For pet owners, the December holidays present a bit of a challenge – do you board your animals or take ’em along with you when you go away? We explore the options. By Fiona Zerbst

FOR SOME, THE IDEA of going on holiday without Rover or Fluffy is unthinkable. My friend Tanya has four pooches and she simply refuses to take a Christmas break that doesn’t include them. “My dogs are family members, I can’t even think of leaving them behind!” Tanya says.

Tanya is not alone. In fact, so many people can’t leave their animals at home that websites catering to their needs have sprung up. This proved useful to me when I relocated from Cape Town to Johannesburg – my cat and I spent a night in Kimberley at a pretty, kitty-friendly guest house and www.petfriendly.co.za was where I found the perfect spot.

If you’re travelling locally, being able to take your beloved pet with you will certainly give you peace of mind (unless you worry about how they respond – cats are certainly less likely to adapt than dogs).

Greta Wilkens, who owns Die Strandhuis in Umdloti, says small dogs are welcome at her self-catering establishment. “I cater specifically for guests with smaller dogs. Elder guests in particular are thrilled they can bring their canine companions. My decision to welcome these pets has actually been good for business,” she says. “A couple recently brought their spaniel to stay just so he could experience the sea – we are a short walk from the beach.”

Wilkens feels bigger dogs and cats would be problematic, however. Every establishment has its own policies, so it’s best to enquire as to what the rules and regulations are. Whatever your needs, you’re sure to find the right pet-friendly place.

If, however, your holiday involves planes, trains and automobiles, taking a pet along may not be feasible. If your pets

are particularly sensitive or nervous, you may not want to board them in a kennel, so consider a pet-sitter.

Rene Memmel, owner of House Sitting Solutions is one such sitter. “My view is that animals are happiest at home, because animals are acutely aware of their surroundings,” Memmel says. His service combines house-sitting with pet-sitting. In addition to feeding and caring for pets, he also waters plants, cleans pools, retrieves mail and arranges contractors in an emergency (like a plumbing leak). He’ll walk Rover, too.

“I look after mostly domestic animals, cats and dogs, but I’ve also looked after exotic animals like snakes, bearded dragons, fish and so on,” he says. It is vital that owners provide as much info on their animals as possible, says Memmel, so feeding routines can be adhered to and any ailments monitored. “The more I know about the pet, the better I’m able to respond to its needs,” he says.

What about kennels? Some are like five-star hotels and they do everything possible to cater to your pets’ needs in your absence. Also, some people would rather lock up their house and go, and may feel better with their furries safe at a kennel.

Joy-ann Nicholl, owner of Villa Siesta Pet Retreat, has been boarding pets for 13 years.

“My feeling is that animals get lonely at home – they miss their owners and they need company,” she says. “A kennel offers a different environment where animals are monitored all the time, don’t get bored, and don’t expect to see you so they feel less lonely.”

Nicholl suggests that pet owners visit a kennel to inspect where Fluffy will sleep.

“Ask questions,” she says. “Find out about food, exercise regimes, medical care.” She says pets love company, even if they’re tentative at first, and she and her staff ensure animals get plenty of attention.

Before you take your animal to a kennel, though, make sure its inoculations are up to date. And don’t take Rover to the vet the day before, either, because side effects from inoculations could be mistaken for illness. Inoculate at least two weeks before boarding an animal, says Nicholl.

Her top tip? Leave children at home when bringing Fluffy to the kennel. “Children will cry and fuss and that will upset the animal, making it harder for it to settle,” she says. “It’s important that your pet is calm!”

The SPCA in Sandton offers the following tips to travellers motoring with pets:

• Secure your pet – an unrestrained animal in the car can be a deadly projectile in the event of an accident. Rover needs to buckle up, too!

• Ventilate the car, but make sure your pet doesn’t lean halfway out of the window. Collision with obstacles isn’t impossible, plus road grit can get in your pet’s nose and ears.

• Always carry fresh water along on road trips. If you need refreshing, chances are Fluffy and Rover do, too.

There is a long-running joke between my sister and me about how we each pack for a trip. She says she must take a leaf out of my book on how to travel light, and I tease her about the ‘elephant’ she takes with her on journeys. The joke’s sometimes on me, though, when I have packed so minimally I have to buy warmer clothes. Yet, then she always complains that she never wears half the outfits she’s packed. So what is the happy medium between a featherweight and an elephant when it comes to packing for your holiday trip? By Shona Bagley

FIRSTLY, CHECK THE SEVEN-DAY weather forecast for the area to which you’re travelling and choose your clothes accordingly. A day or two before you travel, lay all the outfits you are thinking of packing on your bed, as you would wear them: underwear, top, pants, belt and socks, with your shoes at the base of the bed underneath the outfit. Take long, hard looks at which items are unnecessary. Each item should be able to mix and match to make three outfits (this includes shoes, ladies!). Be ruthless!

New research from British Airways – operated by Comair in South Africa – warns that: “Nine out of 10 holiday-makers don’t use up to 30 percent of the items they take on holiday; over 40 percent take three or more pairs of shoes; almost one in five take 10 or more pairs of underwear; and one in eight people take three towels or more for a one-week holiday.” In other words, if in doubt, throw it out, particularly if you’re flying.

