GENERAL NOTEBOOK

Familiar Face: Colorado Mesa is coached by former Yellow Jacket head coach Russ Martin. Martin was at the helm of the Green and Gold from 1996-1999 where he amassed a 12-27 re-cord.

Where is Home?: Black Hills State has already played three of four games on the road and plays on the road again this week-end. The road warriors do end with four of their final six games in Lyle Hare Stadium.

Fair Play: A common trait amongst John Reiners’ squads have been very few penalties. That continues this year as the Green and Gold lead the RMAC with fewest penalty yards per game at just 34 and rank 10th in the nation in that category. Black Hills State also leads the RMAC in fewest pentalietes and fewest penalty yards.

Large Crowd: The 130th Battle for the Homestake Trophy was the largest crowd to witness the game when 5,000 spectators showed up to O’Harra Stadium. That now gives the Yellow Jack-ets an average attendance of 5,514 over two games this year.

Attendance Figures: Idaho State is one of the highest-attend-ed games for the Yellow Jackets during the NCAA-era including transition years. Here is a listing of the seven-highest attended games over the last four years. A large crowd of 5,000-plus is expected for the South Dakota Mines game on Sept. 12.

1. At Montana State – 9/6/14 – 19,187 2. At North Dakota – 9/24/11 – 8,545 3. At Angelo State – 9/5/13 – 7,643 4. At CSU-Pueblo – 10/20/12 – 7,341 5. At CSU-pueblo – 11/1/14 – 6,817 6. At Idaho State – 9/8/12 – 6,228 7. At Idaho State - 9/5/15 - 6,028

Finding the Fountain of Youth: The Yellow Jacket two-deep features 21 redshirt fresh-man or true freshman. That is on top of last year’s young group that now has 14 sopho-mores listed in the two-deep. With 35 under-classmen represented, that leaves 17 juniors and seniors within the two-deep.

BHSU on ESPN: The Sept. 12 game at South Dakota Mines was chosen as the NCAA Game of the Week and was broadcast nationally on ESPN3. It was the 130th meeting between the two schools.

Captains: Senior Andrew Blaylock, juniors Damon Goldhammer and Cody Okray along with sophomore Phydell Paris were selected as team captains for the 2015 season. The four were voted captains by their peers dur-ing fall camp.

Playing Up a Level: Black Hills State opened the season against an FCS opponent for the second-straight season and third time in four years. The Yellow Jackets opened at Montana

State last season and at Idaho State in 2012. The Yellow Jackets also played North Dakota in the middle of the 2011 season.

OFFENSIVE NOTEBOOK

• After the Yellow Jackets had just one 100-yard rusher in three years of NCAA football, Phydell Paris already has two such games this year. His first was 186 yards at South Dakota Mines and followed wtih 132 yards in the home opener against Colo-rado Mines.

• Phydell Paris ranks seventh in the RMAC with 97.8 rushing yards per game. Through four games, that would be a career-best for the redshirt-sophomore.

• Phydell Paris set an NCAA Division II era rushing record for the Yellow Jackets when he ran for 186 yards at South Dakota Mines. That also marked his first career 100-yard rushing game of his career. The only other previous 100-yard performance was from Ward Anderson last season against Colorado Mesa with 143 yards.

• True freshman Ryan Hommel came into fall camp vying for the starter position and worked his way up the depth chart and was named the Week 1 starter on August 27. He was the only true freshman to start in week 1 for the RMAC.

DEFENSIVE NOTEBOOK

• Black Hills State ranks second in the RMAC by only allowing three fourth-down conversion. Colroado Mesa leads the league by not allowing two conversions. Black Hills State has seven stops on 10 attempts.

• Cody Okray ransk eighth in the RMAC with 38 tackles on the season. Okray has 20 solo tackles and 18 assisted while averag-ing 9.5 tackles per game.

Around the RMAC

• Mitch Glasmann (QB/Western NM) threw for four touchdown passes to give him 100 in his career to break the RMAC TD record. He tossed for 501 yards, which is a new career-high and he is just 597 yards short of breaking the RMAC passing record. It was also over 300 yards over the average that the ThunderWolves allow on average per game through the air (194.3). He accounted for almost all of the Mustang offensive yards, as WNMU had 516 as a team. He was responsible for all four touchdowns against No. 10 CSU-Pueblo throwing for an 86-yard strike for his first of the day to start the scoring. He also added a 45, 13 and 18 yard touchdown passes.

