to revoke the DPoa for finances, thedurable power of attorney will remain in effect until your loved one’s death.

a durable power of attorney allows the decision-maker, or agent, to handle theclient’s finances on his or her behalf. typical duties include paying bills, depositingand withdrawing funds from bank accounts, paying and collecting on debts, andmonitoring the individual’s accounts to make sure he or she does not become thetarget of financial fraud or abuse.

as with the DPoa for healthcare, the individual should take care to appoint onlyan individual who he or she trusts completely.

WILLexecuting a will allows individuals to decide what will happen to their money, property, and belongings, collectively known as their assets, after they have died.although some online sites and office supply stores offer kits to help you draw up awill, you’re probably better off going through an attorney. this is especially true ifyou suspect the will is going to be contested or challenged.

ESTATE/MEDICAID PLANNINGnot everyone with dementia is able to remain at home throughout the diseaseprocess. many must go to nursing facilities. the problem with this is that medicareand private insurance do not pay for long-term custodial care in a nursing home.even long-term care insurance plans may have a large deductible or a daily co-pay.most people end up paying for medicare from their own funds.

once those funds are depleted, the individual in the nursing home is able to qualifyfor medicaid, a needs-based, state-run program which does pay for long-term care.

if you suspect your loved one will need medicaid at a future date, it’s smart tostart making plans now, while he or she is still alert enough to understand whatis happening.

two issues that sometimes come up during medicaid planning are gifting and divi-sion of assets. the laws that govern medicaid programs do not allow you to simplygive your money or other assets away in order to qualify for assistance. Do not giveaway anything of value, and do not allow your loved one with dementia to do so,until you have spoken with your elder law attorney.

Division of assets occurs when one spouse remains in the community and theother spouse is admitted to long-term care. Dividing assets allows the spouse stillliving in the community to keep the house and enough money to survive. Becausecompleting a division of assets form can be tricky, it is best to let an experiencedattorney handle it.

as soon as your loved one is diagnosed with dementia, call a qualified elder lawattorney to get the necessary legal documents in place while your loved one is stillcapable of making decisions. a little stress now can bring you a lot of peace ofmind later.

the next article in this series will address caring for the alzheimer’s patient whostill lives in his or her own home.

eaSt/weSt acupuncture & male fertility

IT MAY COME AS A SUR-PRISE, BUT MALE FACTORPLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN UPTO 50% OF THE CASES OF ACOUPLE’S INFERTILITY.Sperm quality (e.g. morphologyand Dna integrity) has been cor-related with more than simply fer-tilization rates, but also with fac-tors such as development of thefertilized egg, implantation, and -perhaps most importantly - thedevelopment of the embryo itself.

with these factors in mind, menare seeking to improve the qualityof their contribution. However, the male factor is often ignored, especially when the cause of infer-tility is unexplained according toconventional medicine. men dousually receive at least a basicsemen analysis, but even whenresults are questionable, the condi-tion is rarely addressed. instead, treatment is focused squarely onthe woman. the studies show thatpregnancy rates are increased whenmale factors are addressed, as well.

chinese medicine addresses spe-cific complaints, as well as relatedsymptoms, through the use ofacupuncture, oriental medicinalherbs, and dietary and lifestylechanges. Depending on the case, treatment can make significantchanges in just a few weeks.further benefit is gained fromlonger courses of treatment, sincesperm development is approxi-mately three months. Both part-ners can optimize fertility by start-ing treatment as soon as they sus-pect any problem, or if either part-ner is experiencing symptomsrelated to sexual or reproductivefunction. the sooner these condi-tions are resolved, the sooner nat-ural fertility may be restored, andmore extreme measures avoided.

FURTHER BENEFIT ISGAINED FROM LONGERCOURSES OF TREAT-MENT, SINCE SPERMDEVELOPMENT ISAPPROXIMATELY THREEMONTHS.

there are a number of influences toconsider that can affect sperm quality.environmental and nutritional factorshave a direct impact on the healthyproduction of sperm. unhealthyhabits, emotional disturbances andhigh levels of stress are additional fac-tors. these can all be addressed with-in the framework of acupuncture andchinese medicine.

when it comes to treatment, acupuncture and chinese medicinework to restore hormone balance, reduce the effects of emotional distur-bance and stress, and bring blood flowto the reproductive area. in conven-tional medical terms, we are workingto improve the motility, morphologyand count of the sperm. there arenow many studies that demonstratethe potential benefits of acupunctureand chinese medicine on semenparameters.

overall, chinese medicine harnessesthe body’s own energy to balance and heal itself. the effect is a bettersense of well-being and increasedreproductive health.