Abigail Comber, British Airways’ head of brand and marketing, says, “Checking what your baggage limit is on your chosen airline will help you decide what to pack. We know from the research that 23 percent of people don’t look into it before they get to the airport.”

Pool your resources – if you’re travelling with a group or as a family, take one hair dryer, one umbrella and share shampoo and soap with your loved ones. Pack free

samples of moisturiser and sunblock, rather than taking space-zapping regular sizes.

If you’re travelling from one climate to another, dress like an onion. You can layer up or down as you get to your destination. Carry your bulky coat rather than packing it. Sarongs are fabulously versatile: from scarf to wrap to nightie to picnic blanket to sheet, they're quick-drying and very light to pack.

The age-old debate about rolling or laying clothes flat is ongoing, but www.travelindependent.info swears that rolling will save you space and make it far easier to get at everything and keep your clothes less creased (personally, I think this is more applicable to a backpack than a suitcase, but you be the judge). Pack as many wrinkle-resistant garments as possible, whether you stack or roll.

Weather forecasts are not always accurate, so make sure to pack at least one jersey and socks even if the weatherman says it’s going to be sunny. Whatever the weather, pack a pair of walking shoes and a rainproof windbreaker.

The essential items you should not leave behind are ID document, valid passport, ticket and visa, if applicable. For everything else, there’s your debit or credit card.

GrowingThe health and safety of our children comes first. We make sure that our homes are safe and secure. We kiddie-proof the stairs and the electrical sockets. We make sure they are buckled up when in the car. Yet when they are out having fun and getting fit on the sports field, we may not be able to protect them from every injury, but we can limit the risks by taking a few preventative steps. CHILDREN UNDER the age of eight are not particularly well

co-ordinated because their joints, muscles and bones are still developing, along with their visual, spatial and motor skills. Many youngsters also have a sense of fearlessness from that allows them to stretch their limits, be confident and adventurous. They throw themselves, hammer and tongs, into every tackle, swing and shot. This makes them more susceptible to injuries and accidents on the sports field.

Kids also grow and mature at different rates. According to Dr Joseph Congeni, Head of Paediatric Sports Medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital, growth spurts can aggravate stress injuries because there is an “imbalance between strength and flexibility”.

Dr Congeni advises parents to take a “prevention is better than cure” approach. Make sure your children have the correct kit, such as sport-specific shoes and pads. When choosing a coach ask, if they have first aid and CPR training. If you have training in first aid, offer your services whenever you are at a match or practice. Make sure the playing surface is in good condition without holes where ankles can be twisted.

Keep your children well hydrated; pop an extra bottle of water into their lunchbox when they have sport later that day. Dehydration can lead to muscular cramps, vomiting and even fainting. This could easily be the cause of an accident on the sporting field.

Ironically, inactivity has become a prevalent cause of sports injuries in children. Dr Andri Smuts, a physiotherapist at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, explains that children are a lot

less active nowadays. They spend more time sitting and playing video games than swinging from jungle gyms.

Physical activity strengthens bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. It also improves balance and co-ordination as well as decreases the risk of injury when playing sport.

Parents should ensure children are active for at least an hour every day. Good exercise for a child does not

mean an hour long spinning class. Kids get exercise just playing a game of catch or racing around a park. Instead

of taking them to a movie on the weekend, take them for a bike ride or kick the ball around in the park.

When it comes to keeping our kids safe on the sports field, remember it’s up to you to ensure taking as many precautions as possible on for your child’s safety.

Pop-up restaurants have long been popular in Britain, America and Cuba, but it seems the trend is finding ground in South Africa too.By Shona Bagley

AN ENTERPRISING AND intriguing response to the world economic downturn is a phenomenon called the ‘pop-up’ restaurant. Crippling rent and other overheads and a disinclination to get into substantial debt through start-up loans to finance a traditional restaurant have led to ‘pop-ups’ across the globe.

Essentially, a chef will utilise a vacant space such as a hall, an empty warehouse, a conventional restaurant that is closed for the night, or even a private home as a temporary setting.

In his series Ramsay’s Best Restaurant, famously foul-mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay puts a twist on the pop-up by giving his contestants an empty, stand-alone cube of a room, bare as an eggshell, and telling them to equip it with cutlery, crockery and flatware and operate as a restaurant for a night.

One of the most talked-about UK pop-up restaurants was when Californian chef Thomas Keller set up for 10 days in Harrods, London, in October 2011. He called it the French Laundry at Harrods and recreated as closely as possible the ambience of his Michelin-starred French Laundry restaurant in his homeland. Basically, he used his pop-up as a test for a permanent restaurant in the UK.

Although pop-up restaurants are a relatively new concept in South Africa,

Michael Olivier – who is a food and wine commentator and TV chef (he appears twice weekly on the Expresso Breakfast Show) – was a real pioneer. “I took Boschendal Restaurant to the Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg in the 1980s, it was an idea way before its time, but it worked like a dream. The local chefs were very co-operative and I took a chef from Boschendal with me.”