• Morgan Fox (DE/CSU-Pueblo) continued to rack up sacks Satur-day, as he totaled three in the 42-27 home victory against Western New Mexico. The three sacks resulted in the loss of 31 yards for the Mustangs. Fox totaled six tackles (four solo), three tackles for loss and added four quarterback hurries. Fox helped the Pack allow just 15 yards rushing and six points in the second half. The senior end has 10 sacks this season to lead NCAA Division II, while his 13.0 tackles for loss is also the nation’s best.

• Juquelle Thompson (WR/Fort Lewis) returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown to give Fort Lewis a 28-7 lead at New Mexico Highlands, playing a big role in the Skyhawks’ blowout win over the Cowboys. He finished the game with three punt returns for 75 yards and two kick-off returns for 45 yards. He totalled 154 all-pur-pose yards, adding 34 receiving yards to his day.

John ReinersHead Coach • Fourth SeasonCareer record: 10-28

Head coach John Reiners enters his fourth season at the helm of the Black Hills State football team. Reiners was named the 28th head coach in school history after spending three years as the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator (2009-2011).

The 2014 season saw the Yellow Jackets have three members named RMAC All-Conference including second team selection Luke Whalen. Ward Anderson and Trent Boner each garnered honorable mention nods. During the season, the Green and Gold posted 4,766 yards of total offense, a school record. Against rival South Dakota Mines, the Yellow Jackets posted five passing touchdowns from Ward Anderson, ranking third-all time along with Anthony Eborieme receiving 194 yards, also third all-time.

The 2013 season saw the Yellow Jackets go 3-8 (3-6 RMAC) after closing the season with wins at Fort Lewis and at home against Western State. The final game of the season, against Western State, was a shootout with the Yellow Jackets put-ting up a season-high 50 points with 476 yards of total offense.

The offensive line was impressive, allowing the second-fewest sacks in the league at just 17 and the lowest amount of yards lost per sack. The Yellow Jackets also committed the least amount of penalties in the RMAC.

In his first season as the Jackets’ head coach, Reiners led the team to a 4-7 (3-6 RMAC) record at season’s end after closing out the season with a three-game win streak where Reiners’ squad averaged 31.3 points per game and gave up a mere 10.3 points per game defensively on the way to outscoring their opponents 94-31 in that stretch. The momentum from a strong end to his debut season carried over to the recruiting trail as Reiners brought in a freshman class of over 35 players from seven different states including California and Florida. Under Reiners’ watch, the Jackets were the least penalized team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2012 and his BHSU team raised their GPA by one-half percent.

In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Yellow Jackets led the Dakota Athletic Conference in rushing and in the last two years of the DAC, he coached eight first-team All-Conference selections and nine second-team All-Conference selections.

While serving as an assistant coach at Chadron State for 14 years, Reiners was the head track and field coach for 11 seasons. Under his guidance, the Eagles set 60 new school records and earned All-American honors 34 times. His track & field teams had the highest GPA among all NCAA Division II teams (3.35 men) in 2007, according to the U.S Track and Field Coaches Association.

At CSC, he was very active on the academic side of things as he spent the first three years as an Academic Coordinator with the Academic Gameplan Program (AGP), a program that promoted and guided student-athletes to successful academic work.

Standouts that Reiners coached at CSC include current San Diego Charger and Harlon Hill Award winner in the 2006-07 season, Danny Woodhead, from 2004-07. He also coached tight-end Jess Clarke in 1999.

Reiners is a graduate of Republican Valley High School at Indianola, Neb., where he was a football standout and won the Class C 800 meter run at the Nebraska State High School Track & Field Meet as a senior with a time of 1:56.69. Reiners earned one letter in track at Chadron State as a freshman before focusing on football full-time. He went on to letter four years in football for the Eagles as wide receiver. Reiners earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from CSC in 1995 and 1997, respectively.

John is married to the former Jennifer Vasey, a native of Laramie, Wyoming, who is one of Chadron State’s all-time great volleyball players and was inducted to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2010. Together they have one son Dylan and three daughters Ashtyn, Addi, and Kali.

The Reiners File

• 28th head coach in Black Hills history

• Assistant football coach at Chadron State from 94-08

• Head Track and Field Coach at CSC for 11 years
