When 1st July 2010, comes rolling in, living in East African

will never be the same again. The common Protocol will

nally enter into force and it will open numerous doors

    of opportunities for East Africans.

The question is, are the Kenyan youth aware of the opportuni-

ties and benets that would accrue following the ratication of the

    common Market Protocol.

The protocol on the establishment of the East African Commu-

nity (EAC) Common Market was signed by Heads of State on

20th November 2009, coinciding with the 10th anniversary cel-

ebrations of the re-established EAC. In simple terms, a common

market is where member countries of a Regional Economic Com-

munity operate as a single market with free movement of goods,

services, labour and capital. The youth stand to benet the most

    from the integration.

What is of great concern how the youth lack information about the

Regional Integration Process. Majority of them are unaware that

with establishment of the common market, they could live and work

in any of the ve partner states (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania

and Burundi) without discrimination of nationality. Not being aware

of what is going on around them is that they tend to be ill equipped

to fully exploit the opportunities made available by the protocol.

The free movement of persons, will allow one to study any-

where in the ve partner states without use of visa.

Free Movement of labour gives youth the ability to work in any

of the ve states, this means more job opportunities

Right of establishment will motivate the young entrepreneurs

to start their own ventures across East Africa.

It is therefore important for the youth to seek information be-

cause the more knowledge they can acquire the more they canutilize it to achieve their future goals and dreams as well as ac-

celerate economic growth and development of East Africa Com-

munity. For more information visit: www.mea.go.ke