Olivier says he loves the idea of pop-up restaurants and he believes the concept would work well locally. “What about some great Cape Town restaurateurs opening a pop-up in Johannesburg, and say, Shaun Smith from Fusion World Food Café opening one in Cape Town?” He adds, “I was in the business for a number of years and ran a national top 10 restaurant. I would have loved to have taken it to, say, Durban.”

Someone who is already making it work locally is famous Dutch-born chef Arnold Tanzer. His pop-up restaurant, Eat, is creating a frisson among Johannesburg foodies. He told Finweek, “Our pop-ups are about breaking barriers on all levels, from the locations that our events are held in to the people that join. It is a celebration of Jo’burg and its heritage. The fact that one can only be invited to these evenings via their Facebook and Twitter pages also lends itself to the feeling of exclusivity. Our events are

kind of ‘clubby’, with some people having attended every event. People love the fact that the exact location of the event is kept secret until the last minute.

“Some venues are bakeries or coffee shops or places with historical significance. We pop up for a night or two. We alert our fan club of the date via an email newsletter. They’re only texted the location that morning,” says Tanzer.

“Rent kills a lot of Jo’burg restaurateurs, so for me this is about saying I’ll pop up where I can. Diners are looking for comfort and recognisable food. Eat is also a social moment and the mystery venue means they get into the spirit of it,” he says.

At the other end of the country, Cape Town restaurateur Ed Saunders looked for a space to try out the trend, and found it. Saunders owns two restaurants: Fork, which is a tapas bar in Long Street, and Knife, an American-style smokehouse, in Century City. For one night only, a Saturday in March, Knife restaurant popped up at La Cuccina bistro, self-proclaimed best restaurant in Hout Bay with huge success, leaving only the hope that it would be back again soon.

Pop-up restaurants will only proliferate in South African culinary circles. Keep your ears to the ground as renowned chefs literally pop up in unexpected venues for temporary displays of their talents and techniques.

Researchers are exploring the effectiveness of a new insulin pill that has been developed by doctors and scientists in Israel. Trials of the pill are taking place in Israel and Holland, and doctors are hopeful the pill will become available in about three years. 'We are absolutely delighted to have got this far,' says Dr Miriam Kidron of Jerusalem's Hadassah University Hospital, who is leading the research.'Popping a tablet will be far easier and will end the problem of some diabetics not always injecting when they should.'

Another treatment for diabetes that has already begun entering mainstream The tubeless insulin pump known as the OmniPod is a new device that was created to hold and deliver insulin as an alternative to injections. It comes with a PDM, a personal diabetes monitor, that wirelessly programs a personalized insulin delivery, calculates suggested doses, and has a built in blood glucose meter. The OmniPod insulin management system is currently distributed in France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, UK and USA. It may some time for it to reach South Africa.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, two recent studies conducted by Robert Wilson, PhD of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, memory decline has been linked to the two-and-a-half years before death, while an active mind just may be the best means of prevention.

Wilson’s first study was conducted on 174 individuals, whose memories were tested once a year from anywhere between 6 to 15 years before death. The study revealed that there is a period of two-and-a-half years before death during which both thinking capacity and memory decline occurs. During this period, mental or cognitive functions deteriorate up to 17 times faster than before this time.

Wilson’s second study tested over a thousand individuals with an average age of 80. Participants’ memories were tested once a year for roughly five years, during which participants also recorded on how often they took part in mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, writing, and thinking games. The study found a parallel between the amount of participation in mentally stimulating activities and mental capacity."The results suggest a cause and effect relationship: that being mentally active leads to better cognitive health in old age," Wilson was quoted as saying.

WE LOVE THE SUMMER sun and we spend a lot of time outdoors, playing sport or soaking up the rays on the beach. But sun-worshiping simply isn’t smart – there are 20 000 cases of skin cancer in South Africa every year!

Exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, like premature ageing, and, worse, skin cancer. While there are three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays, UVA and UVB are the ones we need to protect ourselves against. UVA penetrates below the top layer of human skin. According to the Center for Disease Control in the US, UVA rays can damage connective tissue and increase your risk of skin cancer. UVB rays are absorbed by the ozone layer to some extent, and don’t penetrate the skin as deeply, but they can still be damaging.

According to Dr Bradley Wagemaker, medical director of Lamelle Research Laboratories, the majority of lifetime sun exposure is acquired by the age of 18, which is why it is so important to protect children.

“Remember, too, that sunburn causes skin damage before any redness appears, so don’t wait until you start seeing the effects,” warns dermatologist Dr Dilshaad Asmal. She suggests that the individuals at greatest risk should be the most cautious. “These are people with very fair skin that burn easily, those with a personal history of cancer, those with a lot of moles on their bodies (up to 50, say, and people being treated with immunosuppressant drugs.”

There’s a wide range of sunscreen products on the market, but be cautious because using a sunscreen is not a licence to spend long hours in the sun. Exposure to the direct rays of the sun should always be kept to a minimum, especially between 10am and 3pm. “There’s no such thing as a total sunblock or any form of safe tanning,” warns CANSA. In fact, products cannot be labelled ‘sunblock’ because this would be misleading advertising.

A sunscreen’s SPF, or sun protection factor, measures how much the product shields the sun’s shorter-wave UVB rays. Here’s how it works: If it takes five to

10 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, an SPF 20 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening for 20 times longer – about two hours on average.

Most sunscreens with SPF 20 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. All sunscreens bearing the CANSA Seal of Recognition (CSOR) have broad spectrum protection, meaning they protect against UVA and UVB.

CANSA recently tested sunscreens to assess their UVA protection as research has shown that there is a strong correlation between UVA exposure and malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of cancer – as a result, CANSA is raising their Seal standards and requirements. In addition to current SA standards, as of April 2013, products have to comply with the European Colipa standards to exhibit the new seal. Look for those bearing the CANSA SunSmart Choice Seal, which indicates those products already in compliance.

CEO of CANSA, Sue Janse van Rensburg, says you should look for sunscreen that has broad-spectrum properties. “Broad-spectrum protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. The SPF must be between 20 and 50, and preferably SPF 30 to 50 for fair to very fair skin,” she says.

She suggests checking expiry dates, too, because sunscreen usually expires after two years. “Look out for UV-protective swimsuits and beach-wear as UV radiation can penetrate fabric,” says van Rensburg.

Remember that anyone can get skin cancer – it can affect all ethnic and racial groups. It is a misconception that darker-skinned people don’t get it. However, melanoma is more commonly found in patients with a fair complexion and a tendency to burn rather than tan, says Asmal. In lighter-skinned individuals, accelerated photo ageing is the predominant feature. This includes brown spots, poor texture, wrinkles, dryness and sagging of the skin. Pre-cancerous lesions follow on photo ageing, which frequently requires medical intervention. In darker-skin types, the predominant feature is hyperpigmentation.

STRAIGHTENING UP MAY appear to be psychological when we want to impress, but the benefits of good posture are by no means all in the mind. In our desk-pushing culture where office workers spend 8 to 10 hours slumped in front of a computer every day, we tend to regard holding ourselves upright as a sort of cosmetic add-on rather than a conscious decision to look after our health.

The way we carry ourselves has a significant impact on the way we breathe and the alignment of our joints and bones. Poor posture can cause backache, headaches and digestive problems. It also hampers our ability to do physical activity and exercise and can disturb our sleeping patterns.

Posture is the manifestation of the way we feel. If you are feeling stressed, you may notice that you tend to hunch over, because your muscles contract and shorten and physically close down your body, rather than opening up to allow you to breathe deeply.

Conditions such as asthma, breathing difficulties, or a predisposition to colds and flu could all be related to your posture, because in these cases the chest becomes tight and the lungs are not being used to their full capacity. When your shoulders are rounded and your head is tucked into your neck, this causes

tension in the base of the neck, which leads to problems with headaches, migraines and neck spasms.

Nerves run through the spinal cord and branch out into the body, which means that bad posture can impede the passage of nerve impulses, creating what is sometimes known as a somato-visceral response, where damage to tissues in the back affects the internal organs. The resulting pain may in turn be referred back to the spine. The opposite can also occur, such as kidney problems that can refer back to the spine and give one backache.

If the muscles in your neck are tight, it affects the flow of blood through the arteries to areas of the brain that control breathing, heart rate, appetite, balance, emotions, the hormone producing pituitary gland, and even sleep. It’s about how we carry ourselves when we sit, walk, sleep or run. Little wonder then, that posture is so pivotal to our overall sense of wellbeing.

The number one rule? Prevention! As always, this works far better than cure, and this is where chiropractic, along with regular exercise, plays a major role. Maintaining your back and spine health is your chiropractor’s role in this process and having regular checkups can prevent problems from developing, and at the same time, keep your spine in good working order.

Be aware of your body and ease yourself out of stiffness. Shake your arms and legs out to loosen up a little.

Elongate your body by imagining a string running from your ankles up through your body and out the top of your head pulling you upwards – allow yourself to follow the string and lengthen your spine.

Breathe deeply to reduce tension in your neck and back muscles and to expand your chest.

Loosen up by shrugging your shoulders up as far as you can then pulling them back towards the centre of your spine and down toward your elbows.

Don’t sit in one position for long periods and avoid crossing your legs. Sit with your spine against the back of the chair and have your knees slightly below hip level.

Don’t lean forward for any length of time; your shoulders should be straight and parallel to your hips.

Lie on your back for 15 minutes every day on a firm surface and keep your knees bent. Place a thin pillow under your head. Breathe deeply into your abdomen. This releases the back tension and reduces the effects

of stress on your body.

This is when your posture is at its best, but how often do you really focus on maintaining correct posture?

AS A LIFE COACH, I am often asked by clients how they can better manage their energy levels. Many describe how even with rest and time off they continually feel tired. We have all experienced returning to work or finishing with the kids on a Monday (after a weekend that was supposed to leave us feeling refreshed), and still feeling as if life has been one long sentence without any punctuation marks. The result is that many feel at the mercy of their energy levels, or artificially attempt to manage them with caffeine or energy drinks.

We have a need to create what I call a baseline state. A baseline state is the state to which you continually return and which fuels you to operate at your best in the other more obvious states. It is where you find your balance.

You are probably more familiar with the other states, such as when you are at your best and you have lots of energy or enthusiasm. This may include academic studies for a student, work for a business person, or being a good parent for a mother. We become good at these states or roles through putting in a lot of effort and planning.

It is the space in between that many of us aren’t so good at, and that we just let happen rather than intentionally creating a meaningful and resourceful baseline state. Most of us, however, do not know what

that state comprises for us as an individual, and the result is that we just collapse at the end of the day. Here are some useful tips that will help you to create a baseline state.

I am continually amazed at how many people go about life as if they are not human, and then wonder why they don’t function well as one! It doesn’t matter how brilliant, gifted, talented, educated, or important you are; if you do not take care of yourself as a human being you will limit your ability to demonstrate and share your worth. A good example is the most expensive high performance vehicle, which is limited by the maintenance it receives and the fuel it requires. If it is not maintained properly, it will not perform on the road as it should. The fact is that you need sufficient sleep, healthy food, and regular exercise. If you don’t take these seriously there is no use looking any further. It’s no secret what the problem is, so take time to look after yourself.

When I use the word ‘resource’, I am referring to those things that you draw on or that supply you with energy, inner ability, wealth or that simply gives meaning

and enjoyment to you as an individual. Sometimes these are as simple as creature comforts or activities. They may include relationships or your beliefs. What are your special places, special people, special things, and special times?

As we near the end of the year, many look to some time off as the break that will magically refresh them again. Unfortunately, all too many return no better than before. It is maintaining our baseline state that alone can prevent burnout. Refuel yourself with your resources, and make the time for looking after your own wellbeing.

Raghu explains that a healthy routine must be put into place when they’re young. Too often, we get so drawn in by their cuteness that we tend to spoil them, and then hope we can undo the damage when they’re older. For puppies, proper schooling is essential and will help avoid bad habits forming as they grow up.

Don’t let your kitten associate your hands with a play toy. Let them play rough with toys so that they don’t develop bad habits of scratching and biting your fingers. Hands are for holding, stroking and gentle hugs.

Your pet knows what it needs to live a healthy and happy life, whether it’s more exercise or a better diet. “Pets often have discerning taste and when they’re not happy with what you give them, they’ll let you know,” Raghu says. Pay attention to their signals and learn to “listen” to their gestures.

When Golden Retrievers are happy or excited, they twirl on their hind legs, when

your cat wants a nibble she may rub her body against the treat jar, when a puppy wants to play outside he’ll learn to sit by the door and it’s always clear when a puppy wants a belly rub.

Pets love playing. It alleviates boredom, increases blood circulation and stretches their muscles. A twenty-minute session in the garden chasing a ball works wonders. Rather than leave them alone all day while you’re at work, consider a pet day care so that they can socialise with other pets.

Like babies, animals crave touch. Cats and dogs love it when you pet them gently. Touching calms them and also lets them know that they’re safe and loved.

Thirty minutes of jogging or walking your dog each day alleviates the stress of separation anxiety, keeps your dogs lean, and helps to prevent heart disease, arthritis and hip disorders. This is also a good time to practice what you learn together at puppy school or maintain good habits as you dog grows older.

Dr Raghu says that people often choose food for their pets without giving too much thought about what goes into it. “Food bought at the local supermarket is not always good for your pet. Look for food that is free from preservatives and additives, that has a superior meat content and obviously great flavour.” She also emphasises the importance of always having a bowl of fresh water handy, as well as treating your dog with the right snacks that clean their breath and teeth.

“Vets are not just there for you when your pets are sick. We’re also here to help you with preventative care. If there’s something

you need or if you have questions then pick up the phone and

ask your local vet. Better yet, bring your pet in

for regular checkups and don’t forget their

vaccinations.”

• Thermometer – the sticky strip forehead thermometers are good for reading the temperature of babies or young children. Increasingly popular also is the easy-to-read digital ear thermometers. The body’s normal temperature is 37 degrees Celsius. Anything over 38 degrees is considered a fever.

• Wound cleanser – a very basic cleanser that you can buy at any pharmacy to help you clean grazes, bites, cuts and larger wounds.

• Sterile gauze swabs – these are used where infection may be a risk and are used to clean wounds.

• Normal swabs – these are used with an antibacterial cream to put over the wounds once you have cleaned the wound.

• Tweezers/forceps – these are useful for pulling out pieces of glass, wood, metal, thorns or other intrusive bodies.

• Scissors – in an emergency a pair of scissors is used to cut through clothing and also to cut bandages.

• Safety pins – these are used to hold the bandage firmly but gently around the injured body part.

• Bandages – you need two different sizes of conforming bandages. The sizes differ in the width to accommodate the expanse of the injury to the body.

• First-aid dressings – you will need these to stop bleeding. By tightening around the wound and sealing it, it hurries the formation of blood clots.

• Plasters• Fabric plasters give long lasting

protection because of the extra sticking power.

• Haemostatic plasters stop bleeding by helping with the formation of blood clots.

• Waterproof plasters let air in but keep water and germs out

• Hypoallergenic plasters are suitable for sensitive skins.

• Disposable latex gloves – if you have to deal with sharp objects and blood then you need to protect yourself and the patients by using gloves to stop the transmission of HIV and other diseases.

• CPR mouth piece – using this piece eliminates the spread of germs when administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

• Interlocking splint – this is useful if there is an arm or leg break.

• Eye wash – break the seal and squeeze the vial to allow solution to flow across the eye. You can also use cooled boiled water to cleanse.

• For burns:• Burn plaster – this rebalances the

moisture in the wound.• Burn gel – put onto burn wound

to rehydrate the wound and relieve pain. You can also make use of the paraffin gauze.

• Medication – “Having medication in a first-aid kit must be done with the help of your pharmacist who understands your individual situation, and can assist you with allergy reactions to certain medication and dosages,” adds Van Ek. That said, you do need the following in your first-aid kit:• Preventative nausea medication,

especially if you’ll be going on choppy waters.

• Electrolytes for rehydration in case of diarrhoea.

• Pain and fever medication such as ibuprofen and paracetamol.

• Antihistamines if you experience an allergic reaction.

• Antibacterial topical creams to soothe and protect wounds.

• Individual circumstances: diving, bush, mountaineering“I recommend using a field guide for each specific situation,” advises Van Ek. “A field guide is useful to understanding the area and the potential threats that may exist. Because a lot of the medication you’ll need is prescriptive, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist who will help you build up an inventory for your needs.”

MORE INTERESTING THAN the sheer growth of the male grooming market, which is reported to have grown twice as fast as the female market, is society’s changing attitudes around ‘metrosexual’ behaviour – from men who spend as much time in front of the mirror as women. Taking an interest in men’s health and appearance means that there’s a refreshing amount of choice now available to men who want to hang onto some of their youthful vigour as they age.

Hollywood proves that both bald and grey can be dapper, with proudly balding actors such as Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery and Patrick Stewart oozing charisma and confidence. George Clooney’s salt-and-peppered locks have earned him 'silver fox' notoriety and, adding to the enhanced air of distinguishability grey brings, are Richard Gere, Pierce Brosnan and Anderson Cooper, to name a few.

But for men who don’t fancy it themselves and who’d rather slow these processes down, there are a variety of technological treatments available that not only help men grow their hair back, but natural alternatives and healthy lifestyle habits to slow down the likelihood of going bald and grey.

Male pattern baldness (MPB), or androgenic alopecia, is an inherited genetic condition affecting nearly half of all men by the age of 50. It refers to a condition whereby hair recedes from both the lateral sides of the forehead as well as the crown and, as the hair loss meets, leaves a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the back of the head.

Male pattern baldness is caused by an excessive production of dihydrotestosterone (commonly called DHT). DHT is a powerful sex hormone that promotes body and facial hair growth that, in inordinate amounts,

adversely affects the prostate as well as the hair located on the head. DHT initiates a process of follicular miniaturisation whereby the hair follicle deteriorates and eventually atrophies. The incidence of baldness corresponds to chronological age and, according to Medem Medical Library’s website, approximately 25% of all men begin balding by age 30 and two-thirds by age 60.

Traditionally, it has been believed that baldness was inherited from the maternal grandfather, but recent research reveals that both parents contribute to the likelihood of hair loss in their offspring. A person with a balding father or grandfather is two and a half times more likely to experience hair loss themselves.

While there may be no cure for baldness, FDA approved medications Rogaine and Propecia have proved effective for maximising hair growth. These medications however have their limitations – they last only as long as is taken and only work in a percentage of men. Hair transplantation surgery offers a more permanent solution – hair is relocated from an area where it is not pre-programmed to fall out and these transplanted follicles continue to grow healthily.

However, such surgery is costly and for many men, does not justify the expense or invasive treatment. There are all kinds of topical creams, washes, lotions and potions available, but according to Dr Kevin Alexander, a local hair transplant specialist, one should be warned that most of these have not been put to the test by clinical trials.

According to Naturopath Jonathan Myers, poor nutrition and deficiencies in certain nutrients can cause a propensity

for baldness, especially a lack of iron, B vitamins, vitamin A and zinc. A lack of exercise and sleep, as well as high levels of stress can all induce hormonal fluxes in the body which can cause the acceleration of baldness too, Myers states.

He therefore recommends including plenty of protein and iron in your diet and taking mineral supplements to increase hair health. Stress-reducing exercise helps relieve tension and promotes good blood circulation too, he advises.

“Saw palmetto and nettle root are two herbs that work directly on the prostate and block the production of DHT”, he claims. Natural oils like safflower, canola and olive oil, warmed up and massaged into the scalp promote a healthy scalp and garlic juice, onion or ginger juice work well too, left overnight.

“Hair loss in men, and especially in women, can be devastating,” states Dr Alexander. “This benign condition, considered to be purely cosmetic in nature has not been taken seriously enough”. It can be a psychologically damaging process with men being treated as though they are suffering from some terrible or terminal disease.

The evolutionary standpoint suggests that women are attracted to maturity, experience, wisdom and stability, and both greying and baldness reflect man’s ability to survive. If however, balding still means “grandpa” to you or the men in your life, discuss flattering styling options with a hairdresser. The general rule of thumb here is to keep it short or clean shaven and never, under any circumstances, to attempt looks of the classic comb-over or toupee varieties.

Men are spoilt for choice when it comes to hair products like gels, dyes, waxes and straighteners. Gone are the days of negative stigmas around eyebrow plucking, back waxing and manicures for men. So, what happens when real beauty dilemmas like baldness and greying set in? Are men ‘manly enough’ to deal with the physical and psychological changes and challenges of ageing they present? IN A TIME WHERE we talk about a 98 kg eight-year-old being taken from his parents in the name of child abuse, it becomes clear that giving the whole family the opportunity to exercise is critical. I listened to this story as the reporter stated that the boy was too obese to even begin exercising due to the potential impact on his body – especially his joints and heart. Could roller skating be a solution for this child?

Roller skating is a workout that involves almost all of the body’s muscles and in particular the heart. The National Institute for Fitness and Sports claims that roller skating works most of the major muscle groups – calves, quads, glutes, abdomen, and arms.

As you have been told a million times by “fitness experts”, many people quit their exercise regiment out of boredom. It’s not a lot of fun to exercise by yourself, which is the case with most forms of exercise. Roller skating is a sport where you can find yourself in a group of literally hundreds of people doing the same thing. They are not at the skating rink for exercise; they are there for the fun, music, lights and

socializing. However, if you are there with exercise benefits of roller skating in mind, I suggest staying away from the snack bar!

It’s easy to burn an hour roller skating, whether you are at a rink or skating outdoors. Let’s look at what you get out of that hour of fun from an exercise perspective. Firstly, roller skating is a low-impact workout, causing 50 percent less impact on your joints than running does. In other words, an aerobic roller-skating workout has the same benefit as the same amount of time spent jogging without the joint damage. Secondly, roller skating allows you to burn almost double the amount of calories during an hour than other aerobic activities.

Lastly, let’s consider the mental benefits. There’s not much scientific data (none that I could find) to support the positive mental benefits of roller skating. I don’t think it takes a multi-million dollar government funded study to recognise the fact that you never see a person roller skating and frowning at the same time. Between the music, lights, social aspect, health benefits and fun; roller skating could simply be the best total body

workout there is.When discussing family balance,

parents are often heard saying: “I want to have more fun with my children. I want to spend more quality time with my family. My family needs more exercise – more active time together. We do not have the time to do all the things that make us happy.” Roller skating is the perfect solution to every family striving for balance!

THE A NOT-SO-SWEET REALITY is that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the most used sweetener in the food industry – over the decades it has come to replace natural cane sugar as a sweetener because it is far easier and less expensive to produce. Nutritionist and fitness expert Mark Wolff, says, “Simply pick up a tin of baked beans, a bottle of coke, a packet of sweets and you will find dreaded corn syrup on the ingredients list”.

“Corn syrup has the devastating side effect of suppressing the satiatory receptors in the stomach. These receptors tell your brain that you are full so that your body knows when you’ve had enough to eat. If the receptors are suppressed, the brain isn’t able to send your body a message that it should stop eating, and of course you will over eat,” says Wolff.

He adds, “Ever noticed how someone can drink litres of Coke and never feel full? That is the corn syrup coming into play; it’s very effective and not just limited to Coke. I was travelling last year on business in Israel and someone at a business meeting had a Coke and said they felt full afterwards. Knowing what I know about corn syrup, I was quite surprised and I explained the corn syrup theory. The guy was quite knowledgeable and let me in on a little known secret: In Israel, Coke is manufactured with natural cane sugar, not corn syrup – unlike most other countries, where Coke no longer uses cane sugar.”

The jury is still out on whether or not HFCS is more damaging than any other type of sugar. A study at Princeton found that HFCS causes more weight gain than sucrose of the same amount. But, criticism of the study design left the finding in doubt.

What we do know is that, given its cheap price, it is easy for companies to pack more sugar into a food using HFCS and other corn-based sugars. “It just goes to show how a single ingredient can have such a large impact. Think twice before feeding foods with corn syrup products your family. It is always best to eat as naturally as possible,” says Wolff.

Many of your favourite sweet brands use excessive amounts of corn syrup.

The better option: Buy good quality sweets and opt for organic chocolates. A small serving size of good quality sweets or chocolate will be more rewarding and probably less fattening.

Believe it or not, many fizzy drinks contain HFCS. Add this to the long list of reasons to avoid fizzy drinks altogether.

The better option: Mix 100 percent fruit juices with sparkling natural water if you need those bubbles. Always avoid juice concentrates or juices with other artificial ingredients or flavourings.

Even seemingly healthy breakfast cereals contain high amounts of sugar and corn sugar. Be wary of those that promote fibre while hiding unnatural ingredients in the list.

The better option: Read nutrition labels carefully when in doubt and choose natural cereals over refined varieties.

Some brands of yoghurt, especially those that are labelled “sweetened” or that contain fruit pieces, are full of corn syrup.

The better option: Choose plain and unsweetened yoghurt and add your own fresh berries, fruit pieces, honey or organic brown sugar, which often don’t contain HFCS (always check to be sure).

Corn syrup is often added to unsuspecting items like salad dressings and sauces that you wouldn’t expect to find sweeteners on the label.

The better option: Make your own dressings using fresh, natural ingredients, good quality olive oil and vinegars, and herbs picked from your own herb pots.

Eat this, not that for healthier HFCS free options:

Optimum health and the maintenance of a healthy body mass are two very good reasons to improve your eating habits. So what are the guidelines for a healthy nutritional lifestyle?By Shona Bagley

Many health professionals believe if we eat at regular intervals we send a signal to the body that it doesn't have to store calories; and when we skip meals, we affect our metabolism negatively – which means that when we do eat, our bodies store more fats and carbs than they should.

So let’s begin with breakfast, widely believed to be the most important meal of the day. Just two benefits of breakfast are: it increases your metabolism (the engine that powers body and mind by converting food into fuel); and people who skip breakfast tend to eat more total calories by day's end.

British scientists found, in a recent study, that women who skipped breakfast ate more calories during the rest of the day and also had higher fasting levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol compared with the women in the regular breakfast-eating group. The researchers noted that skipping breakfast could lead to weight gain if the higher calorie intake was sustained.

Eating regular low fat meals reduces total and LDL cholesterol and reduces resistance to insulin – lowering the overall risk of developing heart disease. Regular meal eaters tend to have a lower calorie intake compared to those who eat irregularly – crucial if you’re looking to maintain or lose weight. By eating regularly (meals and healthy snacks) you will help keep your blood sugar levels stable, which aids improved appetite control and prevents overeating at the next meal or snacking on unhealthy food.

Always remember to practice portion caution to prevent unhealthy overeating. On the whole, bigger portions deliver more kilojoules. Try eating from a smaller plate and don’t feel you have to finish your food, no matter what your mom said. Keep leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch.

Try to cook as many meals as possible yourself. Takeaways are often higher in fat and kilojoules than home-cooked meals. When you buy fresh ingredients and cook them at home you know exactly what it is you’re eating and can avoid heart-harming sodium, saturated fats and sugars. Good eating habits begin with what you choose from the supermarket shelf.

Fresh is always best. Choose fruit and vegetables, grains and cereals, dairy products, poultry, fish, meat, lentils and legumes, vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. These foods help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If you do buy packaged foodstuff, check the labelling to see whether a product contains high levels of salt, sugar, unhealthy fats or additives and preservatives.

Never say die(t). Rather than latch on to the latest fad diet – like two days of water in which two leeks have been boiled, followed by eating half-portions of what you’d normally eat for months – adopt sensible eating habits to maintain or lose weight and stay that way. Drastic weight-loss measures usually mean that the faster it comes off the more likely it is to come back. Instead, make sensible changes that you will realistically stick with. A great, simple change is to drink more water. Not only does this take the edge off hunger, it is an excellent way to flush toxins from your system and keep you hydrated. Cut out a teaspoon of sugar in your tea or coffee. Once you become accustomed to the taste, cut out the next teaspoon when you are ready.

Change your thought patterns. Low self-esteem and negative thoughts can be an obstacle to achieving health and wellbeing. Are you caught in a downward spiral of feeling bad about how you look or feel and then overeating to relieve stress? Thinking positive thoughts about yourself is crucial to wellness and weight loss.

If you have the type of metabolism that needs more than three meals a day, make sure that you always have healthy, low-kilojoule nibbles on hand. Eat a handful of unsalted nuts or low-fat hummus and celery or carrot sticks. Choose low-fat yoghurt and fresh fruit.

It’s all about maintaining a healthy balance. Doing anything extreme is usually bad for you, so introduce dietary changes slowly but surely and you’ll find that they become an integral part of a long-term healthy lifestyle.

A far cry from the hippy trend of the 90s, organic foods and lifestyle products now line the shelves of major retailers with impressive arrays of newly branded packages and organic has become an ongoing hot topic in nutritional and environmental circles. Is it just more marketing hype, or are there real benefits in adopting an organic approach to living?

THE SAYING, “you are what you eat” shows the direct connection between the goodness of food and your health. Questionable agricultural methods that place the value of quantity over quality means that, in recent years, this has extended not only to your choice of food, but to the entire production journey from seed to soil to plate.

Health Coach Deborah Banda believes, “The increased availability of organic food is certainly a trend… but it is a good trend!” Despite the marketing hype and industry regulations, Banda feels that it comes down to common sense. Banda asserts that “organic food simply tastes better. It is higher in nutrients and is grown in ways much closer to how humans have been growing food for millennia”.

What many people don’t realise is that there has been a marked decline of the nutritional values present in food. This is directly linked to herbicides, pesticides and GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) that sap the food’s original goodness. According to a study in the Journal of Applied Nutrition, organic pears, apples, potatoes and wheat have an average of 90% more mineral content than chemically treated or genetically modified counterparts.

Afrisco, South Africa’s leading organic certification body, outlines that organic food must be produced in an environment where soil fertility is protected from the detrimental effects of agricultural fertilisers and where the surrounding environment is well maintained and unharmed too. also promote environmental sustainability, suggesting that “organic is all about producing goods that work in harmony with, and not against, nature” as well as providing information to guide the public on making healthier choices.

“The food we eat should be the real thing, full of life energy, and unencumbered by human interventions,” says Banda. Unfortunately, because of the burden on organic farmers for higher profits and stringent certification regulations, organic food is more expensive. As Banda suggests, this is just one reason we should be going back to their permaculture gardening and small-scale food cultivation in our own gardens. What healthier way of obtaining food than to grow it with your own toil and love, eating it fresh and in season?
